It was opening mght for the East Side Drama Club and their presentation of three-one act plays. Asencio was born on July 15. 1931. in Nipr. Almeria. Spam. He graduated from East Side High School in January. 1949 Upon graduation he ranked seventh in a class of one hundred and four. While at East Side, Diego served two terms as President of the Spanish Club, received the Physics Award, participated in various plays, and was a member of the Drama Club and National Honor Society. In 1952. Mr. Asencio graduated from Georgetown University and served in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957. In 1957 he pined the Foreign Service From 1977 to 1980. he served as U.S. Ambassador to Columbia. Ambassador Asencio was taken hostage in Columbia, in February 1980. He was held in captivity for sixty-one days. For his strength and courage he received many awards. Among them were the Georgetown University Constantine McGuire gold medal, the President's Award of the American Society for Public Administration, and the Department of State's Award for Valor. Ambassador Asencio is married with five children. Currently he is the Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs. Ambassador Diego C. Asencio. we salute you!
