On Friday, the Homecoming Pep Session was especially peppy . As the students entered the gym, the band was building the excitement by playing songs from its marching show. After everyone's favorite “Battle Cry” cheer was done (Seniors winning, of course!) Student Council President, Mike Hill, announced the 1980 Homecoming queen candidates. Candidates were Whitney Swanson, es- corted by Mark Walters; Susn Schnepper, escorted by Mark Stine; and Lori Lyon, escorted by Jay Dee Waggoner. Lori Lyon was crowned 1980 Homecoming queen by the 1979 queen, Patti Hill. A Homecoming King contest was pul on by the Pep Club. Candidates were Mike I evitt, Greg Clow, and Brad Cummins. Each picked an activity to perform, and the one with the most applause won. Mike I evitt won for his muscle-showing and his sexy looks! Greg and Brad came in close though. Greg had to do a strip, and Brad demonstrated his skillful ability to get a girl to go out with him (except this girl was a teacher Mrs. Schmalhausen!). After the football players and girls vol- leyball teams were introduced, and the school song was played, everyone was dis- missed to return to class. The Homecoming football game was a spectacular success! With a score of 20 - 0, the Tigers led on to a victorious victory. The game was followed by the traditional Homecoming dance, featuring the band, Stasis. 1980 Homecoming Queen Lori Lyon and attendants Susan Schnepper and Whitney Swanson Homecoming Dedications above- Mrs. Millspaugh is receiving the plaque to dedicate the Homecoming game to the late Coach Millspaugh. right- The Homecoming mural drawn by Amy Wilkerson, Lori Lyon, and Whitney Swanson. Ice Castles Theme For Pow Wow 1981 20 22 The Pow Wow Variety Show was held on Saturday, Feb. 7, this year. The talented M.C.’s chosen for the night’s show were Janet Hahn and Kevin Ridgely. The two, combined with Pam Parker and her notions of suicidal attempts, helped to bring an evening of laughter. The talented cast proved to make the whole show a big success; but without the assistance of Mr. Makeever, Mrs. Lidy, and the stage crew, the show would never have been a complete success. Amy Wilkerson 23 The 1981 Junior- Senior Prom was held on Fri- day, April 24. The theme was “Living in a Fanta- sy.” From 8:30 to 11:30 the band “Gopher Bro- que”, from St. Louis, provided a variety of ever- popular slow songs. During the course of the even- ing the attendants and chaperones served Punch and Cake to all the couples. After-Prom featured a disco held at the Eagles Lodge. A couple of DJ’s from E.L. Crackers in Charleston entertained the crowd until 4 a.m. 25 1. Anita Barringotn and Dawn McKinney seem to be enjoying the refreshments. 2. The weavings for the fair are always very interesting 3. The strike began August 27th. All the school buses ran as usual, but the students came to school to be greeted by picketing teachers. The strike was finally ended after a long negotiating session lasting from Sunday afternoon Sept. 14th to early Monday morning Sept. 15th. The strike lasted a total of twelve days and as a result it has effected almost everyone in some way or another. Our vaca- tions were shortened and our first two football games against Newton and Charleston were forfeited. All practice for sports and Band were cancelled. This alone affected a lot of people. This strike may have brought some negative results, but the teachers felt it was necessary, and it did bring about some changes for the better. Mrs. Walker and Mr. Huffman look like they’re ready to go back to work. Looks like one tough day on the picket line for Mr. Walters, Mr. Kessler, Mr. Atkins, and Mr. Chambers. n r- Mr. Zwilling and Miss Piper look tired, but have a smile for the camera. Their most exciting and outstanding game was when they defeated Robinson. Since this was their first year, the girls used it mainly to gain experience and they didn’t expect to win every game. With the Varsity and Junior Varsity girls returning, their outlook is very promising. 129 Watch out Patty! Tracy’s out to get you. Linda Hahn, Patty Stoltz, and Kim Werkmeister show teamwork. Mr. Ron Herrin and Mr. Larry Miller served as the cross- country coaches this year after Cecil Fletcher was unable to coach the team because of illness. In the past, teams under coach Fletcher have compiled a remarkable record of 100 wins and only 15 losses. This year’s NEC win was the 10th in 14 years, but the first since 1976. This year’s team had only two seniors-David Nix and Chip Jennings. Juniors Dan Gassmann and Ron Sager, and sophomores Frank Gassann, Bryan Brooks, and Jeff Roth are expected to return and have good seasons in the future. We were honored to have 3 players chosen all-conference to represent ERHS: Chip Jennings, Greg