IN GRATITUDE In the midst of our community stands a building indistinguishable structurally from many others. However, it has a vital quality which lifts it far above the ordinary. It possesses that vibrant spark we call spirit; the impetus for which lies not in the building itself, but has come from the many people who have passed through, leaving behind a little of themselves. During the past fifty years, administrations, faculties, and students have been dedicated to creating here at East Side a living example of those democratic ideals we hold so dear. For here we truly have the proverbial melting pot, the American dream: where representatives of many races, nationalities and creeds are working together to create the basis for a sound future; where young men and women from every social stratum are learning to respect each other; and most importantly, where all are receiving an education suited to their specific needs. East Side may well be proud, for it has been helping to create and preserve the very essence of American Democracy. So, we, the class of June, 1961, in recognition of fifty years of service to the community dedicate this yearbook to our Alma Mater on the occasion of her Golden Anniversary. 1' VAl comtm s DEDICATION .......................... 1 ADMINISTRATION ...................... 4 FACULTY .......................... . 6 SEN ORS ............................ 18 MEMORIES . 74 ACTIVITIES 84 SPORTS ............................100 ADVERTISEMENTS ....................120 7 THE TORCH presented by The Class of June, 1961 East Side High School NEWARK, NEW JERSEY A. Walter Ackerman PRINCIPAL It is a distinct pleasure to congratulate this fine class on its splendid record in all areas of school activity. We are now commemorating fifty years of educational service here in East Side High School, and it is my feeling that this class is representative of the best of the many thousands of fine and loyal students who have passed through these halls. Your future success and happiness is our fond desire. 4 Lewis G. These are the World's Rebuilders! —Theodosia Gorrison TECHNICAL PHYSICAL EDUCATION SCIENCE Class Officers MARY ANN URSO Vice-President DAVID DIAS President JOAN FASULLO Secretory WILLIAM LEVANT Treasurer 16 Hail and Farewell JANUARY, 1910 At a meeting the Board of Education of Newark, New Jersey decided to spend $250,000 for a high school in the East End. Commissioner Benedict Preith voted in the negative, favoring a southern location. He argued that most parents in the East End wanted to send their children to work immediately after the completion of the eighth grade while in the South End parents were generally anxious that their children attend high school. However, Commissioner Brown clinched his arguments for the “Neck with attendance figures. He felt the need east of the railroad was greater because Iron bounders had to spend carfare to reach Newark High School, and the bus service for this route was very indirect. JANUARY. 1910 The specifications for the new high school were released by the Board of Education. A resolution was adopted calling on School Architect Guilbert and Engineer Knight to draw plans for building on property bounded by Van Buren, Nichols. Warwick, and Sanford Streets. The completed building. East Side Commercial and Manuel Training High School, will accomodate 600 pupils. It will be planned so that facilities can double if needed. MARCH, 1910 The high school construction bid was given to Fred Kil-gus for $257,893. Construction should be finished by December, 1910. APRIL. 1910 The new high school in the East End will be the first of its kind. Operating under a co-operative plan, its students will work in machine shops one week and then attend school the next. In this way, they will be given a chance for selfsustenance. Industry will be expected to co-operate in preparing students for employment and further schooling. Three times as many students as were expected are on roll, which shows that the people of Newark are keenly aware of the value of industrial training. MAY, 1910 The contractor has agreed to rush the East Side building for a $1,500 bonus. By oxpressing its willingness to pay this added fee, the Board of Education has enabled the school to be ready for occupancy by early next year. JUNE. 1910 Our new East Side Commercial and Manuel Training High School will offer a variety of courses. It seems that local senti-ment favors this. There will be three four-year courses: the Commercial, Technical and General, which train young people for industrial jobs, normal schools or technical colleges. Principal Kennedy considers his school the finest of its character in the stale. APRIL, 1911 Crisisl Recently the long awaited opening of East Side Commercial and Manuel Training High School took place and someone forgot to raise the flag on its pole at the entrance. Fortunately, a Kinney Street car passed by. The conductor and motor man, noticing the mishap, ran up to the pole, and raised an eighteen inch flag. APRIL. 