It was an evening of glamour, romance, and memories. “Heaven” had fulfilled every meaning of the word. We would like to thank all those who helped make us a “Heaven” here on Earth. 12 The Prom 14 Candids Dear Seniors, You are the class which begins East Rockaway High School’s second fifty years. The first fifty years imparted to us the standards and traditions under which you entered this school. During your tenure here, those standards were raised and the traditions became more entrenched. You have had to respond to those changes. Frequently your response has provided us with the awareness of the direction which this high school must follow. The adaptations which the Class of ’87 has had to make to meet the changes and the increased demands has provided an excellent learning situation. Throughout the lives of the individual members of this class adaptations will have to be made and new demands will need to be met. Our staff has tried to provide you with knowledge of specific subject matters. It has also attempted to assist you in learning the various aspects of daily living. It is our hope that the specific and general knowledge which you have acquired here will provide you with a strong foundation. The teachings of your families and of your school are the basis of your training and must provide you with your competitive edge. KATHLEEN SEMERGIEFF Although Dr. Semergieff has not been here a long time she has made a memorable impression on us. In everything she does Dr. Semergieff has only one thing in mind — that of the good of the school. ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL MR. EDWARD CROWLEY As Assistant Principal Mr. Crowley has come to know most of us in one way or another. During this time he has become known as a strict disciplinarian who is also willing to help you at any time. ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL MR. GERALD HONIG Although he has more responsibilities this year Mr. Honig still has time for a smile and hello in the halls. It is things like this and his fairness in carrying out the duties of his job that make him well liked and respected. 18 Faculty SUPERINTENDENT MR. ROBERT PARRY In every great publication there is a behind the scenes person that does a lot of the work but is seldom noticed. Mr. Parry is this person. In our years at ERHS we have seen him progress from Principal to Superintendent and during this time he has earned our admiration. THE P.T.A. This is a group of dedicated parents whose purpose is to help the students and faculty at ERHS. They do this by offering scholarships and the Rock Rivalry Journal. Their attitude and actions toward the students at ERHS is irreplaceable. THE BOARD OF ED Every month these individuals meet to discuss all the issues facing the schools in our district. It is through their hard work that this district is able to be run in the orderly fashion that it is. Faculty 19 SPECIAL ED SECRETARIAL STAFF MR. ROBERT JACOBY Mr. Jacoby labors day in and day out to make our school capable to contribute hopes and dreams to those who have not been quite so advantageous. With a brave heart he seeks out and helps them find opportunities which they may not find elsewhere. Aiding Mr. Jacoby in his never ending battle to find opportunities for the less advantageous is the dedicated and capable secretarial staff. THE SECRETARIAL STAFF Files, records, passes, readmits, and about a thousand other things are done every day by our beloved E.R.H.S. secretarial staff. Without them the school day wouldn’t run as smooth as it does. STAN GERMAIN Without Mr. Germain the school would be a financial disaster. He keeps our school in great financial shape. John Meagher The most prestigious organization in the school, the National Honor Society, is a very select group. Having to be elected into the group by a panel of teachers, the members of the National Honor Society exemplify those traits most admired in students. This year we saw Mrs. Ricken take over as advisor and lead the group through its endeavors. As Freshmen we did not know what to expect but learned very quickly. The long meetings, disagreements, and i sacrifices were all worth it. Although we did not reach all our goals, we are proud of our accomplishments. If it were not for a few certain people none of this would have been possible. Our thanks go to our four chairpersons who never gave up and always pushed for more. To Mr. Severino, who dedicated his time and energy to make the 51st Rock Rivalry a j memorable one. To the Junior Class — your support and advice | was very appreciated. You were always there for us. Our warmest thanks go to Mr. Rick Hackett, our class advisor. Knowing little about Rock Rivalry, he still pulled us through when we were ready to “throw in the hat.” We are looking forward to next year’s Rock Rivalry. When we sang these words as we finished our part in that memorable Rock Rivalry night, we truly believed them. We still do. The Class of 1989 has come a long way since last year. In our freshman year, we experimented; we tried some things that worked, some that didn't. However, this year we believe we made our mark on Rock Rivalry with our first place Entrance and second place overall. It is not many Sophomore classes that do that. We would like to thank everyone who has guided us through the good times and bad: Mr. Severino, the erudite advisor of Rock Rivalry and the spirit behind it; the judges; the administration; and our parents, who put up with late nights and long hours. A very special thank you goes to our class advisor, Mr. Karl De Masi, whose spirit and determination helped us do things we never deemed possible. Congratulations to the Seniors, whose dramatic turnaround this year will hopefully inspire other classes to never give up, even when it seems hopeless. They've taught us something very special, because they are something very special. We will miss them next year and we wish them the best in whatever they do. Rock Rivalry 101 AMISS ABOARD THE MISS. The hectic pace ... the nervous energy ... the frantic anticipation of winning are all over. The hertofore hidden talents of classmates have shone forth. The results were not to our liking, but it wps our fault. We know that next year we will have to work harder, pull together sooner, and share the responsibilities equally. Rock Rivalry 103 When we first took the stage as freshmen, we did not expect to have an outstanding entrance. A Different Slant on Love” was accepted as typically freshmen. We expected more the next year, but learneu in ‘‘A Bang of a Reunion that the Class of 1987 had not yet begun to mature as a class. As juniors in the 50th Rock Rivalry, everyone was anxious to see what we could deliver. “On A Wish and a Prayer” disappointed many people. As Seniors, the Class of 1987, STARTLED everyone, including ourselves. Not only did we tie for first in Entrance with “Robbin Robin, but we won the cup with 89V points. The class had done what many said was impossible. The “losers” were winners! The class that was a joke had set a Friday morning record with 38 points and beat the competition by 23 and 30‘A points. We would like to thank Ed Hess, whose professionalism was a key ingredient. We must also thank Bridget Caffrey, whose dedication and spirit throughout our four years was an inspiration to us all. It is not often when a class has four class advisors during its years at East Rockaway High School. It is even less often that four people can affect the lives of so many in such a special way. When we first started as Freshmen, Miss Martine Mischuck became our first advisor. It did not take long for a special bond to form between our class and our new advisor. She showed us Canada, and also showed us love. The next year she returned under a new name, Mrs. Curto. Once again, she was there for us and helped us grow. When she left the following year, we lost a very special part of us. Our junior year saw the addition of Mrs. Cap-pellino to our family. Once again, we were lucky to have such a special woman as an advisor. She helped make our prom, Heaven, something to cherish for the rest of our lives. When she had to step down because of her new child we were sad to lose yet another advisor, but we knew she would still be here for us. As seniors we saw something we had never seen before, two advisors at once. To say that Mrs. Brock and Mrs. Warren adapted to the situation well would be an understatement. After we became closer with them, it was as if they were always with us. “Millie and Shirley” reached our hearts and showed us that we didn’t have to settle for anything less than the best. They, just as the others, will always be “one of us.” To all of our advisors, we thank you with all of our hearts. Without your love and dedication, our years would not have been as special as they were.
