This subject, more than any other, gives us the tools needed for communicating with the world around us. The course opens up new horizons to students as they study philoso- phy, politics, and the great works of literature. Under the leadership of Charles Edwards, the class is experimenting in a new form of learning. The course includes not only study in class, but also field trips relating to the subject of study. These are just some of the important aspects of this new mode of education. Mr. Charles L. Edwards humanities experiment in education 1 36 Mrs. Jill J. While carpenters were busy laying the building foundations for Eastern Randolph Senior High School, the newly elected members of the Steering Com- mittee were busy laying the foundations for student unity. Their first task was to write a constitution to provide guidelines for future clubs and organizations at ERSHS. The ultimate task of the com- mittee was to supervise Student Council elections. These Student Council officers became the first ones elected by the unified student body of ERSHS. Students encounter new faces and personalities. 42 If elected I will do my best ... Students commit themselves to a year of hard work and responsibility. studentcounclil Tommy Strickland, Vice-President; Ellen O’Briant, Treasurer; Chip Dameron, President; Dot Campbell, Secretary. 43 traditions have started The Eastern Randolph Senior High School Student Council is the direct outgrowth of the Steering Commit- tee. As the first club to organize at ERSHS, the Student Council has played a vital part in further organization of the student body. It selected the school seal, chose graduation invitations, and decided on colors of caps and gowns. These decisions will become over the years a part of ERSHS tradition. 44 The Christmas season brought to Eastern Randolph not only the Christmas Spirit, but also a new school spirit. In “Operation Christmas Spirit,” we joined to- gether to put Christmas in the homes of underprivileged children in the county. But in doing so, we accom- plished much more. We realized for the first time a new unity and friendship that bound us together. ; i s aa COOR! Bud Strickland (be, a i) O Pe = c ) 82 It was determination, skill, and most of all, unity, that led the Eastern Randolph football squad to a winning season in the first year of competition. Neither injuries nor defeat discouraged Coach Brower’s pack of cats, as they won the last two games of the season over two powerful foes and emerged with a 5-5 record. Even though the Wildcats were not eligible for the conference crown, next year’s team will be in the thick of con- ference play. Having the same drive as the ’68 Wildcats, they will likely keep the winning tradition of our school.
