Nature . . . It's all around us Filled with beauty, full of fun The roaring sea, a baby duck. The setting of the sun, A billowy cloud, virgin snow. The quickness of a deer, A soaring eagle, a cactus flower, A waterfall so clear, A maple tree, a rainbow, A fierce wind when it blows. The morning dew or evening fog, The sweetness of a rose, A dandelion, a butterfly. The chirping birds that sing. Nature . . . So full of beauty, touching everything. In Loving Memory °f Mr. Louis Cosenza Memories of the one we've loved Still cast their gentle glow To grace our days and light our paths Wherever we may go . . Through your friendship we have discovered the amount of concern and patience one man can have for so many people. In return, we would like to dedicate LIFE to you, for you have been a very important part of our lives. Thank you Mr. C. . . for everything. from ROCK '75 9 33 IFACULTY.......... (ORGANIZATIONS..... 43 ENTERTAINMENT • • 85 SPORTS............ 119 UNDERCLASSMEN... 134 SENIORS.......... 3 nnn THANKS!! We could hove covered this page with that one word and you would still have known all the gratitude that we felt. We appreciate everything that you have done to make this book what it is. Perhaps one of the most admirable characteristics that you displayed to us during the time that we worked together was a great sense of judgment. You knew that there were times when you had to give each one of us a push or keep the pressures of deadlines clearly evident in our minds. You forced us to give our maximum effort in handling the various conflicts that arose. As a true advisor you also recognized that there were times when it was more appropriate to stand in the background, forcing us to make decisions on our own. We’re also grateful for your extra time, for example driving us to the city (and barely getting back). Then there were the afternoons spent proofreading the pages we had done. The mutual respect and admiration that we have developed during our relationship in the past year is something that we are glad to have experienced. For this and much more, we say it again. THANKS!! 4 . | PTA The work of the P.T.A. is always a very important part of the activities of the students of the E.R.H.S. The past year was no exception. The P.T.A. has worked hard to raise money to help improve things for the students. The famous Rock Rivalry Bulletin is just one of the many tasks that the P.T.A. undertakes each year. Most seniors would consider the scholarships awarded at the end of the season as one of the most important activities. The sponsoring of the Junior Class Trip and the Senior Banquet are two more of the accomplishments in the busy schedule of the P.T.A. P.T.A. DAD S CLUB The contributions of the Dad’s Club to both the students of the high school and the community are often taken for granted and even over looked. The annual Sports Awards Dinner has been expanded from a football dinner to an occasion where the students and teachers are honored for their participation and achievement in a wide variety of activities. Another consistent activity of the Dad’s Club is the spectator bus to the away games, which is greatly appreciated by many of us. A more apparent contribution the observation tower used for the home football games. The Dad’s Club is now on an upsurge. At one time it was close to dying, but thanks to the efforts of its members, it has increased significantly in membership and is looking forward to increasing the amount of peo- pie involved. Dr. Louis Superintendent Dr. Louis is a stranger to the halls of the High School because his job entails many responsibilities that take him outside the school. His years of experience in education have contributed to his many accomplishments. Dr. Louis works in cooperation with the Board of Education overseeing the various undertakings they deal with. These include the functions of the grammar school — Rhame Avenue and Centre Avenue, as well as the high school. During our twelve years of education in this school district. Dr. Louis has seen us through each year. Now as we prepare ourselves for graduation we would like to thank him for his guidance and direction throughout the years. BOARD OF EDUCA TION SITTING (I to r): Mrs. Carol Leahy, Mr. Eorl Cole, Mr. Horry Bunting, Mr. Peter Hughe . STANDING (I to r): Mi Schempp, Dr. William Loui . MISSING: Mr. Roger Humes. The members of the Board of Education serve the community in an effort to upgrade the educational facilities in our school district. Their primary functions and responsibilities include overseeing the activities of the administration as well as dealing with the annual school budget. The members of the Board, many of whom have years of experience behind them, have done their jobs with dedication as well as excellence. Their true concern for the school district is clearly evident in the work they do. 6 Mr. Robert Morse Principal In many schools, the position of Principal carries with it the feeling of dislike from the majority of the students. Such is not the case at East Rockaway High School. There is one man responsible for this benevolent viewpoint. That man is Mr. Morse. Many a time, students argue over who really knows him better. They eagerly go down to his office to talk about anything