In life there is a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to celebrate. This year, we the members of the Class of Nineteen Hundred and Eighty-Six, revel in the fact that our senior year coincides with the Fiftieth Anniversary of our school. Since the school's beginning in 1936, pride radiated from the small student body emerging from the shadow of another district. The school, during the past fifty years, came into its own, as each of us has come into our own and established our own uniq identities. Dr. Semergieff has given us a strong and vivacious model. She has also bestowed upon us a positive feeling that this is not the only golden year of our lives. She has demanded respect and has received it. Mr. Gerald Honig — Assistant Principal Our revered disciplinarian possesses the sagacity to listen to us and the fairness to cater to our needs. From sportscaster to enforcement officer to director of the National Honor Society to math genius, Mr. Honig is our golden ray. Mr. Edward Crowley — Assistant Principal Even his golden smile cannot hide his work of enforcing the school laws to the fledglings. His luminescent wisdom and eagerness to help have made him a valuable part of this institution. 19 Mr. Robert Parry Mr. Robert Parry, Superintendent of Schools We know Mr. Parry tackles all the difficult challenges of the district making them just another aureate endeavor. He reminds us to take pride in our work and that another golden day is just a sunrise away. The Board Of Education For fifty years the Board has reigned supreme over the district like a strict parent with a young child. This group of diligent individuals has handed down its commandments for our benefit. Our golden interests have always been their first priority. BOARD OF EDUCATION Parent-Teacher Association Although they are small in number, the PTA possesses a great attitude. Their goal is to help the student body and the school in any way they can. This group is indeed altruistic in providing scholarships and a golden Rock Rivalry journal for this special year. President of The P.T.A. With a brave heart he seeks out and helps those to golden opportunities which they may not find elsewhere. SHIRLEY WARREN THE CULINARY STAFF The Culinary Staff The cafeteria has never been run so well by such a lovely staff. The food is certainly not fifty years old, and neither is the service. Our hunger is given respite after we take part in one of their golden delights. The Custodial Staff As we venture into our daytime and nighttime extra-curricular and scholastic activities, we find the reason why the school has lasted fifty years. The day and evening crews help keep E.R.H.S. in a golden condition. THE CUSTODIAL STAFF x % 42 The National Honor Society is a select organization whose membership is limited to those students who pass the criteria of Character, Leadership, Service, and Scholarship. This Golden y ear, the Society has taken an active part in the school community by choosing officers and by tutoring underclassmen. With the help of its advisor, Mr. Gerald Honig, the members of the National Honor Society are able to use their talents in order to help others. ADVISOR M R. With help from Norma Atter and Marion Abramson, the Juniors and Seniors in SPO are highly respected for their volunteer work. MATHLETES Take this talented group of students, add Mrs. Ellen Kacerow to advise, and the sum is a success. Our Mathletes earn their name by using their superior mathematical ability to exercise their brains to solve any problems. GIFTED AND TALENTED The aureate intelligentsia of East Rockaway High School work in this group. Besides weekly meetings to enrich academic aspects, the group also pursues cultural endeavors to ballets, plays, operas, and symphonies, as well as to natural and scientific sites. The very erudite Mrs. Jean Clark advises the program through its extraordinary pursuits. The Friends Program, led by Mrs. Ste-ingart, is beneficial for our own high school students, as well as for the little brothers and sisters. The big brothers and sisters help kids to grow u p and deal with the problems that usually accompany this process. This organization is one of the best examples of community work ever. It was the occasion of the Fiftieth Anniversary Celebration of Rock Rivalry. People came from literally thousands of miles to participate in and to witness this wonderful weekend. For three hours, the audience sat and enjoyed a representative sampling of each of the five decades of Rock Rivalry. For the 1930's, we saw graduates of the Class of 1939 do cartwheels and songs and dances. They were truly superb. The Forties gave us a Sentimental Journey medley which was wonderfully nostalgic. The Fifties gave us a segment of their 1954 Entrance, Mountain Music. To see Board member Mrs. Elaine Boll belt out You Can't Get a Man With a Gun and to see Mr. Richard Meagher as a hillbilly preacher was a sight to behold! The Sixties overwhelmed us, especially with their Rockettes — precision kick line and their fantastic singing and dancing. The Seventies gave us three different views of what Rock Rivalry was all about then. The program ended with the Seniors giving a condensed version of this year's winning Entrance A Horror-ible Mix-Up? and three separate finales. To see our Alumni, our Board members, our teachers, our parents, our neighbors and friends — this was truly something to behold! Hard Rock Rivalry Our first Rock Rivalry left a lasting impression on us. We had some defeats and some victories; we made some mistakes and learned from them. When it was all over, we finished in third place, a great debut for a Freshman class. For everything they have done to make our first Rock Rivalry special, we thank: Mr. Martin Severino, without whom Rock Rivalry just wouldn't be Rock Rivalry; the administration and Board of Education; the judges; our chairpersons; and all the classes, but especially the juniors, our beloved sister class, who have taught us some invaluable lessons about winning and losing. Most of all, we'd like to thank our class advisor. Miss Carolyn VerPault, for her guidance, support, and help in making Rock Rivalry the memorable and enjoyable experience it was for us. In the beginning, we were very disorganized and couldn't even decide on a theme! But then we came up with a truly original idea and made A Cereal Serial take second place. A Cereal Serial 115 THE JUNIORS OF ’87 present. . . On a Wish and a Prayer After our third Rock Rivalry we had much to reflect upon. Although we did not accomplish what we set out to do, we took our loss in stride. Rock Rivalry takes a great deal of time and effort for six weeks or so, but is still only a competition. One of its most important factors is having fun. If there is no fun, a main purpose of Rock Rivalry is lost. From our three years of participation, we have also learned sportsmanship. Without sportsmanship among all the classes, and within our own class as well. Rock Rivalry could become less the enjoyable and learning experience it should be, and more of a hassle. If all classes were a bit more like friends and a bit less like rivals, this would be a plus for the students involved, as well as for Rock Rivalry as a whole. In this spirit of friendship, we would like to wish all next year's classes luck, and we hope they do not lose sight of the true purpose of Rock Rivalry. We would like to thank all the classes for making this, the 50th Rock Rivalry, a very memorable one.
