Standing: Mr. John Pantano-f-Acting Superintendent, Mr. Lambert DeNooyer-Secretary to Board. The fulfillment of East Paterson's greatest dream into its proudest achievement-the erection of our beautiful High School-has taken place under the dedicated efforts of the members of our Board of Education. These men have secured every educational opportunity for the students and have es- tablished policies which fairly and understandingly have considered the needs of each individual. BOARD OF ED C T10 Former Superintendent MR. THOMAS A. SHAHEEN On behalf of all the students we extend a cordial welcome to Mr. Pantano who has been filling the position of Superintendent since January 1. In the short time that he has been with us he has won many loyal friends and admirers. Throughout our school years, Mr. Shaheen has kept a close interest on every phase of the school day. We wish him the best of every- thing in his new position and thank him for his efforts in our behalf. His close observation of our school life and his deep interest in every aspect of it has developed friendship out of leadership. Because of this close association, our farewells were made more difficult. Acting Superintendent MR. JOHN PANTANO Principal Dear Graduates, You have the rare privilege and dis- tinction of being a member of the first graduating class of the East Paterson Memorial High School. Three years ago most of you joined us as sophomores, after completing your ninth year at Lodi High School. ln these three years, the members of our stall have seen you accept an in- creasing amount of responsibility in the organization and management of student affairs. You have helped lay the foundation upon which succeeding classes may build a structure which provides for ever-increasing responsi- bilities in the government of school and student affairs. -7 sagem ft 1- A LEVI F. OLSON Principal Now you have an even greater re- sponsibility. You will be our first rep- resentatives in college, trade schools, or the world of Work. Business . . lndustry . . . East Patersonis ideal location, close to major ports and markets, and its excellent highways and transportation facilities have had a decisive effect on its industrial and commercial growth. The di- versified businesses and industries not only provide many employ- ment opportunities in the Bor- ough, but also help it maintain an attractive, equitable tax structure. A new Municipal Building, completed in 1957, houses not only all executive offices, meeting rooms and Police Department, but the Borough's Free Public Li- brary as well. Despite the rapid growth, the Borough has kept its building orderly and its industry diversi- fied through intelligent exercise of its Building Code and Zoning Ordinance. ff, I 5 -5 K, E A-:IQ -v ix- Mt 'Ml wo .1 thu 'TNNN' N, 4 ,, , wi . , mf Ky M 1 1-'1,i 49' 'Li-f'J-VK' HU 'HTH' MM 'wwf P' NL M, R 'filo ,AY M-Q. if mr 'L A iv i Vv'f 'W 4 L - ' :NYM XML X Nw ' -:ur -'wr KK . - WVP ,:x!'?M'u vfffwvvbf rx fkhf, 4 ,Uk 3 !a.7-1' ,ff-f., nf' '-'-fifsevz.-if . I XX ik WRX . CLASS HISTORY We, the senior class of 1960, have come a long way, starting as lowly freshmen one September morning in Lodi High School. High school life was exciting and also bewildering. Upper- classmen were constantly trying to con- vince us to buy passes for the swimming pool and elevator, which, to our surprise, didnit exist. We experienced our first en- counter with Shakespeare in his Twelfth N ight, read Ivanhoe, and somehow mud- dled through Algebra l. KNOW 2x+y should give me something-l wonder what?', Hours were spent in the library, looking up history questions and for last minute cramming. We bade farewell to Lodi, to its teachers and students, at the end of our freshman year. The time had come to enter our own high school in East Paterson. We'll never forget those first weeks of walking around boards, cans of paint, assorted tools, and workmen in the halls. If you forgot where your next class was meeting, it was safe to join a gym class, outdoors. All this turmoil came to an end as our beautiful school was completed. As soph- omores we had to conquer biology, Julius Caesar, shorthand and congru- ent triangles. In home economics classes there were endless hatches of peanut hut- ter cookies to make and make and make. Our annual faculty-student game will al- ways he remembered because of our Star faculty player, Mr. Lipset. He was really doing fine--bouncing the basketball down the length of the court, when a student, unknown to him, took the ball away. The undaunted teacher' went right on down the court, bouncing nothing! But any- thing for a good cause, and that cause was the scholarship fund. East Paterson was introduced to its first pep rally, com- plete with cheerleaders and majorettes, who had practiced for weeks. There was a fall and a few dropped batons, hut that