that bothers them. Mr. Morse can be proud of the reputation that he has, because we re proud of it too. The respect and admiration that he receives allows our principal to get personally involved in various situations. Mr. Morse is a very busy man, but the reason he's busy is that he always finds time for everyone. For this, and many other things, we thank you. Mr. Freund Assistant Principal Mr. Freund, the assistant principal, helps out the principal with various matters and is in charge of developing and improving the curriculum of our school. As the organizer of the basic program and master schedule, Mr. Freund is often faced with difficult decisions. The fact that our school's curriculum is quite good for that of a small school, is proof that he has made many beneficial decisions in this area. Mr. Freund seems to be very happy in his job, which he feels is really a part of and an extension of teaching. y - Mr. Edward Crowley Dean of Students When the opportunity arose for Mr. Crowley to take on the administrative position of dean of students, he accepted because he wanted more challenging work. Perhaps his interest in the job explains why he does it so well. As dean, Mr. Crowley has innumerable responsibilities, but his most important work deals with the supervision of all matters dealing with student discipline and attendance. We are reminded of Mr. Crowley's continual task every day when his voice comes over the announcements with that one phrase we’ll never forget. elieve that you would agree that this has tee year far all of us. First, there was the bitter winter wfc into focus the need for our nation to find new sources ment our declining resources. Secondly, we mourned the loss of someone we Mr. Louis Coser.za. Day after day, the kitchen staff serves several hundred meals to the students of ERHS. They prepare the food, as well as serve it. Throughout the last few years they have made constant changes broadening the variety and improving th • quality of the food. This year an important addition was made to the menu. For those people who wanted some natural nutrition, health foods were introduced. They include cottage cheese, wheat germ, honey and many more. With the help of the kitchen staff our menu now ranges from fattening ice cream to natural wheat germ. 29 30 DorImg, stort of the beginning and tell me all about it.' 'Well. (Reprinted from the GULL) Returning for its second year, the Student Peer Organization, SPO, will have a Drug and Alcohol program in East Rockaway High School. The organization, sponsored by the Town of Hempstead, was started last year by two teachers from the Department of Drug and Alcohol Addiction. This year, Norma Alter and Linda Edel-man are joined by two more teachers, Maris Licker and Marsha Goldstein. SPO is made up of 16 juniors and seniors from ERHS. This program teaches the 16 SPO members about certain problems that seventh graders may face coming from grammar school right into the high school. On the last Wednesday of each month a Student Peer group of 3-5 juniors and seniors go to the 7th grade social studies classes. The teacher leaves the room and it's all students together. One of the 4 SPO teachers sits in on the class. The topics discussed may range from peer pressures on marijuana and alcohol, to family problems or school work. Films and activities are part of these SPO classes. East Rockaway is the first high school to have a drug and alcohol addiction program. Since it's sponsored by the Town of Hempstead, the school pays nothing for it. SPO is such a great success in ERHS, it is now starting to spread to other schools. Rockville Centre will be starting a SPO program very soon. 39 all ideas brought before the chair tried to console us with the fact that Id be held at a later date, in which decided upc s meeting. sked to leave type of he ideal th n have a eir future, ove issue, nine memb these ispires at tl f our plea ape to atte we will kn ct that the tould have t rs which c notified that the group won over all, first place. Through the combined efforts of many people, the staff has been able to bring investigative reporting and informative writing to the high school level. Working along side of Mr. McAnulla, the faculty advisor, the staff produced a paper which a school of any size could be proud of. Published twice monthly, the paper exhibited the talents of all involved. By covering news subjects outside the scope of the school, the paper has, on more than one occasion, gained the admiration of people outside of the halls of East Rockaway. Recognized in recent years by awards, from the Columbia Press Association, Newsday, and the Empire State Scholastic Press Association, the paper continually represents the school honorably. A sincere gesture of thanks is given to all involved in making this year’s publication of the ’GuH such a success. All writers, artists, and editors are to be commended for their efforts and for making working on the paper an enjoyable and rewarding experience. A special thanks is also given to the people behind the scenes, especially the sellers who this year made record sales possible. . • . .r . h Y Y nY (a t a— Y:,Y -;•• ENTERTAINMENT: SUNLIGHT The growing seedling has made noticeable :■; changes. DEPARTMENT CONCERT