An informal meeting of the Science Club. THE SCIENCE CLUB Keeping in time with the current science age, the students of East Providence form- ed a Science Club. Under the supervision of Mr. james A, Garvey, the group elected the following officers: Robert Tavares, presidentg Janice Wfhipple, vice presidentl Rich- ard XY'iberg, treasurerg and jean Nichols, secretary. Other members of this industrious group were jane and 'ludith Reilly, Elaine Berard. and Craig Drake. This group was started mainly to prepare projects for the Science Fair, which is held in March of each year at the Brown Gymnasium. These students worked individually and in groups to perfect several displays for this annual showing. The students achieving highest awards received points which go toward the Science Fair scholarship when graduating from high school. IIN L nie Miss Perkins begins the meeting of the French Club. LE CERCLE FRANCAIS Fourteen French-minded girls gathered every other Tuesday afternoon at the meeting of the French Club to discuss Franch customs and language. With the help of Miss Katherine Perl-zins, the advisor, even the most elementary of French phrases took on meaning, for all conversation was conducted in French. In spite of the humorous difficulties at the first meeting, the girls managed to understand enough to elect the following officers: Eileen Skober, presidentg Doris Ferria, vice presi- dent, Virginia Yuro, secretaryg Constance Loring, treasurerg and Beverly Wfade, social committee chairman. At the December meeting, Le Cercle Francais held a Christmas party at which all the members exchanged gifts. French carols were sung, and special music was provided by Virginia Yuro, who sang jeunes Filles. On Valentine's Day, time group tried their talent at composing French verse for Valen- tines which they exchangedg and in the spring Le Cercle Francais staged a big Mardi Gras. Time out from planning to pose for the photographer ..... THE ASSEMBLY COMMITTEE The hands of the big clock read 8:35 as we entered the auditorium, not a small gym- nasium in a junior high school crowded with hard uncomfortable chairs, but our very own spacious theater, equipped with soft cushioned chairs, carpeted floors, and pleasant- ly colored walls. We walked in to music, supplied either by records coming from the control room in the rear or by the organ before the stage. We sat down and awaited the program which acquainted us with our fellow students by means of education as well as entertainment. But did we realize the work of the patient, ever original assembly com- mittee advised by Mr. Leslie Carson?: Whether the program consisted of a pep rally for the big game , the jovial Dr. I.Q. quiz, Two for the Money, Wfinner Take All, a Talent Show, or Honors Day recog- nition of our Senior scholars, we always enjoyed our weekly assemblies and left each one looking forward to the next. Now, as the hands of the clock tell us that the school year is just about ended, we'd like to thank the assembly committee for the fine work theylve done to bring us the consistently entertaining and educational programs that we enjoyed throughout the year. The members of this committee were Patricia Checchia, Donna Russo, Richard Mosher, Robert Lee, Claire Nuttall, Ann Richardson, Ann Hogan, Peter Voccio and David johnson. C Auf' , I 1 J THE CHORUS Although music has changed from Mozart to be-bop it still holds its magic potent. Truly our chorus has added much to the enjoyment of the curriculum of our new school. Meeting four times a week under the direction of Miss Hope Smith, the six classes which comprised the chorus learned how to harmonize well, improve their technique of singing, and greatly deepen their appreciation of the great composers and their music. Tuesdays during home room period, the Special Chorus, consisting of thirty voices from the large group of one hundred twenty-five, met to study the more detailed techni- que of singing and to work on solos for the concerts. We shall never forget the wonderful singing the chorus gave us in the Christmas As- semblyg and those who listened to its Christmas recording on WHIM will agree that in our chorus we have a superior group of voices. sb -et XHFNQ, ' . 'Q xx YxE', . xfve A rehearsa of the c orus the of Miss Smith. In the spring we were again thrilled by a special assembly in which the chorus render- ed Latin songs and selections from Portugal, France, Spain, and Germany. The art department provided the background paintings for the assembly. As in other years the chorus made its annual recording for the Treasury Department,- United States Savings Bonds Division, in cooperation with station WEAN. Recorded in April, the program is broadcast the following fall. Through the school year the chorus and its soloists have participated in various other assemblies. The program presented at Easter was a wonderful example of this. Through their many efforts, the chorus certainly has proved that music, like time, is a never ending, ever lasting, part of our lives. s S. . . , -4J:.?, Nh sw. Because of increased membership, a sophomore club was started later in the year. Richard Mosher was the capable and active