Motion ond continuity hove filled our school rime ond rime again. This was evident os we watched our stunt men (and women) ploying sports, our entertainers creating roles on our own stage, our screen writers” working hard ro produce the Gull and rhe Rock, ond our own Academy of Arts and Sciences helping ro improve our school’s reputation. For four years this compilation of stills, short subjects, features, rear jerkers, love stories, adventures, dramas, and comedies — together wirh a cast of hundreds — has been in-the-making in our little studio called East Rockaway High School. Dear Seniors, A school con determine how well it has prepared its students only by evaluating the quality of life enjoyed by its graduates in the years offer graduation. As this is usually on impossible task, many people use more tangible evidence to evaluate our graduating classes The range and quality of college acceptances, the scholarships won, the job placements achieved ore several objective standards by which our society otrempts to judge a school's success. Teochers often find that a graduating class develops a group personality during its years in a school. Your class appears to have established itself as a group small in number, large in heart, often fighting adversity and still determined to succeed. As you enter the worlds of college ond employment, I osk that you carry with you memories of a school whose teachers hove offered you o quoliry education and the personal core and attention which is possible in a smoll school. Your ability to construct for yourself a rich, full life beyond success in a job or career will be your greatest gift to this school and to your teachers. I urge you to strive for excellence in all you do while maintaining a rich level of peace, love and happiness in your life. Commit yourself to improving the quality of life in our society by enriching the existence of those with whom you live. Return to Eost Rockaway High School ond shore with us your successes in the coming years. Sincerely, Robert Parry GUIDANCE MR. JOSEPH KUSEL Broken arm still o mystery to us oil ... It can be a unifying force or o dividing one. It con help you to moke new pals, and perhaps cause you to drift opart from old friendships. Either way, Rock Rivalry is definitely a worthwhile experience. This year's Rock Rivalry was truly o memorable one; maybe even more so because the Seniors lost. The Class of '83 was one of only o few classes in forty-seven years of competition to complete four years of hard work and never come out with the cup. Sure, it was a disappointment. But more importantly, it has helped us to grow together os o class. Through Rock Rivalry we were able to learn about each other in o way that would not hove been possible in o normal school situation. So we never got the cup . .. we still hove our memories. AND, os someone (Neol) once said, We hove nothing to be ashamed of. !!! 84 AN OPEN LETTER TO THE 1983 SENIORS Please allow me a few minutes to say how much I truly admire you both individually and as a doss. First, I would like to point something out that you may not be aware of. The year many of you were born there was a German measles epidemic. German measles has a devastating effect on the unborn fetus. So, it is probably no mere coincidence that your class size is small in number, a mere 104 students. You are, in fact, all the lucky ones to have been born healthy. Luck has not always been on your side, however. Perhaps if you hod 150 students, as most of the other classes, you may have had a few more gifted individuals to choose from. But fate forced you to compere at o distinct disadvantage against classes one-third larger than yours. Some have compared it to a relay race. All the other reams had four runners bur your team only had three runners. But you gave it your all and ran against those odds for four years. Sometimes you won and sometimes you lost, bur the important thing is that you ran. Unlike some sports where the players with a disadvantage are given points as a handicap, no one gave you points for your disadvantage. As if that weren't bad enough, many of your dossmares dropped out of Rock Rivalry after the first and second year because they got tired of losing. That is understandable because everyone loves to be on a winning team. Bur some of you didn't quit! I admire you. While other classes were having tryouts for Entrance, your doss was begging for participants. Until Mr. Pollock and Mrs. Brock came along, you hod been begging teachers to be your class advisor as well. I admire them too for working so hard with you and believing in you. But most of all, I admire you. It takes courage to believe in yourselves when the odds weigh so heavily against you, and to fight an uphill battle. It would have been easier to walk away and quit and say this isn't fair. Through it all I saw something beautiful happen with your class. By necessity you opened your orms and accepted anyone who would come aboard. There was a place for everyone. You were a special team that cared for each other and supported each other at any cost. In the girls basketball games, when points mattered more than anything else you played every player at some point, even those who never played basketball before in their lives. Being the underdogs you knew how it would hurt not to be played. It rook courage not to just go for the points and blindly strive to win the cup. But you cared! In Entrance, the stage was full with students dancing the very complicated steps of your beautiful opening dance. As long as they were willing to come to practice, no one was turned away because they couldn't dance. Thar word did not exist for you. Everyone could do it if they fried. Students who never before played instruments learned to play by memory the music needed in Entrance. Remember when you hummed your way through Entrance in the first year and played Free Bird in your finale because it was the only song you could play well. You overcome that. Everyone was needed and important and they knew it. I could cite many more incidents, but you know them better than I. Through if all you became closer as a class and bolstered each other. You believed in each other, inspired . each other and never quit. Bur most of all, as I see it, you cored about each other at any cost. Remember, Success is failure turned inside out. You may hove lost points, for whatever reasons the judges have, and you may have lost the cup which is only silver. But you won something far more valuable than gold and I am proud of you — as all of us parents are. Thank you for whof you taught us and don't ever change the wav vou are. 85 The FCCSH ©f se ipresent... Rock Rivalry. It's rhe oldest tradition in ERH5. Oh sure we oil heard Sev speak of the countless hours we would hove to put in for o successful yearbook, but none of us reolly believed him. HEY big guy, you were right. The book rhor you ore looking or wos almost non-existent. You see it rook us, me especially, until December to realize rhor the yearbook wos hard work. By then we were three months behind ond one hundred poges in the hole. Somehow we were able to WING IT ond dig ourselves out. I'll never truly understand how. First, I'd like to rhonk my assistant Ed. Stuorr Komen. I think one of the things rhor mode the book so successful was our contrasting opinions on everything. Thonx for coming through under pressure. There were many others on the night crew that were willing to give up Friday nights ond Christmas vocation for the Rock. Thonks to: Alice for Keyboards, Mavis ond Heide for oil night art work, Buck, for five hours of developing in one night, J.B. for the mirror ond more. Anne for babes ond ods, Liso ond Mio for oil rhor dor counting, Lindo for the ods ond odds ond ends lit work; HXP, for brainstorms ond Brockie for brainstorming ond ossr. keyboarding. Without your extra efforts this book would hove never been. To Mr. Fronk McWilliams ond the whole night crew I would like to extend my appreciation for all of your patience, understanding; ond most of oil, your friendship. Thonks also must go to Mr. Severino our advisor ond Mr. Phil Sr. Pierre, our Taylor representative. Thonk you for reaching us the ropes ond correcting our few mistakes. Also thonks to Mr. McAnullo for putting up with oil the disorganization we created in the Gull Rock Room. A final thanks must go to the class of '63. If you feel that the book hos token our post experiences, captured them ond mode them lasting memories, then I shall consider it a success. Your never ending support will always be appreciated, whether it was for the layout questions that you answered over the phone, or for those short-notice visits you had to pay on us to set our minds straight and calm us down. In many ways, Mr. Phil, we couldn't have done it without ya. Thanks for all!! With much love and appreciation, Dear Carol Studios, At the beginning of the year, we didn't realize just how many pictures were needed to go into a yearbook. Of course, it didn't take long for us to find out. Your services in helping us to get these pictures into final form were indispensable. We would like to thank all of the women who helped us to cope with our problems upon each visit. Also, special thanks goes to Bob for his excellent work on our cover and Senior section.
