Kirby, who, through his patience and diligence, his method of teaching, his sense of humor, and his friendly guidance has been a maior factor in the success of this yearbook. His ability to attack problems seriously and with cheerfulness this year, as well as in past years, has made our entire venture enjoyable and profitable. We, the members of the Crimson staff and the Senior Class, salute Mr. Kirby and wish him continued success and happiness in the future. With great sincerity we, the class of '54, express our appreciation and gratitude to MRS. LURA SELLEW. Because of her understanding, youthtulness, and cheerfulness, she has given us the initiative to strive for success. Without her help, our three years here would not have been so enioyable. MR. JAMES E. BATES Principal if .Fi L in SJ ', -' A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRINCIPAL TO THE GRADUATING CLASS . . . We of the faculty are proud of the class of l954. Never before in the long proud history of our school have so many special scholastic awards, so many state championships, and so many in- dividual honors come to us in the course of a single year. To a large extent, our greatest year can be attributed to the many fine contributions that you as members of the senior class have made. Personally, l am pleased that you have had two full years in this beautiful and efficient new building. I hope that the sum total of your ex- periences here has been pleasant and profitable. We of the school staff will continue to retain a real interest in your future. We stand ready to help you in any educational problems that may confront you as you now adiust yourselves to your life work. JAMES E. HOW YA GONNA KEEP 'EM DOWN ON THE FARM The Future Farmers of America, or F. F. A. as it is commonly known, is a national organization of, by, and for boys studying vocational agriculture. Here at E. P. the F.F.A. chapter was chartered in lf?-49 and since then has become a popular organization in the school. This past year after its organization the chapter began operation of the School Farm on land adiacent to the school owned by Mr. Walter B. Chaffee and gen- erously loaned by him to the school. The farm is now occupied by two student poultry proiects and four sheep proiects with plans for more proiects. The F.F.A. has four degrees of advancement consisting of Greenhand, Chap- ter Farmer, State Farmer, and American Farmer, which are awarded for achieving certain goals in vocational agriculture. Since receiving its charter, the E.P. chapter has awarded 52 Greenhands, 5 Chapter Farmers, and 2 State Farmers. Chapter officers for 1953-54 were: President, Roland Collins, Vice President, Joseph Clarke, Secretary, Richard Tracy, Treasurer, Joseph Santos, Reporter, Gil- bert Carpenter, and Sentinel, Henry Carlberg. Z' fl The members of the French Club listen carefully to Miss Katherine Perkins, who is discussing some interesting facts about the Eiffel Tower. C'EST Sl BON! Yes, it is good. This song title musically describes the French Club. These girls under the direction of their advisor, Miss Katherine Perkins, try to catch and adopt, if only for a whole note, the light, fun-loving, singing mood of Paris. As a prelude to the season, Mary Nunes was elected president of the club, Virginia Yuro, vice president, Elaine LaVault, secretary, and Leila Ray, treasurer. A French skit was conducted in the fall as part of the program staged for the Parent-Teachers' Association by the language department. It opened, as all the meetings and activities do, with the singing of La Marseillaise. A Representing East Providence at the Junior Alliance Francaise Can organization made up of French students from twelve public and private schoolsD were Vir- ginia Yuro and Mary Nunes. They alone were present at the executive meetings, but many of the club's members went to the regular Alliance meetings where interesting and varied programs were offered, including informal talks by stu- dents who had lived and studied abroad. Highlighting the season were the Christmas party, musical programs, and a tea dance where traditional music and songs were rendered. Then, too, there was the spring trip to Boston, at which time the girls dined at a French restaurant, vis- ited the French rooms at the Museum of Fine Arts and attended the showing of a French play. Yes, the year was good. This is what any member will tell you, and she'll probably sum it all up with another French song title, C'est la Vie! MR. RECORD MAN Please play our song, MR. RECORD