• if! - - • • 11 of us are at one time or another subject to a world of fantasy derived from the strangest and most far-off recesses of the mind. As young children, we seem to use our imagination constantly. Our young minds distort reality, sometimes, to explain what we cannot yet put into words, and we manipulate reality when we do not quite like what it tells us. As we get older, we begin to find our identity; we learn more about the world; confidence sets in. O Though we may still occasionally fantasize, it is no longer as imperative to do so, and we try to cope with reality. However, with knowledge and responsibility comes pressure. At times we may find ourselves like Alice, trapped on the other side of the looking glass, looking for answers to the never-ending questions of life. This yearbook is an attempt to illustrate the above through East Rockaway High School, the place that we have come to associate with both reality and fantasy. 5 t-Z Dear Prince, There is often a fine line between fantasy and reality, a boundary many of Us find difficult to deal with. Your guidance and support have enabled us to cope with this line. None of our goals were ever too far-reaching, no idea too whimsical, and no problem unconquerable. The faith and confidence you’ve shown in us has made our successes possible. None of it would have been possible without you. Above all you have always been our friend. As with most friends, we’ve shared many experiences, from the conventional to the bizarre. In September of 1981 no one could have foreseen these events. They were only a fantasy which grew into reality. This book is a collection of memories that we will cherish always. Since you are such an important figure in these memories, we dedicate this book to you, in hopes it will reflect our sincere gratitude and affection. With much love and thanks, The Class of '85 8 CANDIDS • CANDIDS • 9 10 • THE PROM • The Junior-Senior Prom was a night when we were able to live out our fantasies. The gowns, the tuxedos, the limousines, the ambiance — these are just some of the images we remember. We would like to extend a big “Thank You” to all those who worked so hard to make “Just You and I” a night we will long remember, a night that surpassed reality and made dreams come true. Maiden Principal Robert Par Assistant Principal Edward Crowley Assistant Principal Gerald Honig June, 1985 Dear Graduates, The Class of 1985 leaves East Rockaway High School a rich collection of pleasant memories. While many of these memories relate to individual students and their maturing from 7th graders to seniors, other memories relate to the class as a group. Your class has established a new tradition for other classes to follow. The highly successful Halloween Parties for the young children of East Rockaway was a model of community service. The Rock Rivalry Entrances of your Sophomore and Junior years brought that entertainment form to the highest level I have witnessed at East Rockaway High School. Your class demonstrated the ability to pull together and produce quality work on the stage. The richest memories you leave behind are those of individual students, maturing into responsible, caring young adults as your teachers and parents take a measure of pride for their contributions to your development. As you sign each other's yearbooks, make note of the positive contributions each student has made to the class. Comment on the successes — academic, athletic, musical, journalistic — that person has had some share in creating. You are always welcome to return to East Rockaway High School as you go forward with your lives. Your teachers have invested much of themselves in your development and they look forward to sharing in your success and happiness. The Class of 1985 lakes with them our very best wishes. Sincerely, Robert Parry 4 Principal ' We, the young, often find ourselves trapped in the darkness of too much fantasy. We run from dead end to dead end, through a maze of false-truths, blindly seeking light only to find tricks and illusions. We often think of teachers as part of this maze, giving long laborious piles of work, all giving us all a terrible picture of a dark mysterious tunnel ... lined with horrible, horrible books. We do not always realize, though, that these teachers are, in reality, our windows to the world. They are the sages, the philosophers, and perhaps they can even be considered prophets foretelling the future of the world to come — a world slowly slipping into our hands. All lands, be they trite or fantastic, must have some sort of structure — guardians to watch over the weak and helpless and save them from the ignorance and danger of anarchy. This land, which we all consider our own for the six years we are here, has its own court of rulers. They are the ideal, storybook kind that rule not only with firmness, but also with wisdom — wisdom to hear their subjects and deal with their needs. Even the challenge of rebellion cannot break their magical spell which holds together the growing minds of this great land! THE BOARD OF EDUCATION As the powers that be, the Board of Education serves as a deity to all in this abundant land. They decide what fruits of which trees of knowledge we may eat from and they are, of course, the providers of all that is good. The vast treasures sacrificed to them are always bestowed in an efficient manner. Seated: