Text from Pages 1 - 232 of the 1982 volume:

V.J Co OD 00 to toro In an age said to be sorely lacking in heroes, we, the members of The Class of Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Two, must dissent from that opinion. Heroes — those esteemed for certain qualities that transcend the bounds of mediocrity — are, on the contrary, surrounding us both in our own world and in the realm of fiction. Within the following pages, there is a merging of the real and the legendary. As Seniors, it is we who are both the heroes of this book and its villains. This is an annual which recognizes the special traits required for the various phases of our school life in a negative as well as a positive sense. Despite first glance, the challenges the Superhero must face in his own domain are not always totally dissimilar to our own situation. Just as the intrepid must face challenges that tax the sum total of their ability, those whom this book centers around must face the Confrontations of sports, must appear In the Limelight, and it is our Legions of Champions who must combat the ever-present forces of apathy and lethargy. That is why it can truly be said that this age is not lacking heroes. The world is filled with them; some are closer than you might previously have thought. p. 18 VILLAINS IN THE LIMELIGHT THE CONFRONTATIONS LEGIONS OF CHAMPIONS p lie SIDEKICKS m p. 136 HEROES 5 Ifi Why must you die And I to wander on. Is that the way it is with friends?' | — Gilgamesh Danny Uhl (July 30,1964-January 14,1981) He had a thousand ideas. You might have known his name. He lived alone with his vision, not looking for fortune or fame. The first thing that comes to mind when we remember Danny Uhl is his fine ability to be himself. He always felt that being happy with himself was more important than being accepted by others. To his friends, he was always one on whom you could depend. I guess you can say that he had no doubts or fears. Some remember Danny as a very unique individual. Danny was, at times, a rather shy person, but he would always put his crazy sense of humor to work, and that shyness would simply vanish. In times of trouble, he was always a very courageous person, always a real fighter. Those who were very close to Danny were extremely fortunate. He always had a love for the outside world, for he appreciated his surroundings and didn't want to see anyone tampering with our environment. There were many things that he objected to; if he thought he was right he would always hold his ground. He just wanted to say what he thought. But there remains something he never told us, and all hopes of knowing it died when he went away. If only he could've been with us, there is no telling what he might have said. — Andrew J wish my life was a non-stop Hollywood movie show, a fantasy world of celluloid villains and heroes. Because celluloid heroes never feel any pain. And celluloid heroes never really die. — Ray D. Just as in real life, our true heroes are precious and few, so are the times we spent in high school making friends, giving of ourselves, and learning. When we say learning we don't mean classroom learning only — we mean the learning experience that came with everything we did, whether it was Rock Rivalry, cheering for our team, working on a fund raiser, or sharing that special moment with that special someone — counselor, teacher, friend, parent — for these moments are precious and few. 10 Dear Mrs. Palmeri and Miss Newell, Our high school years have come to a close; we have found our time to say good-bye. Words alone cannot express what the past four years have meant to us, and what you have helped to make them. Your special friendship has made these years more memorable and full of happiness. Your warm smiles shone through at our darkest moments and helped to make things bright again. You've taught us to respect ourselves as well as one another. But most of all, you've allowed us to grow, grow to our fullest potential, settling for nothing less than the best. Together we've faced the challenges, but now we must face them on our own. For now is the time to shed the blanket of security East Rockaway has given us. As we tuck away the memories of our high school years, you shall hold a precious place. For you, in our eyes, are heroes. We Love You! The Class of '82 11 . . Blackbird singing in the dead of night Take these sunken eyes and learn to see All your life You were only waiting for this moment to be free — Lennon and McCartney 13 . . Love when you can Cry when you have to. Be who you must. That’s a part of the plan Dan Fogelberg I walk the road of life. Among the strong. Among the weak. And I ask them for the shortcut. To the answers that I seek. But it seems nobody understands What is and what will be. Oh, the questions of my childhood Weave a web of mystery. — Livgren, Walsh 15 Behind every diabolic endeavor there is a hidden Brain pulling the strings, cleverly concealed from the long arm of the law. As the foremost educator in our community. Dr. Louis could be likened to the