Rules for Rockopoly JBJECT . . is to accumulate enough credits at the end of four years to graduate, his is accomplished by maintaining high grades and a good attitude. The object 'ery simply is to take the four corners out of the board and let a happy and cooper-itive spirit monopolize students stay at E.R.H.S. HOW TO PLAY The game begins when a player starts freshman year. At this ime, and at the beginning of each year following, he or she is supplied with a .chedule, locker, and homeroom. Hard work, persistence and initiative are also lecessary aids that help each player course the board. It is mandatory to complete he board successfully in order to advance to the next level. The game ends after :ompleting the board three more times: as a sophomore, junior and senior. OAME RULES . . . Each player is given certain rules at the beginning of the year. In irder to remain a good student, one must comply with these rules. A player may lot be excessively late for class nor may one cut beyond the set limit without penalty of suspension. If a person follows the set rules and has a general all-around-he-board good attitude, he or she will turn all corners without fail. RISK . . . Once the game has begun, certain risks may be taken by the individual players. The intention of the player who takes a risk is not to be caught. Such risks as cutting, lateness to class, being in the wrong bathroom, stealing fire extinguishers, etc., can be hazardous to a successful completion of the game. Under certain conditions, various excuses for these offenses have not been acceptable. These are the car broke down , the alarm clock didn't go off , or I was on my way to school, when all of a sudden . . . It is suggested to avoid taking any of the above risks unless you are one of the few who can tell a story with a straight face. REWARD... A player may receive rewards of various forms. If he she excels in his scholastic achievements, he is rewarded by being named to the Honor Roll or Merit List. If he maintains an Honor Roll average, he may be rewarded even further at the end of the year by receiving a pin of merit. There are many extra-curriculars which warrant recognition. A player who participates in a sport will receive a letter at the end of the year. When the year is over, there is a dinner given for students of various activities. Here all who have given outstanding service in any form are also rewarded. DEAN... If a player is caught taking any risks by violating game rules, he will be summoned to the Dean's office. At this time the player must take a seat along with the rest of the soon-to-be-convicted players. Here he will sit, wait, hope, pray and frantically think of an excuse. Whether or not penalties will be administered is up to the Dean and originality of the excuse. FREE PERIOD ... If a player's schedule allows him a free period, he may spend it anyway he chooses. There are various options open to the individual. He could risk it and eat in the cafeteria or he may go to Santini's, McDonalds, home, etc. Eating is not mandatory during a free period. A player may choose to do homework, go to the library or things less beneficial such as congregating in the bathrooms or writing on new wing benches. To “Prov.” With Love There are many obligations that come with the title “Class Advisor . According to the game rules of ROCKOPOLY, the class advisor must be prepared to take on certain responsibilities. ADVISOR . . . must be a person willing to take a “risk to help the players advance. The advisor must be willing to sacrifice time and energy. He or she must be able to supply support and confidence to all players whether they are behind or ahead in the game. Most of all, the advisor must have the patience last the duration of ROCKOPOLY . I Tear Mrs. Providente, In helping us complete this game you went above and beyond your duties as advisor. Your time and dedication are things that each and every one of us will never forget. Your constant inspiration was that of a true friend. With your guidance and understanding we grew not only as individuals but as a class. Hopefully, over these past years, your reward has been as great as ours. To participate in this anxiously awaited event, the player is required to wear formal attire. Limousines are not required but are often used; hors d'oerves are served, pictures are taken and dancing is optional. A spendid i ime is guaranteed for all. All this is due to the hard work of two Chairpersons who are elected each year by members of the junior class. Special thanks are extended to our Chairpersons, Maureen McTague and janet Weiss. Who was that masked bunny?! Come over here and say that. What's a Regents? I've dated dogs before, but this is ridiculous. There was a special highlight added to our football season this year. For the first time in Rockopoly history we had a homecoming . It was sponsored by Student Council in the hope of starting a new