really didn't matter. Everyone sang and cheered until hoarse. We presented an operetta 'rspringsmec and afterwards admitted the performance had been worth all the long rehearsals. Heavenly shades of night are falling--lt's Twi- light Time . . . echoed from the gym the night of the Sophomore Hop, a me- morable night. As juniors we went around the school with one hand extended in front for weeks, for all to see our shiny red and gold rings. To each underclassman was uttered a superior, uSee! We found , 1 Q 'W':ck -Jfwfu., Lodi High School-where we spent our freshnien year our main problems to be chemistry, English grammar, and history tests. From the chem. room came a voice say- ing, HPlease be careful and don't drop any more test tubesf' followed by, Open those windows quickly, and the most horrible smells. We were told in English class that anyone could learn grammar if he just applied himself! An operetta, Meet Arizona was produced with huge Western splendor and made us all wish we were around a blazing campfire. Our courageous women teachers exhibited their skills in an ole Charlston and the male faculty members performed a bal- let number in a talent show held in the auditorium. What they lacked in grace they made up for in humor with their pink costumes, toe shoes, and tiny bask- ets of roses. Another dramatic highlight was '6Arsenic and Old Lace,'7 a comedy about two little old ladies who went about poisoning people. This was a year for elections. After weeks of campaigning with posters such as, '6Creat googa mooga, Vote for Ket Rugaf' and buttons worn proclaiming choices, and speeches, Stud- ent Council and Senior Class officers were elected. Plans for the Junior Prom were starting to take shape. '6Chanson de Parisw was the theme and we danced and dined in the atmosphere of Paris cafes at dusk. The King and Queen, Bruce Kobis and ,lo-Ann Pelak ruled over a wonderful evening. A chapter of the National Honor Society was formed and twenty-six proud juniors were elected to it. Then that memorable day finally came when each of us could walk through the front door and say, 'il am a senior. The honor of being a senior brought many new problems with which to contend: col- lege application blanks to fill out, inter- views for jobs, scholarships, visits to the draft board, and worst of all, the wait- f W-wnwhl. 5 ' 7 East Paterson Memorial High School-here we have the distinction of being the first graduating class. ing. MDear Ruth, a wartime comedy was prepared by the Dramatics Club, giving East Patersonls future Barrymores their big chance. We walked through our classes chanting, Double bubble, toil and trouble . . . while we relived Mac- beth's tragic life. And we uttered that silly inevitable question, What's a term paper? We soon found out, and seemed to be writing them ever since. One high- light of our sports activities was a bonfire held the night before our last football game. As we stood around the high burn- ing fire, the captain of our football team burned a Wayne player in el-ligy. Judy Osborn was chosen to be the Football Queen by the Varsity Club and looked lovely as she pinned corsages on the cheerleaders and majorettes at the last game. We enjoyed a delicious dinner at our annual Fall Awards Banquet, when players, cheerleaders, A and majorettes were presented with letters. One of our former teachers, Nancy Uber, was seri- ously injured in an automobile accident, and our men's faculty together with Tea- neck's faculty played a benefit game in her honor. We had such a warm feeling inside, knowing we had helped someone, and we were victorious in the game. Whenever we hear Stardust it will re- mind us of the Senior Ball held in the Westmount Country Club. In a setting of candles and flowers -Susan Kollar was crowned Queen. The time of the Senior Play was approaching, along with many sleepless nights. Campus Quarantine was a rollicking success enjoyed by all. We met one new character---a gorgeous blonde named Steve! A little bit of Ire- land came to East Paterson as our music department presented the musical com- edy Finian's Rainbow. Early in May we boarded buses bound for Washington--the time for our senior trip had come at last. Everything we did and saw was just wonderful and we began to realize this would soon be over, our senior year was reaching its end. A ban- quet was held for seniors before grad- uation and that very special evening was concluded all too soon. Before we 'knew it, graduation and its festivities were over. The time had come for us to part after four years of being together. We will never forget these faces, and classes, or our schoolg for these memories will always remain a part of us. We will look back on them with fondness and a smile, and though we do not know what lies ahead, wciwill go forth with faith to take our place in the world of tomorrow.
