THE JUNE 1962 EASTSIDE HIGH SCHOOL NEWARK, NEW JERSEY TORCH — Table of Contents Dedication ........................... 4 Administration ....................... 6 Faculty .............................. 1 1 Seniors .............................. 18 Memories ............................. 65 Activities .......................... 84 1 Ads ................................113 Grant us brotherhood, not only for this day but for all our years—a brotherhood not of words but of acts and deeds. We are all of us children of earth—grant us that simple knowledge. If our brothers are oppressed, then we are oppressed. If they hunger we hunger. If their freedom is taken away our freedom is not secure. Stephen Vincent Bcnet DEDICATION Our years at East Side High have been not only educational but enjoyable as well. A great part of our education has been learning to live and work together, regardless of religion, race or color. This close bond of brotherhood has enabled us to venture into the world, the very best of American citizens. It is because of this shared good will that we have made many of our accomplishments in studies, sports activities and the act of maturing. We have learned to treat our neighbors as we ourselves wish to be treated. Brotherhood is a seed which must be planted, nurtured, and fed in order to survive. As we leave East Side, we shall be able to carry this seed, which has grown and blossomed in our hearts, and plant it in the hearts of those whom we shall meet. Much is written about brotherhood; there are songs about it, movies on it, and one week out of each year is set aside for it. But we, the seniors of East Side, have it in our hearts fifty-two weeks of the year and in tribute to this, we solemnly dedicate our 1962 Torch. ADMINISTRATION Our four years a East Side have been happy and fruitful, owing to many influences, one of the most important being our school administration. Mr. Ackerman and Mr. Griffiths will often be remembered by us for their genuine interest in our welfare. A. WALTER ACKERMAN Principal TO THE CLASS OF JUNE 1962: I am, of course, delighted to have this opportunity to convey my congratulations and good wishes to all the members of this fine class. I believe that you are justified in looking backward with pride upon four years of solid accomplishment. You have selected an impressive and appropriate theme for your year-book. This is a tribute to your impeccable taste. It is gratifying, indeed, to note how well all East Siders exemplify this truly American spirit of brotherhood and understanding. This spirit hos always been present in this school, and in this remarkable Iron-bound community. Mr. A kermon tongratulolcj freedom rider offer add-on to Eo ! Side itudenli. To these two men, who hove made East Side the kind of school we have been proud to attend, we extend our respect, our friendship and our lasting thanks. LEWIS GRIFFITHS Vice Principal TO THE GRADUATING CLASS: Each individual, with his own pattern of in-terests and abilities, must work out his own ap. proach to life's problems. The faculty and I, at East Side, hope we have helped equip you for life's journey—with fortitude and willingness to learn, with imagination and good sense, and with all other abiding values, so essential to gain and hold the confidence and good will of all peoples with whom you come in daily contact. My best wishes for your continued success. Mr. Griffith! odvitti iludvnt on scholarship r otd. ADAM M. STANISLAWCZYK Class Advisor A part of Ea$f Side goes with each member of this graduating class. The future of every one of you will be influenced by the knowledge, the guidance, and the instruction which you received here- Your efforts and cooperation aided you in achieving your goal of getting a high school education. May your experiences and friendships at East Side bring you pleasant memories in the years ahead. I wish you happiness and Godspeed. CLASS ADVISOR Our warmest appreciation goes to Mr. Stanislawczyk, our class advisor. Throughout our memorable junior ond senior years he has been both a dedicated advisor and, best of all, a good friend. The wisdom he has displayed, his sincere friendship and kind manner are only a few of many attributes which endear him to us. His patience with our mistakes, his tolerance with our differences of opinion and his selflessness in giving his time for our benefit are more of the many reasons we have to offer him our heartfelt gratitude and everlasting thanks. 8 Our Own Smiling Mr. Sion. Mr Slonitlowciyk consult with Executive Council o 8:00 A M. COUNSELORS WILLIAM SCOTT Head Counselor BERNICE POLL Year Book Counselor We wish to thank our counselors, who not only have guided us through our problems, both real and imagi nary, during these past four years, but who also have helped set us on the path leading to a happy, successful and satisfying future in which we shall become contributing citizens of our society. BOGATKO Phyucat (duration Eiploining th Teachers a East Side are an integral part of school life. Not only are they dedicated in their teaching but give freely of their time to the many extra-curricular activities. A glance at the list of the many and varied clubs functioning at East Side, is a clue to the great contribution they make to the enrichment of our lives. We depend on our teachers for all the little things that moke going to school fun: the singing groups, the