We go to the movies on dales or with a hunch of friends. We see movies at the Arcadia and Drive-In. on television, pay T.V., or we can rent them to plav on V.C.R.'s. That's why the Olnean 84 is based on the movies. As for the F..R.II.S. students, we feel that You Ought To Be In Pictures. We’ve captured the 1983-84 school year with many pictures in which you are the stars. Through rain, sleet, or snow, from registration to gradu- ation. our Olnean cameras were there. As the old saying goes, “Every picture is worth a thousand words.” And now we would like to take this opportunity to give a round of applause to the “stars” who helped make this book possible: Superman Dave Shafer, our Advisor and often referee in our mans “disagreements” about this book. The Olnean staff, for their hard work throughout the year, even when the classroom seemed more like Animal House. To our mans photographers: those in the Olnean class, plus Brian Harris, Murray Propes. and David C lark, who weren't in the class but willingl) gave up their time to take photos. We would also like to thank Mrs. Mildred Richardson and her Tiger Bag staff. Speith Photograph). Propes Photography, and the Olney Daily Mail for pictures. I’he secretaries Pat Kapper, Sherry Harrison, and Pat Trecce, who must have thought that they were being visited by a Poltergeist every time we walked in the office to sign out, get passes to class, or to get the keys to the classatorium concession stand. To The A-Team. Principal George Rumsey and Vice-Principal James Vovles for making our many announcements over the P.A. and for putting up with our “hall-roamers”. To our manv sponsors who took out ads and put money into this Risk) Business. And most of all. to the E.R.H.S. students who had The Right Stuff this past year in front of the cameras and off. Standing: Sunny F.rbacher. Debbie Militello. Cindy Kesler, Julie Bowen. N.E.C. Champs The I.ady Tiger Netters had an excellence season this year under their new head coach. Katie Potter. The girls ended up with the best record they hate had for years. Never hating to experience the taste of defeat was a goal they set; and it was a goal they achieted. Lnding regular season play with a record of 12-0. the Lady Tigers had beaten the likes of such teams as Flora. Fffingham. and Salem. The highlight of the season, however, had to be defeating Centralia, the first time in four years that Olney had beaten them. The girls didn't stop there — they went on to beat Centralia two more times during the season. One of those wins took place at the Centralia Invitational Tournament where the Tigers took home a 2nd place trophy. A tough Belleville Fast squad took first place from Olney by just a few points. As the season progressed the Lady Netters started to prepare for the NFC. The girls were out for revenge, as Flora had taken away solo championship with a tie the year before. The day of NFC came and the girls were ready and wanting a win. And win they did! The girls swept the meet as they took all positions in the finals. Julie Bowen. 2 seed, came out the victor in a hard fought singles championship match with 1 seed. Sunny F.rbacher. In the doubles finals it was the I seeded team of Anu Natarajan and Julie Read pulling out a win over the 2 seeded team of Cindy Kesler and Debbie Militello. The Lady Tiger Netters also did well at Sectionals. Centralia was in Olney sectional for the first time, making the competition a lot stiffer. Olney came away with a 2nd place behind C entralia. Four girls qualified for State. These four girls were Julie Bowen, Sunny Er- bacher, Julie Read, and Anu Natarajan. Due to an injury that Anu suffered. Kelli O'Dell played doubles with Julie. At State, Julie Bowen did very well as she won her first round, which made her one of the top 32 players in the state. The l ady Tigers are losing only three seniors and are looking for another good season next year. “What do you mean it was in??! I can still see the chalk mark. — Kelly O'Dell “Get lost. Bouffard! Mr. Shafer experienced his first year as coach, and brought a new dimension to the team — win- ning. “With the caliber of underclass talent we have says Coach Shafer, “their potential is unlimited. Two NEC champions in the next three years is not just a goal, but should become a reality. The team carded a 5-9 record overall, but a 4-3 record in dual meets. The regular season was highlighted by victories over Lawrenceville, Fairfield, Mt. Carmel, and EfTingham. In post-season play, they finished fifth in the conference, but missed third place by only 10 strokes. Individually, Scott Salmon placed tenth overall with an 84. A twelfth place finish highlighted the regional. Fresh- man Sean VanGundy was the lowest in Mt Vernon with a 94. The optimism expressed by Coach Shafer carries through to the