Hint truth lies somewhere, if we know but where. —Cowper DEDICATION ive hundred years ago, men began to turn their eyes to new worlds. They were imbued with a spirit of Renaissance and wonder. Their search for truth and knowledge led them into strange new paths. There was a new awakening concerning the world around them. New advances were made in the fields of science, mathematics, physics, art, culture and government. There was a new desire on the part of individuals to improve their position as human beings in a changing world. Today we are again experiencing a movement by men to search out truth and to discover new worlds. A tremendous world of knowledge waits for us in the yet unexplored reaches of outer space. We are today on the threshold of many new and remarkable discoveries and experiences. We must dedicate ourselves to the continuing search for truth, knowledge, and the improvement of man’s earthly condition, and to the exploration of other worlds. We must constantly strive for peace, in order to be able to complete the many tasks which lie ahead of us. It is to this struggle that we dedicate ourselves and this book. 5 This is our special duty, that if anyone specially needs our help. we should give him such help to the utmost of our power. ” —Cicero ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY . An open door, a genial greeting, patience, understanding and sympathy, combined with fairness and a desire to give all students an equal opportunity for four worthwhile years at East Side, sum up our administration. MR. LOUIS GRIFFITHS Vice Principal A warm welcome to parents. A special tribute and dedication this year go to Mr. Griffiths, who will retire from East Side with the class of ’63. His familiar figure, his kindly, smiling face will be missed by everyone. His years of dedicated service to this school and its students will Ixj rememl ered as long as there are East Side graduates who have shared their memorable years with him. We are proud and grateful to have had the opportunity to be at East Side during the years he was its vice principal. It has made our four years here that much more rewarding. We wish him for now, and for the future, good luck, good health and a very warm and fond adieu. A smiling face. MRS. MARIAN MATARAZZO Class Advisor TAn Advisor’s Life Is Not An Easy One” Mrs. Matarazzo, has, perhaps more than anyone else, added a special quality to the many activities we seniors have enjoyed at East Side. Throughout her two years with the class of ’63 she has been an inspired and dedicated advisor. She has brought out the best we have to give; she has given the best of her talents, time, and enthusiasm to us. By tireless work, she has seen this class through two overwhelmingly successful years. Her fine character and high standards have been an inspiration to all seniors, and her consistent efforts in our behalf have endeared her to all. The entire senior class wishes to express its sincere appreciation and affection to her for all she has done, and to let her know that many of the fond memories we take away from East Side, and a great deal of the good we have achieved here, can be attributed to her guidance and inspiration. “ o gift is more precious than good advice. —Erasmus Supervising voting. What is East Side? Not just a structure of stone, steel, wood and glass, but people—a school is no better than the people who fill it. Let us show you East Side, its administrators and faculty, whose single aim is the greatest good for the greatest number, through constantly improved educational methods, whose devotion to their task is often unrecognized until years after we have left their classes and graduated into the struggle of life, where their lessons suddenly take on new importance. They are truly the servants of the people, since without their unceasing, sometimes unappreciated, efforts to impart knowledge and skill to each oncoming generation, our lives and the welfare and progress of our nation would lx? limited and backward indeed. The build-ing-our school of course; the life-well, we arc the life. The doors swing open, welcoming crowds of students, burdened with books and the thoughts of the day ahead. A steady stream brings them up the well-trodden path, through the door, and into the silent corridors. So the day begins. How swiftly those sleeping corridors are transformed into pandemonium! The hum of voices and the ring of laughter are predominant. Hurrying footsteps lead to many places. A most popular gathering spot is tltc Student Activities Room. Large groups, at times almost crowd-size, invade it every period of the day or before school to work for Student Council, Torch, or Announcer. More than once a week the footsteps lead to the Teachers’ Cafeteria where class meetings arc conducted. A more quiet environment can be found in the library, but it too bursts with activity. A bell rings, and all at once the halls are again calm and serene. This is the Isomcroom bell, and now the actual school day has begun. 