Brains behind the district's undertakings. In another respect, the parallel can be drawn even further since the Superintendent's job is done largely behind the scenes. Here, however, all similarity between the two ceases. In the administration of the district. Dr. Louis has shown himself to be very capable and should be extended all the credit he deserves for a job well done. DR. WILLIAM K. LOUIS A group of people, like villainous mothers and fathers who make you eat your spinach and give you a curfew that never seems to be late enough, make up the Board of Education. The ringleader of this group, also a second mother to our class, is Mrs. Rosemarie Brande. Working diligently to keep the school in order, the board is a big part of the activities of our high school lives. BOARD OF EDUCATION The Parent-Teacher Association is comprised of a group of concerned parents who endeavor to make the students' lot a more pleasant one. Such activities as the funding of the Junior Class trip, the publication of the Rock Rivalry journal, and the presentation of the scholarship awards are among the activities which most directly affect the student body. For the time and effort which these caring individuals put into these activities, we say thank you. 20 PARENT-TEACHERS ASSOCIATION In his first year as our principal, Mr. Parry has been instrumental in affecting various changes around our school. While these actions have, at times, given him the reputation of being a bit of a villain, they have always had the long-range interests of the school and its students in mind. For the many challenges the job of principal will have in the coming years, we wish him the best of luck. MR. ROBERT PARRY - PRINCIPAL MR. EDWARD CROWLEY - ASST. PRINCIPAL The position of assistant principal is a difficult one which deals with both administrative and curricular difficulties. Unfortunately, this means that Mr. Crowley's contact with the students is somewhat limited. Even so, he still finds time to share with the students who request his advice or assistance. We are grateful to him for the great job he has done as well as for his eagerness to help. As dean of this institution, Mr. Malone's responsibilities are such that he has the most direct contact with the student body. Although many of the scholars with whom he must deal might not realize it, our dean is looked upon as a personable and helpful individual. In his first year in this difficult post he has met its challenges admirably and fairly. To our disciplinarian we also wish much success for the coming years. MR. MARTIN MALONE - DEAN OF 21 STUDENTS EAST Public Schools ROCKAWAY Dear Seniors, The Class of 1982 created for itself a reputation among the staff and in the community as a group of students academically successful and socially productive. This reputation as a class of some excellence is no small accomplishment in a time when it is more frequent to hear criticism of youth than to hear praise of their accomplishments. As you move on to the worlds of higher education and employment opportunities, 1 trust you will carry with you a certain pride in the academic and extracurricular programs which East Rockaway High School offered you. If your education to date has been successful, not only have vou gained some mastery in the basic skills areas but you have also developed a desire to reach for success beyond your immediate grasp. You have learned to commit yourself to developing your talents and sharing your abilities in order to improve society. 1 wish each graduate the level of energy, dedication and stamina which your class d its Rock Rivalry campaigns of the last few years. (J o nstrated in Your commitment to individual excellence and personal success, which maintaining a high level of peace and happiness in your life, is your responsibility as a graduate. Your determination to improve the community and our society in these times of selfishness and disorder will be your legacy to the school. Sincere! ART MRS. In the blackness of night, a man in a black cape stood alone, except for a young girl who was set just a few feet from him. With a roguish smile, he glanced at the girl's solemn face. She was unable to move, unable to speak, her hand just inches from the keys. In the silence, he looked about, anxiously awaiting a sound like a train whistle he knew was soon to be approaching from the west. The girl, too, awaited this moment. . . with fear. In the distance, a small round light appeared and a sound was faintly heard, a perfect B-flat. Her heart thudded; it was here at last, and the Christmas Concert had begun. Mr. Miller stood at the end of the aisle, watching the candlelight procession and listening to the voices enter one by one. After the entire chorus had arrived at the stage, the pianist raised her hands and struck the first combination of keys. The concert was underway. We, the Class of '82, a largely musical class, would like to extend our sincere thanks to and admiration for Mr. Edward Miller, Mrs. Sylvia Abraham, and Mr. John Pellicane, whose