Dear Mrs. McGrath and Mr. Richert, When you’re lost, what do you say to someone who guides you? When you’re discouraged, what do you say to someone who restores your hope? When you stray in many directions, what do you say to the advisors who took the “puzzle pieces” and reunited the group? What do we, the Class of 1988, say to you? Our response is nothing fancy or profound —just something very sincere and heartfelt — “THANK YOU!” Without your help, our jigsaw puzzle would never have been put together. With Much Love, The Class of’88 2 Advisors Advisors 3 As we graduate from East Rockaway High School, we move on to higher levels of maturity and reason. We leave high school with a sense of accomplishment and independence, yet the decisions we make during these trying times yield a long-term effect on our lives. We are on our way to completing each of our own individual jigsaw puzzles. Each exploit, each choice we make is another piece to the puzzle. As time passes, each piece interlocks with the others. During high school, we added some of the most crucial puzzle pieces. As we go out into the world, be it college, work, or any other field we choose, we are accumulating the pieces necessary to keep completing the puzzle. 6 Candids Uh-oh ... On Thursday night. May 21, 1987, many of our parents watched us get ready for our big night. “Through the Years” was a perfect theme for us because that night we talked about all the happy times we had been through with each other “Through the Years.” The girls were all so beautiful and the boys all so handsome in their formal attire. Dr. Semergieff has contributed much to the puzzle that makes up our collective lives. She continually works harder for us and our school, and for that we thank her. MR. EDWARD CROWLEY As an important piece to the puzzle, Mr. Crowley has expressed his guidance and understanding to us throughout the years in the school. He will be remembered by each student in a special way, just as each piece of a puzzle is unique in his own special way. MR. GERALD HONIG Mr. Honig is a corner of our puzzle. His good humor and positive attitude have shown many a time in his aiding us with our own puzzles and problems. An effective administrator, Mr. Honig has helped make our time spent here enjoyable. 18 Faculty MR. ROBERT PARRY A seldom noticed yet still integral piece of the puzzle. Mr. Parry strives to meet the challenges that the school district provides for him every day. During our time spent here we have seen him rise from Principal to Superintendent, ever remindful by him to take pride in our puzzle. BOARD OF ED Each month these individuals meet to discuss the pieces of our puzzle that will ultimately effect us, both positively and negatively. Their hard work and diligence makes it possible to guide the district into one orderly, interlocked unit. P.T.A. This group of caring parents helps the students and faculty of ERHS with some unique solutions to equally unique puzzles. This includes their scholarships and the Rock Rivalry Journal. Their positive attitude and accomplishments help us put together our individual pieces, and are greatly appreciated. MR. ROBERT JACOBY There exists those whose puzzles are not easily solved and that is where Mr. Jacoby comes in. As Director of Special Education, Mr. Jacoby helps those individuals put their places together into a more cohesive form. By helping these few, he makes the school a better place for all. SPECIAL ED SECRETARIAL STAFF Helping Mr. Jacoby with his puzzle, the Secretarial Staff keeps their department’s pieces together and in order. One could not ask for a more dedicated and determined staff. MAIN OFFICE SECRETARIAL STAFF Without these ladies surely our puzzle would come apart. The industrious secretaries carry out many duties taken for granted by the rest of the school, keeping the school running in a smooth, orderly fashion. MR. STAN GERMAIN Like many other things, puzzles cost money. Who else could do this but our greatly appreciated custodial staff? The efforts of both the day and night crews help us participate and enjoy our extracurricular activities. It’s always nice to enjoy good food while working on a puzzle, and the culinary staff always makes that possible. Mere words cannot even start to convey the thanks we owe to these women for the times they have spent cooking for us. MRS. MARTHA YOSWEIN MR. Membership is limited to those who keep up high standards such as good leadership, community service, and the maintenance of a well-rounded academic and social life. FRIENDS PROGRAM Another outstanding example of community service, the Friends program helps kids by being “big brothers and sisters,” helping them grow up and deal with the problems that life throws at them. The team invests much time and hard work in C preparation for each case, and with the mix of veterans and newcomers |h both, successful results come out time “1 after time. By educating the seventh and eighth graders as to the negative affects of drugs and alcohol, the Student Peer Organization continues to provide a good example for our students and an invaluable service to the entire community. A noble community service organization, Students Against Drunk Driving is entering its fifth year in educating the students with the problems of drunk and drugged driving. Along the way, we made mistakes but took them in stride and learned from them. Rock Rivalry takes a great deal of time and effort and although we hit a lot of bumps going down this year’s Rock Rivalry road, we managed to pull everything together in the end and celebrate with the cup for the 52nd Rock Rivalry weekend. The competition this year for the cup was awesome, and although we, the Junior Class of 1989, were the winners, in reality there were no losers. All four classes were victorious because they were able to show that by coming together as a unit, an A 1 performance can be given. When Rock Rivalry comes around, rivalries form among the classes. To say that there should be no rivalry is senseless, but when rivalries form among friends in competing classes you know something’s gone wrong. When Rock Rivalry ends, the outcome should be accepted and the rivalries should end. While a rivalry among the classes is easily forgotten, a rivalry among friends is not. We would like to thank all of the classes for making this Rock Rivalry a very memorable one. We must also thank each and every one in the Junior Class who put any amount of time and effort into this year’s Rock Rivalry. Is that the shiny, silver thing that the Juniors rode around the oval with? Or maybe the thing that the Class of ’86 rallied around at their victory party? I’m not sure. I know we never had one. Unlike the other classes in our four-year tour-of-duty, the Class of’88 has never received the “cup.” Yet, when one compares the “cup” to the intangible treasures Rock Rivalry has to offer, the “cup” does not hold a candle to them. For starters, you have friendship, determination, co-operation, responsibility, competition, and fun (to name a few). As, one can see, when it comes to Rock Rivalry, there are no true losers. Everyone is a winner. You get out of it what you put into it. Now that the pieces have come together, we can see a picture neatly formed that is quite pleasing to the eye. And as said before, many people contributed and we would like to thank those people for their art, writing, time — whatever it was that helped this yearbook be the best that it could be. One important piece of our puzzle was cost. Kevin and Maureen did their best to obtain funds needed to produce this yearbook. Of course, when one thinks of a yearbook one thinks of pictures and our photography staff, led by Joe, Rachel, and Joe, provided us with terrific pictures. To go along with those pictures, Tim, Sharon, and Kerry and the rest of the literary staff wrote the words. The art staff, headed by Rob and Justin showed us their talent in the art that they have given to the yearbook.
