Mr. James E. Bates assumed his duties as a teacher of English at East Providence Senior High School on September 8, l924. He had previously received his bachelor of arts degree from Clark University. Wishing to further his professional growth, Mr. Bates next matriculated at Harvard University, from which he grad- uated with a masters degree in education in l93O. ln T931 Mr. Bates became principal of our school, thus beginning his twenty- five years as principal and friend to thousands who have attended East Providence Senior High School. During these years as principal, Mr. Bates has been very active in state, regional, and national educational organizations. He is a past president of the Rhode Island Secondary School Principals' Association. He has also served as chairman of the Athletic Committee of that organization. Other offices held by Mr. Bates have been: president of the Council of New England Secondary School Principals' Association and State coordinator for the National Association of Secondary School Principals. He is currently principal of the summer high school of the Greater YMCA. Mr. Bates has a great deal ot interest in photography and music. The latter is exemplified by his active participation in school operattas and the fact that he is president of the East Providence Civic Music League. During the past twenty-five years, great changes have taken place. The first class to graduate under Mr. Bates was one-third the size of this year's class, the twenty-fifth to graduate since his assuming the office of principal in l93l. The faculty has doubled during the intervening years. Ten of the teachers who were teaching then are still with him today. The most outstanding change has been that of the buildings in which this school has been housed. The first was a tra- ditional school building of its day, but it was inadequate for the growing student enrollment. Today's new building is modern, adequate, and functional in design. With this new school, Mr. Bates has been able to realize a truly comprehensive program. We, the class of l956, are proud to have the distinction of being the twenty- fifth class to graduate under the able administration of Mr. James E. Bates . . .
