Are we, the members of the Class of 1923, prepared to face Life, and yet come out of the battle with the respect and admiration of our fellow men? It would seem so, for, during that period of our lives spent within the portals of our beloved li. O. H. S., we have endeavored to mas- ter our difficulties and make the most of our opportuni- ties as each presented itself. ln the autumn of 1919, an eager, curious crowd of youngsters invaded the halls and classrooms of the High School. The upper classmen, especially the Sophs, pro- claimed us the greenest of the green, for were we not Just Freshmenn? Before the year had expired, how- ever, we proved to our worthy brethren that we were an exceptional class, and that we Haunted a banner of most daring red and truest blue instead of the verdant green one which had been allotted us. Our first noticeable deed was accomplished during our first football season. A number of our more husky members had gone out for football practice, and the rest of us craved a chance to show our spirit. An opportdnity came when a large con- crete stadium was proposed, and in the Stadium Drive DOROTHY DWYER . .. . . .Vice-President ... .Secretary which resulted, we, the pesky little freshmen, led our vain-glorious superiors in the sale of bonds! Having es- tablished ourselves, we set about finding a means of or- ganization. We elected our oficers, and felt at last that we were fully prepared to continue our good work the next fall. Our Sophomore year was even more promising than the preceding one. We discovered that we had, in our midst, numerous actors, athletes and artists, to say noth- ing of budding young authors and musicians. Our first discoveries proved that there were excellent basketball players among both girls and boys. The football season also brought forth some agreeable surprises in the mat- ter of promising material for the varsity. Our talent as actors and musicians was fgst displayed when we took active parts in the Pageant and the Operetta. The News Board already claimed several of our classmates, and further literary prowess was developed in the class- rooms. The various clubs counted many of us as mem- bers. Class spirit as well as school spirit was beginning to show itself. Having been advanced to the rank of Juniors, we pro- ceeded to make life Worth while. The clubs welcomed new members from the third-year Class. Many of us held important positions on the News Board. Our initiative was displayed by Juniors in the two debat- ing clubs. The promising athletes of the preceding year had developed rapidly, and many of them aided in win- ning fresh laurels for E. O. H. S. We prepared our- selves for our Senior year by living up to a high standard of ideals, and by contributing as much as possible to the glory of the school. When we entered again in the fall of 1922, we were full-fledged Seniors, carrying ourselves with the custo- mary dignity, but ready at any time to participate in the various social activities of the year. The Committee Dances were sources of enjoyment to all who attended, and a great deal of praise is owed to the Social Commit- tee for the fine way in which these dances were conducted. In February, the Prom took place. As usual it was a success, both socially and financially. The Senior Dra- matics wiere sufficient to provg that our ability on the stage was developed to a marked degree. Our musical talent was displayed in various ways. The Operetta was, in itself, an acknowledgment of our musical ability. At Christmas time, the combined glee clubs did much toward giving a very worth while programme. Several times during the year the school has been entertained by excel- lent musical performances, in connection with which we must mention our splendid orchestra. In March a con- cert was given by all of the musical organizations, and it delighted all who heard it. Through the faithful ef- forts of the Class Night Committee, and the co-operation of the Seniors, Class Night was the usual frolic of amuse- ment and entertainment. Our debating teams argued their way to victory again and again. Their subjects were interesting and fraught with enthusiasm. Our lit- erary superiority reached its height in this yearls produc- tion of the News, This is the history of the Class of 1923. We have en- deavored to live up to a high standard of ideals which a former Senior Class bequested to us. The path to Knowledge is not a very easy one to tread, but we have done our best to overcome our difficulties, for we realize how much a good education means to a boy or girl, when the World must be faced. The Class of '23 leaves E. O. H. S. with every feeling of loyalty and love toward the Alma Mater. We say, Good-bye, but the memory of the happy days spent under the Red and Blue will linger forever with us. LOUIE P. ABORN LKLOUI3 That Air! Noted for-Chumming with Dot. LOCKVVOOD CLASS WILL E, the members of the eminent and illustrious Class of 1923 of the East Orange High our corporeal soundness and general peace of School, having, for the most part, retained mind to the valuable extent of producing a certain pre- eminence in all matters pertaining to the brain or heart, having a determined craving to confer upon our succes- sors the knowledge, sagacity, and erudition which we have gleaned and garnered during four years of continued and persevering toil, do hereby declare unto those meritorious ones who