bands, extra-curriculor sports, school government, the dances, shows and assembly programs, and lastly our senior activities. Without the voluntary assistance provided by our teachers, by coming in early and staying late, chaperoning our dances and taking us on trips, planning our activities and working along with us, wc would miss all the extras that make school something special and memorable. For all these many things we are duly grateful. We are thankful, most of all, for that little extra help when the work gets difficult, the encouragement when things go wrong, and the little push in the right direction when we stort to stray. Many elections have been held before, but this time a reol voting machine was used! In the process of choosing senior class officers, a lesson in voting procedure was learned, and an introduction to the democratic process of electing leaders by the will of the majority was experienced. For those students who were candidates and the class as a whole, the campaign was an exciting reality. There was the fun of making posters, getting petitions signed, campaigning for the different candidates, finally voting, then waiting tensely for the results. On October 6, at three p.m., when the results were made known, those who won and those who lost could all be satisfied with a job well done. East Side Goes to the Polls rfc to it doth. REFLECTIONS Remember a worm September day in 1958 when we. a large group of starry-eyed boys and girls, streamed through the unfamiliar portals of East Side High School? Here in this mysterious and frightening place we would spend the better part of our teenage lives. As we looked at our surroundings, we were overcome by a feeling of awe and fear, fear of what fate hod in store for us, and awe of all we had yet to learn. Many questions rushed through our minds: Would we be popular, would we pass our subjects, and most important of all, would we be accepted by the other students? What a confusing year that was! Recall the first week, trying so hard to find our classes without looking conspicuous. All the trouble we had finding the gym! We got there, but more than a little late. Certainly nothing could have been more thrilling than the excitement of our first football rally in the assembly, with the loud booming of the drums and all the bright colors. We sat with staring eyes, gaping mouths and twisting necks, not knowing what to look at first; as the football players came quickly onto the stage, the cheerleaders led us enthusiastically in cheers, and the twirlers strutted down the aisle. For the first time, we felt caught up in the spirit of East Side, and a part of that elusive something known as tradition. During our sophomoro year we began to lose our shyness and gradually we started to become a part of clubs and other activities. We tried out for teams, volunteered for committees, and dreamed of the day when we would be the heroes of the games and the leaders of the clubs. We studied and struggled, wo made friends, and got to know our teachers a little better. On Saturdays wo cheered the football team, and once we even peeked in at a dance, but we didn't stay too long. Work, ploy, friends, and family—a pattern of our lives was beginning to emerge. Junior year was upon us before we realized it. Our pride showed itself in our eyes as we displayed our school rings, the symbol of upper classmen. The junior class election was a thrilling experience. Everyone had an opportunity to vote for the candidate of his choice for class officers. No one will forget our first dance, held on Friday the 13th, fittingly called Mystical Night. Our next dance was just as much fun. As we danced the Irish jig on St. Patrick's Day, we had the Irish as well as the East Side spirit in our souls. We could relax now. East Side had become a place we knew very well. We had many friends and acquaintances, and we looked forward to each day and all it would bring. The biggest event of our junior year was the Junior Prom, Aloha. It wasn't hard to imagine ourselves on a lovely South Sea island. The romantic music, the palm trees decorating the gym, the girls dressed in bright colors, added to the gay atmosphere. Soon, too soon, the fun of junior year was over, but we were overcome with joy when we realized that we were SENIORS. We had made it! Yet wo were sad-denod by the thought that only one year remained, the year of decision. We would have to decide whether to choose college or employment, where to apply, what job to accept, for what future to plan. Our year began with a real election for senior class officers, voting machine and all. We certainly received a lesson in election procedures. It seemed the term had just started, yet if was alreody Christmas. We had parties in homeroom and then our dance, complete with Santo Claus and a tremendous tree. Everyone was very gay. We worked hard this senior year. We had to. Some of us were accelerating and faking extra courses. We seniors were the ones who were now responsible for leading the clubs, running the school government, playing on the varsity teams, editing the publications, acting in tho senior play. Whot hod happened to the years when we just dreamed about all of this? We went to the variety show, the senior play, the Mardi Gras dance and finally the night the girls had planned for so long finally arrived. Senior Prom night. Will you ever forget the excitement os we danced till