We have been scholars, athletes, artists, craftsmen, and leaders in all fields. In this our yearbook, THE ROCK '55,', we will show how our members have participated in student affairs. Leaving our school means that we will transfer our abilities from the student world we know to the world for which we have been trained. Some of us will pursue the interests that we have developed while at East Rockaway, while others will seek new fields and broader horizons. Many of our boys will go on to serve our country in the Armed Forces. Other classmates will begin higher learning at far-flung colleges and universities. And still others will make their way in the business world. But wherever and whenever the Gods again unite our class, we know that we will have done our best to find our places in this World. Bormann , . As the end of our stay at East Rockaway High draws near there are many things we have already forgotten, but there are many things we will always remember. Prominent among these are our two friends, Dr. Henry H. Bormann and Mr. Luther H. Kirsch. We shall try to forget the various visits to Dr. Bormann's office-for dis- ciplinary measures, but we shall long remember his understanding and sage advice. We shall often recall his warm friendship and generous support. 6 P Uiliil-lilfi'iY Mr. Luther Kirsch Mr. Kirsch will be remembered for numerous reasons. Some of the boys will remember him as a sports coach. And who could forget his Friday words! ll Others of us will recall gruelling rehearsals of Lost Horizon, and the fun we had with This ls Your Strife, Mr. Kirsch. All will admire and respect his philosophy of brotherly love and understanding. Both these men have proved their friendship toward us and in recognition of this we affectionately dedicate our yearbook, THE ROCK 1955, to them. 7 H U EH Our Editors-in-Chief Nancy Haynes and Eric Wessman have worked diligently to produce the best yearbook possible. We shall always be grateful for their untiring efforts to attain our hnal goal in high school. A The unsellish endeavors of the Literary Staff proved to be one of the main factors in the success of the 1955 ROCK. Maureen Sutherland, Patricia Pick, and Alva Tripp, the literary Co-Editors, and their stall consisting of David Thomas, Adrienne Coe, Maria Sepcich, and Myra Siegel devoted a great deal of their time and energy to the Write-ups in this, our greatest achievement of our high school career. Q i gi. The combined talents of the class artists, Joan Malmquist, Eric Wessman, and Barbara Bogutzski, made possible the beautiful artwork of our Yearbook. Parallel to the Art Staffs paper and paste work is the magnificent photographic art arranged by the editors of the Photography Staff, David Thomas and Leon Harris. ST FF Of course we owe much thanks to our Typing Staff, headed by Mary jane Scott. Their nimble fingers worked diligently to complete the necessary and important type-work of the Literary Staff and prepared it for our printers. One staff deserves the deepest gratitude of the whole class. They are the Business Stahf and their editors, William Campbell and Mary Jane Scott. It was their job to raise the vast finance needed to produce our ROCK, 1955. V 3 - . r ' f 15 i A, J o--ff' Z, Your Editors and Senior Class wish to express their sincere gratitude to Mr. john Ruckdeschel as Faculty Adviser and Business Manager and Mr. Douglas Sackman assisting as Literary Adviser, Mr. James Carnrite as Photography Adviser, and Mrs. Ida Shi- mans as Art Adviser. 9 lr 4 ...SMA . Some are born into office, some assume position by force. Like our own national government, our Board of Education is elected by the people. Our Board provides the community with adequate, well-equipped build- ings, trained leaders such as Dr. Studwell and Dr. Bormann, friendly and trust- ing teachers and many other services which are greatly appreciated by a trusting community. The members of the Board are: Robert Pape, President, Dr. Anthony A. Scimeca, Vice President, Nathanial Mott, Clerk, and Hillyard A. Procter, Treasurer. Other members are: Harry W. Bunting, Frederick W. Klocke and Edmund D. Smith. P.-T. A .... One of the more important organizations in our school is the Parent-Teachers Association. At their meeting better relationships between our parents and the faculty are achieved. They work together to give the students scholarships and many other gifts that are greatly appreciated. They also work for a better understanding of the students and their prob- lems through their numerous debates and discussions. As an organization dedi- cated to help and understanding, the P.