New York 11518. Credits go to the Senior Class, the .ESTOF 1975 Yearbooks don’t just pop out of anywhere. They have to be created. To be created, and pulled together in an original manner, they must have a theme. LIFE. Sounds easy to think of, doesn’t it? Not to our editorial staff, it didn’t. The eight of us fought continuously through those hot summer night meetings trying to agree on a theme. Finally, the theme was picked, but that was just the beginning. The arguments were over, but new problems arose. What about the cover? How many pages should we allow for sports? When is the first deadline? There were plenty of questions, but not enough answers. That’s where Mr. Honig, our invaluable advisor, came in. He patiently answered our questions, calmed our feelings of inexperience, and literally got us going. If not for his initial push, this book would never have gotten off the ground. Mr. Honig’s job as an advisor was just that — he advised us. When you actually came down to it, the book was left entirely to us. This yearbook was not the work of just one person. Luck was with us all the way and we were fortunate enough to have a class who cared. It was a result of almost Va of the class, involved in one way or another, working together. But credit must go where credit is due. Behind all the work stood competent editors, pushing their staffs until the work was done, sacrificing and utilizing their time, ability, and even some sleep to meet the deadlines. We have Stephanie Bcnning and Janinc Frerk to thank for our beautiful and well-done literary work. A huge amount of credit must go to Heidi Hofmann, our An Editor, who put together the beautiful artwork throughout the book, and to Janice Cartmell, our Typing Editor, who almost always received a rush order to be done that day. Excellent photography speaks for itself. If not for our Photography Editor, Gerard Grcmsc, it would have been hard to come by. The business end of the book was kept up superbly by our Business Manager, Carolyn Stanganelli. Special thanks goes to my Assistant Editor, Robin Williams. She was always there when I needed her, whether it was for doing lay-outs, or just doing all those small jobs that needed to be done. To all these people I say thank you for your devoted effort. Enjoy life; it’s worth living. Emily Lemer Editor-in-Chief LIFE What is life? Is life just the course or mode of existence, or is it a flower, a newborn baby, a beating heart, or something else you associate with things that are alive? There is no formal answer. Life means something different to each individual, but we all know that without it we would not exist. Another thing we realize is that life is not simple anymore. Mixed within the happiness and joys of living are also the times of sadness and disappointment. Our lives at East Rockaway High School have included all these emotions. As a class we have experienced defeat, success, glory, and accomplishment. We worked together as one to achieve the goals and ideals we set for ourselves. When we graduate, the memories of the past six years will stay with us. It is with these words that the Senior class presents the Best of 1975. Life Is Just a Bowl of Cherries — But Watch Out for the Pits. 10 SPECIAL THANKS Mrs. Howard To Mrs. Howard — the lady who put it all together. For many years now, Mrs. Howard has been directing the Senior Play without receiving much of the credit entitled to her. We, the Senior Class, wish to thank her and make others aware that she was the guiding force behind the curtains that made this year’s Senior Play possible. Mr. Honig Eight editors without a concerned advisor does not a great yearbook make! Yes, we must truly thank Mr. Gerald Honig for all the dedication and interest he has provided us within the past year. With his help we were able to mold our life” into an experience we will never forget. In the years ahead when we flip through these precious pages we will remember the hard and devoted work Mr. Honig contributed to our yearbook. 12 P.T.A SITTING. left to right Mrs Sue Vito (2nd Vice Prcs dcnt). Mrs Barbara Stem (Corresponding Secretary). Mrs Cora Doherty i President). Mrs Barbara Goodspced (Historian) STANDING, left to right Mrs Mary Ann Kaminskas (Recording Secretary). Mr Edward Crowley (1st Vice President). Mrs Barbara Schaefer (Treasurer) DADS'CLUB Working behind the school scenes, the Parent-Teachers Association of East Rockaway has spiritedly dedicated their efforts to the good of the community. Without this noteworthy organization, scholarships. Blood Banks, and Rock Rivalry journals would probably be nonexistent. This year, like others before it, was extremely successful and we thank all the members for their fine work. If one were to make a list of activities which the Dad’s Club contributed time or money to, every aspect of the school and community would be included. In addition to the sponsoring of annual sports award dinners and spectator buses, the Dad’s Club has built the very appreciated observation tower. As Seniors we recognize the valuable services they have provided for our school and we gratefully thank them. DAD'S CLUB (left to right) Mr Richard Wethcrcll (Secretary). Mr Roger Humes (Vice-Pres.). Mr Fred Barth (Pres.). Mr Harold Lotd (Treasurer) 13 Let l Dear Mr. Cosenza. Time has passed by quickly. Just four short years ago we sat in the auditorium, raised our hands, and chose you as our class advisor. We needed someone we could look up to, yet still know as a friend. We have come to realize that we found this person in you. As a pan of our class you have experienced our downfalls and defeats and offered us guidance when necessary. You were never too busy to assist us or listen to our problems. Through your friendship we have discovered the amount of concern and patience one man can have for so many people. During the course of our six years here, you have given us much to look back on. In