n i H A new breed of Pioneers arose in 1968-69 and captured the HIL A Division Championship for the first time in the history of the school. lt was an impressive 10-1 record posted by the Pioneers this year and the best yet recorded under Head Coach Mack Franklin. As the season progressed, each game became increasingly vital if they were to win the title, and the team regarded each one as the most important game of the year. The Pioneer Machinel' marched through eight straight victories before tasting their first and only defeat at the hands of the Central High Purple Pounders. However, the loss to Central did not deter the Big Orange as they roared back with a substantial win over Soddy Daisy to give the Pioneers the A Division crown and an invitation to the Civic Bowl in Tullahoma, Tennessee. A bowl game victory and a team trip to the Gator Bowl in Jacksonville, Florida, ended the most successful and by far the most exciting year in football history at East Ridge. It was also a year of honor and recognition for the Orange-clad Pioneers. They found themselves ranked seventh in the state at one time, but finished fifteenth. Five Pioneers were named to the ALL-CITY Teamg seven were named to the ALL-HIL Teamg and two were spotlighted as State Linemen of the Week. 56 fLef2j CAPTAINS: Steve Jackson, Steve Bevilaqua . ' f