constant dedication and devotion have so endlessly made music a large part of our high school years. THE ROHR OF THE GREASEPAINT Truly unique in concept this year's musical, The Roar of the Greasepaint, The Smell of the Crowd provided many pleasant surprises for those who attended. The culmination of several weeks worth of hard work was an exceptional performance by the cast members. By follwing the adventures of Sir, Cocky, and Kid, the struggle of the have nots , exploited by the haves , is enjoyably explained in song and comedy. In the lead roles were juniors Darryl DeFina and Joe Blassberg, and senior Mary Ruvolo. They and the other performers added the professionalism that made the show an artistic success. It must be realized, though, that the production would not have been possible without the guidance of Messrs. Robert Sheridan, Ciro Prudente, and Edward Miller. 52 THE SMELL OF THE CROWD The Cast Darryl DeFina Sir Joey Blassberg Cocky Mary Ruvolo Kid Mia Toner Girl Richard Connell Hobo Joseph Mihalich Vera Friscia, Alice McIntyre, Jeanie McTiernan, Tasneem Setaruddin, Bully Lisa Stern, Lydia Romano The Band Jenny Brezenoff, Rebecca Brezenoff, Barbara Hunt, Donald Levonius Directed by Mr. Robert Sheridan Mr. Ciro Prudente Urchins 53 THE DRAMATICS CLUB PRESENTS DEATH BY ADVANCEMENT directed by martin severino student director: greg tobin michael mccartney DRAMATICS CLUB PLAY With a twist at every curtain, this year's Dramatics Club presentation of the thriller Death by Arrangment is sure to tease, surprise and amuse everyone in the audience, even the most dedicated mystery lovers. V0TE9 ROCK RIV Xewwz - “SOUTH SHORE STORY” Frosh ’85 The Class of '85 has finally made its Rock Rivalry debut. We've hit everything this year with our usual pep, vim and vigor, and Rock Rivalry is no exception. The “super class came in with a bang. We expected a lot of hard work and we finally surely found it. Trying to make the South Seas gleam was not as easy as we thought, but every one just gritted his teeth and gave it his best shot. Everyone worked very hard on our show and put in their “song and dance to add to the highest scoring Freshman entrance in the fourty-six years of Rock Rivalry, based on 500 points cumulative. On the “other side of the school, we believe, also, that we made a very strong showing with our sports teams. In all sports we were very close, even when taking a fourth place, and even more important, the sportsmanship was always there. We also made respectable showings in both mural and stand this year. The time that went into both, especially our mural, surely paid off. Although we were surprised that both came in fourth, the workmanship and cooperation was the real prize. Our first year in Rock Rivalry has been a successful one, not only in the material sense. Other qualities such as sportsmanship, responsibility, and maturity have come within our reach. Working together has helped us to grasp the true meaning of these terms, which, of course, is the real purpose of Rock Rivalry. It has been wihin the six work-laden weeks that we have really become our massive working unit — the big, black and red machine. v 1982 7 entrance stand construction 2 stand decoration 2 art interpret 4 mural 2 table tennis 2 volleyball boys 2 volleyball girls 4 basketball boys 2 basketball girls 8 penalties Vi total 34% “HEIR FRANCE” A Sophs ’84 After weeks of hard work and undying dedication, the Class of 1984 embarked on a journey to a distant land. It was a first class flight on Heir France, to one of the most exciting and glorified nations in the world. The journey was a short one but certainly one rich in discovery, sportsmanship, and accomplishment. This year, like most, the Rock Rivalry experience proved to be an awesome one. The activity, seemingly at its best, served as a catalyst to the learning and discovering of talents that would have otherwise remained hidden. It gave all involved a sense of accomplishment and success, and showed how good competition, no matter how rigorous, can bring people together. Much of the Class of '84's success this year was due to the help of our sister class, the seniors. Their efforts proved to be irreplaceable and their friendship, love, and support, unsurpassed. Overall, Rock Rivalry '82 was a night to remember, a time to cherish, a chance to achieve Fame, and an opportunity to go on a voyage to success! For the Class of '84, this Rock Rivalry was only a stepping stone to achieving our ultimate goal — obtaining the cup! 1982 entrance 21 stand construction 4 stand general 4 mural 8 art interpret. 