23 itn-q-q-q-g U E S D AY Oh! there goes another string. One more note to go. Sit down before the bell rings! Hello therer The homeroom period affords an opportunity to catch up on last night's l omcwork or the latest gossip. Its prime purpose is to provide time for opening exercises and the reading of announcements for the day. There goes another bell, and off they go to period one. This procedure occurs eight tiroes every day. As the students make their way to their first class, they sometimes stop for a brief chat or brush a hand or shoulder in a “Good-morning” fashion. However, they don't stop for too long; for before they know it, that bell nnp again, meaning detention for the few stragglers who didn't quite make it on time. 25 26 The first class of a college preparatory student could very well be math, science, or a laboratory. In the laboratory one can observe many facial expressions. A happy, contented smile covers the face of the student who has just completed an experiment successfully. Inevitably there arc a few masks of disappointment to be found on tho faces of students whose experiments have perhaps jus exploded, leaving them with an artificially, possibly vari-colored epidermis. Better luck next time! Perhaps, the secretarial student might find his first A in a secretarial practice room. Confronting all those machines and electrically operated mechanisms, one might be lcary of entering. There need be no fear, for the students are given expert training in machine operations and leam to manipulate them with case and precision. Their training is invaluable, for more than likely they will be using their experience, upon graduation, in the occupations of their choice. Oh, oh-another jammed machine! Let’s get out of here, quick! 27 Following a business student, may lead straight to a bookkeeping class. Assets, liabilities, debits, credits, income, expenses—Will they ever make sense? Of course they will! The tcadkrrs are here to see that they do make sense. Busy little hands are writing figures and preparing statements that will, they hope, balance. Oh, a sigh of relief, and a thankful face tell us that all lias balanced; and a future bookkeeper or accountant is born. The shop classes, provided especially for the boys, may be the first step of an industrial or technical student. For them, the roar of shouting voices has ceased, only to be followed by the hum of a motor or the whir of a saw. Yes. here is started on his way the man who will work with his hands, the builder of the future. The periods fly by. One. two, three and finally, four the beginning of the lunch periods. Racing masses gush into the cafeteria from all sides. The rumbling of chairs, the slamming of books, the noisy shouts. Oh, the serenity and calm of the cafeteria are unsurpassed. Lines begin to form as hungry students wait their turn to buy their lunches. A sudden crash, and nimble fingers reach to pick up the remains of a lunch that was almost eaten. Oh, well, the diner wasn't really hungry anyway. After lunch has been eaten and tension is relieved, the various due cussions range from the test had last period to “What are you wearing tomorrow? or Did ou see that football game yesterday?” Here and there buried in a hook is a studious head, trying to study for the test it's going to haw ntarr period.' Oh not That bell rings too fxsi! A deep breath, and they’re off to afternoon classes. 29 Everyone takes such sub jects as English and history, the perennial basics. With Shakespeare and Chaucer swimming in their minds, it is very likely that they will nest encounter World Wan I and II and the problems of the farmer in their history text. What did you say Shakespeare grow on his farm? Now, now. let's not confuse the two. Down to the gym in streams! Sneakers, socks, gymsuit. Every thing on? All right, out on the floor everybody. All physical effort goes into this period, whether it be a game or exercise. You can't say that East Side breeds w eaklings. Another bell, and all right, everyone, hustle. Only-throe minutes to get dressed, you know. The next bdl may be the very List one you will hear that day. By the old clock on the wall, the hands read 2:30, and at last comes that welcoming bell; for it's been a hard day. Once again as before, the students stream into the halls, slamming locker doors, and putting on coatst Their departure is faster than their arrival. Before long the halls arc empty, and silence again reigns over the structure that was so full of life through the day. The swinging door shuts—and the school settles into slumber. The day ends. The Hon. Mayor Hutch J. Addonizio visits East Side. THE MAYOR COMES TO EAST SIDE Afr. Ackerman extends the thanks of the student body for the Mayor's inspiring talk. We were greatly honored this year when Mayor Hugh J. Addonizio visited our school. He spoke to us on the importance of completing our education and helping to make our city an even better place in which to live and work. He reminisced about his early years in Newark and his activities as an athlete, then mentioned his aspirations for Newark again. Mr. Ackerman appointed him an honorary member of the faculty; our only re-gTet is that wc will not have the opportunity to sit in on one of his classes should he ever come back to teach at East Side. This visit was an exciting event for all of us, doubly so for those students who were able to meet and speak to him personally. 