IS IN RECOGNITION We the senior class of 1981 extend our congratulations to Joseph C. Parlavecchio, our alumni of superior merit. Mr. Parlavecchio graduated East Side High School in June 1961. He went on to higher education and earned his B.A. and M.A. degrees at Jersey City State College. Mr. Parlavecchio continued his educational pursuits at Newark State College and Seton Hall University. His accomplishments and highlights in education indicate an academic achievement of outstanding merit. A variety of educational positions and responsibilities which saw him assume the role of teacher, director of recreation, Title I Project Coordinator, vice-principal and finally as principal of Dayton Street School all pointed out Mr. Parlevacchio's capabilities and versatility. Mr. Parlavecchio’s energies and expertise expanded into the fields of civic and community activities. A vital force in the East Ward civic, political, and communtity affairs, Mr. Parlavecchio played an important role as a member of the Essex County Board of Chosen Freeholders and as President of the East Ward Young Democrats. We are most proud and privileged at the selection of Mr. Joseph C. Parlavecchio as our alumni of superior merit. ADMINISTRATION FACULTY Teachers are an important part ol school life. Our lives are intertwined. So much of what we do, what we are, and what we know depends on them. We are not the only ones who are happy when our team wins, or when we have a day off. And we are not the only ones who cry at graduation, or are upset when report cards are distributed. The faculty experiences all this with us. Not only are they dedicated in their teaching but give freely of their time for our benefit. When we fondly recall the days and years spent at East Side High, it will be impossible to forget the many fine members of this faculty that have provided inspiration and incentive to strive for excellence. RDMINISTRRTION FACULTY Mr. M garo, at hia daak aarly in tha morning OUR WORKING PRINCIPAL When we fondly recall the days and year spent at East Side High, it will be impossible to forget Mr. Megaro. our principal. Faced with a tremendous construction problem of two new additions to our school, confronted with the reconstruction of our old building, and compounded with the fact that he was newly assigned as principal to East Side High during the hectic years of 1979-1980. he has through dedication, inspiration, and concern for all of us and those to follow, accomplished feats that exemplified his talents as administrator. Hia accomplishments were not those that made headlines, but instead were the types of achievements that made our environment of learning, our day to day activities, and our awareness of what is important in our educational experiences, meaningful and fruitful. We would like to list just some of these accomplishments by Mr. Megaro, not to highlight his career, but more to accentuate those day by day administrative problems that we, in most instances, were not aware of. and yet had a great impact on our educational environment. Supplementary supplies, equipment and instructional material were purchased to enhance learning situations in many departments. New classroom, cafeteria, and health office furniture was purchased to replace old. obsolete, and broken furniture. Mr. Megaro, enriched, expanded, and improved the curriculum to meet the needs of all of us at East Side. We cite only a few of the many accomplishments Mr. Megaro has spearheaded in the past two years. We wish him continued success and are confident that those who follow in our footsteps will continue to benefit from such dynamic leadership. 20 Below: Addressing the student body, at a special assembly progrem. OUR ADMINISTRATION: A TEAM EFFORT Our years at East Side High School have achieved meaning and fruitfulness due to the fortitude, willingness, imagination and abiding values by our school administration who have shown genuine interest in our welfare. Mrs. Maria Cardiellos, Vice-Principal, gives freely of her time to an integral part of our school life. She brings understanding, a pleasant disposition, and an awareness of the importance our family heritage plays in our lives. Mr. Joseph Chagnon, Vice-Principal, is always busy helping to make our school a pleasant and pleasing environment. His cheerful manner, patience and tolerance with the many day to day problems that crop up, and hit persistent efforts to help our school are consistent with his dedication and willingness to do the best for all of us. Mr. James Martin, Vice-Principal, is a good friend as well as a dedicated advisor. His tolerance for our mistakes, his understanding of our opinions, and his guidance with wisdom has helped many of us. Mr. Angelo Sena, Vice-Principal, will always be remembered for his genuine interest in our welfare. Mr. Sena's expertise extends into the many and varied functions at East Side that contribute to the enrichment of our lives. His encouraging manner, quiet humor, and availability for that extra help or