-T. A. is highly respected. - 1 5 f M' I KITCHEN STAFF . . . under the direction of Mrs. Lass, has provided well-balanced meals in our cafeteria. Their skill is responsible for the good food that makes everyone happy at lunch- time. f ydiidw OFFICE STAFF . . . largely responsible for the smooth running efficiency of our school is our competent office staff, consisting of Miss Schemp, Mrs. Sullivan, and Miss Settele. At the top is an elite group known as the Arista, the best, the finest personifications of moral, mental, and spiritual perfection. The National Honor Society is one of these elite groups. Its members personify the qualities of Character, Scholarship, Leadership, and Service, which are the foundation of our World honor system. It is no wonder that so many Seniors: Ethel Formont, Nancy Haynes, Noreen Curtis, Patricia Pick, Maureen Sutherland, Mary Jane Scott, and Alva Tripp, are prominent members of the National Honor Society. They will leave East Rockaway to become the leaders of tomorrow. MATH HONOR SOCIETY . . . The Math Honor Society was formed to main- tain high standards of education and to sustain an interest in mathematics. There are many phases of mathematics, all of which cannot be mastered during four short years in high school. However, this society has succeeded in attaining the highest possible level of interest and study. Many have achieved the criterion set up by the Society. Those Seniors active in the Society are: Myra Siegel, Carol Ryder, Maureen Sutherland, Jay Greenblatt, Bruce Morris, John Cartmell, Daniel Freyer, Pat Pick, Adrienne Coe, Alva Tripp, President. l7 ft!!-L THE GULL . . . All the news that's fit to print, Where there is no light, the people perish, Seek and it shall be written, if written, it shall be truth - these are the rnottoes of some of the nation's great newspapers, which bring the news of the world to the people. Here in East Rockaway, the GULL is our newspaper. We, too, have our reporters, columnists and commentators who form the GULL staff. Headed by Anthony Baroni as Editor-in-Chief, the GULL is assisted literary-wise by Miss Martha Lorenz and the adviser of the typewriter is Mrs. Isabel Hefele. Our Seniors on the GULL staff are: Mary Jane Scott, Assistant Editor, Patricia Pick, Business Manager, Noreen Curtis and Barbara Doolittle, Co- typing Editors. Adrienne Coe's Exchange Deskf' Scottie's Disc 'n Data, Ross Esch's Sportscasting,', and Maureen Sutherlands Skirting the Eieldu have been hu- morous, prophetic, and always interesting, to say nothing of the special interest reports by Bob Parker and Dave Thomas. Parliaments, Congresses, Assemblies, Councils- these are representative bodies of the people and the peoplels will. They are the debaters, the law-makers, the guiding hands of the great World machine called Government. What better way is there to prepare to face this responsibility of self- government than through its counterpart, our own Student Council. Here, under the leadership of Seniors, Carole Niddrie, President, Maria Sepcich, Leon Harris, and Steve Miller, the Student, Council discusses the problems of the Student Body in a democratic fashion, and seeks to improve the position of the students in the school. 5 umemv funn- P Q., Q ..... . iff Q H 1 aim 557 gf f M X nu 7f-AZ,-5 y SERVICE SQUAD . . . It is international in scope, having chapters all over the world, sponsored by the Y. M. C. A. World Service program. As its purpose clearly states, Hi-Y is built around the idea of service to the school, church, and community. Under the competent guidance of Mrs. Dorothy Meske, the members of the Hi-Y have displayed this idea by sponsoring a very successful Sadie Hawkins Dance and by preparing baskets of food for needy families. At Christmas time they help to promote the Yuletide spirit by decorating the classrooms and the foyer. The Hi-Y officers are: Maria Sepcich, Presidentg Nancy Haynes, Vice- presidentg Patricia Gregory, Secretary, and Joan Malmquist, Chaplain. MODERN MISS . . . This club functions under the capable instruction of Mrs. Frederick Hoppen. Affiliated with the Future Homemakers of America, its purpose is to advance girls in needlework, cooking, and other domestic skills. For years the mispronunciation of such well- known French phrases as Parlez-vous francaise? has been the password dis- tinguishing French students. However, at French Club meetings Mrs. Dorothy Meske has endeavored to teach the members how to speak French more fluently and with less self-consciousness. French ofhcials may change, but the French Club's have remained the same this year. Robert Parker is President, Maureen Sutherland, Vice-president, Adrienne Coe, Secretary, David Thomas, Treasurer. ' 2 2 :W ' WA T EL CIRCULO ESPANOL . . . Como esta usted? Hola! These are only a few of the greetings heard at meetings of the Spanish Club. Formed to promote an interest in the Spanish language and culture extending beyond the classroom. The members of the Spanish Club sing songs and learn Spanish dances. Through the outside contact with the language and Spanish-speaking coun- tries, Spanish students have learned that there is more to a language than the grammar and the verb conjugations. There is a great deal of culture which may help each person later on in his life. Seniors active in this club are: Patricia Pick, Philip Schlesier, and Maria Sepcich. LIBRARY COUNCIL . . . This hard working group, organized to assist Miss Agnes Hickman, its director, is the secret behind the efficiency of the library. The members are taught the essentials of keeping the library running smoothly. Whether it's checking out