players. “We have a tremendous shot at the NEC and maybe even sectional, says Sean VanGundy. “Coach Shafer keeps us on our toes. Randy Harting, the number three golfer, adds, “This summer we will be working our hardest, and going to tour- naments to get fine tuned. Hopefully, it will pay off. “I’m showing Jack Nicklaus, out of the pic- ture to the left, how to improve his golf swing. — Randy Harting ‘Man! Only eight more holes to go. — Curt Maleri Girls Volleyball The 1983 volleyball season got underway with the l'igers beating Albion on Aug. 30. The Tiger Volley- ball Team played 13 different teams over the two month season. At one point they were on a low of a six game losing streak, hut came hack to win the last three games to have a final winning record of II wins. 10 losses. Midway through the season, Olney traveled to Newton to compete in the Annual Newton Tourney. Among the four teams playing, the Tigers placed 2nd. Olney's arch rival, the Noble Wildcats, got to play at their own gym the one time the two teams met. This game was looked forward to all season, and they finally met on Sept. 27. The Tigers missed winning the first game by three points after falling behind then making a come-back. 'The second game was not as close — it was lost by seven points. This was the first year for Coach Von Gregg to take over as head coach. Upon speaking to Von she remarked, “ The girls worked really hard and made many improvements throughut the season. She hopes to coach next year. I.eta Crum was coach of the J.V. team. This was her first year coaching. The volleyball team did more this year than they had any of the three previous years we have had volleyball at ERHS. These past years have only been a building stage. They led them to an impres- sive, although down from other years, 6-2 record. Coach Miller added, “I’m pleased that we went to sectionals, for it was the achievement of one of our main goals. The 1983 Harriers had a great amount of talent this year in returning seniors Pat Murray, Jerry Lyon, and Steve Wool- dridge. These men coupled with top juniors Shannon Hough and Neal Gassmann to form a powerful team. Newcomer seniors, Brandon Weems and Tom Weiler, gave some added strength. The Tigers were runners-up in the NEC, and were paced by Neal Gassmann, Pat Murray, and Shannon Hough. Although they had a poor sectional, a bright spot was the team leading finish by Shannon Hough. The cross country team has expectations for next year, with the maturity of sopho- mores Jeff Militello, Billy Page, and Dale Dean. “Run play 1, oops Miller ) w m “How can you tell this is the first 440 yards of the race? With only six returning lettermen, the Tigers showed a great effort in trying to repeat as the NEC Champions. Olney went through a rebuild- ing period as nine sophomores played during the season. The Mt. Carmel Golden Aces regained the NEC Championship title while most of the other teams were rebuilding for the future. The Tigers will be an influence in the conference for the next couple of years. The Pep Club, Tiger Boosters, and the fans of the game proved to show support for the team. Big turn-outs and a lot of support was shown throughout the season. A thank you is well de- served for the people who supported the team. Four members of the team were named to the All- NEC team: Greg Kermicle, first team defen- sive back; Greg Erwin, second team defensive linebacker; Phil Martin, first team defensive tackle and second team offensive guard; and Doug Curtis, honorable mention to the defensive back and offensive receiver teams. Returning lettermen for the 1983 Tigers were: Greg Erwin, tri-captain; Phil Martin, tri-captain; Greg Kermicle, tri- captain; and Harold Davis, senior letterman. Clay Keller, senior letterman; Jeff Ratcliffe, senior letterman; and Pal Hahn, junior letterman. “Martin, look at the chic over there in those tight, red polka-dot shorts.” — Greg Kermicle During the “Mud Bowl” at Salem, many loyal fans stayed through the storm to cheer Olney to a victory. Champs “Guys, this is how you play that new game, “Olney”. — Coach Hough The 1983-84 Varsity Tiger Basketball Team was rated an under- dog in the beginning of the season, but in the end it was different. The NEC Championship title was won by the Olnev Tigers. In a pre-season poll Olney was rated third in the NEC to Flora and Salem, respectively, first and second. Coach Ron Herrin was reluctant to say that he had the best team in the conference at the beginning; but now he can say it! Senior leadership from Pat Murray, Brian Ginder, Darrin Wheat, Bran- don W eems, and Jerry Lyon helped the team win the NEC. Juniors Doug Curtis, Philip Herman. Tom Kehrenbacher, Shannon Hough, and David llarting led the team in morale and off-the- bench scoring. Jon Quay le, Scott Timmons, Tony Ritter, and Tony