assistance in a special problem are other examples of how he has contributed to making East Side High School not only educational but enjoyable as well. The guidance and understanding we receive during our years in school comes from the people who surround us. The progress and changes made over the years were made by innovative and practical people in positions of leadership. Through their personal and professional generosity our situations have been widely improved. vf Mr. Angelo Sena, Vice Principal Mr. Donato Del Guercio, Physical Education Mr. Michael Afflitto, Business Ms. Elizabeth Domigan, English Mr. Paul Cutrino, Science Mr. George Kessler. It is here where many of us meet to discuss and work at assignments handed out by our teachers that require the use of supplementary material and research into sources of knowledge that are unique only to the library. Here we meet as a group or work as individuals under the guidance of our teachers and librarians to develop our skills in library usage as well as a lifetime understanding of library resources. Many of ua use the library for research, to find answers to specific questions, to browse through the books or magazines or just to appreciate literature through suggested ideas in reading. The environment is attractive, well organized, and presents an atmosphere of a quiet orderly appearance which is conducive to learning. The saying, meet you in the library is truly representative of the fundamental function of the library as a source of knowledge for all students. Si MRS. PILAR CAAMANO MRS. ROSE CIFELLI MRS. UNITED WE SING: Chorus And Choir J It could be a ahow tune off Broadway, a popular tune of the day, or a traditional Christmas carol; it’s the chorus rehearsing for their next performance. Director, Mrs. Molly Glover provides a variety of vocal experiences to her youthful chorus members that requires dedication, practice, and rehearsals almost everyday. This group may meet as early as 7:00 A M. or as late as 9:00 P.M. depending on the performance in progress. Mrs. Glover not only insists on proper singing techniques but stresses improvement of individual singing capabilities. Knowing the tremendous potential of her chorus, Mrs. Glover channels this energy into producing performances that include hits from South Pacific, Bye Bye Birdie, and this year. Pippin. Stage fright is normal when a member of Choir J finds out that a performance has actually arrived but one would never Know it as these young people become involved in their singing. Developed in their poise and confident in their talent, these young singers perform like professionals. Practice, Practice, Practice that's the key to their success as in their “Happy Holiday” presentation on December 18. 1980 which highlighted old time favorites as Sleigh Ride, O Holy Night, Jingle Bell Rock and The Hallelujah Chorus. LET’S GO TO PRESS Yearbook The problem it that when you consider the fact that there are so many activities going on in school, a multitude of photographs to take, so many names to record, and a variety of interests involved, powh, bam, smash, we run into conflicts. No doubt about it, from the start our staff ran into conflicts, differences of opinions and discussions over what would be our theme. How do we display senior activities? What would be the basic layout of our yearbook? With deadlines to be met and work to be done, our staff turned to Mrs. Pellegrino, Yearbook advisor for advice, expertise, and consensus of opinions. Amazingly enough, the work did get done, deadlines were met, and work continued with diligence and concerted effort. Mrs. Pellegrino acknowledged that the task was not easy. “My job, she said, “was to make the staff aware that a yearbook should be a history of the total environment at East Side High School. “Our aim, she continued, “is to create an innovative yearbook based on the Columbia Scholastic Press Association guidelines which are an established criteria for yearbooks nationwide. It is our goal to prepare and present a yearbook that all seniors will enjoy and appreciate. A yearbook that will photographically portray life and activities at East Side High School in 1981. TENNIS TEAM SHOWS PROMISE East Side supported a very respectable 8-6 record, although 1980 was considered to be a rebuilding year. Manny Pimental and Marcos Franco, both sophomores, played exceptional singles tennis. Marcos ended with a 6-2 record and cornered a very tough second singles victory with undefeated Vailsburg. Manny enjoyed a fine season, and finished with an exceptional 6-1 record. The key to the 1981 campaign, however, lies in the improvement of our doubles players. Roger Soares and Luis Santos were our first team doubles. They ended with a 3-5 record, but came on strong to win their last 3 matches. Also, credit must be given to Tony Loureiro and Victor Car-diellos. Tony's strong net play and Victor's baseline strategies helped to produce a respectable 5-3 record in third team doubles competition. If this area progresses as expected, EAST