Weems and Kevin Wash- burn. Chip Jennings also received honorable mention on the All-State Team. The J.V. Tigers provided a lot of action for the fans this year. They capped the season with an 11 game winning streak to finish 13-5. The Frosh also did extremely well. Pat Miller Next year should be promising because we are only losing Mike Potter and Mike Hill to graduation. Thanks guys and Good Luck next year. 144 2 1. They missed their first 2 games of the season due to the teachers’ strike. Fortunately the 2 games missed were non-conference games. This year we were picked by the pre-season polls to finish second to last but the Tigers came through and finished in a tie for second place. Homecoming was special this year for the football team. This year’s game was dedicated to the late Coach Bill Millspaugh who gave 32 years to coaching athletes at E.R.H.S. To psyche up the Tigers before action the only thing heard throughout the locker room was “Another One Bites the Dust” by Queen. That was exactly what hap- pened to Fairfield, Lawrenceville, Carmi, Red Hill, and Salem! There were a few more bright spots for the Tigers this year. Howard Clodfelter, Greg Clow, and Mark Walters were all-Conference choices. While Jim Ballard, Brad Cummins, Bruce Duncan, and Mike Levitt were honor- able mention choices. Howard Clodfelter, Mark Wal- ters were also voted to the All-South teams. Also Coach Mike Wilson was voted “Coach of the Year” in the N.E.C. Congratulations Tigers for a fine season! 1. The Tiger’s pre-game lineup. 2 Brad Cummins goes for yardage. 3. Kim Herman goes around the end. 4. Steve Anderson goes in for Chris Hortin. 149 1. The fine Football Tigers coaching staff — Head Coach, Wilson; De- fensive coordinator, Coach Car- mody; Head Linesman, Coach Phad; Head J.V. Coach, Thomas. 2. Pastor KKC, INC. 1610 East Main Olney, IL Ph. 395 4348 208 On April 20,1981, Mr. Cecil Fletcher announced his retirement, after a 37 Vi year teaching career. Mr. Fletcher has been at ERHS for 27 years. He taught at Patoka, 111. High School for 6 years and served 4V4 years in the navy. Mr. Fletcher’s educational background includes a bachelor’s degree from Illinois College in Jacksonville and he also earned credits at Southern 111. University in Carbondale. While at ERHS Mr. Fletcher taught both World History and P.E. and was actively involved in coach- ing team sports. Mr. Fletcher served as head football coach for 2 years and head basketball coach for 6 years. He also coached track and cross-country, total- ing a 33 year coaching career. Under Mr. Fletcher’s coaching, the track team held a 9 year conference championship and the cross-coun- try team held an eight year conference championship. In the area of football Mr. Fletcher feels that “the 1966 football team was the best team we’ve had here at Olney in the past 27 years. The team rated second in Southern 111. that year.” Mr. Fletcher was head foot- ball coach in 1966 which shows the great effort he put into all the teams he coached. As for his own sports career, Mr. Fletcher was in- volved in basketball, football, and track both during high school and college. And in 1976 Mr. Fletcher was voted to the Illinois Basketball Player Hall of Fame, which is a great honor for any athelete. Mr. Fletcher’s plans for the future are uncertain. He says he will “loaf for awhile” and do some work around the house. Everyone here at ERHS extends best wishes and sincere thanks to Mr. Fletcher for his great service to our school and community. Mr. Fletcher And Mrs. Denton Retire Mrs. Elizabeth Denton is retiring from her job here at ERHS after 30 years as a speech pathologist. Mrs. Denton has been here at ERHS for 10 years, and she also did work in Shelbyville, Champaign County, Mt. Carmel, and Monticello. Her educational background includes a BA, MA, and 2 years beyond that, all earned at the University of Illinois. Mrs. Denton explained that speech pathology in- volves screening school populations for students with speech problems. Then programs are designed to aid students on an individualized basis. In college Mrs. Denton was involved in both Phi Omega Pi and Sigma Pi, and she was a member of Delta Kappa, which is an honorary forensic fraternity. Other accomplishments include the Den Mother’s Award, which was the 2nd ever given in Buffalo Trace County. In the future Mrs. Denton plans to get a job in another state or another area of interest. Also she plans to catch up on her hobbies which include: doll and antique collecting, gardening, sewing, and crafts of all kinds. We all wish Mrs. Denton a happy and fulfilling future, and say thanks for her many years of devoted and dedicated work here in the East Richland School District. 209 Adams, Donna 111 Adams, Douglas