president of the senior club. Asa sisting him were the following: Paul johnson, vice president. Richard Arruda, secretary, Raymond Reid. treasurer, Everett Chapman, chaplain, and Paul Henault, scribe. The group was guided by Mr. Ralph E. Miller. As in the past, the club sent boys to the Older Boys' Conference in Holyoke, Massachusetts. The delegates. Dich Mosh- er, Paul johnson, Dick King, Bill Davis, Dick Arruda and joe DaRocha, heard one of the finest guidance professors in the country, Doctor Frank B. Slutz of Day- ton, Ohio. They also enjoyed the Satuiuay night game. the lavish banquet, discussion groups, and the opportunity to meet other Hi-Y members from New England. On the social calendar, the Hi-Y ran the annual Hi-Y-Hi-Tri Minstrel, and placed a clever skit in the jabberwock. A mystery ride. a dance planned by social chairman Dick King, and a chicken pie sale boosted the profits of the club and were grand fun, The members of the basketball team, Bob Tucker. Edric Bates. Dick King, Fred Sunderland, Dick Mosher and Bill Davis, had a very successful year, winning their most decisive victory 37 to 11 over Saint Marks Church team. At their meetings, held at Central junior High School, the boys were entertained and informed by guest speakers, and through movies on dating, armed service, college life, etiquette, and sports. Throughout the year this club sponsor- ed various activities, including dances, the biggest of which was the Christmas Formal held in our school cafeteria. It was planned by the social committee which included jane Ormiston, jane Berghman, Helen Flanders, Barbara john- son, Virginia Healy, Dorothy Carlson, and Claire Nuttall, who served as chair man The dance was a bi success and a ' S good time was had by all who attended it. This year the girls attended lectures given at the Y.W.C.A. to help them in planning their future. The group has learned how to take care of plants, and how to root cuttings and grow plants from seeds. They have talked and learned about the different kinds of plant media At Christmas time the group worked together to make Christmas wreathes, dish gar- dens, and other decorations. Although the team was not successful as far as vic- tories were concerned, every player lived up to the East Providence traditions of sportsmanship. E. P.'s first non-league game turned out 9-O, in favor of Aldrich. The following week we bounced back to down Gorton 28-15. The first league games ended with East Providence losing to Pawtucket East 13-7 and then defeating Hope 7-0. The Townies were outweighed and outscored the following week by Mount Pleasant, 35-7. In their next three games, the Townies suffered defeats from St. Raphael 19-6, f 1 'Lf' I .1 ii THE FOOTBALL COACHING STAFF Rogers 20-14. and Central'15-0. Cranston, getting off to a good start in the first half, overcame the Townies 26-O, The traditional Thanksgiving Day rivalry with LaSalle Academy ended with E. P. on the short end of a 24,0 score, although the team showed great spirit. For the thirteen senior members of the team, the turkey-day game was their last for their Alma Mater. The players who graduated were joseph Arruda and Raymond Smith, co-captains, john Clark, Robert Glover, Richard King, Coleman Levine, Antone Oliveira, joseph Pacheco, Edward Pezzelli, Harvey Read, Daniel Traficante, john Veader, and Robert White. The cheers have died. A team has been disband- ed, and another will rise in its place. Yet these boys of the 1953 football team have been our personal heroes. With the superb performance of our goalies Bob Peterson, Ray Fitton, and Carl Hewes and the excellent defense work of Harvey Read, Wfalter Bury, Carl johnson, Ed Rosen, Charles Hall, and 'lim Devaney it was no wonder that the TOWNIES made a successful bid for the hockey play-offs for the third con- secutive season. In the quarter finals we were out-scored by LaSalle Qin a total goal seriesj and thereby eliminated from competition in the semi-finals. For the six years the Townies have made the play-offs. Because of participation in other activities, Harvey Read was not on the squad. This was another serious reason for loss of power by the team. Although the previous misfortunes were true, we still had veterans such as fleet- footed Ken Allen and Edward Amerantes. Several very able, up and coming sophomore runners joined the squad and proved to be a threat in sozne of the big meets. In this group Coach Britton depended upon Bob Murphy, George Calise, Dick Dias, and Bill English. These boys will be a strong fac- tor in bringing victories to East Providence in future years. Yes, our new high school is equipped with a beautiful, gigantic swimming pool. Swimming is part of our regular gym schedule, with separate girls and boys classes meeting once a week. We are fortunate in having able instructors: Mr. Roy Watmough, who instructs the boys, with Mrs. Alice Sullivan and Mrs. Dorothy Klenieuski as the girls instructors. Their aims are to teach every pupil swimming and the importance of water safety. Our spacious, multi-colored natatorium forms a separate section apart from the gym, so that it may be used for separate outside activities. The seating