will appreciate and maintain our ideals, this to be our Last Will and Testament. FIRST-To those Seniors who will follow in our immediate wake, we leave the sacred right to embrace our virtuous ideals and customs, our wisdom and our un- matched deportment. We leave them our sacred traditions on the condition that they be duly respected and sustained. Also unto these same we bequeath the divine sanctum comprising the suite of rooms known as 214- and 2l-1-A, with the privileges, first, of parking themselves therein before and afterschool, and, second, of indulging in serene and undisturbed slum- ber during such study periods as they may have thereat. VVe leave to you, Seniors, the inalienable right of enjoy- ing the first swim of the season in the new swimming pool. In connection with this last, we give to the mem- bers of the fourth year class the unbounded privilege, not liable to damages, of ducking any member of the other with as ye shall think fit, always living to the Iron Rule three classes in the said pool. ln order that this latter endowment may be cheerfully accepted by the entire stu- dent body, we have condescended to leave behind several of our number to aid and abet the recipients of the afore- mentioned legacy in carrying it out to the utmost. Long live the succeeding Seniors! SECOND-We present to the Juniors the unparal- leled honor of sojourning in or about the sacred recre- ation room, 221, thereby giving those residing in the very front the peculiar benefit of grimacing at all those who habitually frequent the corridors, with the special liberty of star gazing into the rooms beyond, to those nearest the windows the distinctive immunity of staring intently through same apertures with the design of attracting the attention of fellow sufferers in rooms 213 and 211, and those in the utmost rear of the room, the extraordi- nary franchises usually delegated to those fortunate ones, namely the honest right of violating all the study hall laws, and the particular one of giving the backs of all other Juniors the once-over. To the Juniors, as a whole, we leave the All-wise Ones as paragons of future Senior conduct. THIRD-The gratuity we bestow upon the coming Soph'more Class is one which customarily affords de- lightful entertainment for old and young. We leave solely in your tender keeping, Oh Sophs, the onrushing horde of uncivilized infancy, namely the Freshmen, to do of Do unto others as others have done unto youln ln accepting this legacy, remember the multitudinous times you have journeyed in quest of the fourth floor, at the bidding of a former Soph-Remember the several instan- ces when you were made the excruciating butte of a Soph'more's witticism. Remember, oh female second yearling, the time a friendly Soph directed you to the third floor via the boys' old Gym. Remember,-and be kind, courteous and generous to the novices. FOURTH-To you, Freshmen, we leave the Sophs, as your venerable protectors and guides on the thorny path to knowledge, and as your directors and teachers in all the new customs and byways of the school. Obey and respect them, love and honor them, and above all, profit by their excellent teachings, that ye may be fully prepared to sacrifice yourselves in aiding next year's Freshmen in the ways of wisdom. FIFTH-We are honestly thankful that we are able to leave our successors in the protecting influences of our enlightened and learned counselors-Mr. Ralph E. Files, and Mr. L. Jay Caldwell, whose injunctions we will sorely miss, but on whose affection and friendship we can always rely. We further extend our sincere gratitude and affection to all those instructors who have endeavored to inculcate into our minds the rudiments of that wisdom with which they, themselves, are so perfectly. endowed, and we give them the entire right to retain the Detention Room for the particular benefit of all future evil doers. SIXTH-We bequeath to the entire school our tran- scendent restaurant, which, it hath been rumored, is sec- ond only to Child's, with the unlimited right to eat, drink and be merry therein, providing that the consumers do not try to annex either the 'fsilveru or salt and pepper shakers. We leave the corridors for the benefit of every- one, that the little ones may have their accustomed play- ground, for such games as spilling each others' books and playing hide and seek behind the drinking fountains, and that the elder generations may have parking space in or- der to glimpse the latest fashions, and, incidentally, wink at the passing flappers. And, lastly, we transmit to every loyal son and daughter of East Grange High School, the sacred trust of bringing glory to the Red and Blue and of living up to an elevated criterion of principles and con- duct, and of furthering the growth of E. O. H. S. Spirit by displaying it on every possible occasion. During our Junior year We have continued our efforts Ai LCAJJA endeavored to do our best for our school and uphold it in every Way. As Freshmen We did little, in the public eye, but We slowly brought into being our Class unity, and class and school spirit. We learned, and became accustomed to the rules and regulations here, and ever since We have tried to obey them. In our second year we began to take active part in the school activities. Every football, basketball, baseball and track team had some members of our class. We joined debating clubs and all the