I -I Ur. I Amis Superintendent The job of a superintendent is one that requires years of experience, as well as a thorough Knowledge of the workings of a school system. Dr. William Louis has the responsibility of not only overseeing the high school, but also the two grammar schools. Acting as a mediator between the Board of Education and the Administration, as well as being an overseer, Dr. Louis has been instrumental in many of the important decisions involving our years here. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Dr. Louis for his efforts on our behalf. Board of Education The Board of Education is a group of dedicated citizens who are interested in helping improve education in our schools. Their job includes the handling of the budget as well as making major decisions involving administration. Yet with all their responsibilities they remain a group of volunteers. These people should be commended on the fine job they have done and continue to do. Seated — (I to r) Mr. Roger Humes, Miss Carolyn Schempp, Mr. Harry Bunting. Standing (I to r) Mr. Earl Cole, Dr. William Louis. Missing — Mr. Peter Hughes, Mrs. Carol Leahy. 21

Mr. Robert Morse Principal Throughout the Seventies, great men have risen to power and fallen as well, but each of them survived in their reputa tion. Mr. Morse has built himself a reputation here at E.R.H.S. as an understanding leader to whom any student with a prob lem can come for help. When confronted with a problem or perhaps a service he can render, Mr. Morse takes the initiative in the resolution or completion of the problem or project. Through the application of these qualities, he has gained many friends among the student body. Mr. Edward Crowley Assistant Principal Mr. Crowley, after many years as our dean, has undertaken new duties as Assistant Principal. His new job includes organizing programs and the master schedule, as well as improving and developing the school’s curriculum. We wish Mr. Crowley the best of luck in this new position as well as thank him for his years of previous service. Mr. Lawrence andewater Dean of Students This year Mr. Vandewater inherited a very prominent as well as difficult job in the form of dean. In his first term he has more than filled his duties. He has succeeded in not only carrying out the work but also gaining the respect of the students. One of the things he has done is the reintroduction of hall monitors. We hope Mr. Vandewater will stay with this job and will continue to provide a strict, yet understanding dean as he has done this year. 20

EAST ROCKAWAY HIGH SCHOOL OCEAN AVENUE EAST ROCKAWAY, NEW YORK I ISIS (516 S99-7S89) MR. ROBERT D. MORSE Principal MR. EDWARD T. CROWLEY Ass't. Principal MR. LAWRENCE VANDE WATER Dean of Students June, 1978 The Class of 1978 East Rockaway High School East Rockaway, New York 11518 Dear Seniors: Just a few days ago I read the recent best seller What Really Ifcppened to the Class of 65? As the authors indicate many members of the class never realized their potential. Surely, the turbulent sixties won't be remembered as a golden era. But what about your class? What will you have acconplished ten years from now? If someone were to write a book about the Class of '78 a decade from now, would you want a chapter on your life? Think about it! Try to visualize where you want to be in ten years. You have limitless opportunities. Don't waste a moment. Start now to write your chapter. Make it a chapter filled with success and accorplishment. Sincerely, 1 I 8h D • Robert D. Morse RTM:mb Principal DR. WILLIAM K. LOUIS Supi. of Schools