CHOIR Under the direction of Mr. John Pellicone, the Senior Band has undertaken some longterm projects in an effort to create a new interest and enthusiasm in both the members and the rest of the school. They began by spending many hours trying to develop a half-time show for the home football games. The result was a success with the added dimensions of marching and formations. The preparations for both the winter and spring concerts were worthwhile, for both were good performances. A major change this year was the formation of a Student-Government within the band. Larry Pecorella, Chris Tamis, Victor Ruvolo Directed by Mr. Severino and Mr. Miller The Freshman Class of 1980 presents “Amdralaroma” During the post two years when we were still in Junior High, Rock Rivalry was an annual experience when we were entertained by the four high school classes, when we could be supercritical of their efforts at a theatrical production, when we could root for the classes in which we hod brothers or sisters in the entrance, stand, artistic and sports competitions, and when we heard words'' obout cooperation, sportsmanship, sacrifice, sleeplessness, confusion, disappointments, and character building, in general. The post six weeks, though, these ' words'' were no longer words.'' They became a part of our own living experience for which we will always be grateful. Now we ore doing the entertoming, and all our criticism has been directed at ourselves in on effort to put on an entrance we can be proud of. We would like to wish all four classes success this evening, ond especially our sister class, the Juniors, who have helped us a great deal. The theme of our first attempt at an entrance is o simple one of boy meets girl, boy loves girl, boy buys girl, boy marries girl, set in the simple setting of Ancient Rome. We felt the need to keep it simple due to our lock of experience but there was certainly no lack of enthusiosm ond hard work on the port of our overall chairpersons, Bruce Akron-gold ond Roberta Greenspan, and entrance chairmen George Efstathiou and Stephen Pecorella, and the various committees. As for our class odviser. Miss Karen Kuni, we came to view her os an older, wiser member of the Freshman class who experienced all the same emotions we did. Our special gratitude goes to Mr. Martin Severino and Mr. Jock Richert for their support and helpful solutions to so many of our problems ond to the parents who opened up their homes and hearts to us during our preparation for this event. The Sophomore Class of 1979 presents “Wat-er Way to Live” Tonight the Sophomore Class invites you to the lost city of Atlantis. Although many people think Atlantis no longer exists they will soon find out that it does and always will. The people of Atlantis will attempt to raise the city above the surface, hoping that this will bring them their FREEDOM. As the great intellects of Atlantis are working to achieve this goal, a child of innocence discovers the true meaning of FREEDOM. We would like to express our deepest thanks to our class adviser, Mrs. Madeline Providente, who is always there to help us. We are also very grateful to have two men like Mr. Richert and Mr. Severino who are always there lending a helpful hand. We would like to extend a special thanks to those parents who so kindly opened their homes and their hearts, for without them Rock Rivalry would never be possible. Last but not least, we would like to wish all the classes the best of luck, especially the Seniors, our sister class. However far you wander, wherever you may roam, our thoughts will still be turning to those we used to know-. We love you Seniors. The Junior Class of 1978 presents “Pardon My Solar Perplexity ” Good Eveningl The Junior Class welcomes you to the Middle Ages, when nobles ruled the land and people were subject to a life of ignorance. Tonight we will tell of the plight of one man, Steller, in his efforts to enlighten his fellow serfs. He meets opposition in the form of the cruel noble, Barnaby, who tries to stifle Steller in his struggle for advancement. The play ends in a beneficial compromise which surprises all. Going into our third Rock Rivalry we felt that our task would be much easier. As the six weeks went on, we faced new situations with which we coped and from which we learned. At this time we would like to thank our overall chairmen Carol Mayell and Mark Wipfler, and our entrance chairmen Christopher Brande and David Donovan who were behind us all the way. We would also like to give thanks to our class adviser, Jeffrey Herschenhous, who was always there when we needed him. Special thanks must go to Mr. Severino and Mr. Richert whom we could always depend on if we had any problems. Thank you! The Class of '78 would like to wish every class the best of luck tonight. We hope they have enjoyed the past six weeks as much as we have. A special wish for good luck must go to our sister class, the Freshmen, who are definitely on the road to success. Buono sera! Welcome to the rebirth of learning — the Renaissance, a time when the arts and knowledge flourished. For our final entrance, the class of 1977 would like to toke you to Florence, Italy during this romantic period. Our story revolves around two of the most talented artists in