INTRODUCTION-TOUCH 1966 Torch Office - 1966 To Those Who Chance Upon This Book: What is a yearlxnik? It is an autograph album (a very expensive one); it is a collection of a million pictures of a million jK-ople doing a million things; it is a limited first-run edition of a book, custom l ound and wrapped in years of honored traditions. Its production is hampered by all of these pedantries, seeped m personal emotions ami treasured by its owners throughout their lives and the lives of their heirs. One seldom, if ever, finds a family Bible or a school annual among the many volumes in a second-hand Ixxik store: therefore, this edition requires some explanation on my part. Although my association with yearbooks has not been too extensive, having only produced three of them. I nevertheless have arrived at some definite conclusions about what a yearlx ok should attempt to Ik . Moreover, I have l ccn fortunate to have come across a group of students. The (’hiss of June 1960. who concur with me in these opinions. This then is a very unique yearlxx k. It is unique in its conception and execution. We. the yearbook staff and I. have attempted to present one year in the life of East Side High School coupled with moments to remem-lx r of a student’s life for four years of senior high. Our theme. Moments To Remember”, has provided a vehicle to carry this out. You will find going through this book several shattered traditions. There are no divisions, no activity sections, and all the items that rightfully belong in a ycarlxx k have been placed alphabetically in the book, regardless of their position, their prestige, or their social rank. Every entry falls where its title alphabetically places it. We have tried to give this placement an opportunity to carry the theme to its logical conclusion. A yearimok begins its life soon after it is given to each senior. As the years pass, what a treasure chest of memories it breeds for them to share with their children and friends. The candid pictures, typical moments of a student’s life, were selected to provoke these memories of things enjoyed, things despised, and things revered. It is our lasting hope that we have succeeded in accomplishing this to some small extent. I encourage you. the reader and viewer, to approach the reading of this lxx k with this foremost in your mind. I hope that the shattering of traditions is justified bv the firm belief that this edition of the Torch will Ik remembered for having successfully achieved what the Torchbearers and I have set out to do.
