Only tries force because persuasion fails. Do you remember February of 1955? We entered, at that time, a new phase of life. Over 200 of us were received at East Side Commercial and Technical High School, in a newly constructed auditorium, as the 9B students. We became acquainted with a new school routine which was to become a part of our daily lives. The first summer passed and we returned to both joy and sadness. Although we had been here but a short while, everyone had come to know and honor Michael A. Windus. our football coach, and his death on October 7. 1955 was a great shock to all of us. In December, under the supervision of Mr. Jannarone. our class adviser, we held our first class meeting. Sports and other activities were patronized by many, and one of our earliest discovered athletes. Patsy Rozzo, attended an honorary dinner at the Essex House on January 9. 1956. Our class had decreased, since a new count recorded only 180 Sophomore B’s. Our school’s name was shortened and we were now attending. simply. East Side High School. A great tragedy had befallen the school on October 23. 1956. Dr. Henry A. McCracken, our principal, passed away. Everyone felt a deep sorrow, and in our hearts we thanked him for everything he had done for us. With the death of Dr. McCracken. Mr. Griffiths, our vice-principal, was acting principal until February. 1957. when Mr. A. Walter Ackerman, a former East Sider. was appointed to fill the principalship. He received a warm welcome and we wished him the best of everything for the future. Our Junior year brought a change in our class activities. We held our first elections and the officers, who were to serve the entire year, were; James Fife, President; Judy Hartman. Vice President; and Jo Ann Zentz. Secretary and Treasurer. We received our school rings this term and wore them with pride. The first class dance. Rhapsody in Blue , took place on May 10. 1957 and. as expected, proved a big success. To cope with the money problem, we sold Christmas cards and gift wrappings. 28 Mr. Ackerman announced a change in Senior Day. eliminating the stage show, and making it more formal in order to recognize the true meaning of that day. On January 10. 1958. we held our second dance. “Fantasy in Frost was a real winter wonderland dance. And. when January 24 came, we had a surprise in store for us . . . Final Examinations. The Senior Year began with the election of new officers: Frank Scholz. President; Roy Crawford. Vice President; Mary Ann Di Nicolas. Secretary, and Evangelina Aznar. Treasurer. In March our Senior girls displayed-their athletic skill in a basketball game with the women teachers, but unfortunately they lost 28-21. to their elders. Our proudest day in school was Senior Day on April 18. 1958. We were recognized as Seniors and also were given custody of the Torch of Knowledge. The happiest day of our social lives was that of our Senior Prom, which was held on May 2. Stardust filled everyone's eyes as we dined and danced in the Oxford Room, at Essex House. It was. surely, an unforgettable night, especially for Gail Schnegelberger and Charles Knehr who were elected Queen and King of the Ball. On June 3. we relived the famous past at our Roaring 20’s dance. The appearance of some of our girls made one wonder if it really was 1958. And so. with the termination of summer, our final term began. We held our final dance, the 12A Hop , on October 17. On Senior Day. November 21. we were hosts to the new 1 2B class who were recognized as Seniors, and who received the Torch of Knowledge from us. Our final days were heralded by the Farewell Dance which was held on January 23. We bid each other and the school farewell, and thanked everyone for four wonderful years of study and pleasure. On January 28. 1959. we received our diplomas and. ceremonies over, proceeded from the auditorium to greet the friends and relatives who had joined us on this festive occasion. As we left the building we realized we would never again return as carefree students. 29 MOST SCHOLARLY Carol Bieksha William Bartdl MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED MOST AMBITIOUS Gail Schnegelbergcr James Fife Gail Schnegclberger ;o eph Ferrigno MOST CHARMING MOST COURTEOUS Joan Staff Joseph Monies Diana Schwarz Michael lachio MOST POPULAR Judith Hartman Leroy Crawford NEATEST Marcy Wichowtki Daniel Lcmos DID MOST FOR CLASS Jo Ann Zcotz Michael Liszewski MOST CAREFREE Evangelina Aznar John Da Cotta MOST ATTRACTIVE Angela Melchiorre Patty Roxzo GREATEST DREAMERS MOST SOPHISTICATED BEST DRESSED Janet Kattcy Francis Maloney Essie Kintey Kenneth Williams Angela Melchiorre Daniol Lemos 30 MOST WANTED TO DATE Mill Berenguer Patsy Rozzo NICEST SMILE Hazel Pctrucclli Patsy Rozzo PRETTIEST EYES Evangclma Aznar Robert Tomezyk BEST DANCERS Carol Notto Frank Collar. It was a night we had all dreamed of since we were Freshmen! Walking into the Oxford Room of the Essex House on the evening of May 2. 