return, we would like to dedicate LIFE to you, for you have been a very imponant pan of our lives. Thank you Mr. C . . for everything. With love. The Class of 1975 Let us 17 MR. ROBERT MORSE PRINCIPAL The Best of Life undoubtedly includes the best leader, our principal, Mr. Morse. Concerned about the student body, he devotes his time to questions that need answers and problems that need attention. As a result of his openness and interest together with his concern and a smile, Mr. Morse has become a number one leader as well as a friend. MR. HENRY FREUND ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL In his third year as Assistant Principal, Mr. Freund has proven that his personality and ability arc a successful combination in winning the support of the students. An efficient worker, Mr. Freund has handled student and educational problems smoothly and quickly. We pride ourselves in knowing we have such a competent man belonging to the administration. MR. EDWARD CROWLEY DEAN OF STUDENTS Dean of Students is a title which carries a heavy burden of work and responsibility. Once again this year, Mr. Crowley has handled student problems by maintaining order with understanding, open mindedness, and tolerance. An outgoing and friendly person, Mr. Crowley has succeeded in gaining the respect of the student body through his devotion to the students and their problems. J QCKAWAY htch cr East Rockaway High School East Rockaway, New York 11518 As we approach the mid-point of this decade our country is still struggling with the aftermath of Watergate, stagflation. and increased crime rates. Everyone seems to have an opinion, if not a solution, to all of our problems. In the final analysis it will bc you. the young people of America who will determine if we really learned anything from Watergate. It will lx- your task to stabilize our economic system. Only you can make our streets free from violence. I have great faith in the Class of '75. You have proven to be an exceptional class. You have contributed much to the oualitv of school life by your accomplishments in the classroom, on our athletic fields, in an. journalism and our musical productions. You have demonstrated concern for others by your support of the March of Dimes. Honduran relief and Cerebral Palsy research. I am confident that you will continue your involvement in improving your community, your country- and yourselves. Gotxl luck to all of you. Sincerely. RDM:mb Robert D. Morse Principal Many feel that the office of Superintendent of Schools is a position of nomenclature, a desk job. Don’t be fooled, however. The office entails far more responsibility, hard work, and tedious hours than most other jobs. Dr. William K. Louis has filled this seat for many years in East Rockaway and continues to do a superb job. He is a leader, a man with honor, and one for which we hold incomparable respect. He has kept this school alive and running for our brief stay and undoubtedly will continue his competent work for years to come. Although Dr. Louis may not always be found in the hallways of East Rockaway High School, we, the class of 75, know he’s there, making our school work for us. BOARD OF EDUCATION Somewhere along the road of education there must be a connection between the school and community. The five member board of education acts as this link serving as East Rockaway’s volunteer mini government. Although their hours of continuous work may go unnoticed, the results of their efforts are clearly evident. SITTING (left to right) Mr. Carol Leahy, Mr Earl Cole. Mr Harrv Bunting — President. The tone was reticent, with little talking, except for a few mumbles about the upcoming game plan. The boys separated into the offensive and defensive busses, as the coaches followed, clipboards in hand, their minds obviously fixed on things other than the present. And so begins a Saturday dunng football season The build-up of emotions is evident as close friends are distinctively silent and concentration is seen deep in the players eyes. As the bus pulls into the opponent's school there is a nervous undertone among them. It’s early yet and they still have to finish putting on their pads and taping themselves up Into the locker room they go, remaining suspiciously quia; a feeling of anticipation and hidden excitement lining the faces. At last it’s almost time, the final preparations are taken care of and now this stifled emotion begins to la loose. The coaches make thar last second recommendations and suggestions, wish the boys luck, and finally they burst out of the doors and onto the field, shouting and shoving one another, getting ready to hit. The game has begun The coin toss is ours and we’re going to accept the opening kickoff The run back is short and on comes the offensive unit, supported by the coarse shouting of the benched players. A short drive is ended and the game turns into a defensive battle. The hitting is hard and there are athlaes continuously coming off the field bloody and hurt, the mixture of sweat and din burning thar cuts. For two hours, four full quarters, they struggle. fight, and force themselves to keep going but all in vain, the game is lost Some of the sweat begins to turn to despondent tears and, silently, as they came, they pile onto the bus. It’s dark now and the long tnp home is trying. Each playa feels his own responsibility for the loss and each is hurt, both physically and mentally. As they pull onto the parking field, no happy crowds are there greamg them. No young fans wanting to see them. As the bus empties out, one by one a player turns to his comrade. Captain Captain BOWLING — A Championship Season . . . In the midst of : the turmoil -id confusion of Hast Rockaway's sports program this year, there was one distinct, bright sjx t which shined through the clouds of disappointment. The Rock Bowling Team set more records in their Division 111 competition than the books