Florence. Geonardo, one of the artists, is commissioned to paint the St. Mane Chapel; he selects his friend Marcello and his apprentice, Antonio, to assist him in this assignment. Neglected and hurt, Geonardo's wife, Rosa, finds comfort in the security of Marcello's company. At the same time, Geonardo ond his favorite model. Mono, are keeping company. Sit back, relax, ond see how our story unfolds. This entrance could never have become what it is tonight if it weren't for the untiring efforts ond hard work of our entrance chairman, Sarah Wipfler, ond four years entrance chairman, Larry Pecorella. Words can't express the appreciation we hove for our overall chairmen Barry Akrongold and Marigrace Rocioppi, for putting all their time and energy into making this year's Rock Rivalry a success. Special Thanks must go to our class adviser Mr. Kenneth Klein for his continual guidance and interest over the post four years. We could never have gone through these four years of R.R. without the help from the Rock Rivalry chairmen Mr. Severino and Mr. Richert. We would like to wish the other classes the best of luck, especially our sister class, the class of 1979. In this our final year we look back upon experiences of former Rock Rivalries. These memories will remain dear to our heorts forever. We are thankful for the knowledge and good times R.R. has brought us. And the winners of the 41 st Annual Rock Rivalry are . . . the Seniors! That was the one sentence that we waited so long to hear. The cup was ours! But we were winners long before that announcement was ever made. As Freshmen, we put on an entrance that was so impressive that one judge awarded it a first place. Our stand earned us a first place in construction. From that point on, the class above us knew we were going to be good, and would certainly give them a lot of trouble. The next year, our entrance took a solid 2nd place, just behind our cup-winning sister class. Again our stand, a Viking ship, provided strong competition, even though the judges didn’t give it a first. The Class with Class was on its way. Then came our Junior year, when we put on one of the finest entrances ever seen in East Rockaway, Who's Next Rex? received high point scores from all the judges and earned us a first place. Our stand was a magnificent float, decorated with hand-made flowers; our mural received a tie for first place in a close decision. When the score was announced, we missed out on the cup by a single point, but we all knew we had won. We celebrated the entire week as winners because we knew we were. And then there was this year. We totally dominated all the other classes in sports. We went into Rock Rivalry night with a comfortable lead . . . a lead we'd never lose. We took a pair of first places with our stand, a cathedral. Our entire class spent time making the bricks that decorated that fantastic stand, which outclassed everyone else's. Then our mural took a first place, assuring us of the cup. Our class was so strong in every other event that it didn't hurt our score when we took a second in entrance and artistic interpretation. We still won comfortably by 7 2 3 points. The following weekend brought the four classes all together at several big parties. During that time everyone was a winner. But then came Monday morning. Over one hundred of us paraded through East Rockaway with the cup held high, leading the way. As our procession made its turn into the oval it became clear to the entire school that there was only one real winner. The cup belonged to the Class of '77 because we worked hard to get it. It was our reward for four years of work and sacrifice, and most importantly, fun. We paraded around the oval on foot, following the cup, which wa held high in the air. The past and present were both in our minds as we sang the finale song from our Junior Year: The Mardi Gras is finally here. So everyone stand up and cheer. We're gonna have a great big party — for the best time of the year! And as we returned the cup, we slowly and sadly realized that it was all over. Rock Rivalry was now a part of the past, but the many memories that it had brought us will never leave us. 60 SOPHOMORES 67 Dear Mr. Klein, When we chose you as class advisor, we were inexperienced and unsure eighth graders. You shared our inexperience, but recognized that it was your role to pull us together. Your enthusiasm, encouragement, and guidance helped unite us into one helluva class. Throughout our four years together, you were always there when we needed you, giving us advice and confidence. More importantly, you realized that there were times when we were better off making the decision by ourselves, regardless of the outcome. If we were wrong, you comforted us. If we were right, you celebrated with us. 68 We've all changed a lot since we started high school. We've grown and matured a lot. We’ve looked at the high school from both the bottom and the top. The changes you encountered were just as important. You came to us as a bachelor, and we were lucky enough to be with you for your marriage and for the birth of your son, Gary. It's time we say goodbye both to each other and to you. Before we do, we want to dedicate this yearbook to you. Thanks for everything; we'll miss you. With love. The