dawn under the dim lights? Everyone looked so different, so grown up. Senior year had been flying by faster than we ever imagined it could. There was so much to do and so little time. It suddenly made us realize how far wo had come in four years. We saw our friends smiling and dancing and wondored where they would be next year at this time. We looked at our partners and wondered if this dance would be a beginning or an end. At the farewell get-together, there was hardly a dry eyed senior among us. We realized that this would be the lost time we would meet as a class. Graduation was approaching, and for the second time in four years that feoling of fear was plaguing us. East Side had protected us, it had been our home away from home, and now we were leaving her to walk alone in the unknown world. Again that old feeling of fear and confusion engulfed us. This time, as before, the fear quickly left us. Graduation, and as we stood on the stage receiving our diplomas, we looked out into the proud, smiling faces of our parents, friends, and teachers. It was then we realized that we hod nothing to fear or dread. We were no longer starry-eyed adolescents, but mature individuals, ready to face whatever was in storo for us. We know we were prepared to take our places in the world. 73 Aloha , the theme of our Junior Prom, will be remembered for a long time. How could anyone forget the palm trees, hula dancer, and the impersonations of Keely Smith and Louis Prima? The music put us right in the Hawaiian mood. As we danced with our partners, we couldn't have asked for a happier night. 74 SPRING DANCE They said it couldn't be done! Well, the Mardi Gras did come to East Side. Bouncing balloons, gay music, whirling skirts, and Ihc sparkle of a real coronation of the King and Queen added up to a most unusual and exciting night. NOTICE 77 As we reminisce about our first senior dance, we can still picture the gay decorations, the bright Christmas tree, Santa Claus with his surprises, the mistletoe, and all the goodies. We were filled with the spirit of Christmas as never before. It was over before we realized, but our memories of all the fun we had hod planning for it, decorating the gym, and dancing the night away will always remain a pleasant memory. These ore some of the many exclamations you would have heard had you been backstage the night of the senior play. The audience began filling the auditorium, and the excitement could be felt in the air. Then the signal was given for curtain time and the ploy to begin. It was a relief for the cast to get started, for their tensions had built up the post three months as they rehearsed daily, and now the end was in sight. The sinking feeling in tho pit of their stomachs, the smell of- grease point, the fluttering pulses, the fear of forgetting lines, all disappeared with the signal, On stage . Like magic, their doubts vanished. With a collective sigh the cast took its place; the curtain went up, and the play was on. Then soon, too soon, it was all over; the fun, the fear, the glamour, the bows and tho applause. The curtain closed, the stage darkened, and sadly they realized one of the happiest events of their senior year was over. Toko Thotl Curtain Coll. These things we'll remember most — Our first year at school, everything wos new, strange and a little frightening but we quickly got into the swing of things. We attended the second Annual Spook Hop. Two wooks later wo were awed by the presence of Dore Schary, famed playwright and producer, who spoke to the senior assembly on Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Wo were amazed to learn that we were among the one thousand, nine hundred and fifty-three students enrolled at East Side High. The Student Council published a handbook to help us get to know our school better. Seven new clubs were started for our enjoyment, among them the Pep Club, to cheer on our athletes. Those lucky Seniors! Their prom was held at the Essex House. Four weeks later the ninetieth commencement took place at East Side. Inspired by Dore Schary's talk, the History Club decided to go to Hyde Park, home of Franklin Delano Roosevelt. The Drama Club presented the play, The Mask. We had some sad news though. We lost the football title to Barringer, and the soccer team placed second. The privilege of gold passes , which allowed their holders to leave classes whenever they wanted, was given to the hard working students who achieved the superior honor roll. Carol Ann Murphy won honorable mention for her poem Time on W.B.G.O. The ycor ended with Student Council Elections, the Senior Prom at the Military Park Hotel and the ninety-first commencement. In September, 1959, after the long, wonderful vacation, we returned to school. We were all very proud when Tom Darchy met Mayor Carlin on W.B.G.O.'s series, City Desk , which discussed city government. Through the efforts of the Student Council, the Student Lounge was opened. In it, students danced to a jukebox and could play ping-pong. We did ill The football team won the city title and Mr. Manhoff was named the coach of the year. He praised Mr. Murano, his assistant, for doing a great job. The Senior Prom, Stairway to the Stars , and graduation said farewell to 102 of East Side's best. The Announcer got a new look, four larger pages to give us more reading enjoyment. The Spring Festival, South Pacific , wos an unforgettable experience to