capacity in the bleachers is three hundred and fifty. The pool itself is seventy five feet long and thirty five feet wide. The depth at the shallowest part is three and one half feet. The floor of the pool is set off with white lines for racing. The high diving board is three meters high, and the low board is one meter high. The temperature of the water is maintained at SQ degrees while that of the bleachers is set for 70 degrees so that both swimmers and spectators are equally comfortable. Because of such wonderful facilities, everyone certainly enjoys swimming classes. It is hoped and expected that every student will learn to swim. r '-' Sl'-l f f-'--Yu. Many new sophomores came out for the team along with junior and senior yearlings. The sopho- mores including George Calise, jim Dyer, Bill English and juniors Ken Allen, Bob Mairs, Jim Warren, Ben Flanagan, Ray Parent, Gil Carpenter, Bob Clark, and Art An- thony gave support to seniors Ray Reid, Art Hancock, jim Souza, Tony Oliveira, and Wilbur Dorsey. One of the biggest upsets of the year by the Townie runners was the defeat of Hope High Schools team, last year's indoor and outdoor champions. The team was not the most powerful in the state but it made many good showings. The reasons for these were the coaching of Bruce Britton and the hard work of the boys themselves. The team was much stronger than last year in many positions. It had four men on the shot put to one man last year. The same held true with the 100 yd. This year the team placed fourth in the state meet at Hope Field. Next year it is hoped that we will do even better with the help of the sophomores and juniors already on the squad. The boys deserve a great deal of credit for their effort and the improvement which augurs well for next year. 'TTT MA JORETTES As the years have passed by, East Providence students have delighted in seeing the colorful, high-stepping majorettes strutting down the field at our football games and performing at rally assemblies. Seniors for the 1952-53 season were Rosemarie Corolla, vivacious captain, and pert Carolyn Weddell. Shirley Mercurio, Anna Lee Chin, Evelyn Rocha, and Jane Berghman were the juniors who completed the group. Besides participating in the usual parades and sporting events, the girls performed at such affairs as the assembly of Senior Class Elections, the Dedications of the Swimming Pool, and the All State Band Festival. This autumn, a great honor was bestowed upon the majorettes when they marched with the band at the Boston University game in Fenway Park. Many new features were added this year. Some of these innovations may be attributed to their new advisor, Mrs. Sullivan. The majorettes and cheerleaders, together with the band, formed an arch through which the football players ran at the beginning of each game. They also put red and white streamers on their batons, which added sparkle and color. They joined the band in performing skits at the games, and, in keeping with the latest dance steps, added the fast jitterbug to their routine. Pert! High stepping! Snappy! Attractive! Colorful! Sparkling! N0 other words could describe our effervescent majorettes of 1953. They will never be forgotten in the years to come. In each win it was the sharp shooting of all- Stater Harry Chaplin which led the determined Townies. john Clark captained the squad, one of the largest, numerically, in EP. history. The squad was composed mostly of seniors, with six men falling in that category: john Clark, Harry Chaplin, Ronny Walker, joe Arruda, Ed Sutton, and Paul DeLomba. Without doubt the team will sorely miss these boys upon graduation. However, with juniors Steve DeAquair, Jack Ribiero, and Bob Nuttall, and sophomores Len Walker, B'll 1 Chaplin, Lee Edmonds, Gill Harris, and Gary Peterson, the Townies can be expected to do well in their league for the next few years. As usual, Coach Clifford B. Good, the veteran mastermind of the team provided the know-how and drive which were responsible for the team's impressive and credit- able showing. f ! 'CJ 'N p f . I 1 I EAST PROVIDENCE 'WRESTLING CHAMPS WRESTLING TEAM Under the supervision of Coach jim Whittaker, the 1953 wrestling team ended a rugged but successful season by winning the state championship. The boys started their schedule with powerful victories over the top contenders in the league. Our mat men defeated Mount Pleasant, 25-20 and Central, 27-17 in the first match and 21-17 in a second match. Regulars on the team who graduated were Captain Edward Chubby Amerantes, Robert Hoard, Richard Gibeau, and Anthony Piquette. Seniors who participated in wrestling during the 1953 season only were Raymond Smith, Alfred Pullano, and joseph Pacheco. Chubby Amerantes wound up his season by winning the New England title in the 115 pound class. The outlook for next year is extremely good. juniors Owen Driscoll, Everett Mc- Daniels, and Robert Tavares are expected to participate. Bolstering them will be sopho- mores Anthony Texiera and james Souza, The Crimson staff would like to express their best wishes to Coach XY'hittaker and his team as they strive to maintain a dominant position in Rhode Island wrestling. avr. ,.a..