Class of 77 69 A thing of beauty is a joy forever: Its loveliness increases; it will never pass into nothingness. — John Keats — 71 The Junior Class of Nineteen Hundred and Seventy-Seven of East Rockaway High School welcomes you to the Junior — Senior Prom THE WAY WE WERE Friday Evening, the Fourth of June Nineteen Hundred and Seventy-Six to be held at the Crest Hollow Country Club Woodbury, New York Music by HoUywuud One by one each limousine pulled through the gates of the Woodbury Country Club. We all were wide-eyed as we caught our first glimpse of the place where our prom would be held. The sun was just setting on the distant horizon, and a large chandelier glistened through the dusk. Just hours before, we had stood looking into a mirror, making last minute adjustments on a tuxedo or gown. The many weeks of excited anticipation were behind us now. The prom was here. That night, the world was ours. After hors d’oeuvres and pictures on the garden terrace each couple made their way to the ballroom where our prom was to be held. With the music of Hollywuud playing throughout the evening, we hustled and L.A. walked until exhaustion. As the final song was played, each couple embraced and for that one moment nothing else mattered. For most the prom didn't end until after sunrise. For all, it ended all too soon. The joyful memories that the night instilled in our hearts can never be duplicated. Even though half of us would get a chance to do it again, all of us will never forget The Way We Were. 73 Mr. Klein, Princess Liz Laskowski, Prince Frank Arena, King Nicky Gallo, Queen Maria Indelicato, Mr. McAnulla. 76 Give me the splendid silent sun, with all its beams full dazzling — Whitman — What's the matter fa you? SPORTS: CHALLENGING WINDS Nature sends forth winds to scatter seeds for future plants and also to test the strength of those existing. Every sport we have participated in has tested our physical discipline and ability, as well as our courage and dedication. This wind has pushed us closer and closer each year to the realization of our final goals of achievement. . . It's all over. The crowds and the coaches, the smiles and the tears, the sadness and the fun are all behind you. Teams will never play together again. Winning or losing seems unimportant as you think back on the time you spent devoting yourself to a sport. What mattered was that you had the experience of participating. And now that it’s all over, what do you have left? Memories, that can never be taken from you. 86 J. V. CHEERING J.V. CHEERLEADERS D. Blossberg, S. Rondozzo, B. Romono, Corbonoro, C. Roponoro, S. The athletic field was invaded each morning by a determined group of boys. The pleasures and self satisfaction that one feels by being a member of the football team cannot be explained; it must be experienced. This past season the pain and agony that the Rocks went through during pre-season training paid off. They defeated Lutheran in their first game and went on to triumph over a strong Manhasset team. This was to be their last good break. From there they met with stiff competition and bad luck. Games which seemed well within reach were lost by less than a touchdown. The coaches’ love and concern for each individual on the team made them realize they could never lose their determination. As the season drew to a close, the Rocks turned their attention to the Lynbrook team which loomed in front of them. With six losses behind them, the players went out onto the field like wounded, maddened animals. There was nothing to save their strength for, so this was the final plunge. The East Rockaway Rocks played like they had never played before! The Owls were helpless against the unrelentless attack and were forced to bow down against the gallant Rocks. The word victorious cannot describe the experience the players felt that afternoon. Looking back, we don’t like to think about the won-lost record, but we will always remember the defeat of Lynbrook. Perhaps someday we may share the memories of playing football, an experience we’ll never forget. This year the badminton team had a very successful season, with nine of the fifteen players entering the playoffs. Although the team was composed primarily of Sophomores and Juniors, this did not deter them from having a prosperous season. The experience they gained this year will benefit them in the future. As the 1976 field hockey season came to an end, the Varsity team had not won a game. To some they were defeated, yet inside each one of them they knew the score did not tell the quality of the season. Among the team lasting friendships had developed and the importance of sportsmanship had evolved. Miss Kunz, Varsity Coach, had been responsible for much of their attitudes, because to her as long as each member did their best she was satisfied. Varsity captains Marigrace Racioppi and Carol Mayell kept the team’s spirit up as they brought out a feeling of unity among the team. The year was one of rebuilding and learning for next year as only three seniors are leaving. But J.V. had a different type of season. The team mainly consisted of rookie players who learned very quickly. They enjoyed a 2-1-3 season and are well prepared for next year. 511 UNO: P. Morphy, D. Corbonaro, R. Moyer, L. Shomroth, J. The