1911 Many citizens may not be aware of the unusual conditions at Newark's infant high school in the East End. Because of an unfinished basement, where the all important machine shops are located and the lack of heating. Latin is being held in the home sanitation department, stenography in the laundry room, and English in the millinery room. MAY. 1911 let's take a look at the recently opened East Side Commercial and Manuel Training High School. It is quite an imposing structure. A three story brick building with a basement, it extends back an entire block from Van Buren Street. Its plain but attractive exterior is in the Georgian style of architecture. A fourth floor may be added eventually if needed; the strength of the walls would sustain such an addition. Although lunch facilities are unavailable, by the time of the school's reopening in September, this will be remedied. SEPTEMBER. 1913 If you should happen to be visiting our high school in the East End this month, you will find a new and friendly face there, that of Mr. Eli Pickwick, the principal succeeding Dr. Thomas Kennedy who will be going to South Side High School. Mr. Pickwick, former city supervisor of manuef training. has had great experience in this type of school, having taught in St. Paul, Minnesota manuel training schools from 1889 to 1897. SEPTEMBER. 1913 The opening of the new South Side High School will certainly affect the attendance of East Side Commercial and Manuel Training High School. Many students taking the general course at the formor school will probably transfer to the latter, which will be exclusively a literary and commercial training center. However East Side will then be able to resume its original purpose, that of an industrial preparatory school. JUNE. 1923 Examinations were given at East Side Commercial and Manuel Training High School in order that the English department might choose next year's staff members of the school magazine The Orient. APRIL. 1926 Recently the Board of Education made a move to establish East Side Commercial and Manuel Training High School exclusively at a technical school because of the great drop in attendance. A “literary school will be built in the Clinton Hill district where citizens have been clamoring for one. As for the East End. no one has offered an opinion as to the change. MAY. 1926 Progressives of the city have declared their wish for the continuance of East Side Commercial and Manuel Training High School as it was established Also, the love of competition has urged Ironbounders to oppose the change to a solely technical school. As of now, many East Siders are still attending other institutions for their general education, encountering problems with transportation. MAY, 1928 Isn't it amazing? When East Side Commercial and Manuel Training High School was founded in 1911, its chance of survival was doubtful to some people. Opening with 430 pupils, this number has been increased to 1400. It is wonderful to witness this desire for education growing in our young people. Congratulations. Ironboundersl SEPTEMBER 1933 The enormous enrollment at East Side Commercial and Manuel Training High School has made it necessary for the Board of Education to open a South Market Street Annex to the school, which has already been enlarged twice. This year, due to changing curricula, the name has been changed to East Side Commercial and Technical High School. More students are realizing the need for further education after secondary school, making Principal Stanton A Ralston extremely proud. MAY, 1942 The spirit of the war has infiltrated every part of our society. Principal William Wilmot has announced that many boys from our Ironbound high school have joined the overseas forces. In addition, this school has been leased to the Submarine Boat Corporation for summer use. The corporation will hold classes in the excellently equipped drafting rooms. JUNE. 1953 The new and beautifully modern wing of our high school was completed this month Containing a gymnasium, locker rooms, showers, and an auditorium designed to seat 1500 peo pie, it lends a different aura to Van Buren Street. Along with exterior changes, the school was officially designated as East Side High School. This signifies the realization of the great need and demand for preparation for higher education. The original purpose of the school, industrial training, no longer seems to be the exclusive goal of East Side High School. OCTOBER. 1956 The sorrow of every Ironbounder is caused by the death of Dr. Henry McCracken, principal of East Side High School since 1948. Although this is a qreat loss to the community, we are sure that his successor. Mr. Walter Ackerman, will be quickly adopted as the new father of East Side's students. SEPTEMBER, 1957 Newark high schools were once more bombarded with countless freshmen this month An enormous class of 500 entered East Side, sethng a school record. What lies ahead for them? What will they contribute to their school history? JUNE. 1961 Mr. Walter Ackerman, proud principal of East Side High School, witnessed the graduation of almost 400 seniors. This class of June, 1961 celebrates the golden anniversary of its school and brings to a close the first half-century of progress. The nostalgic memories and high ideals of East Side High School will remain with each student, as he moves forward through the complicated, adult world outside. Education is a companion which no misfortune can depress, no crime can destroy, no enemy can alienate, no despotism can enslave. At home a friend, abroad an introduction; in solitude a solace, and in society, an ornament. It chastens vice, it guides virtue, it gives, at once, grace and adornment to genius. —Joseph Addison 19 ROBERT ALONSO Bobbte Activities: B nd 2. 