Class History FRESHMAN YEAR On a clear, crisp day in February, a group of approximately two hundred students were entering the auditorium. These were the new freshmen. They sat. and started at once to talk about the many strange things they saw. and they were busy watching the preparations that were being made for their reception. Home room groups were called and home room advisers were assigned. Mrs. Schefter was named counselor, and later Mr. Flanagan became our adviser. This was a day to remember. From many schools, we had become classmates, and we had met those with whom we would share our experiences during the coming four years. Many were enrolled in different patterns of study and we each encountered new and different problems. Despite these few problems we found that our school work and our activities were very interesting and they brought us much pleasure. During this first year we established ourselves and became part of this large and busy school, and though impossible as it seemed at the time, we came through this first year and we were on the way to the second SOPHOMORE YEAR Having become established, in our second year we concentrated on our school work, although we branched out into sports and other activities. This year proved to be even better than our first, for now we were making progress as upper-classmen, and had begun the establishment of a class organization. The organizing of our class brought us many tasks and many problems, but with the help of our adviser, and other members of the faculty, we encountered what faced us and we wound up as one unified group. JUNIOR YEAR Our third year was a busy and enjoyable one. It was during this year that we heard the stressing of those three little words. “Pay your dues.” To raise funds we sold Christmas cards, and it was also during this year that we held our first class dances. We enjoyed sponsoring these class projects and we anticipated the coming school terms. Also, during this year, we became the proud wearers of our class rings. This was a long-awaited occasion. 36 When we reached the end of our third year, we felt the excitement of becoming Seniors ahead of us. SENIOR YEAR Our Senior year was one which we shall remember for many years to come. We started this year by choosing as class officers the following: President. Herman Alvarez: Vice President. Dolores Santos: Secretary. Phyllis Batista: and Treasurer. Frank Pinho. Having completed this, we settled down to business. On April 17. 1959. Senior Day. we felt the thrill of being recognized as Seniors in a solemn ceremony. We wore with pride our red carnations, the sign of a Senior B. as we sat in the auditorium and watched the Senior A President hand the Torch of Knowledge to our president, admonishing him with the thought that we were to carry it proudly, as all classes had done before us. Soon after Senior Day we had our class Prom at Military Park Hotel. It was a lovely night, and was enjoyed by all. Time flew by. we became Senior A s. and it again was Senior Day. and now we handed down the Torch to the new Senior B’s. Time grew short, and we reluctantly felt the approach of commencement. Our last gathering before graduation was the Farewell Dance. In due time, our graduation was upon us, and what had seemed in the beginning to be an eternity, had ended in the short span of four years. Here in the auditorium where we had first sat as new Freshmen we now sat again in anticipation, but this time to receive our diplomas. As we glanced around us at the many faces of our classmates, we recalled the fun, the excitement, and the work we had shared. Perhaps this would be our last time together. Perhaps there were many we would never meet again! Indeed we were entering upon a new life as we had four years before, and now. even as we had then made new friendships and had entered upon new patterns of living, we were about to begin the cycle anew Tonight as we would leave here and darkness and quiet would envelop these halls around us, again we would meet new friends and enter upon new patterns of living. Yesterday, today, tomorrow! How many yesterdays are behind us? How many todays have we? What of tomorrow? What is eternity? 37 Senior Prom It was a bright, clear evening at the close of a warm spring day. Deep purple shadows loomed through the greening trees in the park across the way, and the tall spire of an old historic church pointed like a finger toward the heavens, as traffic, in ever-flowing currents, streamed by at its foot. Here, at Military Park Hotel, was the scene of excitement on this night of May 1, 1959. As we came closer, we found everyone was heading toward the Duffield Room, which set the scene beautifully. Once inside, one was entranced by the surroundings. Seated at a table in the front of the room were the members of the faculty, eagerly anticipating the Seniors’ arrival. There was no surprise greater than their failure to recognize the couples as they entered. One beautiful girl after another seemed to float upon the arm of her handsome escort. In endless procession, they came until all the world was there, and we sat down to an enjoyable dinner. After dinner, strains of music filled the air as Mr. Di Nardo's orchestra drew dreamy melodies from their instruments. Music is. it seems, always written just for this lovely occasion! Dancing Seniors seemed to swirl and May 1, 1959 eddy about the floor, where their graceful movements painted a picture of rainbow hues and song, of light and of color and of sound. Light was music, and music was light. Rhythm kept the heart beat, and everyone floated up on a cloud. Then, for a moment, we awaited the coronation of the King and Queen. For this important decision, all the Seniors promenaded so that the faculty might choose the lucky pair. Then we had the happy couple before us, glowing radiantly. Our minutes were slipping by. and silently the couples faded into the night to dance away the remainder of the evening elsewhere. It seemed only fitting to continue the enchantment under New York City's bright lights, and to get lost in the endless cacophony of her unwritten music. In the wee small hours of dawn, the coach finally became a pumpkin again, and the snorting horses became mice once more. The music faded away in the distance behind us. and in its place the milkman's bottles clashed together in his metal baskets. We crawled sleepily into bed. and last night, the music, the Prom, all faded into our Summer Dreams.