problem with this year's team was not the lack of talent, but the inconsistency of it. The Varsity lineup was like a revolving door this year, as Mr. Pollock was constantly juggling the lineup, trying desperately to find the right combination, and to jell them together. Leading the team this year were Seniors Hank Benning and Paul Pisani. Benning, a four-year veteran on Varsity bowling, finished in the top ten with a high average for his second straight year. Pisani finally reached his full potential this year, with a couple of hot streaks. Also helping the team out in the clutch was vastly improved Doug Wolf. The team also had many younger players, who are future for Mr. Pollock. In particular, Vincent Mirabelli looked good. Hank Benning 100 For the Seniors, it was a year of realization, yet a year for hope. The thoughts of another championship season coming into their minds, but then realizing it was just a dream. A year of determination, and a year of pride. For the others, this year proved to be a year of experience, and a year of memories. Robert Aue Before the season started, there was a lot of uncertainty and speculation as to exactly how the ROCKS would play this season. There was one thing that was embedded in the minds of the players: improvement. There was the natural drive to improve upon oneself deep inside each player. This year’s team also had the desire to improve itself as a team. Many of the players accomplished their individual goals, but it took each player's contribution to drastically improve on last year’s dismal record. It was truly a team effort whenever the ROCKS picked up a victory. The team was led by two players, who were the key to the entire season. Seniors Robert Aue and Don Maloy, both three year veterans, were the spark plugs of the team. Aue consistently controlled the boards, collecting numerous rebounds and points. Maloy provided a deadly offensive threat with his outside shots and penetrating drives. However these players could only do so much. In order to achieve a victory the entire team had to play up to their potential. This was effectively done by Seniors Frank Arena, Bill Goodspeed and George Suhr, Juniors Warren Kipling and John Morano and Sophomore Fran Pollock. Together with the fine coaching of Mr. Harry Friesleben, the players made this season very rewarding for everyone involved. The team contained several Juniors on the squad, something that ERHS hasn’t seen in a while. The experience that these veterans gave the team, together with the overall talent of the younger players, gave the team a successful combination. A victory over a very strong Malverne team was one of the most exciting games of the year for the J.V. squad. This victory in itself was quite an achievement, as well as a tribute to the players and Coach Kemler for their ability to put it all together. The dedication and enthusiasm that was very much a part of the team paid off for the players with accomplishments of which they are proud. These players, who will next year be the Varsity team, provide a solid future for East Rockaway basketball. 108 Girl’s Softball Kay Henshaw Coach — Ms. Faucher Patricia Kelly AC ROW: D. McMahon, D. Their practices had an optimistic beginning, due to the fact that a new type of offense and defense was introduced and worked out very well. Another fact which brought the team's spirits pretty high was that they played together as a team and enjoyed it. Unfortunately their coach. Miss Kunz, became ill and they lost the first few games. Upon her return however, they scored their first victory against Oceanside which helped the enthusiasm for the rest of season. The J.V. team which is coached by Mr. Hershenhous and assisted by co-captains Doreen Reinhard and Susan Zubelik has won a very admirable record for the season. Thit year I wot bletted with both. I looked forward to every practice knowing that any effort on my part would be rewarded with a response that would make my coaching endeavors worthwhile. I will count Cross-Country '76 as one of the highlights of my many coaching years. Vorsity trock season is always o hectic but rewarding time for me. This year I hove one of my most talented groups ever. I know all the work and organized confusion of trying to manage and mentor sixty young men and women will end up as a most pleasurable and meaningful experience for me. The good fellowship and lasting friendships that I find in coaching track at East Rockaway make all the time and effort seem minimal. The Varsity trock team of '77 con be numbered high on the list of my most fond memories. Mr. Forbes: It started off as a great season. Then problems appeared . . . mental and physical breakdowns both on and off the field. We tost direction and leadership and as a result we floundered for a while. In the final part of the year we started to mature both as football players and humon beings. We did not win but we learned a great deal about each other. It hod been a long hard growing period but we hung tough and we finally made it as a Team. Mr. Macaluso: My recollections of the 1976 Rock football team contain thoughts of arduous pre-season training, optimistic expectations, and a special kind of camaraderie between staff ond players. Obviously, after