The sum of all the colors—white. Such is THE TORCH, not just a glint Of facts ami faces, lines ami print. But rays derived from everywhere Unite to form THE TORCH'S flare. 52 BABY PICTURE KEY 1. We were all scrubbed and clean, ready for our first day in East Side. It took plenty of spunk to survive the juhhings of those Seniors. After a week of being told that we could find the cafeteria on the 3rd floor, get to the auditorium by the use of the elevator, attend gym classes in the basement, and lots more, we finally decided to suffer in silence and find our way around as best we could alone. Before many weeks had passed, most of us were acquainted with both Mr. Fast and Miss Kraemer. Homework was no myth cither. Strangely enough, there was such a thing. Then we attended our first assembly! W’c could barely tear ourselves away when the bell rang. Wc were cither too sleepy or just didn't know better. Birds, flowers, sunshine, cuts—yes. you guessed it, vacation and June, and report cards. You now have before you a group of bronzed Freshmen AY Summer was grand and glori- ous but going back to school was . . . (oh, nuts.) Wc bought dance tickets from the upper classmen but never danced, (if this wasn't high pressure salesmanship, what was?) Christmas came, and with it Pearl Harbor. Many of the boys wanted to join up along with the Seniors, but age held them back. New Year's resolutions, examinations, promotion, and with all that the rest of our class came. Yes, the “forgotten half'—the Annexers. We duhbed them Freshic-Saps and left it at that. Then Mrs. Rosen ami Mr. Neumcyer, our advisors, decided it was about time we got to know our classmates. Our first «lance included only the Sophomore class. It turned out the way they all do—the boys stood like strong silent pillars on one side of the gym, while the girls giggled and whispere«l on the opposite side. We didn't mind tho , at least we had gotten a glimpse at our “opportunities.” Vacation, and everyone was glad to drop books and studies to take up a new routine. Swimming, sleeping late, and having fun. Wc were Sophomore A's and before long we ba«! adjusted ourselves to regular hours and regular homework. But the term passed quickly and in passing we recall the Lollipop Dance, the excitement of Christmas, and promotion. Being a Junior should have felt different, but as it was, wc were still unchanged in spirit. The only visible change was in the fellows. Some were wearing ties and jackets, and making vainless attempt at growing beards. Now wc were old enough to vote. We campaigned with enthusiasm and the boards of all our class rooms were plastered with slogans and candi«lates' names. Vi hen the chaotic atmos- phere cleared and ballots ha«l been cast an«l counted, the results were: President: Gene Kondrat Secretary: Diana Ziugz«la Vice-President: Genevieve Tamburri Treasurer: Charles Farinclla Sergcant-at-Arms: Anthony Parrillo, Walter Boychick Spring arrived with a flourish of balmy breezes, blooming flowers, and quite a few bloom- ing love affairs. Oh, yes, those green young freshmen of yesterday were now Casanovas of first rate. 61 Many of our younger teachers had left their positions with the school to join the services and Mr. Newmeyer was no exception. He joined a chapter of the American Red Cross and with his departure wc lost a very fine and understanding adviser. Another summer had passed all too quickly and wc were once again hack in East Side ready for anything (as usual). Mr. Lumh didn't have much trouble with cuts those first few days he cause we were all wrapped up in studies and our summer reveries. We woke from our reme- niccnces long enough to elect a new set of class officers: President: Charles Farinella Secretary: Diana Ziugzda Vice-President: Genevieve Malakas Treasurer: Michael Rovi Sergeant-at-Arms: Edward Perepcka, Jackie Banias This term brought with it the boxing match which revealed the long hidden prowess of our hoys. Ardent admirers of the boxers almost immediately occupied the few ringside seats. Another important affair which brought us scurrying away from home for an evening of entertainment was the much awaited Amateur Show. It was an overwhelming success. Whew! We made it! We are now Seniors, if you please. Oh, yes, wc held elections again and as a result: President: Gene Kondratc Secretary: Diana Ziugzda Vice-President: Genevieve Malakas Treasurer: Mike Rovi Scrgcant-at-Arms: Walter Boychick, Edward Perepcka You should have seen Mike Rovi chasing due owers. He was a man to he shunned; our class Treasurer. But everything was finally straightened out and wc all took part in the gala spirit of Senior Recognition