I I The same year that we entered this institution of learn- ing as frightened, green, little Freshmen, Mr. Blackburn also entered as a rookie teacher. Two years later, as Juniors, we asked him to be our advisor. He accepted and gave us finvaluable help in making our prom a success, besides many other functions. This year we again asked him to fill that capacity. Once more he accepted and, if possible, even surpassed last year's record in helping to make our senior year one that we will long remember. Now comes the time for our class to become a memory, but fortunately for the school, he will remain. However, as a final token of appreciation for his sympathetic help and understanding we, the Class of 1954, desire to dedicate our yearbook, the Ephanian, to Mr. Blackburn. Compliments of Ina's Restaurant Compliments of Brown's Restaurant 29 60:44 Pzofeiecq Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen! This is Larry Hunston, your world-wide newscaster, bringing the inauguration ceremony of President-Elect Lawrence R. Springer over the nation-wide public address system. I am situated in a helicopter piloted by Clyde Kennedy, overlooking the steps of the White House. As you know, this broadcast is being presented through the courtesy gf Dudas' Kennels, owned and operated by C. Thomas udas. As I observe this immense congregation assembled for this momentous occasion, I recognize many outstanding personalities. Seated on the inaugural platform immediately behind the rostrum is the President's new cabinet: Sec. of Good Will, Jeanne Smith, Sec. of Smiles, Iva Grim, Sec. of Social Groups, Peg Jackson, Sec. of Internal Improve- ments, Dick Marshall, Secretaries of Music, Paul Rauch, Fred Bycroft, Dave Hause, Sec. of Sports, Dale Bird, Sec. of Health, Mary Marg Meek, Sec. of the Treasury, Edalene McConnell, Sec. of Food, Kay Rukenbrod, and Secretary of Education, Christina Kay. Scanning the congregation as it assembles before the platform, I see many old classmates of the President. There is a group of secretaries from a convention in Philadelphia visiting here today. Among the group I see Ruth Bailey, Norma White, and Marilyn Stuart. I also see the National Basketball team coach John Gillooly and several of his famous stars, including Rick Brook, John Bevo Herbert, Bob Farmer 'Knight and John Dexter Whitehouse. These fellows are having good luck, winning their last 50 games in a row. One of them is escorting the famed Powers model, Marlene 'Tusar, who is wearing a gown created by Marilyn Whalen, nationally-known women's fashion designer. Ladies and gentlemen! Hold onto your hats. There's a disturbance at the edge of the crowd. A spaceship has just landed. The crowd has turned their attention from the platform and are now watching these spacemen emerge from their spaceship. I can barely make out their faces through their helmets. But I can see that among them are Harold Strohecker, Glenn Saviers, Dick Osberg, Willis Barnhart and Carl Black. They say that these men have discovered a new planet and named it Unity in honor of their old home town. As they are extolling the wonders of their planet to the interested bystanders, three enthusiastic girls come forth from the crowd to volunteer to go back with these men to Unity I beleive they are Joan Lambright, Alice McElroy, and Barbara Freer. Yes, yes, that's who they are. Bob Mercer has just come out of the baggage compartment of the spaceship in a new car which must have been designed on Unity. What design, what lines! ! ! It's a good thing that Gail Merwin is here to report on all the happenings of this momentous occasion. There will undoubtedly be a big story in her newspaper, the TIMES There are some familiar faces. I believe one is Peggy Gray. She has a package in her hands which she says is a tie that she knitted. She's going now to give it to the President. She's talking to Shirley Harrold, who is a dietitian for Campbells, and Nettie Graves, a story writer for some of the country's well-known magazines. Right behind them are two buyers from New York stores-Vivian Hughes of Gimbel's and Anita Morey, of Macey's. They are probably discussing spring fashions There are some more sports celebrities. John Hawk, coach of Army, and Tom Seiter, coach of Navy, seem to be arguing about who will win the annual classic. I see several married couples roaming through the crowd. There are Mrs. Mary Ann Pappas Maple and her husband, Jack Wolfe and his wife, the former Janet I-Iulton, and Mrs. Phyllis Luek Powell and husband Dorothy Annico Hogue and her husband and their eight children are with them. They evidently hadn't heard of Marietta Weigle's nation-wide baby-sitting agency. The others had, however, and left their children in capable hands so they could be here today. I see a lady in a very beautiful mink coat. Why, it's Klare Whitaker. I understand she married a prosperous mink farmer. While waiting for this parade to start, I've been drink- ing coffee donated by Brown's Restaurants, Inc., which are owned by Joyce and Dorothy Brown. The coffee, of course, comes from the A 81 P Store, which is now owned by Don Summers and managed by Ronnie Fuller and Kenny McGuckin who all got their start back in East Palestine, Ohio. Speaking of East Palestine, I understand that they are talking of combining Enon, Pa. and East Palestine into one big shopping district. Stores have been expanding and increasing lately, and these plans are being dis- cussed by the mayors, Susie Frederick of East Palestine, and Brandt Riddle of Enon. Some opinions have been aired about this plan. One was that of Kenny Nutter, the principal of East Palestine's High School, who is highly in favor of this. There's good old Bill Bingham giving out helium-filled balloons to all the kiddies here today. These balloons have a picture of the President on them. They can be bought in any of his 5 8: 10's for only 5c a piece. I failed to mention that our system of communication from the plane to the ground has been provided by Patsy Lindner, head of Bell Telephone Company. Here it comes, finally, ladies and gentlemen. The parade is beginriing to move. While it's approaching I have just enough