other societies open to us. Our scholastic rating as a Whole was good. Our class was organized and our officers elected. We were the to give the school our best It was a more finished, more noticeable attempt than before. Some of our class mem- bers represented the school as debaters, some on athletic teams, and those unable to take active part encouraged those who had that ability. The social side of school life was not absent. We had, with aid from the Seniors, a very brilliant and successful Junior-Senior Prom, and we Went enthusiastically to Committee Dances. It has been a year of earnest effort, and delightful relaxation. May We enjoy our Senior year as well, and carry out even more fully our wishes, as expressed in our E. O. H. S. Creed. DOROTHY DENNY. It is the spirit of the in- stitution to be human in all of its activities, and not a soulless mechanism. The student body is composed of human beings, a human being is in each room, as teacherg in the boiler room, as fireman, in the janitor's shop, as caretaker, and in the principal's office as director. All have their in- terests, likes and dislikes, ambitions, dreams and disap- pointments. Whatever rules and regulations there are, were made for the purpose of protecting the interests and welfare of all. The rule that perhaps would best include all of them is the Golden Rule. It is assumed that every boy is manlyg every girl, Womanly. Boys and girls as a rule, are courteous, law-abiding, and willing and anxious to co-operate in the common Welfare. By so doing, they not only add to their own happiness, but they enrich the World. All the students of the East Grange High School are travelers,-companions for a few miles on the journey of life. Mary the days spent here in the effort toward scholastic attainment, be joyous onesg so that, as the rest of the journey progresses, each life shall abound with gladness, and our high school days shall ever remain a happy memory. STUDENT Bonv or THE EAST ORANGE HIGH SCHOOL. Tl-IE SOPHOMORE CLASS Nicholas Vincent .... ..... P resident Louise Elder ..... .... V ice-President Helen Berryman. . . ..... Secretary l'l'H two years to our credit, we, as Sopho- mores are justly proud of our hlstoryg and l. S even now, know that we will be remembered by our achievements in East Orange. As yearlings we took a flying start, as the largest class on record, and inaugurated the Freshman Assembly, and the Freshman Council, and even then placed ourselves to the fore in athletics and scholarship. Starting the second year, we continued with the spirit and traditions of our class, and getting in line with the school, marched on to more victories and better standards. Early in the year, when the call for football candidates came, We responded with a horde of husky men. Track, and a short season of basketball, still rings with the feats of Sophomores. Spring and baseball found us ready, and enthusiastic with players and support. Much must be attributed to work of Sophomores in the News and debating success. When we were given the school Creed, we read, and saw the whole idea and the spirit of our class embodied in it. So we have placed it as a model, and put our faith in it to advance our class and school by support and strength. ln the Booster Week and attendance campaigns, no other class surpassed ours in spirit and activity to brighten and enrich our school by our deeds. Socially, we carried our Class spirit and support to the Prom, and later in our own class social which in itself in- corporated the whole of our spirit in one grand effort to surpass any former social. Not without pride can we view our record in a scant two years, and with exaltation look ahead to the two coming years, their prospects, and our part in them. As far as number we certainly have reason for our belief. This year's freshman class is larger than any other of those preceding it. Early in the year our first auditorium program was given. Not long afterward, under the supervision of lVIiss Warner, a Freshman Council was formed and officers were elected. The officers are: Thomas Kilburn, chair- man, Grace VVilliamson, vice chairman, George Bowes, secretary, and lX'Iuriel Robinson, business manager. The membership is composed of lylahlon Smith, Thomas Kilburn, lkiary lVIason, Grace Williamson, Audrey Hohenshilt, Leonie Berthold, lffuriel Edith Robinson, Edward Hohmeyer, Eleanor James, Howard W. Drake, Jr., Edward Comings, Leonard Emed, Bernard Koether, George Bowes, Henry Swain, Phyllis T. Barrett, Howard Hunt. Committees selected from the Council have aided Miss Warner in preparing programs for some time. The members have also supervised the sale of class pins and rings in their home rooms. In Freshman Auditorium several one-act plays have been given. A Christmas play met with great success and was followed by an equally successful performance for St. Valentine's Day. A Freshman Reading Club has been formed and with the help of lWiss Peele has held enjoyable meetings in the Library. lllr. Hubbard has begun the organization of a Freshman Debating Club. We are the first Freshman Class privileged in using the new gymnasiums and other class rooms. The swim- ming pool will soon be added to the list of advantages within our reach. Ir seems but yesterday that we were initiated into the mysteries of the East Orange High School. Yet in a short time we shall be freshmen no more. lVLxRjoRxE F. LAXVSON. FRESHMAN COUNCIL THE STUDENT COUNCIL Edward Feuschel . .. ...... President Madeline Scriggins. . . .... Vice-President Reginald Vincent. . . ....... Secretary L. Jay Caldwell .... .... T Treasurer EJ' viii Student Council this year, with Eddie Feuschel as its leader, has accomplished a great deal for the High School, and it is .