BAND The lO6 piece East Providence High School Band approaches the end of a very successful year. Our band is considered one of the most outstanding marching and concert bands in New England. The band has presented fine assembly programs on several occasions for our own student body and has been received enthusiastically by the students of Seekonk, Riverside and Central Junior High Schools. Among its other activities, the band has competed in the New England Solo and Ensemble Festival, the R. I. Solo and Ensemble Festival, the Rhode island Audi- tion. This Spring it played in the Memorial Day Parade and performed on Class Day. Elected officers of the band are Elizabeth Chase and Diane Hunt, Student Con- ductors, Robert Waltz and James Osborne, Drum Maiors, Gloria Gagnon, Student Council Representative. All band members loin in singing the praises of the man who has contributed his time, his effort, and his talent to the East Providence Band, our director Dr. Stephen E. Farnum. THE ORCHESTRA During the T957-T958 school year, the East Providence High School Orchestra under the direction of Mr. John Corrado, has appeared several times. They played four numbers with the band and chorus at the Christmas Concert. Later in the year the orchestra auditioned at the Rhode Island State Music Festival, and played at the Honors Day Assembly Program. They also played several numbers for both Riverside and Central Junior High Schools. CHORUS Under the direction of Mr. Repucci the seventy-five chorus members strive to de- velop appreciation of fine music and to present programs that are enioyable. This year the chorus had the pleasure of performing at the Warwick Music Festival. The highlight of the year was the fine rendition of Christmas music at the Assembly and the Christmas Concert. to cultivate leisure-time interests and to develop skill in following those interests flrsf chair of america leisure hme achvlhes 'Q -.xr i Hprovfde an opporfumfy for ralenfed puorfs To do creafvve work , f 1 5 .. :-, k v .f f ru gf ' , x 2 Q 1 2 ' x K j Q Q , ! , Y i ' , Z I f , , . iz Z A x 'IJ X . Early pre-league games found the Townies out- classed. Mid-season league contests saw the team at its best and toward the end of the season riddled with Asiatic flu the team again had its troubles. For its first two games, non-league af- fairs, E.P. tackled two of the strongest teams in Massachusetts and lost, Arch Bishop Williams of Braintree 38-6 and then to Natick High School 45-6. These two games, however, conditioned the squad for the competition ahead. E.P. trimmed Warwick in the opening league encounter 13-12. Two losses followed, one to Central 13-7 and Mt. Pleasant 45-O. The latter game found E.P. using players who first the most part had had no game experience before. The flu had just about wiped out the starting team. The following week the team began to play the game they were capable of, beating Rogers 13-6. This was followed by a victory over Cranston 19-6 on Armistice Da . Hope was the next victim 37-19. With these successes, hopes soared for Y another Thanksgiving Day victory but LaSalle was up and E.P. couldnt get its attack going, with the result that LaSalle took the game 24-7. ln the face of many obstacles, Coach Deffley turned in a good coaching iob. Our congratulations to him and his assistants Mr. Collins, Mr. Tkacs, Mr. Maynard and Mr. Stringfellow. E ts S U il. M tl GERRY BLUNT winning tradition. After winning seven straight exhibition games, the hoopsters encountered a stread of bad luck, losing their first two league games. Then they came back strong to upset a highly favored Westerly team 60-59. The victory over Westerly set the boys afire and they experienced iust one more setback before finishing second in the league. Being successful in their league encounters, the Townies attempted to bring this success into the state playoffs. After beating a hapless Woonsocket team in the quarter finals by a score of 59-37, the hoopsters met a strong South Kingston team and were defeated 66-58. Height was the big factor in the game with the tall and talented rebels controlling the boards. Senior members of the team were Jerry Blunt, Donald Carlson, Kenneth O'Brian, Edward Rogers, Thomas Santos, and Robert Hall. Underclassmen who will be returning to bolster the team are David Edmonds, Robert Lomba, and Hannibal Amaral.
