Sputniks whirled around the earth, and students everywhere began to realize their importance as future citizens and leaders. While we felt this new obligation to the world and to ourselves, we at ERHS followed the national trend and placed a new emphasis on education. We saw school in a new light-as a place to develop our abilities and interests to their fullest extent. Science and mathematics naturally gained in importance, but other courses f agri- culture, homemaking, industrial work, social studies, cultural interests, languagef -all were affected by the change in outlook. We now are applying this new scientific attitude to our entire educational program. We Want to use our minds, abilities, and interests to develop better students, for if we are better students, we will also be better citizens. This is our goal. We learn to reason by studying algebraic and geometric problems, and then by applying this new ability to every- thing We do. As students of mathe- matics, we discover many principles applicable to other courses. Even more important, we are providing ourselves with a sound basis for reasoning out future problems. We at ERHS learn to know the people ot the World. Through a study of the English language and its literature, We better understand our own country: through a study of other languages, we learn more about other people ot the world. This year we were able to study Latin, French, and Spanish in addition to our own language, and, because of this, We feel we are closer to our World neighbors. 15, X'siM i ir G.. The night before the first game, a returning letter- man, Keith Lake, met with an accident, putting him out for the season. Not all of the season was bad, though. We are hope- ful of the evolution of what we all hope will be a championship team. The season at ERHS was one of many thrills, and although in some ways it was not too successful, in others it was. The standing record at the end of the season was two wins, five losses, and two ties. The Homecoming game with Bridgeport was probably the most thrilling game. lf only there had been one more quarter, we could have changed that final tie. 'T' I E st aa E2 23 QSPAQ!! ln the spring a boy's iancy turns to baseball and this certainly held true at ERHS this season. With the return ot seven lettermen and with lots of good talent among the freshmen and sopho- mores, the baseball team's season looks qood at its opening. ln the tirst game ot the season Coach Millspauqns team rolled over Flora llfO. We are confident that there is another district winner and a state team in the makinq. Before that time, how' ever, there is a heavy schedule of qames to be played. The two rrfturning lettermen, Worden Parrish, above, and Tbm Huffman, below, prartire on Ihr' new ER HS rourts. emzis Four years ago this season, the Olney tennis team was formed. The boys were Earl Parrish, Dick King, Dick Lane denloerger, Dan Yount, Frank Gassrnan, and Iohn Forsyth. When the team started it did not win many matches. However, in just three years, they won third in the state meet and tirst in the district. This was topped by an unde- feated season in l956-57. This was accomplished after the team had lost Frank Gassman and lohn Forsyth. This year the team is again handi- capped by losing Earl Parrish, Dick Landenberger, Dick King, and Dan Yount. These losses represent the en- tire iirst squad except tor Torn l-lutiman and Worden Parrish. Many ot the tennis teams ot other towns have not lost more than one or two ot their old squads. This of course handicaps our team. However, the team has several new prospects this year whom we are counting on. We cannot expect as good a season this year as we had last year lout as the players gain experience the team will shape up. Front row. left to right: Neal Nix, Terry Robins. The year around the board meets in long sessions to care for the business ot our system. They give unsparingly of the little time they have from their busi- nesses and professions. Mr. Purdy, in his second year with us, has been concerned with the problem oi a curriculum adequate for our present- day world. Under his leadership cur- riculum study committees have had many meetings. Mr. Provines serves as his assistant at the elementary levels: Mr. Godeke, at the high school level, ln addition, Mr. Godelce has served as our principal. There are many things that we shall always remember about him, but oi l958, we shall not torget the advice he passed on to us in his second- hour speeches. l am sure that it we use a few ot his ideas as guides to live by, we shall always be on the right track. ,,,..,..., S K , 13' xonc xon llllfljllllj c I N I zusson :pro 1 X EUC EFS 'W 1' lS1I 1 Ur. l'rf1vim's dl'7ll!HISfl'llfl'5 ll th4'nrf'n1 for lx. Representative of the class of 1958 X R61 EW SQ' cf Gfffer four years af . There were approximately two hundred and forty of us when we entered ERHS in the fall of 1954. We were a confident group and began to assume positions of leadership in our freshman year. Many of us were in the Mixed Chorus that first year and made the trip to Chicago. Since then there have developed among us many fine athletes, several outstanding musicians, and especially a large number of interested students in the classroom. As a class we have realized the importance of achievement in the laboratory and at the math board. We leave ERHS with regret for the pleasant days, but with hopes that we may all some- how fill worthwhile positions in the world in which we find ourselves.