time to tell you of the bar-b-que that is to be held this evening on the lawn of the White House for all old classmates of East Palestine High School. The food is being prepared by Sandra Doran, who is now head of the Heinz Company. I understand that Ed Cope, head of Rexall Drug Stores, is supplying bicarbonate of soda, while Georgiann Gorby, a famous chemist, is sending over a new type of headache pills for those who need them after the excitement of the day and the food of the bar-b-que. There will be dancing after the bar- b-que under the direction of Shirley Black and Janie Burkey, both widely-known dancing teachers. I've had it from good authority that Harold Cunning- ham, the owner of the Pittsburgh Pirates who helped them obtain their first pennant in years, will be at this bar-b-que tonight. Now here comes the parade. Heading it are a group of majorettes from the school of Gracie DiCarlo and Ruth Drummond. Now the President's car comes into view. By the way, all cars in this parade are being provided through the courtesy of Charlie McElroy, head of Gen- eral Motors Corporation. There he is, folks, the President-Elect Lawrence Roberts Springer! Incidentally, his car is being driven by Charlene Meek, womans national stock car champ- ion. On a motorcycle riding beside the President is Dorothy Chaplow, a secret service guard of the President In the other cars behind the President are Paul Woods, Vice-President-Elect, Joanne Cope, Secretary to the President, Arlene Dyke, who is with the Bureau of En- graving and Printing, Norma Manno, Secretary to Chief Justice Danny Flynn, and some high military officials. I see Mrs. Betty Burkey waving to her husband seated in one of these cars. All the people in the cars are wearing flowers donated by Norma Jean Hall, owner of Hall Greenhouses, Incorporated. All during this momentous occasion the flash bulbs of the cameras of Mary Lou McCown and Charleen Hall have been going off as fast as they could take pictures. They are taking these pictures for Davis, McCown and Hall Studios, Incorporated. And now, friends, I wish to remind you that all this commentary has been sponsored by C. Thomas Dudas' Dog Kennels. And as the parade goes out of sight around the corner, I shall have to leave you, so I, too can get ready for the bar-b-que being held at the White House. I'll see you at the next inauguration in 1976, when my good friend Howard Huston will be back from his trip around the world to help me broadcast. So long! They donate to the Boy Scout Drive and they do all the collecting in the school, such as for the Red Cross Drive, Steve Phillips Benefit and the Christmas Seal Drive. There is a visitation day at which time the Student Council divides into groups of four and visits other schools. A For the iirst time the Band has been able to go to every football game of the season. This was made possible through the donation from the Council to pay for the buses for transporta- tion. Y' J E. P. 13 Sebring 18 i' , Playing before a capacity home crowd, the E. P. 14 Leetonia 2 A record crowd turned out to watch the battle between the 1952 Tri-County Co- Champions on the Leetonia field. After yield- ing a first-minute safety, the Bulldogs power- ed their way to a convincing 14-2 triumph on the strength of a steady offense and a rugged defense. E. P. 33 Newton Falls 13 A mighty Bulldog defense proved the big factor in their return to the win column, yield- ing scores only in the early and late minutes of play. An 80 yard and a 25 yard scoring run with an intercepted pass by Bob Knight high- lighted. The feared Newton Falls passing attack was stopped by the consistent hard charging of the Bulldog forward wall. E. P. 13 Chester 14 Playing under a steaming October sun at Chester, the Bulldogs held a 13-0 halftime lead, but, playing without the service of backs Bob Knight and Curt Thompson, they faltered in the final two minutes of play. E. P. 27 Louisville 7 A victory over the visiting Louisville Leopards cinched the runner-up spot for the Bulldogs in the Tri-County. The savage tack- ling of the Brown and White defense was a key to the win, being sparked by Guard Har- old Strohecker and Linebacker Bird. Half- back John Gillooly was brilliant on both of- fense and defense. E. P. 34 Poland 21 In a free-scoring Tri-County contest, the Brown and White Bulldogs defeated Poland 34-21. A. vastly improved local offense regis- tered two quick touchdowns, the first a 40 yard sprint by Phillips, but led only 21-14 at halftime. The Crossfield blocking of All-Tri- County center John Herbert and End John Whitehouse helped bring home the win. E. P. 0 Columbiana 7 In the last thriller of the season, the unde- feated Clippers edged the Brown and White 7-0. The visiting Clippers scored their points in the early minutes on the strength of supe- rior speed. Fumbles stopped several Bulldog pushes and one in Columbiana territory prov- ed fatal. The local defense hit th'e Columbiana backs hard, holding them to their lowest score of the season. Bulldogs suffered their first loss in the last eight starts. The locals scored in the first quar- ter with the help of a recovered fumble by Guard Matt Stimac, but later fell behind 12-6. Sparked by Fullback Bob Knight, the Brown and White regained the lead, 13-12, in the final period, only to have Sebring score the winning tally on a pass in the waning minutes. E. P. 0 Lisbon 39 Playing before 4,000 fans at Lisbon, the gallant Bulldog squad outplayed a powerful Lisbon team for a whole quarter before bad breaks and Lisbon speed spelled defeat in a contest much harder fought than the score indicated. E. P. 19 Minerva 0 Playing their best game of the season, the Bulldogs combined a hard-hitting offense and an immovable defense to smother Minerva 19-0 on their field. Steve Phillips, the 128 pound sophomore, ran sensationally in the fullback spot as Quarterback Dave DeRhodes' clever offensive manuevers kept Minerva befuddled. The return of Denny Sutherin to end strengthened the defense, plus the bruis- ing tackling of All Tri-County tackle Dick Marshall and All-Tri-County linebacker Dale Bird, and Minerva was held to a total gain of 19 yards.