33 Assembly programs iuk! occasional after scltool contests add to the pleasure of life at East Side. The singing groups enchant us each Christmas season; the orchestra or band add enjoyment to every assembly. One particular program demonstrated the many different ethnic groups which make up the East Side school population. For United Nations Day we had a group discussion involving students now at East Side, who represent more than ten different countries. A highlight of the year was an essay contest open to all grades, sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars, on the theme, What Freedom Means to Mo . This year many seniors participated. One, Susan Schmitt, took second place. 35 PA R E NTS’ NIGHT May I pretent my mother. This icat todays assignment. A serious moment. Signing up for membership of P.T.S.A. A happy interview. Who said you can’t go back in time? November 5, East Side’s parents went back to school. They followed the actual schedule of their children; up and down stairs, meeting teachers, sitting in classes, and finding out all about the experiences their boys and girls go through everyday. Many parents were huffing and puffing by the end of the evening and by the last few periods those stairs seemed a little hard to climb, but all agreed the evening was extremely worth while. Open House gave the parents. and the community as a whole, the opportunity not only to view the school and find out what East Side students arc learning, but to meet the teachers and administrators on an informal basis. It is hoped that this successful event, and others of a like nature planned for the future, will help perpetuate the cordial relationship which now exists between East Side and the parents and community. Some communities never achieve this feeling; others have had it, then lost it. It is precious. May its long tradition be preserved. Our advisor, Mrs. Bernice Poll, keeps us at work constantly, making sure wc sec the importance of a truly good yearbook full of informative items, but yet right to the point so as to be understood by everyone. Every morning you can see and hear the members of the Torch Staff at work in the Student Activity Room getting together all sorts of data which will in time form an interesting story. Almost any period of the day you can walk in and see some girls typing, others working on layout, and still others trying to decide how to create a fitting cover for our Torch. Mrs. Poll will be holding a meeting of the Editorial Staff during lunch periods, trying to stimulate ideas for the different articles as well as checking over those that have already been written. The most hectic days are those just before the book goes to press because it is necessary for us to set' that everything is just right, and with nothing left out. Then and only then will the printer receive the book. Next is the long wait for that all important Torch. This is the most important one ever written l cause it is ours. Finally comes the arrival of the precious ixwks that will allow us to recall the past in the future. MRS. B. These people, under the direction of Mrs. Virginia Lepore, complete the complicated tasks necessary tor the publication of a successful monthly newspaper. While the creators of the Announcer may lx? unknown to East Side students, their publication cannot help but be praised. The work of this group interests, amuses, and informs East Siders about the latest developments in the school and community which directly or indirectly affect them. The senior class will miss the informative publication after graduation, since it was something to look forward to with anticipation and to read with pleasure. Mr. Murray Hecht and The Announccrcttcs. Being a candidate for the National Honor Society is a distinction of considerable merit, for the organization brings together the l est students the school has to offer. In order to become eligible for membership, a student must demonstrate high academic ability plus leadership and a willingness to serve the school in any capacity open to him. We point with pride to the fact that this year we have fifty two candidates eligible for membership. Mr. Ackerman came into the room and spoke a few words congratulating all candidates on their fine campaigns. Now the moment had arrived. As each winner’s name was called, a grin of happiness broke on his face. Cries of joy sounded throughout the room. Winners ami lasers joined together, exchanging congratulations, knowing that the next year they would all work together on the Student Council for the welfare of the school. The winners! Congratulations, with enthusiasm. 