The 1983 golf team had the most successful season of the last few years. Mr. Shafer experienced his first year as coach, and brought a new dimension to the team — win- ning. “With the caliber of underclass talent we have says Coach Shafer, “their potential is unlimited. Two NEC champions in the next three years is not just a goal, but should become a reality. The team carded a 5-9 record overall, but a 4-3 record in dual meets. The regular season was highlighted by victories over Lawrenceville, Fairfield, Mt. Carmel, and EfTingham. In post-season play, they finished fifth in the conference, but missed third place by only 10 strokes. Individually, Scott Salmon placed tenth overall with an 84. A twelfth place finish highlighted the regional. Fresh- man Sean VanGundy was the lowest in Mt Vernon with a 94. The optimism expressed by Coach Shafer carries through to the players. “We have a tremendous shot at the NEC and maybe even sectional, says Sean VanGundy. “Coach Shafer keeps us on our toes. Randy Harting, the number three golfer, adds, “This summer we will be working our hardest, and going to tour- naments to get fine tuned. Hopefully, it will pay off. “I’m showing Jack Nicklaus, out of the pic- ture to the left, how to improve his golf swing. — Randy Harting ‘Man! Only eight more holes to go. — Curt Maleri
