n shvILlb n hvILLe high ten e sCHo SSEE OL I ENTS FOREWORD As three years’ time elapses and their memories find a permanent place in our minds and hearts, we see our every word, thought, and deed revolved around one thing, our school --EAST SENIOR HIGH. The joys, the tears, the work, and fun, the sports events lost and won, an East High image, a senior ring, the prom, and graduation--above everything. These things which help mold our character--and influence our decisions are all part of EAST HIGH’S tradition and to this tradition we, the staff of the Grey Eagle, dedicate this yearbook. Our sincere appreciation goes to those classes and leaders preceding our class of ’64 who have established the customs we shall cherish. For fulfilling-long-awaited moments with traditional splendor, we salute you and offer this dedication to you--the tradition of EAST HIGH, which awaits to be re-enacted again and again. Partially recorded and visualized are those memorable moments of 1963-64 which lie in the pages ahead. 5 ADMINISTRATION Mr. J. H. Windrow, Principal; Mr. Hilary Martin, Assistant Principal; Mrs. Jean Hill, Bookkeeper; Mr. Jimmie Bushulen, Bookstore Manager; Miss Evelyn Wright, Secretary; Mr. Kim Smith, Business Manager. As you, our class of 1964, take your place in a long and varied procession of Youth, leaving high school to prove individually and practically, in the business world or in college, the curse of ignorance or the efficacy of education, may you have learned well these basic lessons: Facts are necessary told; the ability to reason, to work, to adapt to changing situations is imperative; the only real peace exists within each individual heart; the only real security is earned security; ancient verities are unchanging and eternal; there is no truancy from life. Now comes the acid test. Practice daily and wisely these lessons; and, strong in will, go forth to strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield. Life may not be easy; but a good life, well-lived, is always rewarding. This is our sincere wish for each of you: To be honest, to be kind, to earn a little and to spend a little less, to make upon the whole a family happier for his presence, to renounce when that shall be necessary and not to be embittered, to keep a few friends, but these without capitulation; above all, on the same condition, to keep friends with himself; here is a task for all a man has of fortitude and delicacy. Acquit yourselves like men--like East High Eagles! And we will be proud of you. 6 Mr. Windrow--Mr. Martin Principal--Ass't Principal Mr. Bushulen--Bookstore Manager Mrs. Hill—Guidance Counselor MR. CLASSES Outstanding in our memories of school days gone by will be those rewarding moments spent in classes--the happy moments as well as the hectic ones. Enlightening those routine hours spent in rigorous study were the lasting traditions of friendly hellos, smiling faces, and high ideals. Towering above all other remembrances were the wonderful friendships made with new and different people--the leaders, the followers, the hard workers, and the carefree. Their names will leave us as time goes by while their faces will linger with us in our every thought and deed. Our thanks for a grand achievement goes to you, the students and the leaders, for the standards maintained and the goals that were attained. Soon in our staunch hallways will walk new Eagle supporters, as we walk into the future taking this yearbook to review in vivid array those once familiar faces. MUSIC ART DRAMA Featured traditionally as a major part of our school have been those talented groups, the backbone of EAST SENIOR, representing the fields of music, art, and drama. From the best of our Band's lively cadence to the tap of the director's concert baton, the memories of the 1964 Eagle Band will remain with us as does our school song. Day by day remembrances pass in proud display of the times of vocalizing and the times of visualizing--of the Ensemble members and the artists. Laughter and enjoyment are recalled as we, the spectators, remember the excitement of opening night or just the simple school productions. 59 BAND DIRECTOR The Grey Eagle Band under the direction of Mr. Rufus Long has been a great asset to the school this year. We, the students, greatly appreciate the hard work of the band members and the part they have played in the family of East High. MAJORETTES Majorettes: Wanda Ball, Kathy Oliver, Linda Eddings, Pat Edens, Janet Brown, Judy Twillcy. ’64 DRUM MAJORETTE The Eagle Band is proudly led down the field at each football game by Carole Brown. She steps high and adds grace to the event. Behind her march the Color Guard, bearing the flag of the United States of America and the flag of East High. Hard work and much drill on the part of these five girls make the band look and perform much better. We the students of the school do greatly appreciate the work of these people. They have been an asset to each occasion. COLOR GUARD DRUM MAJORETTE Carole Brown COLOR GUARDS: Marilyn Bruce, Carol Bumbalough, Barbara Lassiter, Barbara Burton. 61 DRAMA Shakespeare's Women The Miner's Daughter The students at East have had a successful year in present ing the productions for assembly programs and for other occasions . We are indebted to the hard work of these people. sS0P ' y • ' ENSEMBLE The East Ensemble directed by Prof. Campbell adds greatly to the activities of the school through concerts and festivals. Each year they strive to make better vocalists of the members. Hard work and constant practice constitute a fine group such as this. b 63 OFFICERS: Randy Morris--Pres.; Jackie Anderson--Vice-Pres.; Sandra Tellas--Sec.; Joan Kos—Treas. ACTIVITIES Amidst our years of school life arises a special section composed of outstanding contributions, harmonious organization, and unforgettable experience which we call extracurricular activities.” Behind each achievement can be found busy, but happy students. Those devoting their ever-limited spare time to improve themselves and their school and to serve as excellent representatives for the coming generations through activity. Our undying gratitude is extended to those individual groups for giving us students the chance for such rewarding participation. With traditional splendor may these extra functions continue along with academic functions to fulfill student life. Those wonderful moments of the past the EAST HIGH FAMILY shared working playing together can be restored to us by dreams dnd through pictures. 65 PRESIDENT’S CABINET LEFT TO RIGHT: Tellas, Goforth, Beach, Tucker, Maynor, Knight, Lee, Dahlgren--Pres., Bugg, Watts, Frensley. While other organizations are only partial in the sense that they recognize special abilities, the Honor Society regards education as a total product, measured by the four dimensions of life - -Character, Service, Leadership, and Scholarship--all requisites for members in this group, which strives to promote all things that advance the welfare of the school and the individual. No honor conferred by East excels that represented in the National Honor Society. V Miss Katherine Atkinson--Sponsor, Tucker—Pres., Shelton--Vice Pres., Hale--Sec., Conquest—Treas.