Day. Amid the gaping of Freshmen, and the soulful glances of Junior A’s, wc walked with our heads in the clouds. Suddenly the scene changed from one of slow, hut sure, moving studies, to a scene of rush- ing busy Seniors; buying crepe paper, cutting patterns, painting scenery, and building hand- stands, ordering refreshments, tuxedos and gowns. Days dragged along after preparations were finished hut then, almost suddenly, it was here. Oh! haven't you heard? We're preparing for our Prom! Our Senior Prom! (Sigh) The tuxedoes, corsages, and smart evening dresses worn by the handsome fellows and beautiful girls were all that was needed to complete the evening spent in the Tropics at our Tropical Promenade. Our final Summer arrived and many of us spent the early morning hours of each day in summer school. Though very few of us realized it, we were in the process of losing our remaining adviser, Mrs. Rosen. She did not return when September and school arrived. Upon returning we were informed that our new adviser was Miss Wetmore. Mr. Fast had been appointed last term. The polls were crowded on Thursday, at the September elections. Ballots were counted, excitement rose and everyone was on edge. And so wc.now have as President: Gene Kondrat Secretary: Diana Ziugzda Vice-President: Genevieve Malakas Treasurer: Charles Farinella Scrgcant-at-Arms: Anthony Parrillo, Pete Marzano It was here again. Now it was our turn to recognize the Senior B's. What with first rate fellows and girls dressed “to kill, or should I say “for the kill, it could be nothing less than a sensation, which it proved to be. The joy of coming Christmas and the New Year brings to our minds the knowledge that out of Joy is Sorrow born. So now, we find it is time to bid thee farewell “0 Alma Mater. 65 W H Name Otherwise Malady Alaimo. Mario Mario Monosyllables Almeida. Olga M Writing Andreine. John John Work Auriemma. His informers had told him that this was an out of the ordinary class since its members wrcre quite exceptional, although human (or is it humane?). As an observation point, the kitchen was well situated and probably would prove most interesting, thought Citronclla. as she nudged Archibald anti asked. “VI ho is that queer look- ing gentleman?” Archibald, looking somewhat aghast, hastily replied, “My deah young wom- an! That is no gentleman. That is Gilbert Sloan, the famous physicist, and he's talking to Dr. (?) Joe Freda and Pharmacist Harry Parkhurst. This information ended with something of a sigh as the former Miss America, Diana Ziugzda, walked in. accompanied by the aggressive Congresswoman, Genevieve Malakas. Then an excited gasp from Citronclla brought Archibald's attention to the opposite side of the hall, where Nctta Miske, stately Powers Model, and brawny (?l All Americans, Pap- sin and Parrillo. had just entered followed by Marge Goditus, farmerette, and Ccily Risley, Chorus girl. At a ringside table sat Gene Kondrat, (wonder if he uses Krcmel Hair Tonic?) Gover- nor of New Jersey with that Wall St. Tycoon Frank Guitart and Genevieve Tamburri, Eng- lish teacher. Gulping her third glass of punch we have our little songbird. Carmclla Policastra, with Politician. Eddie (vote for me I Pcrepeka wondering how she docs it. (Guess he's remember- ing those class socials.) Archibald called Citronella's attention to a group who were probably arguing about the formula of sulfa thiasolciodopyradine benzoate, (you pronounce it) They’re Mary Scarano, Gloria Pasqual. Marie Fisher and Madeline Cerrato. And to the left, our scientists, Adrian Meyer and Joe Saldutti, arc also indulging in a hit of arguing. They're competing for recognition as the Modern Einstein, you know. Incidently, the music is provided by the combined efforts of Charlie Farinella, (zoot suit kid) and Frank Humiston and their orchestras (?), who arc getting blue in the face trying to drown out one another. But the music is right in the groove as far as Bertie Gcmharski and Florence Latacz arc concerned. Don't give up girls. Vaudeville can he wrong. Teddy Enik and Nick Colella are comparing tactics used in their profession. Did you know you had to use your brains to he a “bouncer?” The chic and sophisticated Career girls who took their typewriter seriously arc Marion Chrumiak, Marie Pica, Jennie Lachcta, Margaret Hager and Rae Triano. 