3. As the waters creep surely upward the landmarks of the past are one by one submerged. But there shall always be memory to lift its head above the tide until the lake is overflowing —Alexandre Bisson 75 Largely because of the teamwork of our classmates, the Senior play, Growing Pains, turned out to be a big success. It marked the first time in the history of our school that any class had put on a play as a fund-raising project. It was far from easy to develop a group of inexperienced students into able performers, but Mr. Hailperin, our dramatic adviser, did just that. Even if the play had not been a financial success, it would have been worth producing for the experience it afforded us of collaborating on a production and the fun that naturally and inevitably resulted. Dressed as young men and women of the business world, they hurried back and forth preparing for the day ahead. After sixth period, all the seniors hurried to the auditorium for the traditional Senior Recognition Day program—the passing of the torch from the Senior A to the Senior B Class. The officers of each class were preceded down the aisles by girls bearing flaming candles. The audience rose as the torch was carried, for it has long been a symbol honored by all East Siders. Its significance can best be conveyed in the phrase inscribed on it— Carry On! At the close of the assembly program, the seniors proceeded to the gymnasium where refreshments and a band awaited them as final features of a wonderful day. 76 Senior Recognition Day 79 THE MISTLETOE HOP If you happen to be a non-believer of Santa Claus, then you should have been at East Side High School on the night of December 9, 1960. That was the night of the 12B dance which was quite appropriately called the Mistletoe Hop. About midway through the merry affair, Santa Claus arrived, his sturdy shoulders bearing a pack bursting with presents. Everyone was eager to see the surprises it contained. In fact, the girls were so enthusiastic, Santa dropped his pack and ran the other way while they seized all the gifts. Couples danced around a giant tree, decorated by scores of sparkling lights. The entire gymnasium was pervaded by the spirit of Christmas. Joyous girls and boys shouted wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, this last a glad omen for '61, our most important school year so far. 80 THE MARDI GRAS Mardi Gras was the theme of our Senior A dance. Gay decorations and a huge float in the center of the gym added to the festive mood of the crowd. The first hundred people to arrive received horns and multicolored hats. The Pastels provided us with melodious music, a collection of dreamy waltzes and peppy rock and roll numbers. Everyone was especially glad that this dance, our last fund raising affair, was so successful. 81 8jiI•’till! team tiling a thowar altar a tough gama. Its main duties are to provide an outlet for student opinion in school matters and to lead the students in activities which improve the school and aid the com-munity. During the past year. East Side's Student Council has sponsored such activities as a fund drive for retarded children and the establishment of a student lounge. The Student Council awards an activity letter for those who have served on the Council for three years and also to those who receive the greatest number of points for extra curricular activities. The officers: Patrick Calello, President; Georgia Basile, Vice-President; Patricia Rubas, Secretary; Angela Noviello, Treasurer. 88 ANNOUNCER STAFF REPRESENTATIVES 89 Scholarship, character, leadership, service these qualities epitomize members of the National Honor Society. The organization has 6,000 chapters throughout the United States. East Side's organization is known as the Torchbearer Chapter. Candidates are chosen as probationary members; upon graduation, those qualifying are inducted as permanent members. HONOR SOCIETY BUSINESS CLUB The Business Club was formed to give commercial students an opportunity to practice genuine office procedures. One of the many sorvices the club performs is the operation of the duplicating machine to assist the faculty. With the aid of films, trips, and lectures by guest speakers, the members gain a practical idea of what lies ahead in the business world. 