C. Burris. E. Boll. |. Brezenoff. Standing: M. Maiden. J. Van Houten. R. Meagher. MR. MICHAEL MAIDEN Superintendent of Schools The behind the scenes wizardry of our superintendent does not lend to familiarity with the students. Ordinarily that is. Along with mastering the section of the East Rockaway Spell Book marked Superintendent’s Duties,” Mr. Merlin has always been a friendly face accompanied by a cheerful incantation or two. His taking time from a busy schedule to participate in the district musicals is an example of his sincere interest and concern. MR. ROBERT JACOBY Director of Special Education The good Prince Jacoby rides throughout the land upon his great white horse named Hope, seeking out those requiring a very special education in our wonderful land of learning. He rides to all three provinces with the king’s blessing and protection, giving help to all those needing it as well as those needing to give it. Although without arcane powers he seems to cast a spell equaling, at times the Wizard himself. Seated: Mrs. Mihalich, Mrs. Caccavo. Standing: Mrs. Walker, Mrs. Goodspeed. Mrs. Megher MR. ROBERT PARRY Principal A good king serves as a constant reminder of reality who often keeps our feet on the ground. Mr. Parry has spent the last four years making sure we can deal with reality and at the same time helping us realize our dreams. A good king also helps his subjects to take pride in their land. Mr. Parry has shown us that academic excellence is well within our grasp and that pride in ourselves and our work can only lead to the benefit of the entire school. As the King of the court, we thank you. May you rule long and justly! MR. GERALD HONIG Assistant Principal As Commander-in-Chief of enforcement and overlord of the King’s dungeons. General Honig, has acquired great respect. And although openly cultivating the ancient National Honor Society into a personal faction, he is still keeping the student body from the perils of chaos. MR. EDWARD CROWLEY Assistant Principal In every court, there is needed a jester — a means of release for the King. An entertainment for our monarch in times of stress, not in the ordinary way. He seems also to take up part of the yoke for the King, regarding the youngest members of the kingdom. He acts as an assistant for, although a clown and merrymaker of the utmost skill, there is behind that painted smile, wisdom to deal with even the most difficult of tasks. THE P.T.A. Great though the gods may be, the inhabitants of this world sometimes require assistance even closer to their own level — people who see them more often. Thus we have the P.T.A., a group of noble individuals combined for the good of the students and better relations with the philosophers under the King. This worthy group provides scholarships, information and, as a special service, a journal for the Annual Competition of the Upperfactions. The emergence of new organizations in the past few years and the steady increase in effectiveness of already existing ones shows that this fanciful notion is diminishing . .. r j 7 ' kitum V Front: M. The weeks that made up Rock Rivalry consisted of hard work, strenuous cooperation, and not as much sleep as would have liked. We were still able to salvage some fun, and, in the end, pull off a third place. This was an “experimental” year, one in which we were expected to make mistakes, but we learned from them, and we hope to utilize that knowledge to the fullest in the years to come. We have many people to thank for a wonderful time this year: Mr. Severino; the judges; the administration; our chairpersons and, most of all, Mrs. McGrath, our class advisor. In conclusion, we would like to wish the Seniors good fortune in everything they do We also wish the Sophomores good luck ir future endeavors. It has again helped us to meet new friends and perfect or even find our “hidden” talents. One of the most important lessons our class learned this year was the true meaning of sportsmanship, something Rock Rivalry is all about. Although we did not do as well as we would have liked, we learned to walk proud. This is a lesson we would hope all Rock Rivalry classes to learn. We would like to thank the rest of the classes for everything they have done ESPECIALLY the Seniors, who have taught and shared so much with us. We wish them all much luck, success, and happiness in everything they do. We'll never forget you. We hope you are with us in spirit, at least, next year, when, undaunted, we go for the GOLD!!! A Cans cf a Reunion co QC o ©ime Upon a ©nce Although we did not win the cup, we achieved a personal victory this year, We astonished our schoolmates, the faculty, and perhaps even the community, by creating something wonderful from the theme of fairy tales. This couldn't have been done without some very special people: Cindy Rubin, our dedicated class advisor: overall chairpersons Debbie Klinger and Joanne Goodspeed; and our entrance chairpersons Laura Mosscrop and Bud Shamroth. The big night came. We went on and it seemed to “click. We were totally pleased with what we had done. Midnight approached. The decision was announced. We had firmly captured second place, while tying for a first in entrance. We held our heads high while congratulating the Seniors because we had given it our all. We wish the Seniors the same success in all they do in the future. Although we lost, we are not defeated. We will