2 table tennis 6 volleyball boys 6 volleyball girls 6 basketball boys 6 basketball girls 2 penalties 0 total 65 69 Once again, as another Rock Rivalry has come and gone, we realize that it is time for us to reflect back on our experiences to see whether we really have benefited from them. But before we examine this any closer, it would seem appropriate to take a careful look at this phrase that has dominated some six weeks of our lives: What exactly is Rock Rivalry? Upon looking at these two words, an outsider could only imagine some form of competition, nothing more. But one has gone through it can tell you that there are many more factors involved. While the competitive spirit is always present, one of the lessons to be learned is how to come out of any game on either side, as a gracious winner, or as a loser who can still hold his head up high. This is one lesson the Junior class can say it has learned thoroughly. Except for some rare instances, we have always accepted the outcome, without any complaint. We truly do, and will, exhibit class. But the Juniors are not the only ones to learn. Rock Rivalry teaches all the classes. It is an educational experience, a sort of a testing ground to prepare you for any of life's challenges that you may encounter down the road. During these six weeks you develop some characteristics or qualities that will last you for years to come. This year's Junior class, the smallest class in the school, has gained much from this 46th annual Rock Rivalry. Not only have we learned proper sportsmanship; more importantly we have come together as a class. But we do realize that even if we don't win, we can still hold our heads up high with self-respect, knowing that we did our best and we tried harder than anybody else. At this point we would like to thank all the classes, and wish them good luck next year. A special good luck to this year's Freshmen, our sister class. Also, we would like to thank the Seniors for three memorable Rock Rivalry years. We will miss you all as our rivals, but mostly as our friends. And a final thank-you to Mr. Robert Parry, for seeing it our way and helping this wonderful tradition stay alive. 1982 entrance 14 stand construction 8 stand general 6 mural 4 art interpret 6 table tennis 4 volleyball boys 4 volleyball girls 2 basketball boys 4 basketball girls 4 penalties Vi total 552 3 71 “A MID-EVIL KNIGHT’S DREAM” The Class of '82's final excursion through the wonderful world of Rock Rivalry took place in an imaginary, yet real, land called Camelot. Starting its adventure as Freshmen on a pirate ship, it adjourned to Germany, crossed the golden sands of Arabia, and went on to Camelot. This mystical time and place was the setting of the Seniors' Entrance. What better place to tell our story than the land of Camelot, where dreams and reality overlap, and the fantasy of magic abounds? The play and its characters are symbolic of '82's struggles, joys, failures and successes throughout the four years. As a class, and as individuals, we all have our Black Knights, trying to pull our good fortune out from under us. But we also have our Merlins looking over our shoulder and stepping in when things look hopeless. We've encountered many dragons in our four years of Rock Rivalry and there were times when success seemed elusive. But the magic of Rock Rivalry always found us and brought us together so we could pull through as one. We all feel extremely fortunate that fate smiled upon us from the beginning and gave us luck, spirit, and psyche, all the essentials for Rock Rivalry success, but what made us the most fortunate of all is having each other. We are proud to have left our mark at ERHS, being the first class to gain five first place votes as both Juniors and Seniors. As the years go on, we'll think back on that one brief shining moment and remember that fleeting wisp of glory that made high school our Camelot. entrance......... stand construction stand general mural art interpretation table tennis volleyball boys volleyball girls basketball boys . basketball girls penalties total............ 76 77 SOFTBALL 1st Row: A Adamzyck, E. Not Thanksgiving, not Christmas, not basketball, but — you guessed it — Bowling. The major sport of the school is upon us. H. X. Pollock is all aglow on the center stage. Will it be playoffs for the fifteenth consecutive year? HXP is his usual cautiously optimistic self. Tne nucleus of our team will be our three returning varsity lettermen, MVP Bob Matthews, Paul Pisani, and Chris Cenzoprano. This is a luxury that HXP has not enjoyed in several years. Rounding out the Varsity should be Jim Chen, Jim Shaughnessy, Mike Sammon, Tim Kennedy, Jerry Castaldo, Ken Swinson, Bob McHale, John Fusco and HXP's usual surprises. This year, E.R s traditions have taken the road to the modern times and girls can, if they qualify, play for the school bowling teams. This should give HXP a few more pleasant surprises than he expected. 92 (1-r) J. Chen, A. Bell, K. Fanning, Coach Pollack, M. Sammon, R. McHale. 