-fvigiipz. justly proud of its work. The Radio and Physics has been added to the clubs already listed. At the beginning of the year the Student Council found it advisable to pass an amendment concerning the holding of offices by fifth year students. No student who has been identified with the graduating Class is eligible to hold office in the General Organization during the following year. The Cheer Leaders this year did more outstanding work than ever before, and the Council thought they ought to be rewarded for their efforts. A Committee was appointed to design the emblem and the E. O. with a small C and L on each side was decided as the most appropriate design submitted. At one of the meetings, the three senior Cheer Leaders were given their awards. Attendance at meetings was carefully taken care of by the Secretary, as a person absent three times without sufficient excuse was reported to the Faculty adviser, and a new representative Was appointed. Booster Week was a prominent feature this year as well as last, and it opened the Attendance and Punctual- ity Contest, which lasted about three months. The most important and outstanding work of the Student Council was the E. O. H. S. Creed, issued as a supplement to the News. An enlarged copy was made and framed, and the Senior Class presented it to the School. With so much to its credit, the Student Council feels as though it has completed a successful year, and thanks the School for its co-operation and loyal support. MADELINE SCRIGGINS. STUDENT COUNCIL FACULTY GIRLS' DEBATING CLUB DEBATING CLUBS KEN MAIR EN .Mair is in a very flourishing condition, Q'-if, having a membership of twenty-five whose attendance has been almost one hundred per cent at each meeting. In May, 1922, a peculiar situation arose, there being but two eligible for office. At that meeting, M. Griffin was elected President, and G. Shaylor, Secretary. They held these offices throughout the year. In February, Ethel Roos was elected Vice-President. The girls have shown their interest by the skill with which the subjects for debate have been discussed, at least ten girls having this year gained the coveted Ken Mair pins. Two delightful social occasions were held during the year, one exclusively for girls, and the other which took place in the Boys' Gymnasium, included Delta Epsilon. Both were most enjoyable affairs. Three of our debaters were on the East Grange teams when they defeated Barringer and South Side High Schools in the triangular debates. Although Delta Epsilon won the lnter-club Debate on the subject of the Ship Subsidy, we feel confident that under the capable leadership of our faculty advisor, Miss Burrill, we shall corne out Winners next year. G. SHAYLOR. DELTA EPSILON meeting will now come to order, states President William Harnisch. Secretary Phillips, please read the minutes of the last KVQQQL meeting. VVill Vice-president James Hodge kindly inform the Faculty Adviser, Mr. Greenan, that the meeting has commenced. The customary business over, two teams of fellows from the club gain experience in public speaking by debating on current topics. Thus a meeting of the Boys' Debating Society, with a member- ship of 30, is conducted. On February 20, l923, the Annual Ken Mair-Delta Epsilon debate was held. The Delta Epsilon team con- sisting of Howard Gardner, Henry Falke, and William Harnisch, with Henry Davis as alternate, were the con- querors, and earned the right to place the name of Delta Epsilon on the new silver shield. The annual prize of the Home and School Association. for the best speaker in this debate, was won by Bill Har- nisch. ' After this debate the club elected officers for the second half of the year. William Harnisch was re-elected President, Durand Taylor received the office of Vice President, and Henry Falke that of Secretary. March 23 found teams, made up of members of Ken Mair and Delta Epsilon, debating Barringer and South Side in the Rutger's Inter-scholastic Debating League. Both teams brought home victories, giving East Orange the Championship of the Triangular League. This year, William Harnisch, Durand Taylor, Henry Falke, Edgar Williamson, and Henry Davis were hon- ored by being elected to Delta Epsilon, the honorary chapter. Thus Delta Epsilon passed the quarter of a century mark with victories in all its debates. WILLIAM J. HARNISCH. 'i W I BOYS' DEBATING CLUB JOSEPH M. FINIOAN. HENRY FALKE. . . .. JOHN A. BOWMAN ..... It is only natural they like to feel that the orders they place will be filled to their absolute satisfaction. Because of our ability to produce result-getting printing, we have been able to show marked growth over each preceding year. Perhaps we have been particularly successful, because we have recognized one fundamental of selling-that of putting ourselves in our customer's place. To give him the same prompt, accurate service and consideration that we ourselves would expect. Because of the additional business that we have drawn to us thru the strict adherence to this policy, we have had real cause to feel that success is magnetic.
