11111111111 East Side High School has a man with the strength and demeanor to assume the responsibilities of mentor and manager. The con flicts he faces from day to day. serve to strengthen his character. that character which gives him the sensitivity to care; a caring which he extends among his peers and to those who need it most, his student body. Stemming from his love of youth, he has. in a short time, been able to relate to his students as individuals. Those students whom he has helped through his guidance and commitment, seem to find a sense of value in his actions. His ability to listen and communicate to those who turn to him. makes his job that much easier. However. his leadership requires him to have an objective viewpoint, making him less quick to judge. Yet. he must withstand the criticisms of others. But being a man of understanding and compassion. the student body has come to admire him and respect his authority. These traits belong to the man whom the Class of 77 honors with the dedication of this book, our principal and friend. MR. Johnson to the Rosier of Superior Merit. Ms. Johnson is now magistrate in the City of Newark. She graduated East Side High School in June of 1961, attended Douglass College, where she earned her A.B. in June of 1965. She then went on to Rutgers School of Law, where she obtained her J. D. in June of 1971. She is currently a member of various major professional state and national legal associations such as. New Jersey Bar Association; Executive Board of the National Bar Association; and the Garden State Bar Association. She is also actively engaged in civic endeavors, Ms. Johnson participates in organizations which dedicate themselves to the betterment of human understanding. She was a member of the Board of Directors for the Central Ward Girls Club; a member of the New Jersey Advisory Board for the United States Commission on Civil Rights; and a member of the NAACP. Roland Gonzalez, won the Individual High School Foil Title in the Christmas Tournament. Another stellar fencer. Miguel Llanes. a junior was District Champion.