and returning books or seeing that the library is ap- propriately decorated, the Council members are always prepared. Wherever there are people, there is a point of view, a discussion, a debate. Throughout the world, people discuss almost anything that ever happens. We too, discuss the affairs of living, both on the national and international scale, and in our everyday lives, at our Discussion Club meetings. Bob Donofrio and Mary Mayr, part of the battling forces of this club, have aided and led many discussions on such matters as Segregation in the South, Teen-age Problems, and Rock Rivalry, Good or Bad. Though no solutions are reached at the meetings, the experience of formulating and expressing opinions and ideas shall prove very helpful as we go and take an active part in the affairs of the World. PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB . . . Photography plays an important part in our everyday life, not only as an industry but also as a hobby. The Photography Club, under the capable direction of Mr. Francis Hen-' rich, furthers photography as a hobby. The members, Louis Shadolf, President, Robert Mulholland, Eugene Kellerman, Robert Kuhnle and Alva Tripp, are interested in learning more about the heavens rather than merely taking someone else's word for it. F2 ' QA yrs ia 25 l S SINGERS , . . In the early 1400's madrigal singing was first originated by fami- lies who, for relaxation and entertainment, would sing songs around their din- ner tables. This style of singing, which is done by intimate groups, has been carried through the years to the present day. The Singers,', under the direction of Mr. Henry Fordham, is a group which continues the practice of madrigal singing, along with many other types of songs. The Singers do a great deal of good-will work for the school by singing in various programs put on by organizations and clubs in other schools and in communities throughout the Island. They also per- form in the annual concerts at East Rockaway, and compete in the New York State School Music As- sociation's competitions where they have received many excellent awards. The members of the Singersl' are: Myra Siegel, Martha Mitchel, Dorothy Hutchinson, Alva Tripp, Benjamin Caine, Robert Fordham, Carol Niddrie Elaine Reuter, Patricia Gregory, Albert Campbell john Lowe, and Edward Dessart. 7 7 - ' ' t J fl ,f 1 , ,f K nf ,, It Mr. Henry Fordham l 26 ' f l 7 1 CHORUS . . . As basketball players enjoy working together on a team, people also enjoy singing together. The same principles of teamwork that apply to basketball or to any other sport are the basic concepts of choral work. Every individual in a chorus must work with the fellow members of his section and with the entire chorus as well, in order to achieve a desired effect. The Chorus, under the experienced hand of Mr. Henry Fordham, puts on an operetta each year. This year they presented Gilbert and Sullivan's Pirates of Penzancef' The annual concerts given by the music department feature the Chorus as one of their main parts, and in recent years the Chorus has re- ceived top honors at the New York State School Music Associationls Annual Competitions. Mrs. Leona lsuksen 27 Hirniva nf Milhvrt On November 4 and 5 the High School Chorus presented its annual operetta under the direction of Mr. Henry Fordham. A fine accompaniment was provided by Mrs. Leone Isaksen, pianist, and Mrs. Charlotte Rogers, organist. East Rockaway High School places music as an important part of edu- cation. Therefore, it is not surprising that the strains of a robust march by J. P. The East Rockaway High School Band, under the baton of Mr. james Carnrite, plays at football games, assemblies, the annual concerts, and also competes in the New York State School Music Association's annual contests. Among the key members of this fine organization are Seniors Adrienne Coe, Dick Formont, Jack Lowe, Carole Niddrie, Maureen Sutherland, Alva Tripp, and Edward Wright. HIJIIHS Rugby, lacrosse, soccer-no matter what the name, are all in some form or other, like that rugged American sport, football. This season, under the direction of Coach Freund, the Rocks had a victorious campaign. The Orange and Blackf' realizing they lacked depth in their team, developed speedily, and with a few added recruits to the veteran team of last year, finished with an impressive record of four wins and three losses. Not only was team effort, unity, and many days of gruelling practice needed to make it a winning season, but also we needed the quality of leadership. This quality was demonstrated by the team's co-captains, Donal Bruce and Al Campbell. 