45 CLUBS KEY CLUB Advisor: Mr. Anthony D‘Andrea With burdensome schedules, homework, and after school jobs, you’d think our students would have little time to devote to extra-curricular activities. However, we find that club meetings are well attended, activities are flourishing, and this year we have more clubs than ever. Some have been organized as service clubs, whose sole purpose is to render assistance throughout the school. These include the Key Club, Servettcs, Visual Aids, Library Staff, Junior Red Cross, and Business Club. They have all proved themselves essential to the functioning of the school. Sports play a very important role in the life of the student during his four years at East Side and, in many instances, influence his character and attitudes in later life. Each sport gives the players an opportunity for physical fitness, excitement, and the pleasure of participating in a competitive activity best suited to his particular abilities. The students, as well as the players, develop school spirit and a sense of togetherness from cheering and being cheered whether the outcome is a win or a loss. All sports have something to contribute. The way we judge any single sport and the characteristics that make a good team are applicable to all. There are many students at East Side involved in different sport activities. The football team alone involves 70 boys, the soccer team 36 and the basketball team 30. When you add to this impressive number the students involved in swimming, track, baseball and volley ball along with the band, the twirlers, cheerleaders, Pep Club members, and the hundreds of other students who support games by their presence, we find that almost all East Sidcrs are involved in sports. Sports call on each student to give as well as take; in doing this, he gains doubly. The players learn the lesson of team work, responsibility and cooperation. The students and players learn to appreciate school spirit, to accept victory or defeat with good sportsmanship, and to develop a pride in their school and the fine athletes it produces. 55 FRANK BARROQUEIRO JOSE NIANSO JOHN MATOS ANTONIO OLIVER1A Coach Roui and the team at practice. Youth is such a lovely thing. ' SENIOR CLASS ELECTIONS October 15, 1962 was an exciting day for our senior class, for on that day were announced die officers who were to guide the class throughout the year. It had all started about two and a half weeks before election time. Petitions were handed out to prospective office seekers. All four junior class officers decided to rerun. After three days of signing petitions, the candidates were announced by Mrs. Matarazzo, class advisor, These candidates were selected according to the number of signatures of endorsement they had acquired. For the office of president would run Frank Barroqueiro, Frank Lopez, and Joe Piccini. Vice presidential hopefuls were Lorraine Delli Santi, Diane Rocmcr, and Joseph Krill. The secretarial post was to be a l ttle l etwecn Mickey Vazzano and Llaine Fass. Running for the position of treasurer were Carmine Vitolo, Lorraine D'Angelo, and Robert Mauterer. For two long weeks the poster warfare waged on. For two weeks East Side's halls looked like an art gallery out of a comic strip. Everywhere could be seen President Kennedy saying, Vote for so and so,” or Dracula saying, “Vote for her, you poor ghoul, or I’ll visit you tonight.” Meanwhile, the junior class officers were busily preparing their last official task. They had to come up with two actual voting machines from City Hall at a time when they were being prepared for municipal use. But after a few phone calls and letters, the job was completed. About a week before the polls opened, the entire senior class was assembled in the school cafeteria. The cafeteria had been set up with microphones because each candidate was scheduled to give a campaign speech. As each office seeker was introduced, and stepped up to the mike amid cheers, he discussed the policy he hoped to carry out during the coming year. The seniors listened enthusiastically to each speech, trying to make up their minds as to who would make the l est officer. Bv this method seniors were able to know all their candidates better. October rolled around, and so did the stomachs of the brave office seekers. Many of the candidates voted early, before school, and then spent a busy day chasing their friends to the polls. Members of the class needed no persuasion, however, as about 90 percent voted. Polls were open before school, during the lunch periods, and after school. After classes, the anxious candidates and their friends gathered around the polls and their advisor. Mrs. Matarazzo, as the tally was taken. The results showed that all four incumbent officers had been re-elected for another term. They were Frank Barroqueiro, president; Lorraine Delli Santi. vice-president. Mickey Vazzano, secretary; and Carmine Vitolo, treasurer. As the runners-up congratulated the winners, everyone looked forward to a veer of hard work, but who cared? Everyone knew that intermingled with the hard work would be the fun that presides a pleasant contrast to routine. We're next. SENIOR ACTIVITIES The fact that we were soon to become seniors, and all that Senior year entailed struck us the night of graduation in June, 1962. As the graduating class passed us the Torch and we watched and sensed the excitement of the students who were leaving, we realized with a little sense of panic that our turn to leave was not far off. As if to compensate for the short time we had left, we filled senior year with happy events that could be shared by the entire class. Almost every month a different activity was planned, from dances to ice skating parties, to Chinese dinners. We had fun in widely different ways: choosing the tree for the Christmas dance; competing in the V.F.W. Essay Contest We worked selecting our senior play and making floats for the Nfardi Cras Dance. Wc worked hard selling B.O.T.’s