MAN is what you will hear in the cafeteria as the students eat their lunch, and without fail the students' requests are fulfilled. This music is supplied by the Control Room through the public address system. The public address system is also used to give announcements at the end of the day. lt can be directed to all the rooms in the school, or to one indi- vidual room. This year the girls also have an opportunity to operate the Control Room every Monday, each student working when he or she has a study period. The Control Room has everything it needs to run it efficiently and is very well J UST FOR YOU The assembly committee under the able direction ot Mr. Leslie F. Carson planned the assemblies each week JUST FOR YOU. The secretary of the assembly committee was Janet Asbury. She and the other members of the assembly committee planned the assemblies during home room period each Tuesday. Each member was a part of the committee and a definite assignment was given to each person. The group met in the Green Room where they discussed plans for future assemblies in an uninterrupted and leisurely manner. The Assembly Committee planning an assembly. One of the outstanding assemblies presented during the- i953-54 school year contained excerpts from the Senior Class Play. Another interesting assembly was a showing of a film ot the East Providence High School Band. Bea of Ernie and Bea talked to us on the subject ot traffic and showed how the U.T.C. is an advantage to us. We, of the i954 Class, thank the assembly committee for the fine iob that they have done planning many fine assemblies Just for You. THERE'S MUSIC IN THE AIR THERE'S MUSIC IN THE AIR, and the magic voices of our East Providence High School Chorus harmonize right into the picture of this year's music theme. Now as in the past, the choral group, under the diligent direction of Miss Hope Smith, has presented some fine entertainment throughout the year, and many have been delighted by their varied presentations. Their originality in group singing partly explains the popularity that has greeted them on such occasions as Christmas Assembly, a night school program, and a Christmas Concert for the P.T.A. The Chorus boasts of three fine soloists in Dianne DeStefano, Jean Mclver, and Marie Rashed. These girls have met with responsive approval in the many ap- pearances they've made in school assemblies. Such fine efforts and such splendid results deserve praise and appreciation. We are certainly proud of our Chorus which speaks the melodious language of many lands, a language that will live forever. ,df 1 -. af, Miss Hope Smith, director explains a few lines of the next song to the girls, 1'-'il' 5 V f'- 'H ' rgggzsuui z V ESPEClALLY FOR YOU The 1953-54 school year will go down in history ESPECIALLY for You in East Providence High School, for this year a Student Council was formed in our high school. After months of planning by Mr. Harold S. Goodwin, faculty advisor of the Council, the student body was informed of the beginning of the organization of this group in early November. The leaders of every group are represented, with a representative from each homeroom and the senior and iunior class presidents making up the main body of the council. The broad aims of this indispensable group are as follows: l. to promote and develop good school citizens, 2. to schedule and operate many school activities, such as dances, parties, conducted tours of the school, etc., 3. to promote har- monious relations between teachers and students, 4. to provide opportunities for leadership, 5. to strengthen school-community relationships. There were five committees which were formed to carry out these aims. On Feb. 12, a THE SAXOPHONES concert was played at Melrose, Mass., and then the winter concert followed directly. And so it continued on through the year, with the band participating in many kinds of activities-some on a competitive basis, and some iust for the enioyment of doing it or helping out some organization for a benefit. Finally Class Day found the seniors playing for the last time with the band they had served so well for three years. With mixed emotions they looked back upon the years and activities they had participated in with their band. Congratulations are in order for the East Providence band, who actually live up to the title of STRIKE UP THE BAND. The East Providence High School Library was formally opened with a librarian in September, 1924. The 8OO volumes already there were first arranged and later classified