“
EAST NASHVILLE HIGH SCHOOL Nashville, Tennessee A school building is constructed of steel and cement, strong and permanent. Year after year, individual persons make up the building blocks of which our school is constructed. Carl Sandburg in his poem “Skyscraper’' says “It is the men and women, boys and girls so poured in and out all day that gives the building a soul of dreams and thoughts and memories.” Now we the class of 1966 show you how we “BUILD A HAPPY YEAR.” Jenny Osborne Editor Table of Contents Foreword Administration acuity lasses Organizations Activities Athletics Features 4 6 8 10 56 80 88 102 132 Our Architects Our chief architect is Mr. J. H. Windrow. He makes plans for our many activities during the year and does a very good job. He also helps the builders whenever work problems occur. He attends all our athletic programs. He is ever ready to listen to his builders'problems. They appreciate him and wish to thank him for a job well done. Our second architect is Coach Martin. He makes sure that all the builders keep at work and that none take too long for a lunch break. He does a very good job. No one could take his place. 6 Mr. Windrow’s office is always open to students who need counseling. Setting up the schedules, counseling students and handling other students problems are many of the jobs of uie Guidance Staff. They make necessary changes, advise the students about colleges, administer tests, plan career assembly programs and sponsor many homeroom guidance programs. GUIDANCE STAFF: Mrs. Betsy HendncK; Mr. Joe Sbuttoni; Mrs. Jean Hill. Guidance Staff Office Staff The Office Staff is always helpful to every student in the school as well as to visitors to our schools. They are always helping Mrs. Greer and can be seen distributing the daily bulletin around to all our teachers 7 OFFICE STAFF: SEATED: Mrs. Greer; STANDING: L. Graves; P. Mangrum; P. Lance; C. One of the most enjoyable programs of the chorus is their annual Christmas program. The chorus members enjoy their singing as well as learn much more about music. They attend several choral festivals at different colleges throughout the year. Under the di rection of Miss Frances Southerland the cho rus has done a wonderful job this year. This just shows you how much interest the band members have in their work. Beginning with a week of very hard practice at band camp they never give up their efforts to perfect their routine for each football game. Under the direction of Mr. Rufus Long the band marched at all football games, the Hillbilly Parade, the Christmas Parade, and the Marching Festival. During the annual Christmas program everyone enjoyed music by the band and especially the carol singing with the band. Color Guards: Cathy Jenkins; Kathy Collier; Sarah Hawkins: Joyce Stout. ACTIVITIES Homecoming Court: Billy Lovell; Cheryl Reid; Charlie Edens; .Diane Cutrell; Frank Hayes,; Sherrie Smith, Queen; G. C, Jenkins; Diane Jenkins; Bobby Jones: Kathy Jenkins. Homecoming 1965 The 1965 Homecoming was a very exciting affair, especially for the Homecoming Queen Miss Sherrie Smith and all her attendants. Every minute was something for each girl that she will remember for a long time. At halftime tears rolled down Sherrie’s face as she shared her joy with all those around her. Among the happy people was Janet Brown, the newly elected Band Sponsor. The only sad event of the entire evening was the final score of the game: Cumberland 6 East 0 Escort Frank Hayes walks Homecoming Queen Sherrie Smith down the field to be crowned. 82 Co-captains Clyde Sloan and Budro Harrington crown Queen Sherrie Smith. After a glorious half-time Homecoming Queen Sherrie Smith smiles as she is taken off the field by her Escort Frank Hayes. To the seniors this night meant very much, and to all the other students of East High it was also a glorious night. It was the type of occasion that adds to the building of each individual and to our school. Sportsmanship as well as congratulations filled the cement to hold these blocks together. Band President John Dickens gives the beautiful flowers to Miss Janet Brown, Band Sponsor. Following the Homecoming Activities on the field everyone enjoyed the music of the Jester's Combo at the Homecoming Dance. Seniors prepare decorations for Christmas program before a special assembly program. Everyone enjoys singing Christmas Carols led by the Chorus. Homerooms show their collections of food and clothing for needy families. A beautiful Nativity Scene made by some students added much to our Christmas Season at East. Pat Shaffer and Larry Prince tell Santa Clause how good they have been this year, so of course they will get the dolls and guns they want. This is an exciting moment at the Civitan victory over the Key Club. M. Southerland, L. Ruth, and L. Ireland practice on chorus music. Activities Around East Our dedication night was an important one for East High. Our majorettes are all smiles! These hard-working Annual Staff members gg keep busv. This year twenty-two girls competed in the talent and formal divisions for the title of Miss East High. After a very difficult decision the judges narrowed this number to five finalists. These girls then answered questions and were judged on their answers. Miss Pat Bond became Miss East High; Sharlena Phillips was the first runner-up with Betty Fulton as second runner-up. Miss East High crowned by Kathy Oliver, 1965 Miss East High. It was an exciting night for all. Preparing for the contest, the Art Department under the supervision of Mr. Donald Vaughn made a very beautiful set. The Annual Staff prepared the programs and were ushers and hostesses for the judges and the Emcee, Doc Holiday, All the girls pose as they are brought on the stage for the judges’ final look. 87 89 East High Coaches Our coaches serve East well with helpful words at the right time and Eaglecheer in all sports activities.