for the Torch. Then the day Indore Christmas vacation we all had breakfast together and awarded a prize to the student who had raised the most money. One exciting event followed another. Tlie Spring months were filled by a “Mad Hatter’s party, with everyone wearing crazy hats, tlie senior play, and finally, our Senior prom. This memory-filled year was one all seniors will find hard to rival in the future. Seniorj. Receiving the torch. Cookies anyone? Christmas breakfast. Biggest B.O.T. What a party! Selecting the Christmas tree. ''Solitary skater. What a breakfast. Don't be afraid, Frank. Asbury Park or bust! Battle of the chopsticks. Hold U, I’ve not an itch. Mmm-mmm. In the year nineteen hundred sixty three in the month of June, an era will have come to an end. Not the end of the stone age, nor the end of the age of exploration, but an era in the lives of the East Side Class of 1963. In the eyes of the world the passing of this era will be of little consequence—but for the Class of '63 this era has been one of the most important of their lives, of more personal importance than the end of the stone age and the age of exploration. This brief era, the Era of the Class of ‘63, has lasted a mere four years. But these years arc mere” only in chronological numl ers, for when the experiences of the four years are tallied, they total an immense complexity of memories. The Era of the Class of '63 has had a vast store of memories. Happy memories, sad memories, humorous memories, serious memories—they all form a picture of life as it existed in the Era of the Class of Class of '63. What was life like in the Era of the Class of '63? Memories, memories, memories . . . remember the first day the Class of '63 entered East Side in September 1959? The first time you entered your homeroom and began to meet new friends? Wandering in awe through the maze of now familiar hallways? Your first homework assignment? ... Do you remember your first report card? Or your locker partner? Can you ever forget your gym classes? Or the East Side football games? Do you remember your first dance? Faying your class dues? Reading the Announcer? Looking up to seniors? The Junior Prom? Becoming a senior? The clubs you joined? Doing homework? Being late for class? Chemistry lab? Typing? Health? That assignment you forgot? The senior dances? ... Memories, memories, memories —how can you forget? Yes. the Era of the Class of '63 has ended, and yet it will never end. It was a happy era, vet you will remember it with sadness, for while events of the Era or the Class of '63 have passed and can never be relived, they will live forever in the hearts of the Class of '63; but there will be sadness over these memories, for it is with sorrow that you leave life in this era ... forever. 119 REMEMBER the Junior Prom? The gym, utterly unrecognizable in its Parisian attire, was the setting. The time?—romantic May, 1962. Close your eyes and see yourself once more walking into a sidewalk cafe, being seated by a polite Parisian miss. Gay faces peered out from under a red and blue awning, and laughter rang out. A dimly lit room, glowing candles, French can-can dancers, and enchanting music were elements of an exciting evening. 122 REMEMBER Christmas—and Chanson de Noel, our Christmas Ball? The general excitement made the evening a success even before it began. Above the dancing heads, standing majestically in the center of the floor, stood an exquisite spruce, the branches, laden with bright decorations, created a traditional atmosphere of “peace on earth, good will toward men. ’ The highlight of the evening was the crowning of a Snow Queen. Her sleigh, drawn not by eight reindeer, but by two charming attendants, was preceded by everyone’s friend, Santa Claus. Happiness was plain to see in all faces as Christmas carols were sung around the tree. Early in the year tryouts l egan, with a record number ol enthusiastic seniors vying for parts. Until the final choice was made, prospective actors and actresses, clutching playbooks, could be seen in the halls of East Side. Then audition day came, and in the breathless quiet of the auditorium the cast was announced. Now the real work started. Everyone was busy memorizing lines and learning to interpret the characters. Rehearsals were times of laughter, quiet, forgetting lines and entrances, practice, and more practice. Finally, dress-rehearsal came, with the whole But, Mom, I don't want to art married! graveyard. We arc gathered together Setting the scene uith Mr. Hoilinvin. the Director. cast assembled, nervous, praying that tomorrow would never come. The evening of May 10 arrived too soon, much too soon. The auditorium was dark; the empty seats loomed ominously. As we looked out into the emptiness, we realized that in just a little while all our hard work would be put to a test. The stage lights went on, someone yelled, Places everyone! and Act I began . . . Act II . . . Act III. In what seemed only an instant the cast was assembled on the stage for curtain call. Now as we lookt-d out over the audience, we had a feeling of pride that the show had been a success. Yet a sadness overwhelmed us, for this play marked the beginning of the end of a memorable four years. Curtain caU. Your halls, now silent.
