N.E.C. Champs “Guys, this is how you play that new game, “Olney”. — Coach Hough The 1983-84 Varsity Tiger Basketball Team was rated an under- dog in the beginning of the season, but in the end it was different. The NEC Championship title was won by the Olnev Tigers. In a pre-season poll Olney was rated third in the NEC to Flora and Salem, respectively, first and second. Coach Ron Herrin was reluctant to say that he had the best team in the conference at the beginning; but now he can say it! Senior leadership from Pat Murray, Brian Ginder, Darrin Wheat, Bran- don W eems, and Jerry Lyon helped the team win the NEC. Juniors Doug Curtis, Philip Herman. Tom Kehrenbacher, Shannon Hough, and David llarting led the team in morale and off-the- bench scoring. Jon Quay le, Scott Timmons, Tony Ritter, and Tony Hough showed depth to the team by playing as sophomores. The toughest games for the Tigers in the NEC had to be against the Flora Wolves. At Flora, the Tigers lost the first battle by only a few points. But in the second meeting it was different. The Tigers Hey, I think that’s my ball!” — Phil Herman JUNIOR VARSITY — Row I; Todd Allen, James Sarks, Tony Hough. David Wiley, Shannon Hough, Derek McVaigh, Susumu Komiyama, Mike Baas. Row 2: Coach Leon Hough. Robert Payne, Tom Fehren- bacher. Jim I ughlin, Phil Herman, Scott Timmons, Tony Ritter, David Harting. showed their improvement by beating the Wolves by a good margin. The enthusiasm of the “bleacher bums” and the Tiger Boosters showed and was greatly appreciated by all of the Tigers at each game. Olney went into the Regionals ready to play. Beat- ing Mattoon in the opener, Olney faced Charleston in the finals. In the first contest with Charleston, Olney was victorious by only one point; so the game was expected to be a good one. And that it was! In the end C harleston pulled ahead of Olney in over- time. The JV team also had an impressive season going 15-3 overall. Coach Leon Hough was very satisfied with the record. He was very pleased with juniors Philip Herman, David Harting. Tom Fehrenbacher. and Shannon Hough. Sophomores Tony Ritter, Scott Timmons, and Tony Hough really helped out the team. Freshmen Mark Shan and Greg Garner rounded out the squad. The Freshmen A-Team went 14-4 while the B- 'I cam went 4-3. Coach Iairry Miller has high aspects for this freshmen team. Mark Shan. Greg Garner, Sean VanGundy, Don Parker, and Todd Bettis appear to be prospects for Coach Herrin on the varsity level. Overall, the Tiger varsity went 21-8 and in the conference they went 13-1. A great year in basket- ball for Olney with the NEC title back in Olney. JV 26 Boy’s Basketball
