These boys had to overcome the big handicap of being very inexperienced, and though the record that they made for our school was not sensational, it nevertheless was pretty good. The team was taught the important phases of the game by James Vitsas, who worked very hard with them. The boys tried to do their best. With each game they became better, and near the end of the season they were playing very good ball. The best game of the year for our Junior Varsity team was played against Wilmerding on our home Hoot. From the beginning of the game our team was ahead, and we led at the half by eight points. Throughout the second half we protected this lead, and we added to it so that when the final whistle blew, our team won by a Z9-Z2 score. Since the whole team will be back next year, they are looking forward to a very good season, for they have gained valuable experience and ar: anxious to get started again. BASEBALL Even though baseball is rated the most popu- lar sport, it has been an on again--off again sport in our high school, enjoying its most suc- cessful years between 1926 and 1930 when our school was young. Even then its success was lim- ited, and it did not endure. Because the sport was not played regularly. it was impossible to keep the boys interested. In 1939, it was revived and was kept up for a few years, but with the war it was abandoned once more. Mr. Dom Rich started baseball again when he became coach, and last year Mr. Vitsas put out a team even though the boys were inexperi- enced and had to be taught the fundamentals of the game. This team, however, did create interest in the sport, and this season looms to be a good one, for the boys are anxiously awaiting the call for candidates, and Mr. Vitsas will get a large turnout. TRACK Track, like baseball, is another sport that has not received too much attention at East Pittsburgh and the little success achieved was in the school's earlier years. In 1927 Cornelius Jones, then a Sophomore, won the 100-yard sprint when he tied the previous record of 11 seconds at the A1- legheny County Annual Meet. We turned out several other good track men before the sport was dropped from our inter-scholastic list.