could hold as they continuously hit the alleys with precision playing. Peter Carroll, the captain and most outstanding athlete in the bowling department, was the FIRST person in the history of Hast Rockaway to ever compete in the Albany State Playoffs. Other seniors, who helped make the team one to remember, were Ed Rose, Paul Puchelt. and Rich Ong, all of whom placed near the top of the League with high individual averages. They played together, let! by the invincible HXP. carefully ANNIHILATING their opponents. Bowling has long been one of the most followed of Rock” sports. Although it fails to carry the spectator vacuum as docs football, basketball, etc., they’ have never failed to put together a fine team. Perhaps this 73 season will help to enlighten the student body as to which is the sport to watch. The class of 1973 leaves bowling as their athletic standout. The girls were coached by Ms. Kunz and assisting her were the team’s co-captains, Diane Finnis and Anne Campbell. The 1975 basketball season was a tough one for the Rocks. In Viking times, the question was Can women hold a place in a man’s world and vice-versa?” Tonight the Class of 77 will try to answer this question. Wc will try to reveal what the history books hold secret: Who really is the weaker of the sexes? Last year we gained valuable knowledge through our Rock Rivalry experiences, which knowledge we are applying today. We would like to thank our overall chairmen, Barry Akrongold and Sarah Wipfler. for their untiring efforts in creating a successful Rock Rivalry presentation. Entrance chairmen, Toni Cicerelli and Larry Pecorella, have contributed their talents towards making this performance a memorable one. Thank you all. Tonight the Class of ’76 will re-create this era from a mcxlern perspective. In the past two years Rcxk Rivalry has been a learning experience. This year, as Juniors, we have discovered the true meaning of Rcxk Rivalry. ’Working together’ is no longer a hypocritical cliche, but a creed in which everyone earnestly believes, countless sincere friendships stem from our 1975 Rock Rivalry efforts. Many thanks to our dauntless entrance chairmen. Linda Correnti and Mark Miller, and to our overall chairmen. Barbara Ianniello and John Francis, who really kept us all together. The gratitude we have for Mr Me Anulla. our guiding light, can only be expressed through our enthusiasm and love. We hope that every class has enjoyed their Rcxk Rivalry as much as we have ours Ckxxl luck to all — especially to our sister class, the Freshmen, as they premiere in Rcxk Rivalry. Sit back, relax and travel with the Class of 1975 to the land of Kweiyang, located in the beautiful Far East, sometime in the 19th Century. The Far East has always been a beautiful land of delicate an, and mysterious history. Tonight is no different. The venerable war lord Shan has decided that the time has come to marry off his daughters. The two most honorable suitors in Kweiyang are brought before Shan. He sets a task for these two men which will test their skill and bravery. The task is to journey to the land of the neighboring enemy war lord and bring back his award. Each suitor has a choice between Shan’s three strongest warriors or his famous magicians. to aid him in his journey. The winner will be awarded the hand of Shan’s daughter in marriage. But ancient proverb teaches: All things rarely go as planned.” At this time we would like to thank Tom Doherty and Ann Wipfler. our overall chairmen, for their leadership and hard w'ork during these past six weeks. We also owe a big thanks to our entrance chairmen, Ellen Coulon and Ed Power, who made tonight’s production for you to view. In gratitude for your patience we extend our thanks to all those parents who put up with us for four exciting and memorable years. To Mr. Coscnza, we send a thank you of appreciation for all the times you’ve been there when we needed you. Lastly, the Class of 1975 would like to wish the best of luck to all the classes involved in Rock Rivalry, now- and in years to come, especially our talented sister class, the Sophomores . . . It will always have a place in OUR hearts, for Rock Rivalry is a delicious piece of LIFE. Now we will share our past four years with you, as we remember our struggles and disappointments, our hopes, dreams, high spirits and our failures and . . . achievements. Remember our freshman year? It was All in the Mind. As senior citizens trying to regain our youth, we hobbled on stage, weary from our first year’s struggles but excited over our new involvement in class competition. That year represented a gtxxl start when we wron third place in entrance. But our other standings limited us to fourth place over-all. With six weeks worth of experience, we entered our Sophomore year with high hopes in Summit Surprise. Travelling back to the era of the Transcontinental Railroad we hit on problems w ith Man Sue and her brothers. The mean McCormick boys who were after their father’s gold came to Protectory Summit lcjoking for it and caused quite a whoop-di-doo until Deputy D(x Da and the sheriff straightened things out. Another third place left us down but determined to try harder, when jour Junior year found us in Holy, the Monks’ Mistake When (’zar;NidioIaylm give up his throne to a younger man wort fry ro rule the land, both his son and Rasputin, the czar’s roval advisor, appeared to be good possibilities. Confident of our efforts, we our other talented class members w m a first place entrance for us 1971 and a lot of 5Hth Annual R xk Rivalry As seniors we were as ecstatic as ever when R xk Rivalry rolled around. Know ing it on Rock Rivalry history, we let our imaginations run wild. They ran to the Far East, to a country we called Kweivang. Our w arlord Shan thought it time tb give his daughter’s hand in marriage. So a task was set up for the two most noble suitors w hich would test their worthiness and valor.
