Hamrick, Principal Gina Norris, Editor Dawn Joyner, Assistant Editor Joy Cromer, Advisor VOLUME 22 On August 29, 1983 a new year was set aflame at East Rutherford High School. With a burst of energy and excitement the students rekindled the fires of learn- ing. A Spark of Class! According to Web- ster’s Collegiate Dictionary, class is de- fined as: “I. a course of instruction, 2. a body of students whose year of gradu- ation is the same; 3. quality.’’ These types of class are definitely prevalent at East. We have 109 different levels and types of courses held daily ranging from academic courses like English and history to miscel- laneous electives. At our school the fresh- men, sophomores, juniors, and senior classes are constantly involved in main- taining the “classiness’ of style in both actions and clothing. We show. our “class” by showing consideration and re- spect for others. 2 Introduction Of Class Introduction 3 |. Susan Jenkins 2. Mamie Wilkins 3. Suzy Trunk 4. Lisa Luckadoo 5. Specif: 1) Any fact or truth or fact, or the aggregate of facts, truths, and principles, known, acquired or retained by the mind.” Funk and Wagner's New Standard Dictio- nary. The freshmen or “new kids in town” come to East Rutherford High School expecting to find clubs, pep rallies, and other things under the heading of “high school fun”, but we find these things and more. We also find new things to learn, such as the number of lives of Mrs. Proctor’s Advanced Biology cats; the anatomy and cardiovascular system of frogs; analytical proofs and geo- metical theoroms; how to make character screens in computer science; the facts behind the Salem witch trials of 1692; our nation’s development and crisises; as well as numerous other aspects of higher intellectual thinking such as fallacies and an Kindles The 8 Introduction After a while when papers, assignments and deadlines seem to pile up, we often seem to ponder, “Why Me?” But when that last test is complet- ed, that last paper completed, we hear a sigh of relief. As soon as.we gain enough knowledge to survive “life after high schooll”, we think about the fun and good times that were had. But then isn’t that what high school is all about? We find classes to be interesting, entertaining, humorous, provaca- tive, or dull depending upon our mood for the day, the teacher for the course, or attitude toward the subject and the classmates surrounding us. Teachers are a chief complaint, but we must also be thankful that they care about us and go to the trouble they do to help us acquire new knowledge. Knowledge comes in many facets and disguises. Each day some new information is gained even though we may not be aware that we are smarter than the day before. ey Introduction 9 10 Introduction Streaking Toward | Teachers at East have many jobs they must do, more than just teach, in fact some of the jobs the teachers do are more tedious than teaching. Let me tell you what a few of these little jobs are: Mr. Gettys makes sure there is no speeding in the parking lot; Coach Shepard can always be found on D-hall during lunch giving good advice; Mrs. Moss seems to be the only teacher at East who doesn’t take a break, and she’s only a substitute; When Mrs. Jernigan is not instructing P.E., you can find her practicing for her acting career; Mrs. Hastings does not work as hard as it seems, she really has a - f 4 Wp bad « magazine on her desk; And we all know teachers have to eat to keep up with all the jobs that must be done. Excellence For the 1983-1984 year the senior class chose to dedicate our annual to Mr. Joseph Victor Jones. He began teaching in 1956 at Ellenboro High School. With outstanding qualities, especially understanding and compassion, he has become an avid outdoorsman and a great teacher. He has co-ordinated the Sr. activities for a number of years. His wife’s name is Rachel and he has a son namd Kelly. For his dedication and service, we, the senior class, dedicate our annual to him. Introduction Il 4 : ot we e Each year challenges a different horizon in experiencing new friendships. There are many ways to introduce the new acquaintances, for example: While shoving your way through the halls you may bump into someone you have yet to meet. On the arrival of the new role call you listen for names which you have not heard before, as the year progresses you match faces with the new names. Friendships may also arise over a typical daily conversation inside the crowded cafeteria while eating lunch. The friendships you experience during your years at East Rutherford will remain with you throughout the rest of your life. 12 Introduction Ds Wie y iy ys Introduction 13 Fashions at East range from leg warm- ers over jeans, under jeans, over tights, for warmth, for decoration and for fun, to the punk look which is still “in”. The local punksters are in style with their short colored hair, miniskirts, tights, and balle- rina slippers. Belts were an addition to 1983-1984 style ranging from wide color coordinated sashes to the old narrow standards. Gaushos, or split skirts, re- turned from the early days of the ’70’s style with the add-a-bead necklaces re- maining a popular accessory. Class rings are always in style, espe- cially the junior year. Rings came in all shapes and sizes, stone colors and metals. Rings represent to us completion of school, our alma mater, exchanges of love as Well_as_ the expense of high school. Flashes of excitement are seen at pep rallies as we gather to cheer our athletes, have fun and burn energy. The band, the noise, the color and the cheerleaders always help to ease the tension of a routine school day. When one goes to junior high one doesn't expect the true life of high school. When finally at East, new friends are met and life-long friendships are established. High school can be the most exciting time of our lives, so we should make the best of our days spent here and grab all the flashes of excitement available. Student Life A new program has been started at East High. This program is called Dropout Prevention Job Placement. It is a program funded through the Job Training and Partnership Act to aid students in gaining employability skills as well as skills to complete their high school education. The major emphasis is being placed on (I) preventing stu dents from dropping out of school and (2) placing students in full time or part-time jobs. The students eligible to participate in the pro- gram are economically disadvantaged youth who are 14-21 years of age. The target groups of par- ticipants are high school seniors, juniors, sopho- mores, and freshmen (in that order) experiencing academic difficulty, financial problems, or other school adjustment problems that relate to ser- vices offered by the program.
