RICH OCTOBER 15, 1955 0 The students of East Orange High School pay grate- ful tribute to the memory of Charles E. Rich, a custodian here since August, 1943, and the head since 1945. Through the years we shall recall his constant efforts for our physical well-being, no matter how careless and thoughtless we had been with our gum and paper scraps. And especially we shall remember his kindly smile and friendly greeting, even when he must have been suffering. We give him now our sincere thanks for his part in our education: the lessons of forbearance and friendliness. - IN MEMORIAM KILLED IN THE KOREAN JOHN RICHARD WILSON CHARLES EADS COON S ,............... Starting oil' the year with the election of Nancy Lee Geyer to the office of president, the G.A.A., under the guidance of Miss 'Edna Scott, has carried on. a most successful program. Wlith Diane Weber assuming the next highest office, and Dagmar Wintzei' and Carol Brauer taking on the responsibilities of secre- tary and hostess, respectively, the program was destined to succeed. Among other things, every one had a hilarious time at the annual picnic and swimming party held at Olympic Park in the spring. Any girl participating in an activity at least three times in one year is automatically a member of the group and has in store for her much fun and good companionship. 0 Row 1: B. Huguenin, C. THE SCHOOL YEAR 1953-1954 was a memorable one for East Orange High School students, and much of the credit for this can be given to the Student Council. Under the able leadership of Richard Feder fPresidentI, Robert Armento fVice-presidentl, Nancy Lee Geyer fSecretaryJ, and John Glennon fTreasu.rerJ, the Student Council proved itself to be an industrious and influential body. Every one who went to the annual picnic had a most enjoyable time, and the games and fire- side singing were pleasant ways in which to get acquainted with fellow members. The Rye Beach Boat Trip Committee, headed by Elaine Keller, very enthusiastically planned to try to bring back the trip which every one had enjoyed in the past, and this committee should be commended for its fine work. In order to have this trip restored, the committee sought to provide better supervision and organi- zation. While this plan was being formulated, other branches of the Student Council were equally busy. The Rally Committee kept close track of our football team, and at crucial mo- Page Ezgbty-Six ments of the season its rallies aroused a greater sense of school spirit and helped the team to become one of the foremost elevens in the state. The News and the Student Council took part in the annual Community Chest Drive and to- gether collected almost 352,000 within one week. Alan Sofield assumed leadership of the annual canned goods drive for the Orthopaedic Hos- pital, and Joan Carter, co-chairman of the Junior Red Cross Committee, headed the gift box drive. The canned goods campaign was successfulr, and in the latter drive there was a thirty-box increase over the number collected last year. For the first time in ten years, officers for all four classes were elected, the Election Committee, headed by Alex Froelich, established the new procedure and put it into working order. Many new ideas were absorbed by our Coun- cil's representatives at the Student Council Con- vention at Rutgers. With the able assistance of Miss Leinonen and Mr. Hitchner, this yearis Council made full use of these suggestionsg and it hopes that next year's Council will provide much service to the school and have all the luck in the world. SOCIAL COMMITTEE THE SOCIAL Commlrrss or 1953-1954, under the helpful guidance of Miss Leinonen, was headed by Teresa Wfomack fChairmanJ, Leona Taylor flflecorations Chairmanj, and Lorraine Benesta fSecretaryJ. Other members were Linda Yerg, Nancy Lee Geyer, Carol Fiore, Alex Froelich, Bill Bankson, Bill Honeker, George Stewart, Dave Stritmater, and Tom Leach. The first big social event of the year was the New Student F rolic. A talent show in the audi- torium, featuring some of the top talent in the school, cheers led by the cheerleaders, and re- freshments in the gym highlighted the festive event. lilany new acquaintances were made and all enjoyed themselves immensely. With the walls of the girls' gymnasium appro- priately decorated with corn stalks, pumpkins, and paper turkeys, the Harvest Hop will be remembered as one of the most enjoyable dances of the year. Fred Riecke and his Country Or- chestra supplied the entertainment, which in- cluded square and round dancing and amusing games. 1, ln honor of the .l unior Class, the Social Com- mittee sponsored, on the night of February 13, the .lunior Prom, its theme, Winter Festival and the A. S. Kreiger Society Orchestra. There was a good turnout for this annual dance, and everyone marveled at the beautiful decorations in the gym. The Social Committee appreciated the help of those juniors who assisted in the decorating. Highlight of the social calendar was the Grad Dance on June 12. The theme was Hawaiian Paradisei' and in a very picturesque and mem- orable setting seniors and many underclass- men and alumni danced to the strains of the Bud Laird Orchestra. A feeling of nostalgia hovered over the dancers as most of them at- tended their last E.O.H.S. dance. Long to be remembered was the traditional grand march in which the honored seniors participated. The conclusion of this event was the singing of the Alma Mater, with reverence and pride, to the glory of old East Orange High. QVEJBL' QW Social Commntcc 0 Seated. L. Yerg, L. Taylor, T. Woniack, L.
