Hamrick — Principal Debbie Self — Editor Jenny Shipley — Assistant Editor Joy Cromer — Advisor VOLUME 23 East ... Where Memories Are Made Where Dreams Begin 2 ntroduction Dreams Of ... Dreams of ... Beginning in high school in the back of every student's mind, thoughts begin to form concerning ambitions, goals, and dreams. Each student works to make his or her dream a reality. High school can be the first step down the road to reaching goals. As freshmen, we dream small — hopes of meeting that cute upper classman, or simply to pass and to learn the new subjects. After beco ming sophomores, our dreams also mature. When we finally become juniors, our thoughts are not just of becoming seniors, but of choosing a college, doing well on the S.A.T., and deciding on a career. Dreams really begin to flourish in the minds of seniors — hopes of the future and dreams of seeing old friends years after that final year in school. It only takes a small wish, or hopes of change, to give life to full- fledge dreams. Whenever a dream is born, try to follow it. After all, dreams are what separates TODAY from TOMORROW. Introduction 3 Growing And ... Eee Sei ear SERRE te pet ates vidual 4 Introduction Every day we come to school we take a test or turn in homework. We even read (now and then) Admit it, we are so wrapped up in the labor of school that we take teachers for granted. While we have to study teachers have to make out tests, plan interesting projects, and try to make algebraic equations fasci- nating. If it weren't for their dedication and effort, we would leave East as empfty- headed as when we came in. We owe much of what we become, as well as our contributions to society, to teachers and those authority figures whom we often ignore. So, the next time you are dozing off in class, remember that the teachers standing at the board, handing out those work pages, or leading your class discussion are trying to give you a headstart in life. There és life after high school, and the fittest and the strongest, and the ones who are prepared, will be the ones to survive. Not long after that last diploma is handed, and that last cap goes up in jubilation, many graduates head for Myrtle Beach. There, they enjoy fun, sun and their first tastes of “freedom.” After the summer's over, there will be those who hit the books again. Our seniors won't stop being stu- dents until four more years pass for some, who will be attending uni- versities and colleges. Others will choose two-year industrial or voca- tional training programs, while some will participate in special training programs such as cosmoto- logy or electrical careers. For others, their life choices will result in marriage, going to work around Ruther- ford County, begin- ning new families as well as becoming ac- tively involved in the adult world. What- ever the choices, the seniors will never again relive these same experiences, but will endeavor to challenge new ones. Introduction 9 REALITIES ARE JUST OVER THE RAINBOW Cc 2 ca uU =] uU O° = = 4 The Senior class and faculty dedicates the 1985 Lancer to Mrs. Tinnie Mae Dawkins. Mrs. Dawkins, a native of Sanford, North Carolina, has been on the faculty at East Rutherford since 1966. Married to James Dawkins of Forest City, and mother of four children: Rowena, Artina, James, and Beth, Mrs. Dawkins is esteemed for her involvement with students through the Student Council in which she has served as advisor for eleven years, as well as her teaching history and government classes. It is a time for sharing, caring and being with the ones you love, Not to mention helping the ones in need. This year the Student Council took charge over Operation Santa Claus. They placed boxes in banks all around the county in which the community contributed various items for the needy families. The Jr. Civitans sponsored a clothes drive and collected food for the needy families around the county. Of course, everybody's favorite — SANTA! Through out the year we have been approached by these ques- tions: “What color is the book? Who chose Mr. Miss Lancer? Who received the teachers dedication? When will the book be here? Is my picture going to be in the yearbook?” It is our hope that all of the time and work put into this book has made this Lancer your favorite of all the Year- books at East Rutherford High School. Spe- cial thanks to Mrs. Cromer who believed in my leadership abilities, to the faculty Mr. Hamrick for their encouragement and to my loyal staff who worked exceptionally well together. Producing a Yearbook is an experience everyone should encounter and one | shall never forget. Sincerely, Debbie Self 212 Editor’s Page Editor: Debbie Self Asst. Editor: Jenny Shipley JOSTENS