42 J- .lui Donal Deemie Bruce gave the rest of the team their defensive and decisive offensive sig- nals from which many touchdown plays were unraveled. Deemie, the running whiz in the backfield, led his teammates in points scored and yards gained. He ran neck and neck all year for the highest scorer crown in Nassau County. At the close of the season Deemie proved a credit to his school and his class by receiving honorable mention in Newsdayls All- Scholastic Football Squad. Al glue-fingers Campbell was one of East Rockaway's best defensive threats all season long, filling the position at right end most ade- quately. Al received his nickname from the rest of his teammates for catching those almost in- accessible passes. ff, 5 il' SW One of the biggest assets this year to the Rocks was the strength of their line, which averaged 190 pounds. One of the heaviest and most versatile linemen was Larry Moose Del- ler, who constantly spearheaded the Rocks of- fensive and defensive plays. Larry himself, who weighed a mere 217 lbs, played a prominent role that he and the team will never forget when he took down three men at once in one of the Rocks' biggest goal line stands in years. The victims were St. Agnes, who at that time were losing by six points in the last remaining minutes of the last quarter. They moved the ball to East Rockaway's one yard line on an in- terception play. Spectators were jubilant when they witnessed the Rocks stop St. Agnes dead in their tracks after they tried four line plunges to obtain that needed tie-breaking touchdown. The Rocks had some tough breaks in their first few games but showed they had the spirit to win and the will to fight back, as seen in many of their games. 'll S Varsit Basketball This year East Rockaway's Basketball Team copped well deserved second place honors in SSAL Section III Basketball. Coached by Mr. George Faulkner, the team got off to a flying start by winning all their pre-season contests. The Rocks worked well together throughout the season, utilizing a 2-1-2 zone de- fense and a fast breaking offense. A few key players in their attacks were Donald Rodrigues, Richard Jacobsen and Stanley Muller. Stan Kangaroo Kid Muller, with his height and rebounding ability, was a bulwark under both boards. Dick Jacobsen, with his ball hawking and his deadly outside set shooting, was always a constant threat to opposing teams. A speedy and hustling ball player was found in Don Rodrigues, who was on the Varsity Team for three years. Don, for a little guy, also did a good share of rebounding. He was all over the court and will always be remembered for his deceptive fakes and passes. Able coaching and good team spirit added up to the most successful basketball season in East Rockaway's history with a record of fifteen wins and three losses. 46 Deemie Bruce goes up for a shot with cl Sea Cliff ployer covering him. Al Campbell goes in for Q lay-up as a Sea Clif? mon tries To stop him, 47 Where did it go? Al Campbell of East Rockaway is wondering what happened to the ball in a game againsi Oceanside. Coach George Faulkner hopes that they will be able to take up where this year's Var- sity Team left off, and replace the seven graduating Varsity members. THE FROSH BASKETBALL TEAM . . . under the careful coaching of Mr. Freund also had a fine season. They exhibited a keen will to learn various shots and plays and how to work as a team, which are two of the most most im- portant factors in building a better team for the future. 49 . The East Rockaway nine, coached by Mr. M. Douglas Sack- man, displayed fine ability and spirit throughout the season. A good club will always have a few utility men who can play many positions equally well. With most of last year's lettermen returning to the team, and supported by a few promising newcomers, East Rockaway had such a bench this spring. The Badminton Honor Team has an excellent record as does the Class Team. The number of wins far overshadows the small number of losses. This year's Honor Team had many good players, a lot of team-work, and therefore an outstanding team. The most common expressions heard around the volleyball court were double-tap and hit it to the front row. Under the able direction of Miss Eileen McCord, the Honor Team won all its games, receiving practically no competition from any other school. GIRLS BASKETBALL . . . Because of a new ruling, the number of players on a team had to be cut down. Naturally this could prove to be a disadvantage to some schools, but it enabled East Rockaway's Honor Team to be the pick of the crop. The cooperative playing of Susan Morrison, jean Smillie, Patricia Pick, Mary Jane Scott, Anne Marie Bird, Maureen McGoldrick, Dorothy Stanwise, Catherine Bird and Patricia Uhl brought them a second place in the Honor Team play-offs. Carole Giardine, a member of the Women's Swimming Association Team of New York, has trium- phantly seized such high honors as Junior National One-Hundred Yard Breast Stroke Championship, and Senior Metropolitan Two- Hundred Yard Championship in five consecu- tive years. She has also set three Bermuda Swimming Records and today remains undefeated. Carole has to her credit sixteen championship titles, one hundred medals, and eighteen trophies, many of which are the highest in the nation. MIN EOLA FAIR This time for the first time the Industrial Arts department set up an exhibit at the Mineola Fair. Joe Miller built a hydro', which was the sensation of the school exhibits, and brought East Rockaway a first place ribbon for school exhibits. rummrmmmmmn ' P ' w ' A WL- M Q - x, If J .wy , Wgltml vi l ,K Q..
