IN GRATITUDE In the midst of our community stands a building indistinguishable structurally from many others. However, it has a vital quality which lifts it far above the ordinary. It possesses that vibrant spark we call spirit; the impetus for which lies not in the building itself, but has come from the many people who have passed through, leaving behind a little of themselves. During the past fifty years, administrations, faculties, and students have been dedicated to creating here at East Side a living example of those democratic ideals we hold so dear. For here we truly have the proverbial melting pot, the American dream: where representatives of many races, nationalities and creeds are working together to create the basis for a sound future; where young men and women from every social stratum are learning to respect each other; and most importantly, where all are receiving an education suited to their specific needs. East Side may well be proud, for it has been helping to create and preserve the very essence of American Democracy. So, we, the class of June, 1961, in recognition of fifty years of service to the community dedicate this yearbook to our Alma Mater on the occasion of her Golden Anniversary. 1' VAl