Hough showed depth to the team by playing as sophomores. The toughest games for the Tigers in the NEC had to be against the Flora Wolves. At Flora, the Tigers lost the first battle by only a few points. But in the second meeting it was different. Row 2: Coach Leon Hough. Robert Payne, Tom Fehren- bacher. Jim I ughlin, Phil Herman, Scott Timmons, Tony Ritter, David Harting. showed their improvement by beating the Wolves by a good margin. The enthusiasm of the “bleacher bums” and the Tiger Boosters showed and was greatly appreciated by all of the Tigers at each game. Olney went into the Regionals ready to play. Beat- ing Mattoon in the opener, Olney faced Charleston in the finals. In the first contest with Charleston, Olney was victorious by only one point; so the game was expected to be a good one. And that it was! In the end C harleston pulled ahead of Olney in over- time. The JV team also had an impressive season going 15-3 overall. Coach Leon Hough was very satisfied with the record. He was very pleased with juniors Philip Herman, David Harting. Tom Fehrenbacher. and Shannon Hough. Sophomores Tony Ritter, Scott Timmons, and Tony Hough really helped out the team. Freshmen Mark Shan and Greg Garner rounded out the squad. The Freshmen A-Team went 14-4 while the B- 'I cam went 4-3. Coach Iairry Miller has high aspects for this freshmen team. Mark Shan. Greg Garner, Sean VanGundy, Don Parker, and Todd Bettis appear to be prospects for Coach Herrin on the varsity level. Overall, the Tiger varsity went 21-8 and in the conference they went 13-1. Co-Champs The Olney Lady Tigers had a very successful sea- son this year. The girls came away with an 13-9 overall record for the season, an N.E.C. co-cham- pionship, and runner-up in their regionals. Although the ladies started off with a loss, they came back to get 4th in the Newton tournament and win 9 straight. But towards the end of the year luck wasn’t with the Tigers as they suffered losses in their last three regular season games. The Mt. Carmel Lady Aces dealt the Olney team a loss with a 61-59 over- time. The very next week the ladies were beaten in overtime 64-62 by Flora. With these two losses at their backs the Tigers needed to beat Fairfield to win the conference solely, but those past losses and that kind of pressure proved to be too much for Olney as they lost 53-52 when a lady mule hit a bucket with 3 seconds left. Although this loss was devastating the Tigers decided they were going to beat Herrin at the Regionals, and that they did. With this win they advanced to the finals of the Mt. Vernon Regionals to meet the home team. It was a hard fought battle but the bigger and more physical Lady Rams came out the victor. The Olney Daily Mail picked an all-tournament team, on the 1st team Rita Ledeker, and Jodi Jones, Jane Jennings and Leslie Floyd were picked for the second team. Fol- lowing this the all-NEC teams were picked. Rita Ledeker made 1st team, Jodi Jones was selected for the 2nd team, and given Honorable Mention were Cindy Kesler and Leslie Floyd. Some other awards given at the banquet were best free throw percentage and the defense award to Rita Ledeker, most assists and best field goal percentage to Cindy Kesler, and the team leadership award to Jane Jennings. The Lady Tigers look forward to another strong team next year as they are only losing three seniors and gaining the strength of the J.V. team that fin- ished 10-5. The one highlight that was the biggest for the girls had to he the victory at the Olney Girl's Relays. This year was the first ever that the ladies had won their own relays. The girls record for duals was 4-4. This included wins over Salem. Ffringhani, St. Anthony, and Rohinson. The season was plagued with rain- outs and not many were made up. The laidy Tigers did well in the large meets this year. Several people placed in the Newton Invitational, this with a few firsts gave the ladies a 3rd place finish. At the Harrisburg Invitational many girls gave their best perfor- mances and ended up in the top six. The Tigers traveled to Marion for their Sectionals and despite the tough field did very well. Even though none of the girls qualified for State many set new school records. Stephanie Roth set a new record in the 880. Junior find) Witte broke her own record in the 2 mile. Several others had been closing in on records, hut due to illness and injury at the end of the season failed to reach them. The N.E.C. meet was held at Olney this year and the girls lost first place to Fairfield by only thirteen points. Several Olney athletes qualified for the Decatur Area Best. These includ- ed: Dehhie Militello. Stephanie Nelson. Rayme Patterson. Julie llouchin. I.eslie Floyd. Becky Peak, and Stephanie Roth. The boy’s track season was like other sports, a tough, hard fought fight. The