a lightning start, we stumbled upon the agony of disappointing performances and frustrations. Week ofter week, our goals seemed on impossible dream — until the Lynbrook game. I will always cherish the memory of that game not only because of the victory, but for the very special human feelings that emerged from it. We played that game with intensity, love, desire and especially dedication — for our stricken coach, Mr. Lou Cosenza. No one in the stands could ever grasp what was in my heort that day — how we walked onto the field a team, but left it like a family. For those memories, I thank our entire team, especially the seniors. Corner Mri. Barrett: The well-known goal of every cooch it to develop the talents of athletes in their abilities as players and as self-reliant responsible people. Perhaps a lesser known goal is the desire of cooches to open the door of communication between th« athletes they train and the outer world in which they compete. This is best achieved when athletes ore responsive to the feelings of their competitors. The athletes of the closs of '77 helped me realize both gools by their dedication to the extreme demands of proctice and competition, and by their magnificent display of humility and generosity of character towards the teoms they played. Mr. Honig: Although there were not many members of the Class of '77 on the Varsity Baseball team, there were still some fond memories that I hod of them. In particular, there was Don Maloy's development into a fine ballplayer, ond Paul Pisam's intense desire thot helped him become on excellent pitcher. In oddition, the attitudes ond abilities of Eddie Visone ond Honk Benmng were something of which they could be proud. If the experience thot these ballplayers hod, does, in any way, moke them better people, then I feel that it has all been a worthwhile experience, for both them ond for me. Miss Faucher: I reflect back on the past six years and when the Senior class comes to mind I move from athletics ond physical education to some of the greatest people, who have been a delight and pleasure for me to have had the honor of knowing and shoring the experience of growing into odults. Each time I hove hod to osk for assistance or support the Senior Closs members hove been willing to share their experience ond knowledge. Best of all life’s happiness and success to people who core about life ond its meaning. Mr. Pollock: The Senior Class as bowlers and gentlemen may be the last of o vanishing breed. As personified by such as Honk Banning, Poul Pisom, Doug Wolf ond Phil Unfricht they were performers (as our bowlers are wont to be) operating at full capocity. In class os well as on the team they were respectful, responsible ond restrained. They helped us to unprecedented bowling heights os tuniors and sophomores as well. I take pride in blending good athlete with good scholar and good guy. This was truly our Senior Class. Real Classl I hope we con stem the onrushing tide of slovenliness, brashness ond irresponsibility thot typifies the new breed. I am sure I will look back on today's Senior Closs with a nostalgic oura. What might hove beenl What might have been) Mr. Friesleben-. Athletically, the closs of '77 con never be faulted for lock of effort. While not an outstanding closs talent-wise, their sense of feomwork ond desire mode them, as total athletes, a cut above averoge. The five boys thot played for our varsity basketball team best exemplified the closs of 77's athletic attitude. Through their willingness to learn and sacrifice, to hustle in the foce of any odds, come the leadership that was responsible for ony success the team hod this past year. 117 x .tr vvv f ,. UNDERCLASSMEN: WARMTH The final and probably most important factor which aids the young tree's growth is the warmth of the environment. Our social climate, the warmth and friendship of the underclassmen, and of our predecessors, created the right environment during these years. We have appreciated this warmth and hope that they all have realized it, too. We hope that our many friends, older and younger, have as wonderful a store of good memories as we have. At a meeting with Mr. Morse, the Council discussed several possibilities for changes both in the structure and in the student activities they are involved with. Unfortunately, one of these activities was canceled this year — girls football. Many of the students and adults were sorry to see this go, for it is a profit making event. By far the most significant contribution of the Student Council was the organization of the student donations to the Louis Cosenza Memorial Fund. This year the Council united itself, and started taking positive steps that showed its role in school functions and laid the foundation for future years. SENIORS: A FULL TREE A large and beautiful tree has unfolded before us. It's all complete now, a twelve year process is finished. We've matured; we're graduating! Each one of us, like the leaves of the tree, will disappear during the fall, but the memories that the Class of '77 has, will never leave us. Our roots have grown strong, nourished by good soil, rain, sunlight, winds and warmth, enabling us to branch out in different directions. But we'll never lose the sense of unity we share from these