68 Looks like they’re in for a sermon on “How to lose friends and influence people,” be- cause that tempcrmcntal actress, Ann Dren, is headed their way, and as usual, not wanting to miss a thing, comes rushing Rosalyn Handshoe, History Teacher and Poetess Olga Al- meida. Bartenders Peter Billey and Eddie Bogusz arc informing our playboys Jack Banias and Walter Boychick of the latest in “Zombies”. Mary Couto and Mae Frank, efficient private secretaries, arc holding a pleasant conver- sation with cute little movie starlet Jo Sehilare. Gay Divorcee Dotty Lukasik is dancing dreamly with handsome humorist Tommy Landis. Did you hear? The Marzano boys have important government jobs! Not everyone can get on the Beureau of Sewers. The ex Misses Dotty Haliska, Rosemary Marasco. Eleanor Gawlik, and Lucy Romano are discussing baby formulas and pet peeves of friend spouse. Nursing, as a profession, looked interesting to Angela Roeco, Ann Corella, and Sare Meknis. (Oh! what handsome doctors one meets.) Dynamic Vincent Galucci and “cute” Joe Lopes are sharing tips on how to he a good salesman. They started the hard way. (Hey what about buying a season pass?) The roving bachelor, Patsy Re, is making his way toward industrialists Francis Korol and Vito Rossi. Advertising executives, Pat Mulhearn and Kitty Timinski, arc giving Sales girls Helen Auricmina and Carmel la Fol a few pointers on how to make people part with their long green. Rachel Larangiera, Mary Lcto, and Irene Kmctz are latecomers adding to our Career girl's consultation. looking just as handsome without his doorman's uniform, Fred Carvalho shyly strides in. Ginny Lohiando, mother of six, is coming his way (sociable as ever). Sylvia Schertzer, bookkeeping whiz, and Frank Wexlcr. Math teacher, arc getting along fine in their conversation. The children must have been difficult today, for Dotty Sokolski. Adriana Lcsacchi. and Nancy Pctracca arc making a late entrance- heading straight for the Wife congregation. Our ever secluded group of handsome mechanics, who have turned actors, Benedict Bitt- ner, Ed. Czarkowskc, Ed. Dulinidas and Vincent Spagnuolo. are trying to persuade the ec- centric millionaires, Charles Loredo and Nick Vignola, to hack the promising (?) career of James Dadenas at the Metropolitan Opera House. Trying to eavesdrop, are Marie Benedito. blithe model. Jennie Chin, spry chorus girl, and Modesta Torrens, South American Tornado. Our popular bathing beauties, Hortensia Lopez, Genevieve Rispoli. Josephine Sequiro, and Anne Tomasula arc arguing heatedly on their new duck-waddle swim stroke while Iona Speed, Marie Ferrcirinha, and Violet Orzcchowski, secretaries, look dazedly on. Mildred Benovich and Marie Cicchino are discussing plans for their coming women's convention and shrewdly watching Stcffic Stanislaw, gal “Detective” busily spying on Mike Velo another “D”—whom she believes is escaped “Two gun Pete”. Archibald beams contentedly, as he settles hack comfortably to survey the happy lau“h- ter and clatter of the guests, who are eagerly greeting classmates after long years of separa- tion and who can't seem to get enough of each other. But—BANG!—he is interrupted by Cietronell's idea of an alarm clock (a good waek on the noggin with a frying pan I which reminds him that his ardous, putoff task of serving dinner with graceful (?) Citronella must at last he tackled. 69 EAST SIDE HIGH SCHOOL ANNEX Tn 1856, fifty-five year before East Side High School was opened. South Market Street School was built. For many years it served as an elementary school during which time it housed several hoys who later became prominent citizens of Newark, one eventually being elected mayor of the city. It was used, for a time, as a hoys' continuation school, and then in the fall of 1935 the enrollment at East Side was so large that it became necessary to open an annex building and South Market Street School was the one chosen. In the course of the past nine and a half years some 2,850 pupils have taken their ninth grade training at the Annex from approximately fifty teachers. If you were to ask the large majority of these students and teachers, and we suggest that you corner a few, they would tell you that their memories of the Annex arc very pleasant. In spite of the age of the building and the resulting unattractiveness of it physically, it has in it a spirit of friendliness and good fellowship which makes it to those who have felt this a very satis- fying memory. Most of the pupils who complete a year at the Annex go to the main build- ing for their three remaining years of high school. There they find a wider field of clubs and various extra-curricular activities in which each year there is a representative number of former Annexcrs. This year among the forty- seven members of the Honor Society, there arc at least twelve who attended the Annex: Margaret Ditzl Helen Golcj Mary Hrcnko Gene Kondrat Thomas Landis Rose Landolphi Jane Latimer Genevieve Malakas Antoinette Miskc