NOVEMBER — The Vietnam Veterans Memorial, its black granite panels inscribed with the names of the 57,939 Americans killed or listed as missing in action in Southeast Asia from July 1959 to spring 1975, was dedi- cated by a Veterans parade through the nations capital attended by more than 150,000 vets and their families. DECEMBER — Dr. William DeVries stands over his pa- tient Barney Clark, a dentist, at the University of Utah Medi- cal Center just prior to the operation which made medical history. Clark was the first person to receive a permanent artificial heart, enduring 112 days with it until his death on March 23, 1983. NOVEMBER — America’s reusable space shuttle Columbia is shown above lifting off the launch pad at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida and, right, touching down, accom- panied by a chase plane, at the Edwards Air Force Base in Califor- nia.

JANUARY — Washington Redskins quarterback Joe Theis- mann signals “No. 1” to America at the end of Super Bowl XVII. Theismann and running back John Riggins led Washing- ton to a 27-17 win over Don Shula's Miami Dolphins. FEBRUARY — University of Georgia football standout Hershel Walker waived his senior year of eligibility to sign a three year $3.9 million contract with the New Jersey Generals of the newly cre- ated United States Football League. Walker will be the highest paid football player in history. FEBRUARY — After eleven highly successful seasons, M A S H left the air in fine fashion. The final 2l i hour episode, aired on Monday, Feb. 28, received the highest Niel- sen Rating and the largest audience ever for a single TV program. Nearly 80% of America’s television sets in use, or 125,000,000 people, were tuned to CBS. M A S H, with a rating of 60.3, broke the record set by the “Who Shot J.R.?” episode of CBS’ “Dallas” in 1980. FEBRUARY —U.S. Marine Capt. Chuck Johnson explains to the press how he sin- gle handly stopped a column of Israel tanks that violated Marine lines in Bei- rut, Lebanon. Armed only with a .45 cali- ber pistol he told the Israeli leader, “You’re going to have to kill me.” The tanks left. V