tradition. The experiment proved to be a great success. The day led off with a parade of banners made by players of various classes and organizations. When the banners were judged, the Class of '80 came out on top. Rosemarie Renzi, a player from the Class of '80, was voted our first Homecoming Queen. Queen Rosie was presented with a bouquet and statuette at half-time of the Cold Spring Harbor game. 13 True love. Yes, we're still in the guidance office. I want my mummy 15 “Double, Double, Toil and Trouble ...” Every year a wide variety of costumes is displayed for Halloween. This year our players went all out. The quantity and quality of ideas have not been surpassed by any year previous. Many faculty members, as well as the individual players fully enjoyed this year's Halloween. Mr. Morse even had some of the dressed-up players go to the Centre Avenue School. There the younger children were able to observe the amazing originality of some of our players. When we asked Mr. Vande Water what he thought, he said that this quote by Rousseau came to mind: The World of reality has its limits; the world of imagination is boundless. Upon his shoulders falls the overwhelming task of coordinating faculties, individual teachers, student bodies and the curricula of a high school anci two grammar schools Matters of budget, liaison with school board, general upkeep and the winter and summer programs within school property are under his jurisdiction. The Board of Education is made up of citizens from our community who seek to improve the Rockopoly school system. Their various undertakings include the school budget, supervising the activities of administration, and making important decisions involving all facets of curriculum and school routine. Rockopoly rules, pace of the game, advice to players, parents and teachers — the whole board revolves around one main man, the principal player, Robert Morse. Mr. Morse is a disciplinarian and yet each student knows of his kindness. He is a leader of all students yet he has time for each individual. He is charged with enormous administrative responsibilities, but still shows concern for each individual student. Mr. Morse is one of a kind and we are lucky to have him. MR. ROBERT MORSE PRINCIPAL Mr. Edward Crowley is the Assistant Principal of Rockopoly. His contribution to the solving of administrative problems and the construction of a curriculum are a tremendous help to the principal. He is important, interested and one of the most well-known members of the faculty MR. EDWARD CROWLEY ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL Mr. Lawrence Vande Water is the Dean of Players. He is the man in charge of enforcing the 'Morse Code' and the rules of the game. Mr. Vande Water has the difficult job of determining fair penalties for players who deviate from the normal course of the game. MR. LAWRENCE VANDE WATER DEAN OF STUDENTS 21 DAD’S CLUB (I to r) Mr.). The Dad's Club, besides being a highly respected organization, is recognized by both high school students and community members for its many admirable contributions. The new score board presented this year was a big surprise and is much appreciated. The annual Sports Award Dinner has grown into an occasion in which students and faculty alike are awarded for their fine achievements in various academic and extra curricular activities. The Dad's Club is also responsible for the observation tower which is used during home football games. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to all involved for the continuing support they have given to the school and community. P.T.A. Practically every school has a Parent Teacher Association, but we in Rocko-poly are uniquely favored with one of the very active and interested associations! The members of our PTA have sponsored such worthy programs as a Scholarship Award, the Junior Class trip and, finally, — what we would all be lost without — the Rock Rivalry bulletin. Their service to the school, community and individual students cannot be measured in words. Their energy and strength have contributed greatly to making East Rockaway High School one of the best. Student Council is a vital organization without which Rockopoly would be lost. Players who are elected to the Student Council take on the responsibility of voicing the opinions of their fellow classmates. These representatives attend open meetings regularly and try their best to be as cooperative as possible when it comes to the needs of the students and the faculty. This year the Student Council was involved in many school-minded and fundraising activities. The fund raisers were beneficial to both the school and the community. For the first time in Rock history we had a homecoming dance which was followed by a parade the next day. The Student Council, also for the first time, held a March of Dimes concert and, keeping with the tradition, the Third Annual Cosenza Games. These were