Jn W- What are •'THE SEV- ENTIES? What do we I mean when we refer to that era in time, that dec-■| ade of the mneteen-hun dreds in which we live and have lived? One-could explain the significance of these years from an objective standpoint by merely outlining the major • trends and occurences that took place within them. Men walking on the moon, satellites heading to other planets, j Watergate, the end of ______________ . I the Vietnam War, Arron’s 715th, and Our Nation’s Bicenntenial, would be among them. But what do the seventies really mean to us? Are they just a bunch of events all rolled up into a few years to be written away in our history books? I say no, my fellow students these years will be remembered by us for the rest of our lives. These were more than just idle times for us to watch the world advance around us. We were a part of the seventies, no matter how small, growing with them from late childhood, through our teens to early adulthood. We can look back on many difficult times as well as good times in our struggle to survive adolesence. Now what seemed like an eterntty can be summed up in a memory. But no matter how much these memories may mean to us, we must never get caught looking back, because the future is always upon us. And now the Class of 78 presents THE SEVENTIES. EAST ROCKA WA Y HIGH SCHOOL EAST ROCKA WA Y, NEW YORK VOL. 41 60-91 Organiza tions and Clubs pages Hi-59 Administration and Faculty Entertainment Underclassmen Seniors 136-197 Dear Mr. Herschenhous, As with every time period, such as the seventies, there are constant changes taking place. Every day brings new problems to be solved, and new goals to be reached. In order for a society or class to survive, there must be people who are willing to give of themselves for the benefit of all. These people must be strong, energetic, and dedicated people who give a lot more than is required of them. In you we found an advisor who not only possessed these qualities, but also one who could understand us and be patient with us through our learning process. You showed us that with a little effort, what seemed to be a far-fetched goal could become reality. As our last year with you comes to a close, one can easily reflect on the many times that you helped us help ourselves. Our memories of you as an advisor and a friend will stay with us long after the seventies are gone. In order to show our appreciation for your effort, we, the Class of ’78, would like to dedicate to you our edition of The Rock. With love. Yet many hours of planning by our fine committees and all involved, climaxing in a beautiful affair, made it seem like it passed almost before we were upon it. The usual excitement was accompanied by a great deal of anticipation as preparations were made by those to attend. And then we were there. As the limousines pulled up to “The Galaxie,” the Blue Room” filled with couples conversing, while being served hors d'oeuvres. Soon afterward each couple was led upstairs to a beautiful ballroom called the “Celestial Room.” Excellent surroundings, food, and music, provided by “Timberlake,” set the mood for a great night of dining and dancing. Ending with the final dance to our theme song “I Need You,” our prom was one that will surely be remembered for a long time. Thanks again to all those who contributed, especially our chairperson Michele Koperweis and our advisor Mr. Hersh. f7 stood in the doorway in my white gown red roses on eotton, I stood three feet from the ground.99 The ehiIdS imagination carried me along and saw me through my song.99 — Carly Simon — 13 Dear Mr. McAnulla, This year we set out to perform a task that was new to us and to you as well. The combination of a new staff and advisor could be one that leads to disaster. However, we feel that, through your willingness to do extra work in order to learn the process of a yearbook, we have come through successfully. The staff of the Rock and all those connected with it would like to express their gratitude for all the time and effort you have put in from the early summer meetings, to the culmination of our project. Although we only began working with you this year, Mr. Mac, we would like to thank you for helping us through “The Seventies. Mr. Charles McAnulla Yearbook Advisor Besides being a highly-respected organization, the Dad's Club and its many admirable contributions are recognized by both high school students and community members. The Sports Award dinner has grown from a small football dinner to an occasion in which students and faculty alike are awarded for their fine achievements in various academic and extracurricular activities. The Dad’s Club’s services have ranged from the spectator buses to the away games (which are today considered a necessity to our high school football games) to the much-appreciated observation tower which is used during home games. Though, at one time, very close to its death, the Dad’s Club has risen again to its original stature and we would like to convey our thanks for becoming an important part of our community and of our lives. (left to right) Ken Klose (treas.), Dick Gottcent (pres.), Jim Carney (sec), (missing) Al Kelley (vicepres.). Dad’s Club (I to r) Josephine Pernice (rec. sec.), Ann Klose (1 st vice pres.), Barbara Goodspeed (2nd vice pres.), Marie Celiberti (pres.), Barbara Stern (past pres.), (missing) Mary Jane Foster (corr. sec.), JoAnn Mahnken (treas.). We would like to extend our deepest gratitude and thanks to the Parent Teachers Association for its fine and dedicated work over the years we have been here. The funding of the Scholarship Award, sponsoring of the Junior Class Trip annual publishing of the Rock Rivalry Bulletin, and various other activities, which many of the students take for qranted have been brought about by the successful efforts by the P.T.A. in front of as well as behind school scenes. This year, more than ever, the members have devoted their busy schedule to not only improvement of the school, but to the betterment of our community. This valuable organization has been in existence for all of our lifetime and we sincerely hope that it will be around for many lifetimes to come. Mr. Morse has built himself a reputation here at E.R.H.S. as an understanding leader to whom any student with a prob lem can