SIDE could be looking towards a City Championship. Captain Rudy Blozen injured during the December 12, 1980, game was out of action for 7 games but he still managed to finish 3rd in league scoring. The team played some games with only 7 available men, while opposing teams skated a healthy 20 men. Our determined team hung in for every game but fatigue would take over by the last period. Undaunted, our own Alan Ger-litz led the league in scoring with 40 points with a super 22 goals and 18 assists. We forsee a good hockey season next year barring any injuries to the players. The team's effort was sparked by some fine bowling by 8 senior members of the team. BASEBALL TEAM ADVANCES TO STATE FINALS For the first time in East Side history our baseball team advanced to the Group 3 State Finals. In order to reach this position the team had to defeat four top teams, Pequannock, Clark, Summit and Westwood. Unfortunately, they were defeated in the final game by Lakewood. Outstanding records were produced by pitcher-outfielder Felix Suarez and pitcher-first baseman Sam Mar-tucci. Suarez had a 5-0 pitching record with a shut out of Paterson East Side and a super win over Barringer. Felix struck out 47 batters in 40 innings, batted .333 and was selected to the 3rd team All County and All State. Martucci was equally outstanding by defeating Irvington 4-3, Elizabeth 7-3, and a 10 inning tie versus Essex Catholic. Sam's fielding at first base and hitting helped in many games. Holding down the infield with great defensive plays were shortstop Osvaldo Rebozo, Julio Lock at second base and Richard Miller third baseman who swings a mean bat. Pitcher Jose Sanchez put out plenty of fires as a relief pitcher and covering home plate was Jose “Pepe Fernandez with some great throws to catch advancing baserunners. A great season guys! GIRLS SOFTBALL TEAM PLACE 2ND IN CITY LEAGUE Our East Side High Girls Softball Team completed its 1980 season with a record of 8 wins and 10 losses. These young athletes compiled an 8 and 4 record in the City League giving them a second place finish. Only a 15 to 14 loss to Vailsburg and a 10 to 9 loss to West Side prevented them from taking the title. Although the team started out poorly, changes in line up and positions soon produced positive results. With Marchele Scott, at 2nd base, Sonia Arce, left field, and Andrea Capuano, catcher batting over 500 the team was sparked to delivering key hits at the right time. Any pitcher wilHeW you that a team is made up of 9 players and having Leola Harrington in right field, Teresa Gonzalez in center field with steady Maria Sheldon, at 3rd base and Cecilia Mota at shortstop helped to give confidence to the team. A flawless performance by Heddy Bartell at 1st base and an awesome hitting record by designated hitter Sheila Houie made pitchers Mary Coogan and Carol Dixon feel a little more comfortable. Overall, it was a successful season. But at East Side High we soon found out that the definition did not quite fit. Here we found an institution of learning, but learning about life and not merely plain facts. We had the opportunity to form close relationships with our fellow students and with teachers that presented life experiences more fully and in a manner that made us more aware of our self-worth. During these past four years we have developed our own characters, and individuality which we now take out into the world. So now, as seniors, we are open to explore the new world that surrounds us. We accept the ohallenge. MR. CHILL SENIOR CLASS ADVISOR The Senior Class of June 1981, wishes to extend its sincerest thanks to Mr. Leonard Chill, senior class advisor whose friendly smile, enthusiasm, and wisdom made this year a happy and fruitful one. His genuine interest in our welfare and his consistent efforts on our behalf have endeared him to all of us. We extend our respect, and our lasting thanks to a fine person who will long be remembered for his guidance and friendship. Mr. Chill busy •(plaining problem. PROJECTS ON OUR MINDS During our school years we have had the opportunity to share and grow together as well as develop independently. This type of environment has always been challenging and stimulating to us because we not only relied upon our abilities but have also been able to draw upon the talents of others who shared similar problems. This relationship has made us more aware of sharing cooperatively but also made us responsible students who responded to independent thinking. Soares Anibal Soto Elizabeth Soto John Sotolongo 159 LUNCH TIME The Cafeteria ia one of the busiest and most active places in school. With three lunch periods, all of us have the opportunity to partake of what is on the menu. The food is good, well prepared and nutritional but as some mothers would say, my child is all stomach. Many of us hit the neighborhood stores and street vendors for that extra snack. This is our most favorite time. A moment of relaxation, a moment to fill our stomachs, a time to meet with friends. Our teams, our