all a huge success. The Key Club is an organization designed to serve the school and community. This year they participated in the March of Dimes bread sale, and held various cake sales for the needy. One of the more popular clubs in Rockopoly is the Dramatics Club. Once a month, the members get to miss a day of school and gain a little culture. Aside from seeing shows, members of the Dramatics Club stage plays of their own. The experience of live Broadway, together with Rockopoly productions, gain countless REWARDS for all of the members. Being the largest club in school, it is difficult to list each and everyone of the one hundred and twenty-five members. With a considerable amount of legwork and investigation, The Gull brings to its readers newly found information and interesting stories, which concern the entire student body. Each year the paper emerges with its own unique style. This year the staff has made changes to further modernize our award-winning paper. In previous years, The Cull” has received highest honors from the Empire State Scholastic Association, Columbia Press Association, and Newsday. The present staff aims to match those accomplishments. The Varsity team had to be rebuilt because none of their veterans were returning. However, Mr. Howard Pollock managed to come up with two juniors, two freshmen, and a sophomore to take off in mid-season and almost capture first place. The junior varsity performed as H.X.P. had expected. They captured first with no problem. It looks like next year both teams will be able to come up number one as they have done so many times before. This year, our Rocks were led by Mr. Jack Richert. This was his first year as Baseball Coach. Mr. Richert did a great job with the team and is truly an outstanding player in Rockopoly . The player may join the choir at any part of the game as all that is required is the desire to sing and perform in front of an audience. Tonight the Class of '82 invites you to share in the swashbucklin' adventures of those bold buccaneers in this the 43rd Annual Rock Rivalry. Our entrance is on the recollections of an old pirate, telling of the adventures and excitement in the days of )ean Paul, the buccaneer. Over the past six weeks, we've discovered what it really means to work together as a class. We have learned and grown in a way no classroom experience would have allowed. We are very grateful for this opportunity and we ask that this very enjoyable and educational event continue. We will make this clear to you through the relationship between the common chimney sweep, Rhett, and the refined lady, Scarlett, the story of which will magnify one of history's oldest themes. After two years of Rock Rivalry we knew at the beginning of this six week period that we were heading for some hard times. We feel that this year, more than any other, we learned the true meaning of the word cooperation. The junior Class would like to thank our Over-all Chairmen, Bruce Akrongold and Kevin Healy, for their unending devotion and perseverance in helping us to achieve our unified goal. BLOOD DRIVE The annual Senior Blood Drive is fairly new to the Rockopoly scene as 1979 marks its fourth year here. It is sponsored by the Greater New York Blood Bank and organized by our own H.O.P.E. Club. The blood drive gives each player who is a senior and at least 17 years old the opportunity to give their blood to hospitals in our area Thanks to many generous players, this year's drive was a success. However, this success could never have been accomplished if it weren't for the hard work performed by )oe Vito and Dawn Lynch (chairpeople) and Mrs. M. Brock and Mrs. A. Keenan (faculty directors). Volleyball — 1 yr EDITOR'S NOTE Last spring, when our positions were chosen, I was in a state of curiosity and anticipation. Time has flown by and, now, as I write this, that time seems so far in the past. It took not only dedication and interest to get this book together, but also imagination and enormous amounts of patience. All of these qualities were in abundance when you look at the ROCK Staff. Mr. McAnulla not only possessed these qualities but shared them with all of us. Without him, our yearbook would be just another pile of paper. Now that the book is in my hands, I think the best way to thank the staffs is to look through the book and actually read the ingenious copy written by Doreen and her staff and study the original and clever artwork by Greg and Debbie and their staff. Most people look through the yearbook for pictures of themselves and friends. While you do this, think that someone had to be there taking the infinite number of pictures. For this I thank Marc and his staff. Kenny Gilloon, Keith Lane, and Chris Tamis also contributed their time and effort to our yearbook. Vmcerua has to be thanked for doing all that last minute typing and Maureen and Tommy surpassed last year and many others in their fund-raising efforts.