NEC was blessed with a lot of talent and the Salem Wildcats were strong contenders for another title. But this the Olney Tigers proved them- selves by beating the tough Salem, Mt. C armel, and Carmi teams and capturing the NEC title. “The field events were a great factor in the winning, said Coach Larry Miller. “Pat Murray in the high jump, Albert Wilkerson in the discus, Phil Martin in the shot put, John Kuenstler and Jeff (iammon in the long jump and triple jump, and Bill Parker in the pole vault, all did a great job, concluded Coach Miller. The sprints and sprint relays were as good as usual. “Doug C'urtis was outstanding in the 100 and 200 meter dashes and the 400 and 500 meter relays, said Coach Dave Carmody. Also, in the sprints were Jeff (iammon, Mike Parker, Jarred Angle, and Bob Satterfield. In long distance runs, one name comes to mind — Neal Gassmann. Gassmann won the 2 mile and 1 mile race in the NEC and is the 1984 Sectional Champion in the 2 mile. Neal was never beaten in a 2 mile race up to after the sectionals. Shannon Hough was also a driving factor in the 1 mile and 2 mile races. Pat Murray was an attribute in the 800 meter run and, also, Steve Wooldridge. Others that provided a backbone for the long distance run- ners were Ben Lathrop, Jeff Militello, Dale Dean, and Billy Page. The coaching staff was an essential part of the NEC title. Coach Dve Carmody worked the sprinters into shape. He also worked with the long jumpers. Coach Larry Miller worked long and hard with the long distance runners. Coach Jeff Phad put the shot putters and dis- cus men through tough workouts, in the ring and in the weight room. Thank you to all who helped the track team through this year of competition. i Tiger Hardball Row 1: Jim Doan, Tony Hough, Randy Harting, Brad Hubble, Dave Wiley, Jeff Wagner, Tom Fehrenbacher, Darrin Houchin. The NEC was a N.E.C. Champs “I have just been informed that I have set two new Tiger records — most passed balls in one game and most at bats without a hit!” — Mike Walker tough conference with teams like Mt. Carmel and Flora. Coach I .eon Hough said, “This year the sen- iors came through again. With Tom Weiler and Brandon Weems pitching. Clay Keller in the in- field, Mike Walker was everywhere as he was pitcher, catcher, and outfielder, and Jeff Rat- cliffe played third base and was the designated hitter.” “All our boys played well,” concluded llough. Tom Weiler led in batting with a .480 batting average. Weiler also had a pitching record of 7 and I. Weems had a pitching record of 7 and 2. In the last game against Mt. Carmel, Weems pitched a three-hitter and struck out 13 batters. In the regular season, the Tigers had 109 runs and only gave up 43. Coach Hough is looking forward to the com- ing years in baseball. “Players like Jeff Wagner, Jim Doan, Darin Houchin, Tom Fehrenbacher, Tony Hough and Randy Harding will mature and be another great team for Olney,” added Hough. On Tuesday, May 8, cries of “ alkout! were heard down the main hall right after the 8:25 hell. As close to 100 students gathered, administration representati es demanded the students return to their classes. Over 30 students then left the building. Ihe vice-principal promptly locked the doors, called the police, and termed those students truant. On Wednedsay, May 9, twice that number of students congregated, determined not to lea e or give in until they had some of their questions answered. When it became obvious that a normal day wouldn’t be possible. Principal Rumsey allowed an impromptu student assembly, and addressed the students about the day-lengthening, course-cutting, and decision to give a single lunch hour to the entire student body. At one point Rumsey asked the student body why, if they were so concerned, had they never attempted to present their views to the school board? Board President Monty Mason echoed these thoughts, and also said that 75 5 of the student body didn't care about the cuts, but only wanted to get out of class. These attitudes are typical from a man who, the following Monday night, told concerned students to leave a school hoard meeting. In the current economic conditions, it would be naive to expect “painless” cuts, but the haphazard way the budget and schedule were determined for next year leave little hope for the future of ERHS. “Honest, Mr. Begle. I was just standing here!” — Murray Propes “Education must be the 1 priority of this district, and until it is the students will continue to suffer.” — Angie Ring ”1 just hope the administration realizes that it is our future they are cutting and budgeting.” — Cindy Kesler ”1 think it (the student strike) was the most effective way to get our voices heard.” — Scott Salmon Bloopers 41 «■uni Phil Martin and the Phil Martin look-a-likc contest winner share the spotlight dance.
