Hail and Farewell JANUARY, 1910 At a meeting the Board of Education of Newark, New Jersey decided to spend $250,000 for a high school in the East End. Commissioner Benedict Preith voted in the negative, favoring a southern location. He argued that most parents in the East End wanted to send their children to work immediately after the completion of the eighth grade while in the South End parents were generally anxious that their children attend high school. However, Commissioner Brown clinched his arguments for the “Neck with attendance figures. He felt the need east of the railroad was greater because Iron bounders had to spend carfare to reach Newark High School, and the bus service for this route was very indirect. JANUARY. 1910 The specifications for the new high school were released by the Board of Education. A resolution was adopted calling on School Architect Guilbert and Engineer Knight to draw plans for building on property bounded by Van Buren, Nichols. Warwick, and Sanford Streets. The completed building. East Side Commercial and Manuel Training High School, will accomodate 600 pupils. It will be planned so that facilities can double if needed. MARCH, 1910 The high school construction bid was given to Fred Kil-gus for $257,893. Construction should be finished by December, 1910. APRIL. 1910 The new high school in the East End will be the first of its kind. Operating under a co-operative plan, its students will work in machine shops one week and then attend school the next. In this way, they will be given a chance for selfsustenance. Industry will be expected to co-operate in preparing students for employment and further schooling. Three times as many students as were expected are on roll, which shows that the people of Newark are keenly aware of the value of industrial training. MAY, 1910 The contractor has agreed to rush the East Side building for a $1,500 bonus. By oxpressing its willingness to pay this added fee, the Board of Education has enabled the school to be ready for occupancy by early next year. JUNE. 1910 Our new East Side Commercial and Manuel Training High School will offer a variety of courses. It seems that local senti-ment favors this. There will be three four-year courses: the Commercial, Technical and General, which train young people for industrial jobs, normal schools or technical colleges. Principal Kennedy considers his school the finest of its character in the stale. APRIL, 1911 Crisisl Recently the long awaited opening of East Side Commercial and Manuel Training High School took place and someone forgot to raise the flag on its pole at the entrance. Fortunately, a Kinney Street car passed by. The conductor and motor man, noticing the mishap, ran up to the pole, and raised an eighteen inch flag. APRIL. 1911 Many citizens may not be aware of the unusual conditions at Newark's infant high school in the East End. Because of an unfinished basement, where the all important machine shops are located and the lack of heating. Latin is being held in the home sanitation department, stenography in the laundry room, and English in the millinery room. MAY. 1911 let's take a look at the recently opened East Side Commercial and Manuel Training High School. It is quite an imposing structure. A three story brick building with a basement, it extends back an entire block from Van Buren Street. Its plain but attractive exterior is in the Georgian style of architecture. A fourth floor may be added eventually if needed; the strength of the walls would sustain such an addition. Although lunch facilities are unavailable, by the time of the school's reopening in September, this will be remedied. SEPTEMBER. 1913 If you should happen to be visiting our high school in the East End this month, you will find a new and friendly face there, that of Mr. Eli Pickwick, the principal succeeding Dr. Thomas Kennedy who will be going to South Side High School. Mr. Pickwick, former city supervisor of manuef training. has had great experience in this type of school, having taught in St. Paul, Minnesota manuel training schools from 1889 to 1897. SEPTEMBER. 1913 The opening of the new South Side High School will certainly affect the attendance of East Side Commercial and Manuel Training High School. Many students taking the general course at the formor school will probably transfer to the latter, which will be exclusively a literary and commercial training center. However East Side will then be able to resume its original purpose, that of an industrial preparatory school. JUNE. 1923 Examinations were given at East Side Commercial and Manuel Training High School in order that the English department might choose next year's staff members of the school magazine The Orient. APRIL. 1926 Recently the Board of Education made a move to establish East Side Commercial and Manuel Training High School exclusively at a technical school because of the great drop in attendance. A “literary school will be built in the Clinton Hill district where citizens have been clamoring for one. As for the East End. no one has offered an opinion as to the change. MAY. 1926 Progressives of the city have declared their wish for the continuance of East Side Commercial and Manuel Training High School as it was established Also, the love of competition has urged Ironbounders to oppose the change to a solely technical school. As of now, many East Siders are still attending other institutions for their general education, encountering problems with transportation. MAY, 1928 Isn't it amazing? When East Side Commercial and Manuel Training High School was founded in 1911, its chance of survival was doubtful to some people. Opening with 430 pupils, this number has been increased to 1400. It is wonderful to witness this desire for education growing in our young people. Congratulations. Ironboundersl SEPTEMBER 1933 The enormous enrollment at East Side Commercial and Manuel Training High School has made it necessary for the Board of Education to open a South Market Street Annex to the school, which has already been enlarged twice. This year, due to changing curricula, the name has been changed to East Side Commercial and Technical High School. More students are realizing the need for further education after secondary school, making Principal Stanton A Ralston extremely proud. MAY, 1942 The spirit of the war has infiltrated every part of our society. Principal William Wilmot has announced that many boys from our Ironbound high school have joined the overseas forces. In addition, this school has been leased to the Submarine Boat Corporation for summer use. The corporation will hold classes in the excellently equipped drafting rooms. JUNE. 1953 The new and beautifully modern wing of our high school was completed this month Containing a gymnasium, locker rooms, showers, and an auditorium designed to seat 1500 peo pie, it lends a different aura to Van Buren Street. Along with exterior changes, the school was officially designated as East Side High School. This signifies the realization of the great need and demand for preparation for higher education. The original purpose of the school, industrial training, no longer seems to be the exclusive goal of East Side High School. OCTOBER. 1956 The sorrow of every Ironbounder is caused by the death of Dr. Henry McCracken, principal of East Side High School since 1948. Although this is a qreat loss to the community, we are sure that his successor. Mr. Walter Ackerman, will be quickly adopted as the new father of East Side's students. SEPTEMBER, 1957 Newark high schools were once more bombarded with countless freshmen this month An enormous class of 500 entered East Side, sethng a school record. What lies ahead for them? What will they contribute to their school history? JUNE. 1961 Mr. Walter Ackerman, proud principal of East Side High School, witnessed the graduation of almost 400 seniors. This class of June, 1961 celebrates the golden anniversary of its school and brings to a close the first half-century of progress. The nostalgic memories and high ideals of East Side High School will remain with each student, as he moves forward through the complicated, adult world outside.
