TO THE STUDENTS: Y OU are the theme of this epoch. Froin the sophisticated freshman to the bewildered senior, each student, whether sleeping in civics or saying: four lines in the operetta, has helped to create the l947 EPOCH. Therefore, we have used through- out the book, a boy and girl symbolic of the stue dents in general-symbolic of your participation in social events, clubs, sports, and studies some- timesssymbolic of the fact that, at E.P.C.H,S., there is equal CIIHIICG to succeed in any field, whether it be athletic, academic, or social. The most in- spiring and surprising feature was that the boys stayed out for the team the entire football season. There were eight scheduled games. The squad won two, tied one, and lost five. We lost close games to Manual 7-6, Pekin 6-0, and Spalding 13-2. We are looking forward to seeing many of this group on the varsity squad in 1947. Jim Kazense was leading passer With Art Davis on the receiving end of the passes. Both are freshmen. All 46 members had action on the field in one game or an- other. Players carrying the bulk of the attack were Herschel Roberson, Bill Payne, Jim Kazense, Jerry Webb with Charles Vinson in the backfield. Other players were John Bolin, Art Davis, Ed Heppe, George Kunkle, Don Aldag, George Burton, Elmer Giebel- lfiusen, Joe Miles, Clayton Irmeger, Harlan Moushon. Don Jackson, Kenneth Hawbeck- er, Ray Barnes, and Eldon Schoedel. The most inspiring game was against Morton. With the score 13-7 against East Peoria, Kazenise rifled a pass to Art Davis in the end zone, with but twenty seconds to left to play and then throwing another pass to Elmer Giebelhausen for the extra point, East Peoria winning 14-13. Much is expected from these boys in the future. FRESHMAN-SOPHONIORE BASKETBALL-First Row, left to right: Ed Heppe, Junk Boynton. .Im-k Smith, XN'illi:nm Wm-ilisls-in. Vvilylll? Alumliuugll. The squad was composed of about twenty members. Boys who played in most games were: John Bolin, Fred Reinholdt, Jerry Alumbaugh, Charles Vinson, Art Mosher, Alan Allison, Cliff Stegmaier, Leonard Walraven, Jack Boynton, Bill Payne, Art Davis, Don Aldag, Ed Heppe, George Kunkle, Bill Weinstein, Jack Smith, Bill Dowell, Tom Grabill, Howard Almasy, Nicolo Irrera. Much should be expected of these boys next season, if the boys put forth a good deal of effort to better their playing with hard practice and good training rules well kept. Boys will improve if they try hard to carry out fundamentals of the game they have been taught. 1946 BASEBALL SQUAD-Flrst Flow, left to rlght: Ralph Shaw, Ralph Beam, Don Mc-Culley, Bill Stout, Eddie l'H'l'WSlk'l', Clifton Grahill, liill Martin. East Peoria bowed to Mt. Pulaski at Springfield in Sectional play 5 to 3. Tom Alexander was the leading pitcher throughout the season, pitching two one-hit games and one three-hit game. Paul Fritz handled the catching chores and along with Luke Spinder was the leading base stealer. The Varsity included Bill Dowell at first, Paul Horton at second, Petri at short- stop, Don Maloney at third. The outfield consisted of Loren Tangman in left, Luke Spinder in center, and Charles Mosher in right. Other letter winners were Jack Roberts, Bob Carson, Bob Herren, Don McCulley, Bill Martin, and Ralph Beam. The most unusual game of the year was played at Metamora. Tom Alexander hit a ball to the outfield with one man on. The ball was lost in the grass and Tom scamp- ered in with a home run, winning 2 to 0. 'Q . KING Our first flight was in the realm of our imagination-to plan a float for the home- coming parade. The result is shown in the Epoch picture. Most of us are interested in aeronautics because we wish to some day pilot our own planeg also, because we belleve there are career opportunlties in a1rplane mechan- ics, designing, radio and radar, and navigation. Since progress in aviation is so rapid we find very interesting the reports on current inventions, new models, plans for expansion, and how aviation is changing our world. A never-to-be-forgotten event was the staging of a mock aerial dogfightn be- tween two gas model plans flown by Mr. Baldridge and Mr. Mowry who also demonstrat- ed other models. Our aeronautics library received forty books covering every phase of aviation from the War Department. Capt. John Ranney, a former aero club member, gave us many valuable pointers and the wisdom gained from 56 combat missions as a B-25 pilot against the Japs. Major Jack Timken, a veteran pilot of a B-17 over Europe and now on the fac- ulty, gave us a thrill by zooming over the school in a school acquired army training plane-an event forecasting the educational advantages and opportunities for future aviation students of E.P.C.H.S. Membership in Junior N.R.A. Clubs is made up of boys and girls eighteen years or younger. Junior riflemen who have won the Expert Riflemen Award may become In- dividual Senior Members of the association after reaching their eighteenth birthday. Shooting as a sport is typically American. The saga of American riflemen is a glorious heritage for the modern target shooter, being linked eternally with great names in the history of this nation. There is no end to the list of sharpshooting Amer- icans and their deeds: Daniel Boone, Davy Crockett, Rodger's Rangers, Morgan's Rifle- men, and those men whose records were made at Lexington and Concord, King's Moun- tain, Chateau Thierry, Argonne, Wake Island, Bataan, Bastogne. Shooting as a sport contributes to a social life and promotes the ideals of careful- ness, sportsmanship, honesty, perseverance, patience, self-control. Shooting is fun. The first aim of the club is to teach young boys and girls how to handle firearms safely. Safety through skill. Rifle shooting is not a spectator sport, everyone is a player gaining an understanding