Joseph Saldutti Sylvia Schertzcr Irene Zatorski The football roster includes sixteen Annex hoys: Jack Banias Nick Collclo Ben Di Giovani Ted Enik Ray Lcwandowski Rocco Nobile Albert Nortdf John Papiani William Papsin Tony Parrillo Ernest Pataky Charles Pipczyaki Nick Shymko Frank Tingola James Turner Charles Zern Twenty-two Anncxers play with either the hand or the orchestra. Scores of Annex “grads” are serving their country in the various branches of the armed forces, and not a week passes at the Annex without a visit from an “old hoy” in uniform. Because of the building program now under consideration by the Board of Education, we cannot look forward to many more years of activity at the Annex, hut we can look hack at a gratifying and wholly pleasant phase of our school life. 70 MOVI IE TITLES FOR SENIO RS Gann’s All Here Class of Jan. 45 The Memphis Belle Marie Pica The 1 m patient Years Our May at EaM Side Mister Big Eddie Bogusz Standing Room Only Miss lliggin Office Jungle Woman Marie Ferreirinha The Doughgirls Girl of Class Jan. 45 Hurricane Smith Frank Wexler Thousands Cheer Crowd at our Football Garnet Hurricane Catherine Timinski Hitler’s Gang 4A Officer Trumpet Man Frank Humiston The Great Moment Graduation Day Delightfully Dangerous Genevieve Respoli So Proudly We Hail Mr. Fast Juke Girl Cecilia Risley Since You Went Away Mr . Ah! . . . Thai hearty hand which holds undisputed domain over the halls of East Side High, (third floor). At the start, the Commandos were a homogeneous group under the able leadership of Mr. Liddy. Soon, however, our mob was divided into four groups: 1. those who rose be- fore the sun to make an 8:30 class at 8:00; 2. those who rose at 8:15 to make an 8:30 class at 8:30; 3. Joe Freda, who rose at 9:30 to make an 8:30 class in time for showers (10:00 o'clock I 4. Frank Guitart, who never came. Shortly, though, Mr. Liddy impressed us with the fact that 8:00 o'clock or 8:30 was O.K.—But—!!! We left school in June almost completely built up by those mile runs in Rivcrhank Park. Some of our hoys, however, weakened under the strain of carrying Nose Parrillo and Nickie Colella hack to school. In our second term, this time under the appelation “Rangers”, hut still divided into those four groups, (with the majority in the third and fourth), we came into the fold of Mr. Horwitz. Our first Herculean labor under Mr. Horwilz was the erection of those giant maples surrounding our Alma Mater, trees which had been felled by the hurricane. Our labor battalions were com- manded by Colonels Vincent Gallucci and Michael Velo. Gallucci and Velo, incidentally, arc men who worked themselves up the hard way—up the ropes and over the obstacle course. After our tree raising expeditions, Mr. Horwitz, noticing our method of playing basketball, or should 1 say. after recognzing the game we were playing, decided that mile runs and obstacle courses were not needed. So we retired to the gym and halls, where the extent of damage is still being calculated. And so we arc on our merry way, contemplating the continuance of our Ranger training, not under Uncle Horwitz, but under Uncle Sam. 72 [o BE.ST SHAPES IN TM£ ALWAYS AwAKEg) SPORTS p AST SlDF. mark this graduation with the loan of six of its first-rate athletes. We were entering the portals of East Side High School! Little did we realize then that a war-torn world would be awaiting our graduation in June. 1945. Never- theless. we HAVE managed to have our fun. It would take more than the threat of secret weapons and a manpower shortage to dampen our spirits. Yes, sad as they have been, the years have not been without their brighter moments. Do you remember our freshman year and how we searched in vain for that elevator? And it wasn't long before we became well acquainted with Miss Kraemer and Mr. Lumh. Time flew; and, before we realized it, our first exams loomed before us. Weren’t we relieved to sec those summer holidays finally arrive! Then, all of a sudden, no longer were we “Frcshics hut full fledged Sopho- mores—except in a subject or two—; and little did we care that the Seniors referred to us as “Saps.” Summer vacation once more arrived; and. after school closed, we just disappeared. Jeepers, the year must have gotten the better of us, for now’ we were reciting poetry. Can you imagine? It was grand returning to school again to see old friends and teachers. But studying—that is another story! This was our great year! Miss Bloomfield and Mr. Horwitz organized our class. Not many came to our first meeting, but it was a beginning, and most of us profited by it. Do you remember our first campaign and the posters of the various candi- dates