Dedication In the true sense of the word, our high school career began as Sophomores. I he loss of Mr. Fisher, our freshman class advisor, w'as a serious blow at the time, but in stepped Mr. Lander to fill the “ruby slippers’’ left vacant by Mr. fisher. In all candor, we did not feel that anyone could fill the shoes, but to our surprise and delight, Mr. Lander provided the counsel, leadership, and inspiration that we so sorely needed. Leading our class through times of happiness and times of sorrow, he has been like an Aunt Em and an Uncle Henry to us, teaching, comforting and always there to count on. It is in this spirit that we dedicated the 1972 ROCK to him, not just as a class advisor, but as a true and dedicated friend. Sincerely, The Class of 1972 4 Once upon a time, there lived a young girl named Dorothy, who was known to all her friends as the Class of 72. One day, little Dorothy was walking home from elementary school. Suddenly, a gust of wind blew in from the north; it was a tornado! Terrified, our little heroine ran for cover, but, alas, it was too late! Swept off her feet, Dorothy became airborne — caught in the whirling, whistling, workings of the w ind. Seconds, or maybe days later, Dorothy fell from the sky and found herself in a place, (you guessed it), “ ... somewhere over the rainbow.” Gazing about in awe, our little Miss '72 realized she was not in elementary school any longer. This must be the place she had always dreamed about — a place where you can’t get into any trouble?! As the sun set, the rainbow-colored sky melted into shades of orange and black, revealing the image of a high school, bearing an uncanny resemblance to the Land of Oz! There beneath her feet lay a yellowbrick road, a path irresistably leading her towards an Emerald City, and just beyond, the magic of graduation. She knew she must follow; the fickle finger of fate had pointed the way for our “Darling Daughter of Destiny!” Thank You Mr. Fisher The beginning of our freshman year was filled with apprehension and mixed emotions. We were boys and girls faced suddenly w ith the prospect of becoming men and women. We needed a firm, guiding hand, and found it in the person of Mr Fisher Despite his brief tenure, Mr. Fisher showed us how to fight and work for what we wanted and what we thought was right. These concepts, which will receive their severest test as we leave Oz and move on to En rald City, are our backbones for lifejR! On behalf of all of Us, we wish to express our gratitr dl and appreciation for all his efforts and consideration. Louis Administrative Insights What exactly is your new job this year? ‘ It's a little bit of everything. I’m known as the Assistant Principal, instead of Pupil Personnel Director. I consider myself the “First Sergeant in the Army.” In the administration of any complex organization, such as that of East Rockaway High School, the passing of the buck must stop somewhere, and in the words of Dr. William k. Louis, “It stops with me. It would be presumptuous of us to attempt to list ali of the qualifications and accomplishments of our superintendent. Instead, we prefer to view Dr. Louis from the standpoint of our social and professional contacts with him. From personal experiences, we can state unequivocably, that he is a warm, friendly human being, whose door is always open to those who need him. His wise and patient advice has also enabled us to avoid some of the pitfalls and mistakes of high school students. We hope that our successors w ill have an opportunity to meet and work with Dr. Louis, the man, as well as the administrator. We are sure it will be a rewarding and enlightening experience. How about the new pass fail system? Great! However, what a child needs is a push, especially for a subject pertaining to life. But as far as an elective goes, it should be pass or fail.” What do you think of small schools? “1 love small schools. Students have the opportunity to really get to know their advisors and teachers.” How do the students of today compare with those of twenty-five years ago? “I find today’s students much brighter and more concerned. They’re also more honest. However, I feel they’re hurting themselves in appearance. I would like them to leave the school with the ability to do well and become successful. Their dress might hurt their chances in the future.” Mr. Henry Freund Our interviews also brought us to the office of the new Dean of Students, Mr. Edward Crowley. We found a man happy with his administrative work and one who enjoys making decisions. No changes in dicipline policy are forseen, unless problems arise. Mr. Crow ley is constantly looking for new ideas. He feels the pass fail courses are great innovations, but is disappointed with the results of computer program scheduling. Looking back on his old pasition as head of the social studies department, Mr. Crowley finds that he misses teaching. He hopes that someday he will have time as Dean of Students to return to the classroom. Thanks for the on-the-spot interview-, Mr. Crow ley, and the best of luck in your new office. Honors were bestowed upon her from every society, all leading to that final day in Emerald City. On the road to Oz, Dorothy also spotted that memorable man of metal, the Tinman. Dorothy realized deep inside, that a person with brains and know ledge w as useless if he were not appreciated and loved by others. Easter than a heart beat, our Daughter of Destiny joined societies of phila philan . good deed doers! She even took to playing an instrument, singing, writing, and even visiting the great masters of the arts themselves. How could anyone resist loving Dorothy now? Even the Tinman w as so happy, that he cried and rusted himself again! Of course our girl was there w ith the oil can. Dorothy was soon to meet the last, but not least of her unforgettable friends; the Lion. He boldly roared that infamous kinglv line, If I only had some courage. JUNIOR 131 A WISE WORD FROM THE WIZARD MR ROBERT MORSE The yellowbrick road to Oz had been a long and hard one. Obstacles threatened Dorothy every step of the way. But wicked witch or no wicked witch, our little heroine finally reached the last yellow brick on the road. With a leap, she landed in the heart of gleaming Emerald City. This was all very nice indeed, but how could it compare w ith the news that the One and Only Wizard of Oz had just arrived! Our little girl was speechless as the Wizard himself, the honorable Robert D Morse, rose to officially welcome her to Oz. To top it off, the First Man of Oz. personally congratulated Dorothy on the successful completion of her journey. The Wizard reminded Dorothy she must now begin a new life in the land of E. Pluri-bus L'num. The excitement was almost too much for our Daughter of 72, but the Wizard’s inspiring words rang out in her heart, clear as a bell! At that moment, Dorothy realized that Mr Morse was a truly good man and a truly good Wizard. As one of them said, Something has happened to America. It is too early to say whether this happening is for good or bad. You young people are going to determine the outcome. During the last decade America has gone through a period of self-examination. The so-called younger generation has played a key role in this effort. Traditional values are often challenged end found wanting. As a result, new systems and approaches to old problems are being tried. What new value system will evolve? It seems to me that it will be one where we'll understand that with freedom come responsibility and restraint. We'll find that blacks and whites, peace marchers and hard hats, parents and children, students and teachers, can live and work together to make our country reach its potential.