of human nature and learning to adapt himself to new situations and conditions. The club held its formal Charter presentation during the latter part of the sec- ond semester, and, as the first year is the beginning season, the club will be completely organized and set up for the future due to the effort and initiative of charter members. MISS FULTON Gene Sharp was formerly the Secretary-Treasurer but he moved and Loris was elected to take his place. In the homecoming parade we all were Roman togas. Four members carried a stretcher on which we had a large doll all bandaged and we carried a large sign which said Poor Washington. Washington high was our opponent at the homecoming game. At the meetings we play many Roman games. We sing songs in Latin. At Christ- mas we sang all of the carols in Latin. We have Roman plays and pantomimes. At one meeting we had a S64 quiz program. The questions were about Latin. We had numerous sponsors. Don Miller was the Master of Ceremonies. At the February meeting we made valentines and put them all in a box. Then we drew them out and got someone else's. We have drawn up a Latin Club constitution which consists of the qualifications for members, purposes of the club, and initiation proceedings for new members. There were about thirty people at the Latin Club party which was held on the evening of January 17. It was in the form of a Roman banquet. We all wore togas. We had a six-course dinner. We ate with our fingers as the Romans did. We gave toasts and one of the new members had to be the slave and bring the food in and carry it around the table. We played games and danced. For the decorations we had purple and white. The menus were in the form of little scrolls. They were written in Latin and we had to figure them out. The last event of the year was the club picnic at Fon Du Lac park. LATIN CLUB Left to Right: 121-nv Shairp, limi liflillm-V. Patsy tiny. KNEZOVICH This club is somewhat different from others because to be eligible one must have earned a school letter in some sport. The ambition of every boy in school should be to earn a school letter in some sport and to become a member of this club. This club is a supporter of good clean sportsmanship and tries to set an example for the rest of the students in school. The Lettermen's Club has started something new this year in the school halls. Their duties as marshals are to keep the halls clean and keep other students from loiter- ing in the halls. It's a big hit with the teachers and the students. A chicken dinner in honor of all lettermen is held every year. The boys like to eat as much or more than they like to play their favorite sport. The money they received for selling the basketball pins helps pay for the meal. The Lettermen wish to thank ev- eryone who bought a pin. The aims of this club are: a fellow teammate may be faster than youg he may be a better shot or a more clever passerg he may be a better blocker or a more clever run- nerg he may be a better offensive player than a defensive playerg and he might be tall- er and heavier-but he should not be your superior in team spirit, fight, determination, ambition, and character. A good winner as Well as a good loser. Good things are made to be shared-so is playing the game. A player not on his toes, soon finds himself a heel. Th Editors . MR. LOGUE The Movie Club was originated in 1945 by our principal, Mr. Moore. The idea of the club was to teach students how to run the movie pro- jector, so it would be possible to have persons running the machine at all hours of the day. In 1945 the club membership was limited to fifty boys. The second year girls were allowed to join. We learn about still and motion pictures, silent and sound, and strip and slide. All these machines are comparatively simple when you learn their principle. The members are taught how inflammable and non-inflammable films are made, how to handle the film, and how to distinguish silent from sound if it isn't marked. We are also taught how to care for film as it is sensi- tive and expensive. The Movie Club is very educational and is a lot of fun. People should learn about movies whether they belong to the Movie Club or not. l'lll4ISllJl'IN'I' Vlfllfl-l'Rl'lSllll'IN'l' Sl'ltlRl'l'l'AliY 'l'lil+lASlllllCli l'li0tlliAM CHAIRMAN l'IlBl.ltTl'l'Y CHAIRMAN OFFICERS NANCY HARTZ Wl'INDEl,L FREY JANE PRESTON . We must remember first of all that we are directly connected with the Y.W.C.A.. and that our purpose is 'I'o build a fellowship of women and girls devoted to the task of realizing i11 our common life those ideals of personal and social living to which we are committed by our faith as Christians. In this en- deavor we seek to understand Jesus, to share his love for all people and to grow in the knowledge and love of God. We remember that things started off in a big way in September, because it was then that we had our club name changed from Girl Reserves to Y 1'eens. Making posters and getting ready for the homecoming parade came next. I don't think any of us will forget the trouble we had until the parade was over. In November we had our Thanksgiving baskets. We collected and delivered the food that was given by other members ot' the student body. Later. a World Fellowship dinner was l1eld at which we served several dishes typical of all countries. Christmas was remembered for a lot of things. the party we had, the candles that melted all over the table. the games. and the Ch1'istmas carols that were sung. The Sweetheart Hop came in February and was a very big event. Plans were made during .Ianuary and the climax came with the crowning of the King and Queen. In May we had our last meeting, to honor the Seniors. 1'Im:l':1x'i11gs Ivy Pontiac- I+Zm.:'l':1vii1g' and Electroiyping Po., t'I1ii-ago. Illinois.
