Warm up. Run two and a half miles. Co, go, go. The loneliness of the long distance runner. To finish, first or forty-first, it takes guts. 124 Led by Joe Spirra, AH County, .374 hitter, Jim Spa-davccchia and Mike Luteran, last year’s baseball nine made a strong challenge for the city title. Ramon Iglcsias belts a high one. BASEBALL Larry Fogler takes late throw. GOLF Fore . . . and East Side swung into another City League Coif Championship. Led by the coaching of Sid Rothbard, and the playing of Dan Ardito, Bob Murphy, and Jim Ferris, the clubmen dosed out a fine season by making an impressive showing in the Essex County meet. TENNIS Once again the East Side net-men smashed their way to a City Championship under the guidance of Coach Charles Fisher. Led by Rob Oliveira and George Rodriguez, the netmen compiled an unblemished record in the City League. 129 Around the middle of March the halls usually resound with the sound of pounding feet and a hollow warning: “Track! Last year’s outfit lacked the depth of a winner, but despite this, still posted a 9-1 record falling short at the City meet to a talent-laden Wecquahic squad. East Side salvaged two first place medals with Walt Lester climaxing his career with a 2-mile win and Rudy Langlais leaping to a victors’ in the broad jump. ,1 130 132 SOCCER It was a long season, but we did it! This year's soccer team retained the city title after a hard fought season with a record of 7 wins, 4 losses, 5 ties. After losing seven starters from last year, the l oot-ers came hack with the leadership of All-County captains Mike Barca and George Estcvcs to capture East Side’s tenth straight city title. With the developing of 6-8 Tony Littles into a fine all-around player. East Side’s Cagcrs experienced their best season ever. Surrounding Tony were Ron Could who this year, time and time again, lit the fire that produced East Side victories, Jeff Green, a freshman starter doing an outstanding job on the offense, Bruce Beaman, who produced the quick inside points, and Tom Fanner, who balanced the team with his excellent ballhandling. Congratulations to Coach Rothbard on a highly successful season. FENCING WRESTLING Jimmy Ferris parries thmst. STEVE VOLKSEN 136 137 SWIMMING Carlos Gonzalez at take-off. The season’s high points were an 8-0 defeat of a highly rated Barringer team and a last second tie with St. Benedict’s on Ron Gould's passes to Fred Moon and Smith. There’s no common denominator. I fust take people for what they are, try to treat them with a little decency as human beings. I go home to Newark and I go out to the playgrounds, fust to talk.” — Alvin Attics, former Wee-quahic player and current player-coach of the San Francisco Warriors Coach Notte instructs Al Smith, All State End.