and catalogued, forming the basis of your present highly specialized reference library of over 3500 volumes. Organized in 1927, the Library Auxiliary, a group of students interested in books and reading, have assisted the librarian. They take attendance, charge and discharge books, and have made the library material available to students and teachers. Until 1934, the collection was housed originally in the small but very beautiful library room. At that time Room 3 was added for much needed space- which was used almost entirely for reference. With three files for clippings and cork bulletin boards for the display of pictures, this became the perfect place for teachers to bring their classes for reference and the discussion of special topics. They also enioyed the reading of the latest books. 7-35 Miss Clancy chats with the girls of the Library Auxiliary. By the end of 1936, the old card catalogue had been completely revised and enlarged to include many subiects, analytical heading cards, and also the listing of much pamphlet material which made the library's resources more easily ac- cessible to all students and teachers. For about ten years, beginning in 1931, a Library Science Course was given one period a week. ln 1924, Miss Mary P. Hill was appointed the first full-time librarian. Miss Audrey Reed was appointed to take Miss HilI's place as librarian, in September, 1948. In November, 1950, Miss Anna Clancy was appointed to this position. ln 1952, when the new East Providence High School was finished, the books were moved into the spacious, well-lighted room on the second floor. This library, with its curved desk for checking books, comfortable chairs for leisure reading, and its many tables for reference work, has been a great step forward since that first library in 1924. So that's the way it works remark the members of the Camera Club. YOU OUGHT TO BE IN PICTURES YOU OUGHT TO BE IN PICTURES -this theme was taken literally by the Camera Club, whose members were all ardent photo-bugs. During the Christmas season, the Student Council tree, the girls decorating for the Christmas Formal, and the decorations in the library were all subiects for our photographers. Many of the pictures published in the Townie can be credited to our Camera Club. The Camera Club met every other Monday. Its main purpose was to instruct its members concerning the mechanism of the camera, the composition of pic- tures, and developing and printing. At the first meeting, with Mr. Walter J. Kirby as advisor, plans for the year were made, and the following officers were elected: president, Deborah Burns, vice president, Marilyn Russell, secretary, Barbara Leonard, and treasurer, Ann McCloskey. Other members included Joe DaRocha, Patricia Boyd, Myrna Keenan, Carol Cole, Bob Johnson, Bernard Richard, Joel Nyberg, George Souza, and Karen Spiegel. STRANGE THINGS ARE HAPPENING Like other scientists of our modern scientific age, the students of East Provi- dence gather every other Tuesday to work on projects which they select and work on throughout the year under the guidance of Mr. James A. Garvey, their Advisor. This year the group elected the following officers: Richard Wiloerg, President, Jean Nichols, Secretaryg and Ann Eckert, Treasurer. Each year the East Providence Science Club participates in the Rhode Island Science Fair held at Brown University. Members getting the required three points can apply for a scholarship by taking a test. The students this year will submit their entries in the contest during the month of March. However, the Science Club is not all work, there is much fun involved, too. Among the many social activities that took place this year the Science Club had a Christmas Party. Each student brought some refreshments, and they were en- joyed by all, making the party a huge success. We, the students of the T954 Crimson, wish the members of the Science Club the very best of luck! 6' ATE A K4 6' NTXO FNTHE uf AS QPENE Vx E NSQ: rg' k K a - A mf L, 1. , I 4 W V ,1Jj?Ef1 f 3 , F f. EAST PROVIDENCE vs CENTRAL Rebounding from their defeat at Newport the previous week, the Red and White conquered a stubborn Central eleven, I2-0, at City Stadium. New- comers who will be a valuable asset to the team are Billy Propatier, Harry Edmunds and Pete Voccio, who will add pitching strength. The captain of this indispensable group is Red Fitton who was elected at the Lettermen's Ban- quet a year ago. CHARLES VUCCI Captain of Golf Team Lights, camera, action the show has begun. Yes, BY THE