go on next year, and try our hardest in hopes of gaining a similar but new prize — the Rock Rivalry 50th Anniversary' Golden Cup! C5 I31BIBII2 IBIIIII! • on 2 u c oc CO cc O 2 w CO o 111 God We Trust? The wait that the world had to endure was Iona. Finally, it came — 1982. And it was worth it. Finally, the class that would break all the barriers and begin the War Against the Rut had come. The Class of '85 had made its Rock Rivalry debut. Making the South Seas gleam was not as easy as we thought, out everyone just gritted his teeth and gave it his best shot. The competition was soon to change. Shakespeare? they exclaimed in our Sophomore year, Bows? What? No love story? It had begun. That Sophomore Entrance got a first place vote and a great deal of respect for the Class of '85. Dare to Be Different was the permanent scratching on the cup for our Junior year. Fantasy vs. Reality? What kind of theme is that? I thought they were only supposed to make us laugh. The hie Red and Black machine merely laughed as it accepted the cud with style and ease. Drama?” Our Senior year had come. They’re only supposed to sing and dance! What are they doing? We knew what we were doing all along. We still do, now that our four years are completed — partly in thanks to the growth and maturity which Rock Rival™ has unlocked from our hearts. The Big RR has always been a learning experience for us and should be for all classes in years to come. Two cups stand as proof that the Class of ’85 has indeed won the War Against the Rock Rivalry Rut!!! entrance Refreshment Construction General Art Interpretation Table Tennis Volleyball: Basketball Penalties • ROCK RIVALRY WEEKEND 85 • 123 UNDERCLASS What would we ever do without underclassmen? Who would the Seniors pick on and bully for their last year in high school? Boy! I didn't act like that when I was his age! Since when do Freshmen talk to Seniors like that? They should have more respect! The things you put up with and endure from older kids! The guff that you are forced to take is so incredible that we remember it enough to devote an entire section of this book just to you. This is to show that younger members of our schools and society deserve to have their respect returned while they are still in their underclassman years — probably the best vears of vour life. A representation of the threshold into a brave new world. Crazy classes, lazy lunch, and more free periods than you shake a stick at. It seems like one big vacation sometimes — yet when one gets down to the truth, it still represents a big challenge to us, though this challenge is not always material. As the first twelve years of our education approaches its close, some will look forward to the freedom and space of the independent world. Some will feel something very different... Suddenly, our world seems frighteningly small. Like those who wait for Godot, we seem to be commanded to hesitation by that strange feeling one always experiences when parting with a dear friend — an unexplainable phenomenon, though we all know it no matter what our age. However, a big bad wolf, in guise of long hours and hard work was lurking in the shadows of the Rock Room. Yet through a sense of creative achievement, the wolf was mysteriously metamorphasized into a feeling of sincere satisfaction. Along the path there have been many people who have enabled us to continue while lightening our load. Assistant Editor Bob McHale's literary expertise has aligned our wayward notions into coherent verse. Vinnie Spinnato has contributed concern and effort along the way. To our art staff: Paul, Tim, Don, and Rich, who on a moments notice expressed their fantasies in enchanting masterpieces, we owe a great debt. To Chris Formont whose undying efforts have kept his shutter speed well above a thousand, we thank and applaud his work. The financial success of this book might have been a nightmare without Robyn's and Ralph's business savy. They have helped this year's Rock be affordable to all. Not many people would have sacrificed as much time on such short notice and with so little reward as did Vicky Califano. We should also thank Tom, Brendan, and Paul, our Rock Aides, who have on many occasions picked up the sticks we carelessly left behind. Without Carol Studios photographic endeavors we couldn't have made it quite as far along the path as we did. Mr. Jim Spelman and Mirror Photographer's timeley assistance have helped us meet many deadlines. Frank McWilliams' patience, support, and good spirits have always been appreciated as we toiled in the Rock Room. To the people at Publishing, Renate Jackson and Tricia Jordan in particular, we admire you for putting up with our frequent mistakes. And to Phil St. Pierre, who often told us you can do anything you want, we owe many thanks. A great deal of the pictures and thoughts collected in this book are a result of Mr. Mrs. Principato's sharing in our high school years, without them this book would not hold so much special meaning. But the pot of gold at the end of our rainbow goes to Martin Severino. Sev had guided us along our path and kept us from straying too far from this path that would lead us to our final destination. (Pg. 224) To all these people we extend our sincere appreciation and gratitude, and we hope that our fantasy becomes reality to all those who leaf through our collection of high school dreams and memories.