individual athletes, our activities all depend upon active support from all of the student body. Cheera from the sidelines, supporting comments from the spectators all lend encouragement to participants. If you are not in the act then it is nice to know you are supporting the activity. Our participation as spectators can do much to encourage our fellow students to excel. Come out and support your team. Troy Jackson waiting for a friend. Zarrillo COMMUNITY Our year 1981 haa been anything but consistent and even-tempered. The one overshadowing event was The Hostages being held in Iran. 1981 made us aware of earthquakes, fires, floods and famine. It brought these and more; a new president, the anguish of refugees, the violent death of John Lennon, the energy crisis, inflation and a feeling of joy and happiness with the return of The Hostages. A Yellow Ribbon Inauguration HANGING OUT Will any of us ever forget our favorite hang outs? How could we not recall, happily, those hours of idling the time away, talking to our friends, and sharing our plans for the future. Will we ever forget how we cut a few classes to sit on the bench in the park on a nice day. We will always remember Teixeira's Bakery for coffee and buttered rolls, Pat's Piz-zaria for an Italian hot dog and Ali's for some ice cream. We count ourselves fortunate to have enjoyed these experiences and will remember, fondly, our neighborhood hang outs. is? Th remains of SI. Jama Catholic Church. THE IRONBOUND: A NEIGHBORHOOD THAT WORKS 4s we reflect the future that lies before us there are moments when all of us get a little emotional and sentimental about this area where many of us were born. Most people call this area the Iron-bound section of Newark. We like to think of ourselves, proudly, as Down Neckers . While walking through our narrow, clean streets with its neat, compactly built homes, we ponder over the many thousands of immigrants from Germany, Ireland, Italy and now more recently Portugal who have settled here and helped maintain our neighborhood with all its charm. The Ironbound has changed little, although a twinge of regret hits us when we recall the knocking down of our old St. James Catholic Church. Change is inevitable but we wish to remember, fondly, those many familiar sites that we grew up with and made our neighborhood attractive and distinct. A glimpse ol busy down-nsck. A GOURMET’S DELIGHT: INTERNATIONAL NIGHT There is one event that we all look forward to during our school year. This event is International Night. When the date for International Night is announced, everyone begins to visualize exotic foods from all over the world prepared and presented for all to enjoy. On this night parents, teachers, and students all participate in preparing a favorite dish from their cultural ancestry for all to taste and compare. One of the outstanding national dishes is prepared by our Polish parents and students. This area is quickly surrounded by all who enjoy the taste of Polish culinary delights. Favorite among this group is the Swieconka tradition. We thought you would enjoy an explanation of what is signified and how it was celebrated. Easter is one of the happiest days in Poland. After observing the 40 day penitential season of Lent, everyone is more than ready for a feast. A buffet is laid out. The table is set with the best linen. There is no set menu. The buffet may be as large or as small as one wishes. Usually, there is at least baked ham, kiel-basa or sausage, bread, butter, farmer cheese, babka, salt and the traditional Easter relish of beets and horse radish. The decorated, colored, hard-boiled eggs, the symbol of life, are cut and shared with all visitors in an exchange of good wishes. In the center of the table is the Paschal lamb, the symbol of the Son of God. made of sugar, butter or babka or cake dough. The lamb often holds a Polish flag as a standard of victory over death. It is called the Swie-cone or Swieconka because the priest visits the home and blesses the food. To this day in Polish communities on the Saturday before Easter, the priest either visits the home to bless the food or the food is packed in baskets and brought to the church to be blessed. Lacking the support of these people, it is safe to say that our task would have been more difficult. We thank them for all their help, consideration, and patience. We are especially indebted to Mr. Anthony Me-garo for his very strong support; Mr. Angelo Sena for his encouragement; Ms. Bette Domigan whose proofreading assistance was most valuable; Mr. Leonard Chill for his co-operation; Mr. Raymond Kirschbaum for his artistic talents; and Mr. Lou Esposito for his cogent advise with layout and design. We extend special thanks to those faculty members who were most helpful in providing information and documentation for student activities. Our gratitude would not be complete without mention of Ms. Shirley Vetter, Mr. Gregory Cos-tich and Mr. Rudy Lopes from the Lorstan-Thomas Studios for their valuable assistance and interest.