all who saw it. The Student Council initiated, to an enthusiastic response, Dress Up Day, set for every Wednesday. Betty Sierzega won a four-day, all-expense trip to the Pocono Mountains for being Junior Achievement champion of Essex and Hudson counties. The track team got a girl manager, but the baseball team did bettor. They won the city title. About 200 students went to the Shakospearean festival in Stratford, Connecticut. We were very proud when our own Jerry Murano, President of the Student Council, won the Newark Citizenship Award. The yoar ended with the graduation of 270 students. Alas, anothor year was gone. As one year passed, another year started. September 1960 — and we were juniors at last! The first thing we remember is Mr. Stan's pleading for dues. He and Mrs. Matarazzo were made permanent advisors for the graduating classes. Mr. Rossi, our new soccer coach, guided our team to the city title. The East Side football and baseball teams also won city title. This meant a triple crown for East Side. The football team placed four on the All-City first string team. They were: Fred Williamson, Bill Levant, Bob Hoarle, and Tom Carrubba. As election time drew near, the Announcer took a poll on whom the students would choose for United States President if they could vote. Their preference seemed to coincide with that of the rest of the U.S.A. Mr. Bloch became the new advisor of the History Club after Mr. Posner stepped down. The club's annual trip this year was to Gettysburg. Forty-five students spent the day touring historic sites and having a wonderful timo. The first Junior Prom, held in the gym, turned Eost Side into a South Sea Island. The prom was under the direction of Mr. Stan, with Mr. Di Nordo providing the Hawaiian Music. Despite all the good times, there were some sad events we shall remember. Senior Rec Day was ended before our class had a chance to participate. The Senior Cafoteria was converted into a Torch , Announcer , and Student Council Office. No more privacy for the seniors. Another graduation ended another year. Hurrah, the class of '62! We're seniors at last! The first thing we did was to choose senior officers. They were Danny Wanca, president; Elizabeth Canta-lupo, vice president; Evelyn Devecka, secretary; and Camille Tresente, treasurer. Before we left school in June we had chosen Clem Maccia, Marjorie Metzker, Maxine Boatwright, and Joseph Fiordaliso as officers of the Student Council. So management of school activities was in good hands. We held our first dance, Tho Mistletoe Hop. It was a great success for the Senior Class. We picked our Torch staff, headed by Ann Rios, with Mrs. Poll as advisor. After mid term, things really got hectic. Auditioning started for the Senior Play. The Student Council did some great things this last year. They put new furniture in the Student Lounge. They also held a drive for the Retarded Children's Fund and collected $500. In our last half year at school so many exciting things happened that it's hard to recall them all. There was the Valentine Contest where the students of East Side picked the school sweetheart. The finalists were Kathy Egan, Francos Ferraro, Marie Policostro, Judi Milano and finally, Miss Valentine—Judy D'Amorin. The Spring Musical, produced by the Student Council, was a great success. It starred—Geraldine Domingo, Cathy Catena, and Sonia Gomez. The Senior Play, Curtain Going Up , kept all the seniors quite busy. Nick Tonzola, Tony Cuzzolino, Steve Holowenzak, Grace Zaneski, Eleanor Dobrinski, Evelyn Janowski, Clem Maccia, Manuel Pataca, Maxine Boatwright, John Hajian and many other seniors did a wonderful job, and the play was a tremendous success. It dealt with the problems a teacher had in putting on a class play. This was very fitting for Mr. Hailperin, our director. The great night finally arrived. Our Senior Prom — it was held at the Essex House. All the Seniors enjoyed a wonderful evening of dining and dancing, one that they will never forget. After the prom one event followed another. We had the awards assembly, the Farewell Dance, Senior Banquet, Senior Picnic and finally the long walk down the aisle to Pomp and Circumstance. All these wo will never forget — Eost Side, the teachers, tho fun and the tears, the laughter and the cheers, studying and report cards. They have become part of us, just as East Side will always be. 83 SANDY TORCH ANNE EVEIYN CAROL Anne Rio Editor-in-Chiof Assistants Sandra Clisham Evelyn Devecka Geraldine Villani Myra Fleitcll Carol Lodera Elizabeth Cantolupo Editorial GERRY Editorial Editorial Copy Business Manager BETTY STAFFS COPY STAFF Dolor lorutto, Chrittin Boniecki. The student body looks to the Student Council to set the pace and standards for the school. Among the many activities of the Student Council are the printing of a Student Handbook , maintenance of the student lounge and school bulletin boards, running the Miss Valentine Contest, putting on an annual show, and holding numerous school dances. Added to this impressive list of accomplishments, must be noted the booklet Tips to Teens , a handbook on school orientation given to all new students. This year the Council also inaugurated a Dress Up day, with weekly prizes and recognition for the winners. Much of the money raised by the Student Council goes into a scholarship fund, awarded upon graduation to the student who has done most for the school government.