come for help. When confronted with a problem or perhaps a service he can render, Mr. Morse takes the initiative in the resolution or completion of the problem or project. Through the application of these qualities, he has gained many friends among the student body. Mr. Edward Crowley Assistant Principal Mr. Crowley, after many years as our dean, has undertaken new duties as Assistant Principal. His new job includes organizing programs and the master schedule, as well as improving and developing the school’s curriculum. We wish Mr. Crowley the best of luck in this new position as well as thank him for his years of previous service. Mr. Lawrence andewater Dean of Students This year Mr. Vandewater inherited a very prominent as well as difficult job in the form of dean. In his first term he has more than filled his duties. He has succeeded in not only carrying out the work but also gaining the respect of the students. One of the things he has done is the reintroduction of hall monitors. We hope Mr. Vandewater will stay with this job and will continue to provide a strict, yet understanding dean as he has done this year. 20 I -I Ur. I Amis Superintendent The job of a superintendent is one that requires years of experience, as well as a thorough Knowledge of the workings of a school system. Dr. William Louis has the responsibility of not only overseeing the high school, but also the two grammar schools. Acting as a mediator between the Board of Education and the Administration, as well as being an overseer, Dr. Louis has been instrumental in many of the important decisions involving our years here. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Dr. Louis for his efforts on our behalf. Board of Education The Board of Education is a group of dedicated citizens who are interested in helping improve education in our schools. Their job includes the handling of the budget as well as making major decisions involving administration. Yet with all their responsibilities they remain a group of volunteers. These people should be commended on the fine job they have done and continue to do. Seated — (I to r) Mr. Roger Humes, Miss Carolyn Schempp, Mr. Harry Bunting. As the authors indicate many members of the class never realized their potential. Surely, the turbulent sixties won't be remembered as a golden era. But what about your class? What will you have acconplished ten years from now? If someone were to write a book about the Class of '78 a decade from now, would you want a chapter on your life? Think about it! Try to visualize where you want to be in ten years. You have limitless opportunities. Don't waste a moment. Start now to write your chapter. Make it a chapter filled with success and accorplishment. This year's new and expanded Student Council, under the direction of Mr. Steve Lander, has revived the student body's and the administration’s respect for this student organization. The enthusiasm of the council’s new president, John Morano, is typical of the attitude of each and every member. Among the Councils highlights this year was the movies that were shown in the high school auditorium. Also, to try and expand the variety of its activr ties. The Council attended county and state meetings that dealt with school government. Of course, this year the Council again held the Cosenza games. 23 Art Department MRS. MILDRED BROCK H.O.P.E . . . This meant that there would be many younger players who would have to fill in the gaps. Inexperience became one of the major factors early in the year when the Rocks found themselves putting in excellent games and never being out of them, yet always coming up on the short end. An example of this is the Cold Spring Harbor game which was a defensive battle won by the opponent by a score of only 6-0. Cold Spring Harbor went on to become County Champions with this being their toughest game. With all of their problems, however, the Rocks stuck together along with the coaches and never gave up their hope for final victory. This hope was answered in the last game against Roosevelt where the Rocks put it all together to climax with an 18-12 win. Standing — Coach Forbes, Coach Tranchina, Coach Ayres. Kneeling cap F. The big game of the year was against Valley Stream South, the number one team in the division. The sparks were flying during that game. The girls had a great touch of enthusiasm which couldn’t have stopped them for anything. The spirit that the girls displayed that day has never been witnessed before in E.R.H.S. Our second year of Rock Rivalry has been a totally different six week stretch than last year's. The only similarity is that of a mass of individuals forming into a single group of sophomores striving for a common goal. We would like to thank our overall chairmen, Bruce Akrongold and Robert Rieder and entrance chairmen, Stephen Pecorella and John Turner, for their many hours of hard work and determine tion. Special thanks must go to our advisor, Miss Karen Kunz, for her interest and understanding over this year. Her effort is greatly appreciated. Good luck to all the classes tonight, especially the Seniors, who helped out when the going got tough. Lastly, we would like to wish all a very happy St. Patrick's Day. Tonight you will witness the story of a growing city interfering with the traditions and customs of the Oriental people of China town. The four people who head the parade fight the growing city and succeed in their efforts to organize a grand celebration. In our third year of Rock Rivalry competition we remember happy moments and bitter disappointments, but we remember most what Rock Rivalry is all about — working together, learning together, and maturing together. During the six weeks of preparation, many people worked hard and we thank them all. However, special thanks must go to our overall chairpersons, Tom Carney and Maureen McTague, and our entrance chairmen, Gregory Tarmin and Joseph Vito. These four individuals put their best efforts forward to make the event a success. A bouquet of thanks must be given to Mrs. Madeline Providente for her inexhaustible efforts and the devotion she has given us in this year’s Rock Rivalry. Also to be given special thanks are Mr. Severino and Mr. Richert, who helped us with whatever problems we encountered, and all the generous parents who opened up their homes to us. The best of luck to every class tonight, especially to our sister class, the Freshmen. We hope you have received as much from Rock Rivalry as we have. 