93 1982! ROCK SPOR TS TERMS J. Then by the time it's over, on a cold November Saturday, you wish you could do it all over again. It is high school football, and nothing gives greater highs or lower lows. You work hard all week, learning plays, executing them, and most of all — hitting. By the time Saturday comes, you are physically, emotionally, and mentally prepared. But somehow things don't always work out like they did in practice. Something may go wrong, and a once solid play turns into a grave mistake. Winning in all sports is great, but people quickly forget the victories and dwell on the losses. When a football game in high school is lost it affects more than the team or the school; it affects the players. When a game is won, the win stays with you until you line up against another opponent the next week, and the more they add up, the longer it stays with you. Pro Football is a job. You can get hired or fired. College is a training session to prepare yourself for the job. High school football is a feeling; it's as emotional as it is physical. When a player comes off the field with a win, satisfaction and pride numb the pain he has suffered during the game. But when he comes off the field with a loss, the pain is doubled. Inevitably the worst pain felt is when he finally realizes he's played his last high school football game. Vince Lombardi said it best. Football is many things, but mostly it is a game of passion. The Student Council is a very important aspect of our school. They represent the student population as a whole, allowing them to voice their opinions and stand up for their rights. Other tactics that are contributing factors in the success of this organization are based upon getting all students to participate in fund raising activities, attending monthly meetings, and showing their concern and support for their student body. Ms. Joan Faucher, the advisor to this group, has been an important asset. She has contributed her ideas, given guidance, and has always been there when help was needed. Student Council members are the good guys just as the heroes are in keeping law and order in tact. (L-R) 1st Row: J. Mihalich — Jr. President, B. Brezenoff — Council V.P. 2nd Row: P. New York and its professional theatre are the heroes of the Dramatics Club. Seeing and experiencing classics such as 'The Pirates of Penzance , Macbeth, and My Fair Lady, has held true to its main purpose, namely, to introduce students to live professional theatre and to make them aware of the cultural opportunities New York has to offer. The Dramatics Club draws quite a large membership each year; this year is no exception. Faithfully advised by Mr. Martin Severino, the club makes numerous trips into New York City to not only see great plays, but to experience things only a city as great as The Big Apple can provide. The Dramatics Club is much needed in our small community. It gives students a taste of the real world, and the many things it has to offer. Among high school memories. The Dramatics Club trips are some of the fondest alumni recall. emcees 1st Row: J. Blassberg — Treasurer, M. Ruvolo — President, Sev — Advisor. 2nd Row: M. Mansfield — Secretary, J. The Gull, appears in the halls of the school about every two weeks, highlighting not only E.R.H.S s heroes, but its villains, or negative aspects, as well. The Gull has soared above many of its neighboring high school papers to great accomplishments and has earned much respect due to hard work, journalistic talents, and the supervision, ethics, and high ideals of an excellent advisor. McAnulla's Musketeers are carefully selected from an eager group of young journalists and are ripened on-the-job. These rookies are given assignments and duties, just as are the more experienced Gull workers, accompanied by a word of advice. Many beginners enter the world of reporting in awe of how much work goes into the production of this 4-page wonder that has been the recipient of so many awards in its short glamorous history. But these people soon enthusiastically blend right into the scheme of things. What has impressed so many — not only readers, other schools, and parents, but the staff as well — is the fact that The Gull is a newspaper of, by, and for the students, and this fact has undeniably helped it reach the high level at which it now stands. Acceptance is merited on scholarship, character, leadership, and participation in extracurricular activities. These exemplary students are at the service of their schoolmates in times of academic trouble. Under the direction of Mr. Martin Severino these heroic figures strive to mold the standards of the National Honor Society. CARAGIULO ASSISTANT EDITOR JOHN MACHOVEC.........................ART EDITOR JENNIFER BREZENOFF LITERARY EDITOR EDWARD COOK LITERARY EDITOR MURIEL KEILEY LITERARY EDITOR ROBERT KIPLING PHOTOGRAPHY EDITOR MICHAEL SANDERS BUSINESS MANAGER MARY RUVOLO.............BUSINESS MANAGER LISA HENN BUSINESS MANAGER FRANCINE BROTMAN TYPING MANAGER JACKIE GOLDSTEIN TYPING MANAGER EDITOR’S NOTE When we began working on our book, not one of us was really aware of all the long hours and the ridiculous amount of energy that was necessary to create a successful yearbook. It makes us laugh when we think about all the hours spent in the Rock Room, all the nights the staff stayed in school until Mr. McWilliams kicked us out, and all the trips to Mark's, Jimi's, and Jill's to work over the weekend. It was like working on Rock Rivalry for an entire year! Of course, this yearbook would not