90 The Senior Executive Council is composed of two representatives from each of the senior homerooms. The purpose of this council is to formulate the senior class policy. The senior class, through its executive council, voices its approval and disapproval on all pertinent senior matters. This is truly democracy in action. SENIOR EXECUTIVE COUNCIL LATIN CLUB The Latin Club, an outgrowth of an academic subject at East Side, has a growing membership. Movies, reports, contests, perusal of Auxilium Latinum, a national magazine, and interesting trips are a regular part of its program. The club sponsors an award given to a deserving Latin student once a year. Present officers are: Geraldine Rcndina, President; Joseph Fiordaliso, Vice President; Lucille Limaldi, Secretary; and Theodore Huzar, Treasurer. PROM COMMITTEE This committee is a representation of all senior homeroom's. Its function was to initiate and carry through any and all responsibilities in connection with the senior prom, Chanson des Fleurs. Its success was due in a large part to their herculean effort. 91 One of the functions of the Scienco and Electronics Club is to explore now areas of the scientific and electronic world. Within this club we may very well have some of the future scientists of the world. SCIENCE AND ELECTRONICS CLUB GARDEN CLUB With or without a green thumb, would-be members of the Garden Club need have only a healthy interest in horticulture. Under the direction of Mr. Faber, students learn to identify and raise plants. At Christmas time the club conducts a plant sale patronized by teachers and pupils alike. VISUAL AIDS CLUB Visual Aids equipment, (spotlights, phonographs and the like), is manned by students who forego study periods, thus enabling faculty and pupils to enjoy an enriched curriculum. 92 A toy to a sick child can often bo as effective a tonic as a doctor's prescription. To benefit others by such thoughtfulness is one of the aims of our Junior Red Cross. Once a month the group also sends representatives to a meeting of Newark high schools where an exchange of ideas occurs. Tho current officers are: Joan Boshko, president and Karen Szymanski, secretary. JUNIOR RED CROSS LIBRARY STAFF The girls of the library staff devote their spare time to aiding all who use library facilities. The duties demand steady effort, given in good measure by each member. The staff's president is Georgia Ba-site, the vice-president is Oiane Belas, and the secretary is Carolyn Chesney. PEP CLUB Let's go. East Side! is the chant of our vociferous Pep Club. This all-girl group attends football rallies and games and, we must say in all modesty, cheers the team members on to victory -usually. 93 SERVETTES Would you like to check your coat? This is a frequent greeting of our personable Servettes. As you may surmise, service is their main objective. At commencements, dances, and musical festivals, their help earns the appreciation of students and guests alike. Current officers are: Angela Noviello, President; Adrianne Gurdak, Vice-president; Carolyn Kazlau, Secretary; Georgia Basile, Treasurer. Potential teachers are preparing for their vocation by familiarizing themselves with the duties, responsibilities, and problems which confront teachers every day. Trips to local colleges are on the agenda for this club. The current officers of the Future Teachers of America are: President, Joseph Fiordaliso; Vice President, Alyce Bartel I; Secretary, Gloria Marino; Treasurer, Irene Cicalesc; Historian, lloyd Garris; and Parliamentarian, Joseph Maccia. The History Club is one of the most popular at East Side. Proof of this is the large membership of which the club may boast, lively discussions and debates are regular features. Officers are: Geraldine Rcndina, President; Alyce Bartell, Vice-President; Gloria Garcia, Secretary; Priscilla Eng-Wong, Treasurer. f)C 0 FUTURE TEACHERS HISTORY CLUB 94 KEY CLUB OF AMERICA Serving both the school and the community, our Key Club is one branch of a nation-wide organization. Members assist at school dances by taking charge of the coke machine and the coat room. This year the club's community service was to collect money for the Heart Fund. Officers are: President Lloyd Garris. Vice President Bill Levant, Treasurer Ronald Kresge, and Secretary Joseph Fiordaliso. Stee-rike! This exclamation brings joy to the hearts of any of the forty members of the Girls' Bowling Club. Each of the ten teams competes for trophies awarded at the year's end. The ever-growing popularity of this sport is certainly reflected here at East Side. Officers: Alyce Bartell, President; Elaine Entrabartolo, Secretary; Ellen Murphy, Treasurer. 95 GIRLS' BOWLING CLUB SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA BAND 96 DANCE BAND SPIRITUALS GIRLS' GLEE CLUB 97 The Music Department is a very integral part of the school program. The instrumentation is under the able direction of Mr. Nicholas DiNardo and the vocal groups are directed by Miss Emily Wilder and Miss Dorothy Hainer. Students at Fast Side High School have an opportunity to display their vocal talents through its many choral groups-the Spirituals, Choir, and Glee Club. If a student wishes to display his instrumental ability, he may do so through the Band, Orchestra, or Dance Band.