1958, escorted by a handsome gentleman or escorting a lovely lady, we experienced many emotions. The soft music and dimmed lights added to our feelings. The girls looked lovely wearing yards and yards of chiffon and lace. The corsages they wore were the loveliest ever seen. With tiaras crowning their heads, each and every girl looked like a story-book princess. The gentlemen seemed extra-handsome on this festive occasion. Instead of the usual slacks and sport shirts, they had donned white dinner jackets, black striped trousers, and plaid bow ties. Fitting dress for a formal dinner, indeed! After everyone had arrived and had been seated, dinner was served The menu included grapefruit supreme, consomme, a choice of roast chicken or baked halibut, potatoes, peas and carrots. We finished the meal with Essex log and tea. coffee, or milk. Dinner being over, several couples rose either to dance or to take pictures which recorded not only our images but memories as well. Our evening was fleeting. The hours went as minutes, minutes as seconds, and time sped off into eternity. At the stroke of 1 1 :00 p.m. selecting the King and Queen began. This selection was based on the couple's appearance, personality, and poise. After much deliberation by the judges. Gail Schnegelberger and her escort. Charles Knehr. were chosen King and Queen. Three other couples were picked as their court. They were Carol Marek and Michael Liszewski. Priscilla Silveira and Wayne Kresge. and Angie Aznar and Bob Kulinski. Once again the music began, but our Prom had come to an end Soon the ballroom would be empty but the evening had only begun. The destination of most of the Seniors was New York City where many went to the Hawaiian Room, and others to the Latin Quarter, or Copacabana. Quickly, much too quickly, the hours went by. In the wee hours of the morning we hastened home, our arms laden with souvenirs we would treasure for the rest of our lives as remembrances of the night we spent in Stardust. Stardust, our Prom! The End a Last Will We. the members of the Class of January. 1959. being of sound mind, memory and understanding, do hereby make, publish, and declare this to be our Last Will and Testament: To MR. ACKERMAN, our principal, we leave the hope that he will enjoy his forthcoming years in the principalship of this great school. TO MR. GRIFFITHS we leave the hope that he has enjoyed our company as much as we have enjoyed his. To MR. JANNARONE, our class adviser, we leave a class which will never go into debt, which will pay all dues promptly, and which will be willing to work for its own good. To MISS CRUMMY, our guidance counselor, we leave the wish for a group of students who will know what subjects to take and who are willing to work hard at them. For DR. CAVICCHIA. poor lad. we wish a group of Seniors who can think of something original for The Torch and thus avoid his perennial — and justifiable — accusations of plagiarism. To MRS. KELLY we give thanks for her cooperation and assistance in the typing of material for this book. To MISS GRONHEIT we leave a home room full of quiet, diligent, honor students. To MR. JAY we leave a home room where the silence will remain unbroken by the chicking and chucking of synchronized gum-chewing. For MR. MAGISTRO, erstwhile class adviser during the illness of Mr. Jannarone. we leave the wish for spirited classes whose pockets jingle with currency. To MR. BOGATKO. ever-plagued with all-male home rooms, we leave a a room full of pretty girls. To the remainder of the faculty we give our thanks for their efforts in teaching us not only cold factual subject matter, but also the finer things in life which make for better living and better citizenship. To them we leave, with our fondest thanks, the knowledge that their work was not in vain. and Testament To the FRESHMEN we leave the thrill of walking through the corridors where once we trod. To the SOPHOMORES we leave the hope that they too will enjoy their stay at East Side. To the JUNIOR B's we leave the thrill and excitement of their class rings. To the JUNIOR A's we leave the warning that their remaining year will be filled with excitement, activity, and study. To the SENIOR B's we leave the joys of the Senior Prom, Senior Day. and of The Torch of Knowledge which will be entrusted to them, which we know they will keep burning brightly until they pass it on to their successors. Finally, to the entire student body we leave the awareness of their responsibility in keeping the name of East Side respected at all times. IN WITNESS WHEREOF we have hereunto set our hands and seals this 28th day of January, in the year of Our Lord One Thousand Nine Hundred' and Fifty-Nine. Signed, sealed, published, and declared as and for the Last Will and Testament of the Class of January, 1959 by its officers in the presence of us who. at their request, and in their presence, all being present at the same time, have hereunto subscribed our names as witnesses.
