ROTC With the opening of school, a new phase was added to the ever expanding programs and traditions of ERHS. The long awaited Reserve Officers Training corps began with l57 sophomore cadets under the leadership of Lt. Col. Benjamin Thompson and M. Sgt. Milton Jackson. The corps were quickly caught in the routine of army life with the cadets being taught military courtesies, apparel, and the handling of firearms. Flag presentation by the US. Marine Corps marked the first big ceremony bythe cadets. Before the student body the skills and marching techniques in which they had ' been trained were put to the test for the first time. i ln the spring came the first Federal Inspection with l officers from the Third Army Division present. The l cadets not only were questioned and tested individually. i but also passed in reviewm before the critical eyes of veteran soldiers. A highly successful first year was brought to a close with the promotion of Non-commissioned officers and the naming of Barth Loney as Cadet of the Year. It was revealed that the East Ridge Corps had been given the coveted Blue Star Rating for superior performance, making East Ridge the second school in the state ever to receive this rating during the first year of ROTC.