have existed without the untiring work of members of the staff, and we would like to thank all of those involved. In our time of need, Mark exceeded his call of duty and earned himself assistant editorship. Dan Sanders also performed over and above what was required of him as a business editor by spending many late nights and weekends sweating over layouts whenever he was asked. Our literary staff, led by Jenny, Ed, and Muriel did a fine job. Our business staff, fearlessly led by Mike, Mary, and Lisa disproved the myth that our class was poor in the fund-raising area by pushing the class onward to an ad campaign of over $2,000. The art staff headed by John and Mark efficiently and effectively provided the fantastic artwork in this book. This yearbook could not have been possible without Kip, our photography editor, who spent many late nights in the darkroom. Last, but by no means least, is the typing staff, headed by Fran and Jackie, who had to put up with a lot of tall orders at the last minute (like typing this editor's note) but who have performed admirably. We would also like to extend our appreciation to Mr. Severino, our dedicated advisor, who jokingly bemoaned the sacrifices he makes for us but nevertheless contributed as much time and energy as any of us kids. Also deserving of thanks are the Taylor representative, Mr. Phil St. Pierre, who contributed his time and expert advice and Mr. Frank McWilliams for his patience, support, and good spirits. We feel the unique and creative ideas bound within this book are typical of the class of 1982, and with this being the final endeavor of our class, we hope that you will add it to your shelf of memories, not to collect dust, but to be opened frequently and relived. The weary but proud Editors of the 1982 Rock, Jill Brande and Jimi McHale MR. ROBERT D. MORSE Any attempt to sum up in a few words the twelve years of service Mr. Robert Morse has given this high school would surely be inadequate. Mentioning the achievements and events of his tenure would give no more than a cursory glance into the dedication he has shown. It was Mr. Morse’s interest in the student which made him such an extraordinary administrator. In addition to the curriculum, Mr. Morse was also very involved in the extracurricular. During his years as principal he was a familiar sight at sporting events, including those which were usually without spectators. As for other activities, there is no course of action an administrator can take which could be appreciated more than encouragement without interference. Our thanks to the man who was principal during most of our high school education cannot be adequately expressed by the words contained within. The myriad challenges that befell his position were always met with a judicious consideration of all parties concerned, including the students. His deep concern for all the students as well as for former students has made Mr. Robert D. Morse someone very special to this school. Thank you, Mr. Morse; our gratitude is unending. It would be difficult to find an individual who has demonstrated more dedication to and interest in Hast Rockaway's educational system than has Harry Bunting. His twenty-eight years of service as a member of the Board of Education, of which eighteen were spent as its President, are an exemplary display of community involvement. Although the position of Board President is not the most visible post as far as high school students are concerned, Mr. Bunting has come to be known to us through his frequent attendance of school events. There is no doubt that his amicable personality and genuine concern have endeared him to many over the years. We wish to thank Mr. Bunting for all the time he has sacrificed in his effort to improve education in the district. He will be missed. 201 MR. HARRY S. BUNTING Ti tlea ef ec £cctd 202 203 Dear Mr. Phil St. Pierre: We, the class of 1982, would like to express our sincerest thanks to you for helping us throughout this year. You’ve assisted endlessly in many ways, such as helping us to meet our deadlines, your concern in making this yearbook a success, and by always having some helpful advice. Thank you, Mr. St. Pierre. You’re terrific! A yearbook is basically a book of pictures, and the work to be done involving photography has been substantial. Carol Studios has served to lighten that load by developing pictures, supplying film, and taking Senior portraits for us. We realize how difficult it must become for Mr. Friedman, of Carol Studios, when he finds himself suddenly submerged in a plethora of local high schools’ pictures just a few days before a Taylor deadline. Despite the pressure and the confusion, the entire staff at Carol’s has nevertheless been polite, cooperative, and helpful. The Rock editors and staff express our sincerest thanks. To the East Rockaway Fire Department: The yearbook staff would like to thank you all for your precious time and enthusiasm in helping us take a picture for the 1982 ROCK.” We realize that be-ing firemen is a very demanding job.