'ffjrrir THE SENIOR CLASS OF 1978 PRESENTS RING-DINGS AND YODELERS” Sit back, relax, and join us as we go into the world of fantasy. For our final entrance the Class of 1978 would like to take you to Switzerland, the land of the Alps. Tonight we answer one of the most important questions you’ve all been asking . . . where does the Swiss cheese get its holes? Most will say the cheesemaker, but if you •watch’’ carefully you will soon find out. So get ready, because this is ENTERTAINMENT. This entrance could never be what it is tonight were it not for our wonderful entrance chairmen, two year veteran David Donovan, and four year veteran Christopher Brande. Thanks must also go to our past entrance chairmen Bianca Romano and Lori Calabrese. We can not thank enough our two four year over all chairmen Carol Mayell and Mark Wipfler, for putting all their time and effort into making our Rock Rivalries successful. We would also like to thank the teachers, administration, and parents who put up with Rock Rivalry every year. Special thanks must go to our dedicated and resourceful class advi sor, Mr. Jeffrey Herschenhous, who guided us from inexperienced Freshmen to mature Seniors. Our last thanks must go to Mr. Martin Severino and Mr. Jack Richert, whose help over the past years has been deeply appreciated by the class. We wish all the classes the best of luck tonight and in all Rock Rivalries, especially our sister class, the Sophomores. Enjoy, and make the best of the next two years. We regret leaving such a unique and wonderful experience as Rock Rivalry. Thanks for being an important part of our life. 1978 ROCK RIVALRY SCORE SHEET Wt. FROSH SOPH JR. SR. Each student maintains a genuine interest and can find something to do, whether it be athletic, artistic or entertaining, to help the general cause. These people, in many cases, utilize skills that are too often left dormant during the school year. The ultimate goal of the competition is to win the highly prized silver cup. However, win or lose, each person should be proud of his achievements in that they show what an individual’s mind and body can accomplish in just a few short weeks. The supreme feeling of togetherness within your individual class is another aspect of Rock Rivalry which is truly highly prized. Each person works in harmony with the next and creates a glorious feeling of unity. Some people say that “Too much stress is put on winning.” This may be the attitude of many before the final decision, but, in the end, everyone seems to come together in the true spirit of good sportsmanship. Besides, if the goal of winning was not important, what fun would come out of the final victory? The SENIORS truly had something to be proud of this year in their winning of the cup. The astonishing score of ninety points, all first and second places, and breaking the four year “curse” which was said to prevent a class from winning Rock Rivalry every year, showed a strong balance and depth by the class. This is not to put down any other class, for in many events there were well deserved victories. After it was all over, the usual speculations of what “could have” or perhaps “should have” been were present. This is to be expected and is a good sign that each class will try even harder next year to win. The Class of 1978 would like to wish the best of luck to all the classes next year, especially to our sister class of 1980. Finally, our class would like to thank everyone for understanding that many innocent things happen in the excitement of Rock Rivalry and the masses sometimes make mistakes that should be dealt with fairly and with an open mind. Because the donor turnout was larger than in past years, the Red Cross felt it was worthwhile to set up their donating center here at the high school. Though some donors were rejected for some reason, the Class of 1978 still managed to have a very successful campaign, donating some 43 pints of blood to the Inter County Blood Services in Rockville Center. I've been delaying this page from deadline to dead line in fear of having nothing to write, but after months of work I could go on for ever. In June of 1977 we were faced with 208 blank pages waiting to be filled. After much hard work and dedication every page had been filled with the best pos sible material. As editor I could take all the credit for this production, but credit must go where credit is due — to the Class of 1978. Many people helped contrib ute to this yearbook but it was the Class of '78 who made it possible. I thank the whole class for the production of this yearbook. The production of a yearbook takes many long hours of work, and dedication. I can't thank enough my asst.-editors Chris Bra.ide and Michele Koperweis who I could always depend on for their help throughout the year. Literary editors Biance Romano and Mike Wetherell could always be counted on when I needed last min ute assignments and articles. Having the right pictures was very important in creating this yearbook. For this I thank Photography editors Warren Kipling and John Caragiulo, for taking excellent photographs and many times developing them at the last minute. This year the success of the book depended greatly on artwork. Art editor Vinny Della Ratta and his art staff must be thanked for their excellent work. Typing editors Joyce Schatzle and Gabriella Petrucci were always there at the last minute, sometimes to type fifty pages in two days. With Cindy Sykes and Hope Brotman as Business managers I always knew there would be enough money to produce this fine yearbook. A special thanks must go to Mr. McAnulla. He was always there giving us his help and his encouragement. He gave us the push we needed when we were behind and the praise we needed when we were ahead. To everyone involved, I thank you for your help, time, and sometimes patience. Producing this yearbook has been a unique and satisfying task for me and I hope everyone else involved. It has been an experience to look back on and never forget. Thanks again, Class of 1978, for making the yearbook possible. This is your book — Read and ENJOY!