displayed throughout the school? Election Day came at last. The results: John PaPIANNI—President Joe Marano—Treasurer Dotte Since—Vice-President Eleanor Yashllewtcz—Historian Evelyn Olko—Secretary St. Patrick's Day arrived; and, along with the wearing of the green, came our first dance. Since it was a complete success, although the boys did sort of hold the wall up, we were inspired to greater affairs. No one was surprised, therefore, when we were once more successful in an attempt to entertain our audience in our famous Amateur Hour. Finally, the second term was upon us and the necessity of selecting officers also. The campaign, which was an exciting one, culminated in the election of the following: Edward Thompson—President Barney Capricuone—Treasurer Dotte Since—Vice-President Eleanor Yashllewtcz—Historian Evelyn Oleo—Secretary 62 Smash! Bang! “That-a-boy, Joe, echoed from all sides of the auditorium one afternoon. Impossible! Well, the truth of the matter was that our class was presenting its Boxing Matches. The girls screamed! The boys boxed! It was a hectic afternoon! Spirits were high, marks were low; hut we plodded on and on. We laid plans for our From, which, because of the War, was to be sponsored by both the Senior B's and our own class. The fact that we were Junior A’s did not mar our pleasure, for the evening ended all to soon. As Seniors, we should have felt terribly learned; but somehow we were still unchanged in spirit. We did realize, however, as only Seniors can realize, how momentous our problems were. During our Senior B term we were ruled by the firm and capable hands of Barney Capriclione—President Norman Kurtz—Treasurer Dottf. Si. ck—Vice-President Tkrry Forlfnza—Historian Elizabeth Woods—Secretary Yes, sir, big business was certainly the order of the day! Our dimes re- luctantly found their way into the hands of our Treasurer, who bellowed, “Pay up or else!” We day-dreamed through the day of our Senior “Rec”, and I believe we fell asleep that night with the firm realization that we were Seniors B's at last. Other activities then held our attention. One can scarcely forget our blank look of amazement and disbelief at the wonders we witnessed during our Hour of Magic. To be sure, the dance which followed was a gala affair. Can you be- lieve it? The boys really left their beloved walls and danced with the girls! Our rings finally arrived, and were the teachers shocked to sec the vast number of hands raised that day! Why? Our rings gleamed—and the answer was usually wrong anyway. Before we knew it, we were Senior A's; and it was our turn to recognize the Senior B's. My, my, how we did flutter here and there that day! We were subdued just long enough to hear our President address our guests assembled in the gym. In spite of our work on The Torch and preparations for the Recognition, we did manage to find time for our final class election, at which we elected: Barney Capriglione—President Joseph Marano—Treasurer Dotte Sinck—Vice-President Terry Forlenza—Historian Elizabeth Woods—Secretary Soon our high school life will end. but we have already prepared a special place for it in our hall of memory—a place of honor and of distinction. We await with awed anticipation our Senior A Dance and our Commencement. Then, along with our boys who are leaving to serve our country, we shall bid thee farewell, dear East Side High School. 63 (LASS WILL WE’ the Class of June, 1945, of East Side High School, City of Newark, County of Essex, and State of New Jersey, being of sound mind and body, do here- by make this, our last will and testament, in the following manner: 1. June 20. 1060 STARDUST GUIDE LILLIAN McNITSKY John Anello’s turning into a musical softie, and you can blame it all on a dynamic old gent called Paul Rocke. A few weeks ago. when Johnny was tooting at the Paladium, Rocke dropped in with a group of friends to watch the jive maestro do his fancy stuff on the saxaphone and watch Williette Raab beat it out on the ivories. As the music blasted louder and loud- er, his friends noticed that Rocke shud- dered. Concerned about his sensitive eardrums, they inquired if he wished to leave. He remained motionless in his chair. During the intermission, Rocke sud- denly rose. Marching up to Anello, he casually introduced himself. “Your music. I love it, he said; “but. if I may offer an opinion, your band is a trifle too loud and your vocalist is drowned out. Did Johnny toss him a you-tend- your-knitting-and-I'll-tend-to-mine an- swer ? He did not! He was so bowled over by the master's interest that the next day he rushed out and added ten new strings to his orchestra. His vocalist.
