The team, coached by John Reid cmd captained by Herb Gorby, won five games, lost three. and tied one. In the course of their nine game schedule, they scored 214 points while limiting their opponents to 115. The 214 points scored by the Bulldogs was one of the largest totals ever com- piled by a Brown and White grid team. When practice got under way the latter part of August, approximately forty boys answered Coach Reid's call. Of these, eight were lettermen returning from last year, to form the nucleus for this year's team. The team fielded by Coach Reid averaged about 160 I lbs. A fast, shitty backfield, operating behind a hard- 1 charging, aggressive line made the team a definite COACH JOHN REID threat to all opponents throughout the season. The Bulldogs opened their season at home by tieing a powerful Leetonia eleven 19 to 19. This proved to be the only blot on Leetonia's record as they went on to win all of their re- maining games. Following the opener, the Bulldogs scored victories over Sebring, Lisbon, Newell, Minerva, and Louisville. In the latter victory, the game-winning touchdown came in the last five seconds of play. East Pa1estine's three losses were sustained at the hands of Salem, Boardman, and Columbiana. In recognition of their fine, season-long performances, five boys were honored on the Tri-County teams. Herb Gorby, Ioe Nolan and Charlie Wade were selected on the first team, Harry McGahan landed a berth on the second team, and Alan Hill received honorable mention. By scoring a total of 112 points, Gorby, hard-driving fullback, was recognized by high school coaches and sports writers when the state selections were made, being given honor- able mention. This honor has never before been awarded to an East Palestine player. In summarizing the events of the past season, the team members feel that they owe the greater part of their success to their coach, Iohn Reid. It was through his tireless efforts that the boys developed the ability and the will to win, so necessary for a successful season. The final high point of the season was the annual football banquet at which Carroll Wid- does, head football coach of Ohio State University, was principal speaker. As a parting toast, the departing Seniors and those who face possible induction into the armed forces wish next year's Bulldog squad the success that is sure to come to them through hard play and good sportsmanship. A .1 Drum Major Director RAY KANNAL MISS PETERSON The band activities successfully got under way under the direction of Miss Kvetko. Many snappy football halftimes were cheered by the band's exhibitions of skill. Following marching season, Miss Kvetko was forced to retire due to poor health. The concert band was fortunate enough to have as their director Miss Peterson, an Ohio State graduate. As a result of Miss Peterson's initiative, a basketball band was organized, composed of volunteers from the regular band. Under Miss Peterson's able baton the concert band presented the success- ful Spring Concert, May 4th. Compliments of H. C. This year our school orchestra has increased a great deal both in number and activity. They have entertained in several assemblies and contributed considerably to the Spring Festival held May 4th. The group is making more complete use of the orchestra equipment avail- able. The orchestra has become an ambitious, progressive group. This Page Sponsored by East Palestine Building and Loan BASKETBALL The 1944-45 edition of the Brown and White basketball team com- piled a record of which the team cmd the student body can be justly proud. The Bulldogs made a decided comeback after a disastrous season last year, and won nine games while 'dropping the same number. This year's team, coached by Harry Laber, and captained by Dale Young, got off to a flying start by winning their first four games. Outstanding in these games, as far as scoring was concerned, was Alex Walker. However, Walker was inducted into the armed ser- vices and the Bulldogs went into a slump. They dropped their next five games before returning to the win column. Four consecutive wins followed but the fortunes of the Brown and White dipped again as another key man was lost to the armed services. This time it was COACH HARRY LABEB Ioe Nolan, who was just beginning to click. As a result of this, four of the last five games of the season went into the loss column. The last of these defeats came at the hands of Boardman in the Northeastern Ohio Sectional Basketball Tournament. The Bulldogs finished third in the Tri-County behind Columbiana and Boardman. All members of the team performed ,creclitably throughout the season, with Bobby Wade turning in an amazing performance in the Sectional Tournament. The team members feel that much of their success belongs to Coach Laber and they anticipate an even more suc- cessful season under his guidance next year. Several men who were counted upon for this year's team are now in the armed services, but eight lettermen return to form the nucleus of the squad. It is probable that we will again be weak in the dashes, just as we were last year, but the men who will represent us in the hurdles, weights, and broad jump look very promising. Herb Gorby and Charlie Wade, two Senior lettermen, will serve as Co-captains for this year's team. The other lettermen returning are Bob Wade, Earl Hosack, Iohnny Blair, Bill Welle- myer, Harry McGahan and Walter Jordan.