BEAUTIFUL SEA, Our East Providence High School Swimming pool was the spot where the students of our school presented the 2nd annual Water Ballet, a spectacular aqua show. The program, arranged with pretty girls and timed swimming, was a marvelous sight. Music was supplied by our own East Providence High School band, which was directed by Dr. Stephen E. Farnum. Among the many acts were Synchronized Swimming, The Young Smooth- ies, and a comedy act Cruising Down the River. Barsam Kazarian starred in a specialty, What a Swim Class! A closer view of the stars. One of the many sparkling 'Wm' bers, the Star, The last one in is a scatty cat. The ballet was held tour nights and each night a tremendous crowd attended. THE WHEELS OF FORTUNE featured circular swimming with the girls forming stars, was combined with the boys' excellent precision swimming. Mr. A. Clifford Adams, the Breathing Man, was a specialty act in the show. The dynamic conclusion was Swimming Home with six boys and six girls wearing iridescent hats and gloves which glowed in the black light. The successful results of our show were due to the untiring ef- forts and unique direction of Mr. Roy Watmough with his assist- ants, Mrs. Alice A. Sullivan and Mrs. Dorothy Kleniewski. You and l, You and I, Oh, how happy we'll be. Everyone was happy and enjoyed the Ballet. The tireless work of all was ap- preciated and is to be congratulated. When do we go on? ask the Old Smoothies. 'Urn wif, Oh, too bad, Beth, looks like Mona won this battle. A water battle is always fun. The other boys in the club are Joe Clarke, Joe Conte, Harry Costa, Frankie Mello, Richard Silva, Thomas Rosa, Bill Roux, Bud Sawyer, Richard Santos, Steve Pickup, Richard Perry, Bill West, Frankie Perrotti, Albert Lusignan, and Richard Salguerio. ins The members ofthe Senior Girls' Bowling Club take time out to pose for a group picture. BALLI N' THE JACK We're BALLlN' THE JACK with Girls' Bowling, headed by Nancy Arzooyan, president, Janice Whipple, secretary, and Jean Nichols, treasurer. Every Wednesday afternoon from 3 p.m. to about 4:30 at the East Providence bowling alleys, the girls exhibited their skill. Nancy Arzooyan, Angela Cavallaro, Dorothy Veader, and Beverly Pombo usually hit the highest scores. Once this year these same girls went to Cranston to match talents with the Cranston High bowling team. Much of the success of the club was due to the greatly appreciated work of their advisor, Miss Goff. To climax the bowling season, a banquet was held. Trophies were awarded to the girls with the highest single score and the highest average. We know that all the girls gained satisfaction from their weekly exploits at the bowling academy, and we are sure that the sophomores and juniors will string along in the tuture on the reputable past of our East Providence Bowlers. 1 ' 4 4 n l Nancy Connor Liz Hollis, Captain Maureen Maynard Leila Ray Anita LeClaire Barbara Barsamian s-fl l Anita LeClaire Dolores Axile Barbara Barsamian Virginia Masarocco Leila Ray Ruth Souza AX DONALD GUSTAVSON Center GERALD SULLIVAN ROBERT FERREIRA Wing Wang RAYMOND FITTON Goalie CARL JOHNSON DONALD TRAVERS Defense Defense Wx QW DUNCAN MacDONALD Defense ROBERT HOLLAND Wing JOSEPH MEDEIROS Defense AFTER THE BALL WAS AFTER THE BALL WAS OVER, with rackets poised the East Providence Tennis Team of 1954, swung into action. The Track men could well use this song as their theme. These hardy boys, under the coaching of Mr. Bruce Britton, braved the cold winds and the sharp air to bring the notes of glory to East Providence High School. The winning spirit of our team has resulted in the defeat of two of our strongest opponents, La Salle Academy and Moses Brown School. Another fine showing was made at the Relay Carnival, which was held at Hope High Shool. Among the five teams participating, the East Providence track men came in second. The squad was small in number, consisting of such seniors as Kenneth Allen, Gilbert Carpenter, Gerard Gelinas, Ross McCarthy, Everett McDaniel, Raymond Smith, James Warren, Allen Monroe, and Captain Robert Mairs. Out team well re- presented our shool because there were in ad- dition to the seniors mentioned above, George Calise, James Dyer, Frank Hayward, Lawrence Kent, Rudolph Pyle, Walter Smith, and Willard English, who are our up and coming juniors. Also participating were five sophomores: Ronald Allen, Eugene Peck, John Rebello, Charles Reilly, and John Schwab. These last formed the nucleus of another championship team for the following year.