years of growing together. Although we're proud of ourselves for achieving this goal, we realize there is more growing to do as we reach out to the future. This was started by the class of 1976 last year. The 1977 blood drive was especially significant and important to the Seniors in that it was done in the honor and memory of Mr. Cosenza. The Seniors who donated did so becasue they wanted to. The turnout was tremendous, for over seventy of them gave. Although a few of them ended up on the floor, it was a new and exciting experience and everyone returned to school a little weak but very happy. COSENZA GAMES The Louis Cosenza Games were started by the Student Council this year to raise money for the Louis Cosenza Fund. The games were divided into two parts, volleyball — with the girls vs the women faculty, and basketball — with the boys vs the men faculty. Each class had three representatives in each sport and the faculty teams consisted of alumni as well as faculty. The students won the volleyball, but the alumni-teachers prevailed over the students in basketball. The games were a great success, with gate receipts over $1,000, refreshments sold by cheerleaders totaling $150, and anonymous contributions bringing the total to over $2200. All the money, in memory of “Mr. C. went to his family. 142 M Arnold E Morigroce R, Donna S. John D Barbara A Loretta F Kathleen B We Remember. . . We thought it appropriate on this page to express ou fl thanks for the beautiful photographs that were donated™ the yearbook. We would especially like to thank the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens, Bill Welter, Mr. Severino, Mr. Klein, Warren Kipling, Orea White, The Racioppi Family, Rich LaRossa, John Caragiulo and the Museum of Natural History 1976-1977 Many, many events have already happened in our lifetime and especially in the past year. In the summer of '76, America celebrated her 200th birthday. The waters of New York harbor were filled with a variety of boats during OP SAIL. The display of Tall Ships as well as modern naval ships drew millions of people to see the spectacle on July 4. Following that was the Summer Olympic Games in Montreal. The competition and cooperation between nations attracted the attention of millions. People across the country sat beside their TV’s pulling for the U.S. boxing and basketball teams, Decathalon winner Bruce Jenner, Russia’s Olga Korbut, Rumania’s Nadia Comaneci and many, many more. In January we welcomed a new year and a new president. On January 21, James Earl Carter was inaugurated our 39th president, after defeat- 52 CURRENT E VEN TS ing Gerald Ford in a close election. When Jimmy Carter took office, all of America sincerely hoped that this man would put an end to the economic problems that have recently plagued our country. Since Mother Nature is the theme of this yearbook, it is impossible for us to neglect the hurricane of the summer of '76 and the extremely cold, hard winter. Hurricane Belle ripped through Long Island with fierce winds, but fortunately was not as damaging as expected. This past winter produced the most snow and cold that any of us remember. From December to February, there was snow on the ground in East Rockaway, with only a few days of warmth in between. But as always, whenever we think about the past and present, we also think of a brighter and even better future. J 153 Barbara Abarno Larry . . . Always smiling . . . I could scribble on and on about a lot of things, but so man people don’t know how much work is involved in th« production of o yearbook So many things hov happened since that first meeting we hod to select our theme. In this time of ecological crisis, whot would be o more appropriate theme than NATURE? So there we began our long struggle of problems, late nights, decisions and deadlines. Wos it worth it? OF COURSE. Here is our collection of memories, memories of classmates, teochers, sports ond events. This yearbook hos been created to save all these good times we've hod at E.R.H.S. I must thank my assistont editor, Susanne Brown, for everything she's worked on. You were always there when I needed you. The art work in this book was challenging, and I would like to congratulate my art editor, Billy Good-speed for a fine job. How can you hove a book without literory work? Impossible. I have to thank Tom Cangelosi, my Literary Editor for all the time he spent on the write-ups and lost minute assignments. A yearbook con't be created if there is no money to support it. This is where my business monoger, Marigroce Rocioppt come in. She did a fontostic job of seeing that we hod the finonces settled. Along with a lot of literory work there is a lot of typing. I would like to thank Liz Loskowski, the typing editor for her many hours of work. So many of our memories are preserved in pictures. Photogrophy editor, Chris Zubelik, did a terrific tob of getting this fine collection for us. I don't know where to even begin to thank the odvisor of this whole protect Mr. Honig. You were always there when we needed you ond I will never forget the problems you brought us through. Words just con't express the appreciation for your interest ond enthusiasm. To all of you I give my heartfelt THANKSI You've all made this yearbook possible.
